    Ordering an 8500hs. These reels definitly have a market. Ill be using it for tuna popping and jigging in the canyons. These shud have no problem holding up to our fishery...and when compared to our other options ($1k++ shimano and daiwas) the price is very affordable.

    I hope you are having good fishing success down there. Fishing up here in Maryland is really slowing down here. Not to mention health is not so good. I did catch a few nice togs on that beautiful fierce. Hope you great fishing. Thanks chris.

    Love the video. I understand it also has a bearing on the pinion to stabilize that area as opposed to the Slammer. Also, it looks the Authority now has external seals on the line roller and the slammer does not correct?

    excellent detailed review, and balanced assessment, thanks!
    here's a question (bit long, sorry):
    context : I have a Slammer III 8500HS and use it to fish the big bluefin tunas we have in Brittany (France). They typically are in the 200-300lb range, but there get bigger sometimes. reels are suject to extreme pressure. my Slammer did not take well the long rushes under 25-30 lb of actual measured drag. first heavyweight fight took out the smooth delivery of line under load, and now it tends to stutter on a fast rush. and there's some gritting feeling when reeling. my friends' Stellas 18 or 20k do not do this. but they cost a fortune. the Authority may be a nice compromise.
    question: do you think the Authority will stand this kind of abuse?

    • @CastFromTheHip
      @CastFromTheHip  Рік тому +2

      Thanks for stopping by! That sounds like some amazing fishing. So the slammers and the authorities use the same drag material. I’d check the condition of your Slammer 3’s drag washers. If they are in bad condition, Penn’s Dura Drag may not be up to the task. If the drag washers are fine, the Penn Authority may be worth the shot. The gears, rotor and pinion pack design is a significant upgrade over the old slammer 3s. The stainless steel gears should do much better than the brass gears in the basic slammers. Now the Slammer 4 DX has stainless steel gears and a improved rotor. However, the authority appears to be a significantly better design. That Shimano Stella looks beautiful! But pricey….take care and good luck!

      @@CastFromTheHip I'm wondering if the drag cap mushroomed on his slammer. It seems the drag cap on the penn is some type of metal from your video which would help prevent this from happening. The Saragosa's has an issue with the past and they changed the underside of the knob to aluminum.

    • @johntuttle9544
      @johntuttle9544 Рік тому +2

      If your drag stutters its usually from water intrusion leading to swelling on one part of the washer creating an uneven surface. Take it apart, clean and regrease the washers. Any roughness in the gear train would be from cranking against too much pressure and even Stellas will get rough. The SS gear of the Authority will be tougher, but every spinning reel is subject to flexing if you try to force it against too much pressure. Its part of fishing for BIG fish with spinning gear. Better technique helps.

    • @eves08109
      @eves08109 Рік тому +2

      The Dura drag is a good system but it has it's limitations just like anything else. The 8500 has a max of 50lbs of drag but catching Bluefin over 200 lbs could be overkill for that size reel especially since you're really working that reel at that drag pressure. The Saltiga, Stella and Makaira is more designed for the kind of fishing your doing.

    good video man, if u started ur channel 10 years ago you would have a ton of subscribers, but right now everyone is struggling to grow. I have never touched Penn but from your videos I am familiar with Penn designs inside, and the other day I found I chinese reel where the chinese actually stole the design from Penn, not from Daiwa or Shimano. It was kind of refreshing to see the Chinese steal from someone else.

      Thanks boss, appreciate you leaving a comment. Timing is everything, but Im having a blast and humbled anyone actually watches my vids. Haha I’d love to visit china and see how many pirated designs are running around. You could probably get knock-off Stellas and Slammers for $100. Shimano products are amazing, I’m going to throw a few Shimano’s in the mix. I’ve never touched Daiwa, but they look great. Honestly…there are just too many options. Good problem to have.

    Being how it’s fully sealed it has ipx8 rating and it’s made in china, as well costs $500-$600. Is it worth getting it versus the The other Japanese equivalent reels (twin power, certate)?

    • @CastFromTheHip
      @CastFromTheHip  Рік тому

      Don’t think you can go wrong with Shimano or Daiwa. The penn authority definitely competes with specs and they use a lot of metal making them heavier. They’re tanks and should go the distance. The Japanese offerings should be lighter and the tech seems more sophisticated. I’m definitely biased towards penn because I grew up with them so take this all with a grain of salt.

    • @raynman6466
      @raynman6466 Рік тому +1

      Different reels for different purposes really. More and better sealing on the penn. I'd you're not getting you're not getting salt water or sand on your reel and you're throwing a lot of lures then a lighter less sealed reel would be a better choice.

    • @eves08109
      @eves08109 Рік тому +1

      There is no comparison. The Stella fk 5000 is $829 and used for a different kind of fishing and the Authority 8500 is $500 and is more designed for bigger game fish.

    After watching quite a few videos it really doesn't seem all that much better over the new slammer. I don't like the way they removed the 'S block' guide/support either and the price exacerbates that. I wouldn't buy it even If I had the money.

      A brass gear is a great one but it's not just what it's made of but how it's made that counts. Daiwa makes zinc gears on their BG reels but they made large which gives it that durability. I know about it because because most of my reels are Daiwa and Penn.

      Yes I agree! The Saltist is just a better sealed BG but it's the same reel. You can't go wrong with Shimano either, they make good reels. It really boils down to personal preference when it comes to reels.
