I was interested in hearing what your guest had to say. He seemed very knowledge and passionate about leather boots, as you are Nick. Great video
Comments like this are meaningful because this one will NOT get picked up by the algorithm :) thank you dude!
I love Ticho, Nick, and the SD podcast so this is such a great collaboration. I hope they keep this up because it’s such a treat to get a sneak peak at the next underdogs in boot making.
Thanks for saying that dude! This isn't the kind of video the algorithm will really pick up but it's important to me to balance the clicky 'best' videos with like, real researchy videos hehe
I’m late to the party in seeing this video, but I’m glad it popped up in my feed. What a great collection of Chinese boots, really fantastic boots. Incredibly interesting.
thanks man! i'm doing a proper video on iron boots tomorrow, i'm excited. got a limited edition with grey SB foot leather
He got comfortable with time. At first it started stiff. Really fun video. Man I really wish xbxs and iron boots pair in future!
I just met Ticho at the Stichdown Boot Camp event in BK. Awesome, Nice down to earth dude. He was with the iron boots booth and came over and shook my hand. Iron boots are top notch quality boots too.
Fantastic video. There's no need to defend quality, these brands have passionate and talented men behind them. Notice how sneakers places of manufacturing aren't ever discussed?
Thanks for featuring Ticho again. Dude's contributions are always worth tuning in to.
Nick have you tried doing Nordic Curls and reverse Nordic curls? You might like them!
Since I shot this I've been doing a bench/deadlift program which is chonking my hamstrings nicely!
Good to see Ticho on the screen !
Can Confirm, iron boots literally have no break in but are some of the best built ever. I have a pair of østmo x irons boot and they are so good! I have 2 more østmo x iron boots and 1 iron boot mto on pre order! Looking to get another eventually but that’s a secrets 😈
Wool is actually a fairly common filler in very high end dress shoes. It's kind of surprising, to be honest, that more of these boot nerd brands aren't using it. I predict Iron Boots being big trendsetters in this area.
It’s a pretty cheap filler and you can find realy cheap 100% wool insoles as well. The wool doesn’t have to be the highest end because you won’t directly feel it yet will still benefit from its properties. Honestly i would rather have a cork filled or just pure leather midsole and add a wool insole if i want it. You would just have to get a larger size to account for the insole.
As some one who was born in China and lived in China for half of my life and also lived in the states for half of my life, there are a few things I want to say about all the children labor and low wages things people use against made in China things.
First of all, the legal working age in China is 16 and people are only required to go through 9 years of mandatory education, which means if you got in elementary school at 7, at the time of 9th grade you can go get a job. So that’s that.
Secondly, I can have a meal for 2 US dollars in China and if I only want to survive I can live off of 3 bucks a day. Many people talk about factory workers don’t get minimum wage of 10 bucks per hour, I just want you to understand most office workers make around 5 bucks per hour in second tier cities and they still live a okay life.
With that being said, Chinese factories have issues with long shifts and bad health insurance for sure but it’s not as bad as many warehouses in the states I can tell you this much.
Btw, XBXS literally translates to Shoes God from the western side, he probably would never change that name😂
@@optimal8155 Well, Northern European countries have 4 days week and great health insurance. I don’t see anyone saying they want to buy things from Northern European countries just for that reason. Let’s just face it, it is just your PRIDE, nothing more nothing less.
@@petergreen1994 To be fair, most (Northern) European countries have a 5 workday week...
Leaving out Yearn and Acme is crazy.
Apart from the fact that Ticho says "you know" like every third word, this is a really informative video - thanks!
Although you mentioned wool filler for iron boots I don't think I've heard anyone, not on the website, here, or reddit, talk about the benefits of wool filler in boots. Does it mold to your foot like cork? Does it keep your feet warm? Maybe it prevents squeaking? Can someone enlighten me?
Good question. I can't imagine wool being any cheaper than cork, so I don't feel like it's a cost-saving measure. My best guess would be wool's natural hydrophobic quality; it will rid itself of moisture much faster than cork will, which benefits the lifespan of the insole (and boot.)
Lmao I get what they were saying on the shoecast about Ticho’s face 😂
his resting bitch face? you should have seen the jakkrabbits video ua-cam.com/video/6ZzMu0peJjA/v-deo.html
He's actually much better in this video than the previous one with the pseudo-redwings.
I really like the taller heel on the XBXS. It gives it a flare of vintage models, but is modern (modern heritage?) enough.
That Lars Kai collab is really intriguing
Will XBS boots make boots in extra wide widths?
