    Hard to expect someone to sing the same way they did at 25. Smoking and drinking did take a toll on Fish's voice but what still remains is the stage presence/charisma which made pre-1988 Marillion so phenomenal. His band here is excellent...just adapting to Fish's vocals as he sings in a different key. The female backup singers take over the high notes so the vocals flow more consistently. Voices do mature in 30+ years. Fish is not the one to lip-sync. Keeps it real, genuine, crystalline.

      It is a sad fact on our world, that even in classic rock, if a vocal performance is perfect, it is likely to be the recording. Fortunately there are a few performers left who have the guts to show off their foibles.

    I grew up in the 1980s with Marillion as the soundtrack to those years. For me, the band was a revelation, a complete antidote to the chart-driven, electronic music-factory sounds which dominated at the time. Sure, Fish would probably be the first to admit he was never going to win awards for his vocals, but he remains so much more than just a singer. The power, emotion and imagery in his lyrics still send shivers down my spine 30 years on (** 'I was walking in the park/dreaming of a spark/when I heard the sprinklers whisper...' **). And he took it to another level when the band performed live: the painted face, Grendel helmet, army fatigues, Steve's soaring guitar, Fish pulling my mate Gary out of the crush at the front of the Birmingham Odeon, meeting the band after the gigs - these are the memories that will live on. Music isn't just about sounds and words, to me it's also about the feelings it evokes and the personal memories it brings back. For that, the Fish-era Marillion simply gets richer as time goes by.

      Misplaced Childhood.... one of the 10 best prog/symfo albums ever... when Marillion and Fish burst on the scene in the early eighties they were a breath of fresh air and to me they still are although the band and Fish went there separate ways... so many good memories of the concerts I saw and the people I met there

      so true, no one of these "experts" have a clue what they are talking about , yeag the voice isn't the same , who's is after ,,how many years of playing smoking bars and pubs, shit PA systems , nite after nite, living the Fish lifestyle that we all love in his songs , takes it's toll , listen to the albums then , if you want real ,,here it is

    sadly as much as I love Hogarth's words, Fish will always be Marillions voice...however Fish has never come close to finding a group of musicians capable of matching the magnificence of Marillion!

    • @Shellpink
      @Shellpink 7 років тому +8

      Sad, but true. Those two guitar players don't match Steve Rothery. I lost every interest in NMarillion after Fish's departure, but Steve Rothery created some of the most beautiful guitar solos ever and these guys practically butchered some of them!

    He's a Hero! After all those years, he still pulled it off without them!
    Marillion was never right without Fish& Mark Kelly. Script for a Jesters Tear & Misplaced Childhood are very demanding vocally... and full of evocative emotion... I've never heard anyone else cover the material like Fish, and I doubt I ever will.

    • @gavinsmith2132
      @gavinsmith2132 9 років тому +3

      Mike Randolph Mark Kelly has never left Marillion, Fish has never been the same without Marillion...artists grow and of course change, as do our musical tastes

      @mikerandolph4997 9 років тому +10

    • @gavinsmith2132
      @gavinsmith2132 9 років тому +1

      gavin smith perhaps, again our musical tastes change. Have you got Feast of consequences, if so, what do you think and have you subscribed to get a free marillion with H sampler?

    • @mikerandolph4997
      @mikerandolph4997 9 років тому +7

      I really don't like any marillion after Fish's departure. No offense, you might be really tight with them, I don't know you... But I wouldn't waste my money on any of that new shit.
      I liked script for a jesters tear, misplaced child good, Fugazi, and I'm thinking there was one more I really liked... I've heard plenty of marillion after Fish's departure... Not good like it was... Any real fan from the old days will vouch for that.

    • @Shellpink
      @Shellpink 9 років тому +9

      Mike Randolph So true. The current Marillion line-up makes good music, but it does not fulfill the expectations of someone who grew up with Marillion with Fish.

    Westy
    So Fish might not have the vocal range of many moons ago. Still not far off the money.
    I see Marillion loads of times Fish era.
    Have listened to post fish and ok ish. Band are sublime still.
    I think the Fish era generated music that will never fade and date. Will always come back to it from time to time. The lyrics have, and always will be a massive part of their attraction. Just sometimes a band and particular vocalist make music that will live long in the memory!

    I'm a huge fan of both. I believe each went in very different directions. It's not like Journey finding a sound alike and making millions singing the same hits. It's great to hear where Fish went with his music, and Mariliion went with there's. As much as I like H. The lyrics never were quite the same when he did not have help.
