Likely because Laura Branigan recorded and released a cover of it. He might have had to forfeit any American release of it in the process. There would have been no sense of Branigan recording and releasing a cover of it if his record of it was available at the same time in America to buy as a single.

This version (the original) has such a different tone than the laura version. It's amazing how artist can use the same material and create a compleately different mood. They are both good and bad in their own ways.
The same can be said of Dolly's "I Will Always Love You" vs. Whitney's version (I like both). Same thing can be said for Nine Inch Nails' "Hurt" vs. Johnny Cash's version (Cash's version is superior IMO).

But you know, slightly misheard lyrics definitely help create later versions of many songs. This is how art and language progress, and endure, through the ages.
I came across this randomly on Spotify a couple of weeks ago and had absolutely no idea it was an old song until I heard the other version played on the radio today, assumed this one was a modern cover of it and looked it up. I'd never heard any version of the song before a couple of weeks ago, it's so weird I've found two since then and this version is incredible. The production has held up so well! Great song.

I heard that song pretty much every day during our 3 week summer vacation in Italy. It played in every store, on the boom boxes at the beach. And only later did I hear Laura Brennigan's version.

I'm looking for the version featured in the Knight Rider episode 'Halloween Knight', neither Raf or Laura Branigan (instrumentals sound closer to the latter). So frustrating!
I was working in a disco when this thing appeared. The music of the 80s remains an unsurpassed beauty of the past. To this day, I listen to those songs and sift through the events and characters that followed them. Ehhh never again that beauty.
Laura version was authorized, licensed to her, she knew both the composer and RAF and many other italian artists and she did a very nice work. Laura version is more popular and known cause the song was an hit in the USA and rest of the world, Laura version is in GTA Vice City soundtrack, not a case. 80's at their essence.
THIS IS THE ORIGINAL SONG of SELF CONTROL interpreted by Raf in 1984. But for the american market the songwriters had to find a singer because they had no contract with an american label. This is why everyone knows Laura Branigan.
I am 38, I've known this song since I can remember, but I only just found out that I knew a cover version...maybe everybody else knew, maybe I am the only one, in that case, it's my "fault". But if that's not the case, if people don't know, I think it's criminal. Laura Branigan was a great singer, her version is fantastic, but so is the original + it is the original! These versions are almost 100% identical, I just hope Raf and the other songwriters got their proper share, otherwise it would be even more painful, since the cover was released the same year, as this original. It's much easier to just improve a finished product, that's already great, than trying to come up with a great product yourself. I wish cover versions of songs had words "cover version" (+ name of person who wrote/made the original) written in the brackets next to the title, so that the actual creators get the credit they deserve.
pietro5000pp I cared. :/ I like to go back to original versions of songs to see how they began before the later versions that sometimes become more famous.
+pietro5000pp I'm sure people are here yelling and saying that Raf stole the song.. which is wrong. The Original comment is a nice heads up :) I greatly prefer Laura's version to any other one (not that this one is bad) but, that is often the case when the version I hear first is my favorite.

This really is close to being the perfect 80s pop song. It's fantastic.

Why have I never heard of this guy? I grew up during this time. Listened to radio all the time. I love this! He needs to get royalties for this song.
He made other good songs, one in particular i remember lovin is Ti Pretendo. I was little but I loved that song
He did get royalties for the song
becouse he didnt do too many song in this style.. he himself didnt want to do this song in firstplace. He did for the money and ended up with a masterpeace by accident
Likely because Laura Branigan recorded and released a cover of it. He might have had to forfeit any American release of it in the process. There would have been no sense of Branigan recording and releasing a cover of it if his record of it was available at the same time in America to buy as a single.
because he was not an anglofone singer
Love the synth and the eurodisco sound of Raf's "Self Control."
In Mexico, the song came with Laura, and I liked it. I was 11 years old, it was not known that it was a cover, it took several years until one day the original version arrived and I stayed with it forever ... ☺️

The different mood comes from the record’s producer and the sound they bring to the table.
Bad?? You are crazy.

Great song.

THIS IS THE ORIGINAL. Laura coverd this song