Wow , those XBXS's are🔥
A little shout out to Quan Shoemaker as well. I just received a LTT boot from him. The fit is excellent, the last is very ergonomic and handsome, and all construction is super clean.
I would also be interested in some content covering Chinese selvedge denim and heavyweight tees. Nick is the man to try these things
Personally, I can say Bronson Mfg has really good denim products for the price.
I very had great experiences buying from Sagara in Indonesia. I already own Grant Stone and am interested in Iron Boots. I usually buy American or Japanese for my clothing. While China has sketchy practices, there is no way a child or exploited worker could churn out quality like this.
YES that's the important thing to note with products like this. Really good point
Hey Nick @stridewise you've lived in China right, what was that experience like? Were you into heritage menswear at that point and get to experience any of the Chinese brands in this area?
No I spent that whole year wearing multiple hoodies because I didn't know what a jacket was haha! The second time I went there (lived there twice) I wore suits all the time because there are cheap tailors there. I guess that was an important step to where I am now!
Iron Boot looks interesting.
I’m curious to hear more about this… where and how did the Chinese learn the trade? Is there a big internal market for heritage boots in China? How do they style them? Etc. Great video, thanks
There were many shoe factories that have been there for decades. Examples are Blazing wonder that has more than a decade of history and Acme has bespoke makers with over 30 years of experience. Where did they learn the trade? Since, the British occupation of Hong Kong. Hong Kong has many shoemakers and you will see it featured in plenty of Hong Kong films (e.g. Echoes of the Rainbow).
It's still a niche market for upper-middle class individuals. The styling is no different with most of Europe.
Plenty of time to level up your cobbler skills when you’re country’s main export is slave labor
Thanks! Definitely worth learning more about it, I’ve got to check those films!
It's very very niche here in China. None of the great boot names sell in China, even Grant Stone included. But it's a big country, in absolute terms enthusiasts are plenty.
@@cradlemonsterp9309 no. viberg and whites have distributors here. not niche at all as the japanese heritage market is very strong here
It's nice to see Nick just chilling in his boxers, talking about boots...
Not! Please put on some trousers or jeans and keep these videos suitable for everyone. Thank you!
Between Alden's Indy boots and Iron Boots, I'll choose Iron Boots when quality is the perimeter.
flamepanda is dream!
Maybe a future video idea would be “best cool, comfortable tech pants so that you don’t have to look like you’re recording a video in your boxers”. 😂
You know a lot of my videos are in shorts but they're under the desk, I wasn't prepared for this new filming setup heheh
Interesting new boot makers grabbing for a piece of the proverbial pie. I guess there’s room for more boot makers amongst the establishment 🤔
Wool - The New Jersey of materials!!
Grant Stone? I thought I was staring at Nick's stones throughout this video.
I resonate with Nick's face at 14:15. For $599 you can get whites and nicks which are legacy US makers. Not sure what XBXS are offering more at that price range especially for a made in china viberg derivative (though they seem to be working on their designs). They need to drive that price down at least $100-200 to be competitive like Ticho said otherwise I don't think they'll be around that long unfortunately
They probably were around 200$ (300$ max) before the other guy got his hands into their business.
Whites and Nicks typically have poorer quality finishing than most of the these Chinese manufacturers.
You've clearly never handled a pair of XBs. Finishing quality is better than any of the brands you mentioned, including the Vibergs they're derived from.
Plus they've got a domestic production arm that generates most of their revenue. They're sticking around.
Xbxs prices must’ve gone up in the 3 months since!! Ticho said 599 and for this exact pair now it’s 899$ crazy
Yup, looking @ 4 months and their an easy $1k, not impressed for the price, you could do any Indo MTO boot, way better and customizable
@@deaconyates2671 when we are pushing upper 700$ into the 800$-900$ and even into the low to kid 1k$’s at that point for a stitchdown boot you are basically at viberg prices which for me then I’d go why not order viberg? I was interested in Xbxs but those prices hiked to viberg prices and I just got a viberg instead for 805$ no shipping bc of Father’s Day promotion. Plus I didn’t have to wait for build times. It sucks cuz I like the look and, at the time, the price for xbxs. Plus as an Asian man I like supporting well made Asian products.
Only someone from Jersey would say that it’s the greatest place on earth…lol. Just saying
Oh boy. Your attire is going to overshadow the content in this video. Get ready for the comments. :-)
Really can use some links in the description
? there are links to every brand's instagram? some of them don't have websites but if they do they're on there
you should get plenty of material for another "mean comments" video
When was this filmed ?
@@Stridewise Yeah no worries. Chinese boot world seems to be moving pretty fast. Thanks for the video.
