    This is a fabulous idea: everybody wins. Inmates get to use their 'time in' for a really meaningful purpose. The animals benefit. And so much emotional healing can happen. Bravo.

      Cynthia Hawkins I, too, think this is a wonderful idea. This way the inmates learn how to take responsibility for other beings. This would even be a good way of treating kids with behavioural disorders.

    For all the people that made negative comments, these are not the hard ass criminals. these convicts have selected because they are the ones that have done their time clean. the caring and training of these dogs is a privilege earned through good behavior. these inmates will be teach these dogs to be service animals for people needing assistance in the outside world. With
    the mentorship of actual trainers the inmates with work with their perspective dogs in social skills, obedience and following basic commands. There's a program on the learning channel or one similar that shows inmates and these dogs working together. and at the end of each training both the dogs and the inmates have a graduation ceremony. Thus program dies work.

    Many of these prisoners were physically/sexually/verbally abused as children by either their parents or in foster homes. They were never loved. For many this is the first time they will feel unconditional love & look what it can do. Sad.

    • @imrlaps7097

      Aww, now that you said that i realize i havent seen any videos yet where they gave dogs to female inmates or had female inmates working with animals. Ive only seen males. Maybe theyre trying to prove a point, because society judges males more harshly in general. Especially where it comes to emotions, sensitivity, empathy and gentleness. Society is incredibly stupid, but that may be why theyre focusing on males being paired with animals to care for. But its dumb to not be including female inmates. I mean part of the point is to be giving the animals homes, there is a seriously high percentage of euthanizing, and this takes away alot of that, which im very glad about, and the animals get homes and companions, or they get adopted out from the prison center, and the females clearly need the opportunity for companionship just as much.
      I wonder if they allow any of them to take the animals home with them upon their release. Or if they can adopt from the centers on their facility. I hope so, for all of the inmates who are safe for animals to be around.

    • @lone6718
      @lone6718 7 років тому +9

      IMr LAPS they have this program for female inmates in some places too, but I think the one I saw was for women who had no chance at parole. You also have to think how society views women - loving, nurturing, kind, etc - most people look at a women in jail and automatically assume she has none of these "normal" feminine attributes. It's like that comparison of a women or man that kills their family members. If it's a guy, people shrug and attribute it to all sorts of typical stuff that a "violent man" experienced in life (upbringing, teasing, neighborhood, etc). But if it's a woman, "OMG she is evil, crazy, should be locked away from society," but no look into whether or not mom hugged her enough.....so, possibly they aren't putting the programs into women's prisons because of preconceived ideas of women prisoners.

    The only problem with this approach is the separation when the inmates are released, and if one of them gets to take the dog, the other one loses out. And if they keep the dog in the facility, then both inmates lose their furry friend, and the dog loses one or both of them in any case.
