The whole story about Sakurai having to drive to work at HAL Laboratory's office and even dining out for lunch during his younger years was so mysterious. Nevertheless, this was a great interview and I've learned a lot of fascinating things about the Super Smash Bros. series director in and out of the video game industry.
@@DuvJones Oh, really? I saw a documentary featuring him and he seemed good with people and socializing with his associates. At least, he was receptive to the interviewers.
Because he shares so little about himself, it makes every detail much more interesting. And because people admire him and his work, they value those details more as they grant insight into the lifestyle of one they look up to and want to strive to become.
But surprisingly he doesn't hold back answers. I think he has an aura that hold off people from getting too personnal with him. But unless he's actively avoiding people in a professionnal setting he doesn't seem that closed off , to me at least.
I have really enjoyed these talks that Harada and Sakurai have had, since it was just two bros having great conversations on camera. I am sad that it is now over, but I am happy to have seen it all.

Examining background elements during the pandemic has become popular partially thanks to people like Phil Spencer of XBOX, I think. Though for Sakurai, people probably do it anyway. As for who to interview next... the comments about the difference in living in the countryside and living in the city make me think Yasuhiro Wada would be a very interesting interview. He always seems to have a lot of interesting insight into the industry too.
I think the only reason people were examining what was in the background of Sakurai's videos was the hope that it would give them hints about who the next Smash Bros. character will be. I don't think he would be considered nearly as mysterious if he wasn't in charge of the hall of fame for all of gaming.
@@Sauraen Sakurai's mysteriousness is definitely the root of that motivation, yeah. Everyone always wants to know if their favorite series will get to be brought into the hall of fame. I was just saying that around the same time as Sakurai started doing videos from home, other industry figures had begun intentionally including hints among their own home's background during presentations. So that may have planted the idea in some people's heads to look into Sakurai's background as well.
If you really inspect his face his actual age comes out. He doesn't look 30, and I bet in bright light it's even more obvious. At the start of Brawl he did look a whole lot younger, but he actually WAS at the end of his 30s when it came out. Comparing then and now will also make it clearer!

This was a great watch. And it's hilarious to see how much respect and admiration Harada has for Sakurai, considering how the Tekken community out of all in the FGC are the most hostile towards Smash. I need an SNL Special with these two, they're like a perfect comedic duo. Edit: How TF did the replies turn to politics? Also, I've been in both communities long before Leffen played Smash, and Smash has always been the butt end of the joke.
Blame Leffen for the Tekken community being hostile towards Smash. Leffen tried Tekken, majorly sucked at it, and then called the game bad. He pretty much proved true the stereotype of Smash players not being able to handle real and traditional fighting games. Never heard any hatred towards smash from the Tekken community until dumbass Leffen did his usual thing.
Hate to spam, but adding onto this. All communities in the FGC look down on Smash. Tekken is simply the most vocal because it's the biggest. The FGC is something dedicated fans have been working hard to grow for decades. And then when competitive Smash just exploded out of nowhere with all of its... criminals.... becoming faces of the FGC, it is severely damaging to what so many have worked extremely hard to build. Smash no doubt has the largest competitive scene now, and the fact that it's also the most overrun with creeps, manchildren, and people that should genuinely be in prison is very harmful to the fighting game community overall.
@@Mashudes It does suck that the Smash community is only really popular because most of its members are either toxic brats, creeps, or just people that should not even be in these sorts of public settings. I'm not going to lie, I've played SSB for awhile, but I cannot play fighting games well. As is evidenced by how it took me over 40 tries to beat the android 21 final boss in dragon ball fighterz. I'm also not big on competitive gaming.

6:30 this part is interesting. Many people don't know this, but Harada actually studied psychology in college. In this part of the video Harada is using those skills. And honestly he nails it. Sakurai is definitely and introvert who overthink things. He seems like a nice person. Sakurai is a cool weirdo. By the way I felt a bit sorry for him Sakurai looked a bit stressed out.
I get the feeling that Sakurai is a very cold, calculated and analytical person. Someone who much rather listen to others than talk about himself, for the purpose of gaining information and knowing his "opponent" better. Also, I'm pretty sure he's been under the knife to keep his young looks, because if you look at images of him from the early 90s, he looks like a different person (looks much older).