Are Grant Stone boots are comfortable for long hour standing work?
We are still waiting on Nick to start his boot brand. Why your guest looks so pissed all the time? 😂
It looked like Ticho set you up with the sales pitch from xsbs. They do look nice but that price point seems out of line for where the market is. They are actually priced at $700+
insane for a viberg clone made in China. Especially when you can get actual Viberg for around the same price.
I thought you were in your undies at first 🤣
This is very true. You do get what you pay for in Chinese products. There is no magic and it is physically impossible to get quality at a lowball price. China will produce that best product based on the price......period. If the business model of big corporates go shopping in China, the motto is how low can you go, The corporates most likely will pay peanuts on a dollar and you get junk. The is no way around it. Take Apple for example Iphones and Powerbooks are generally made in China, but the quality is there for you to see. However, as pricey as Apple products are, the OEM supplier's profit pales by Apple's gain on every Iphone or Powerbook they sell.
Chinese footwear maybe good quality and craftsmanship but we need to ensure the boots are not made by 8 year old kids in sweat shops without air conditioning, drinking water and breaks . Before u just promote the quality and design u need to check the workmen conditions and child labor issues there. Surprised u guys didn’t discuss this !!!
that's because it's simply impossible for sweatshop children to make something this high quality. If the boots were crummy there'd be more reason to worry
LOL you look like you're about to get it on
While I always prefer to keep my money locally and support small businesses, as well as support properly paid workers, the assembly process determines quality, not the country of origin. There are very few products as well made as the iPhone, and that would be true no matter what country made it.
Nick, I enjoy your channel immensely but, you know, I couldn't watch the entire video because, you know, I can only take so much. You know.
Do you know “Red tornado “ a Chinese brand ?…
Nick 🥰
It's not because of their quality so much as their treatment of factory laborers.
Or in general, how their communist government treats their citizens on a daily basis.
This is all way too high end for me. I consider red wings to be an expensive boot!
The ultimate humble bragger. I wonder if he’s just stoned or bored.
Yo but all joking about communism aside - great video I could only dream of affording (or even knowing what to do with) some boots as nice as these
I truly believe dude is only about how much profit he can make. I know without a doubt including labor the boot he wants $599 for has been doubled in cost just so he can make $300 per pair. Can see right through it. Dr Sole is $30, Leather about $75, labor in China maybe $50-$75 That labor is for an owner operated shop and not a sweat shop. Dude is price gouging for sure. There is a reason why you can get decent boots from China for $75 .. It doesn't cost that much to build a boot in China.
Despite being next door, Grant Stone told me they had to ship from Michigan... Might as well support Made in China. Cheers!
Did you decide to shoot in your underwear or did you decide to wear a flannel with 5in shorts. Both are poor choices lol.
That’s a lot of thigh. 😂
I get that those are great boots, but why do I want to buy any of them if they are as expensive as US made boots? Nothing against Chinese boots makers. So much less headaches by just buying US made boots.
I’m not sure about some of these brands, I don’t think wool would be superior to cork or leather, I also think SPI is a crock since adjusting your sewing machine can give you tighter stitches and then you have to think about your leather tearing at the seams if it’s too tight so I don’t see the big deal on most of these. I think Vibergs who are so big on touting their SPI are overpriced much like most of these boots and the only brand here that’s priced right is Grant Stone. I guess if it’s made in a third world country I expect third world pricing.
Welcome to the boots i saw on instagram show!
Seriously i love the channel but this guest is not doing you any favors. I’m sure he’s a nice guy but all I’m hearing is buzzwords and vague recollections of things he thought he heard about.
Also for better or worse the primary purpose of manufacturing in China is to reduce cost. When you start getting into the 600$ plus price range you might as well manufacture in the U.S. and charge what it costs. You’re no longer dealing with casual purchasers and the value isn’t worth the association with ‘made in china’ moniker. I’m not saying China can’t make a quality product, I’m saying that is what people perceive.
If you like the Chinese boot better then go for it. If the Chinese boots are what you can afford then go for it. Everyone should do what is best for them. But if I’m going to spend money on higher end boots then I’d rather buy from somewhere else.
Again, love the channel. You do a good job. I just don’t agree on this one.
I don't think people are worried about Chinese quality anymore. The concern now is that of supporting the economy that is actively planning to turn democratic, independent Taiwan into the next Ukraine.
People are worried about Stidewise Nick not wearing trousers on his videos anymore
I do my best to keep the money in America.
I know some good quality Chinese textile brands that make really nice pants- like real high quality selvedge jeans from Japanese denim. Just saying.
Can you name it, please? I’m looking for new jeans not garbage as fast-fashion brands
@@elerg2932 ok. Currently I'm waiting for black selvedge chinos from redtornado. Also, i heard only good things about soucezhan. Both have stores on ali and specialize in vintage style textile production. Also, you'll be able to find some other brands with similar style clothes browsing the recommendations section in the app.
Nick showing off the gams
lol when it's hot my Australianness kicks in and I strip right down regardless of fashion norms
Why does this guy have the worst silhouette in every brand 😅 and I LOVE all of these brands. All the boots have like a sleek euro toe, instead of a bulbous toe box.
So bootguy is buying these boots for 200 bucks & selling them in the US for 599 - good luck. I feel a rant brewing, so I'll end it here.
Before willfully buying anything that was made in China, there are six Uigher Concentragion Camps you should know about.
before buying anything american you should know that US has bombed numerous countries and also they have single handedly destroyed a country named IRAQ...and america is involved in numerous coups all around the world
Not really something that would influence my decision to purchase some of these boots
That's why I buy made in the US products exclusively. Because America has never committed any atrocities ever.
It was crazy! I found this guy in guangzhou named HUNTER BIDEN that ran a remarkably high quality boot company! All purchases included 10% gratuity for the big guy up top. He said he would send me some new specs when he gets his laptop back.
No way would I pay $599 for a Chinese boot. Sorry.. $300 is pushing it.
The boots might be nice, but do they come in size 14? Grant Stone does not.
Your guest’s energy is off. Dunno what it is but I don’t like him lol
He’s fine haha he’s mostly used to podcasting and he has said that he just doesn’t know how look on camera.
I don't trust someone who refers to the person they are sitting next to as "man". What's wrong with using someone's name? Perhaps it's an American thing that I don't understand.
people like"made in America"
That's right. CCP is our declared enemy, so stop buying Chinese goods when possible.
This guy looks like he just found out his mom died before this interview. Who hurt my mans? 😢
He doesn't have a UA-cam account to reply to comments but I'm sending him all these comments
Those XBXS are almost an exact copy of Viberg service boots. Cannot support that shit
Did Viberg design the service boot? Or did it come from a previous design? Are all current boot designs proprietary to the brands that make them in first instance? Or to the ones that make them better than others?
I'd rather stimulate my countries goddam economy first and not support a commy country, I'll pick ANYWHERE ELSE in asia before china
@@amBullseye anyone can make a variation of a service boot. Viberg was one of the first in history but that’s not what the problem is here. The point is that they are a family owned company operating at a high level to this day. And this Chinese guy is making an exact replica of their design
@@amBullseye Problem with xbxs in particular, is how lazy they're.
Many makers have a service boot model, and each of them puts their own unique spin on it.
xbxs literally steals popular designs from reputable makers - viberg, whites and clinch. just to name a few.
Are there interesting and good chinese boot makers? Absolutely. Just look at flame panda and iron boots. They don't steal other people's popular boot models.
I agree, eland particularly for the price. I’d rather pay a couple of hundreds extra to get Viberg, not a copy
His excuse for “proving” Grant Stone is not made in a sweatshop is BS. Apple products are very well made but there is plenty of evidence that Foxconn operates sweatshops.
No
Hard pass
Personally, if I have an option not to buy something from China, I won’t . There are exceptions to everything, of course. I’m typing this comment on my made-in-China Apple iPhone 13 Pro because there aren’t any accessible alternatives at this time. But if I have a choice between a Chinese motorcycle or my Italian machines, well “lunga vita alla Ducati”! And these are personal choices based on my personal biases which everyone has a right to have. I can’t dictate how one spends their hard-earned money, I can only control where I choose to send mine. I will continue to support manufacturers from smaller countries who employ ethical standards in manufacturing and labor, and who offer an inarguable value proposition. My personal preference when it comes to clothing items will always remain with American and Japanese offerings. But again, to each their own. Hard pass on Chinese boots.
Note to self: Next time there is a guest, have a script. The dude rambles in a very annoying way.
it's just that he's a podcaster so he's used to talking a lot instead of a little. just filmed some new videos with him maybe you'll like those!

On the grant stone products, you say that a lot of stuff is from the United States. My question is how is that cost-effective to pay for shipping for the products to go to China be made then ship them back here to the United States? Because I know shipping just from within the United States from something I’ll order online is ridiculous prices for shipping and that’s just within the 50 states and you’re talking about companies like that are in Milwaukee and that are in other cities within the United States ship their products to China then ship them back. I don’t see how that works pricewise.
