My Honest Thoughts On Season 2's Visuals | Jujutsu Kaisen Animation and Art Style Discussion

- Опубліковано 6 чер 2024
- With Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 nearly a month away, I wanted to discuss the very clear visual change from Season 1 and Season 2's new trailer! I am NOT AN ANIMATOR, so it should be disclosed that my thoughts and discussion aren't to be taken seriously.
As many of you know, Sunghoo Park (previous director who did season 1) will NOT BE directing season 2. That role belongs to Shota Goshozono! He will be debuting as a series director with Jujutsu Kaisen. He's a very talented animator and known for his unique approach towards scenes. From what we saw in the trailer, I'm very excited and still have high hopes for season 2!

Cool video! With Arifumi Imai pretty much confirmed to participate, Vercreek calling dibs to animate a fight in Shibuya arc, and Gosso's direction and connections, it's safe to say that the peaks of this season will be legendary masterpieces.
Complex designs make it so that in pursuit of a well polished product, the staff is simply unable to be too ambitious, as visible with JJK 0, which was pretty average as far as an animated action movie goes especially considering the staff list. The simpler art just gives so much more creative freedom to the animators, plus depending on the animation directors like Hironori Tanaka or Takuya Niinuma, the art can be super detailed for their episodes or scenes.
What most of us are worried about is consistency, since I've heard that there's a lot of action in the second arc. Hell there was at least one action scene in almost every episode of season 1 as well, and looking back there were only a few obvious sacrifices like episode 10.
the legend is here
JJK 0 animation was average?! All I hear is praises about his great and well done it was. Exactly what was “average” about it?
Wait vercreek is gonna be working on s2?
@@pardue23 he's not saying the animation was average. He's saying that given all the skilled people working on the film, it should have been a lot more immersive and groundbreaking.
@@omegaminoseer4539 Huh? Gojo vs. Miguel and Yuta vs. Geto are some of the greatest things ever animated. JJK 0 was a tremendous-looking film, that tried to honour the style they'd established in the series to that point.
The only thing i miss from Season1 are Gojo's mesmerizing 6 eyes...😭

The only, and I mean ONLY thing I'm going to miss about the old art style is how intricate and beautiful Gojo's eyes looked. They definitely don't look quite as good in the new art style. Otherwise, I much prefer the simpler designs. It brings back vibes of older shows like Naruto or Cowboy Bebop which still have better animated action than 90% of anything else out there. Especially when it comes to actual fight choreography.
At that time gojo hadn't unlocked that level of six eyes usage i think
thats cause now his eyes are much more visible and hes not always wearing a blindfold. But when he unlocks his full potential he will for sure get it back in a lot of scenes

But they literally cleared the details of some scenes...nd it looks like fan animation sometimes😭(compared to s1...nd I'm talkin abt the whole trailer)...nd for me the s1 animation is still better cz its fits the genre of jjk (dark fantasy) perfectly...😢
@@toxic.fx18 i agree am not feeling this new animation
@@toxic.fx18 there is still dark fantasy but it will be during the second core, during the first core the colors are more bright to make a contrast
@@toxic.fx18Animation style varies from one animator to the next. Its not an art style thing. Different animators will animate in thier preferred style. Thats why some scenes in the same show can look so drastically different from one another.
@@dia7282 that's the point..why tf they changed the director..i mean the s1 was good wasn't it..and its very odd totally change the art style for the entire show..nd i don't think this type of animation will look good in shibuya arc..(its only my prediction tho)
what i noticed most is that the cinematography of this season looks very much like a movie in a sense, whereas season 1 had more basic cinematography, this season it looks much more unique
But they sacrificed so much for it. It looks terrible flat. Line work is lazy! Anatomy is lazy! Fight scenes suck!

with the new episode out im so glad they went with simpler designs. makes the animation more expressive putting the focus on the movement
I like s2 more as I like how everyone moves as well and it looks pretty good
Honestly I don't care about the movement, I prefer a more detailed visual on the characters, like in Season 1.
But it seems more and more animes go this direction of sacrificing good looking detailed designs for a seemingly better movement animation through more simple and cartoonish, weird looking design
With the new art style and improved animation, I’m excited to see how sukuna vs jogo will be animated, same with sukuna vs mahoraga. I think we all can’t wait for gojo’s 0.2 second domain expansion to be animated

Hidden Inventory and Mechamaru’s Double Cross are very short arcs in reality, and as people have said already - Shibuya is very action heavy and will be faster paced. i fell in love with the season 1 art style, new season animation looks very flat and hard to follow
exactly and the cutscene in fights are insane, considering how when gojo was killing the curses after using his 0.2 domain all we could see was him running and curses heads flying, its so annoying to watch bro. don't even get me started on the yuji fight vs grasshopper, it couldn't get worse from there. even in episode 9 when ino was fighting the curse medium dude, it was so choppy i could barely see shit, season 2 is downright disgusting to the bone and i'm disappointed they aren''t even going to fix it, we are done bro and the worst part is sukuna vs jogo is going to be exactly how it was portrayed in the trailer
I LOVE this new art style. There is less info/clutter for the eye to look at but allows you to see more because it's simpler.
Gege is THE best mangaka at choreographing and blocking fluid damn near "the raid" level cinematic fights. Season 2 animation may seem simple in a still frame but its purpose is to allow fluidity and dynamic kenetic energy to the plethora of fights wee will end up seeing throughout shibuya.
You might wanna say currently on shonen jump
But I still think Yuto Suzuki takes the edge. Sakamoto Days is literally made to be sakuga in the anime
@Márcio Amaral thank you so much for the rec I've been looking for more great choreography in manga if you have any more I'd love to hear em! 😊
As a JJK stan myself, I'd say Sakamoto Days has better fights in manga

Just look how Dagon is in s2 he looks goofy…The special grade curse in s1 the trio met was more menacing with that animation…
because the power gap was far huger, finger bearer was a bigger threat to megumi and yuji than dagon was
@@user-fl1st2ot2p im talking about the animation not the power ,you stupid?
So you telling me that special grade with one finger who can’t use Domain is a bigger threat than dagon?daammnn you dumb af XD
Simpler design = more dynamic fights
And
If they animate also shibuya arc (probably yes), simpler design is a must
Still s1 did had dynamic moments already, the fights WERE beautiful.
simpler style just gives more time to make more frames to make it more smoother and yes s2 does look smoother but tbh it looked really great in s1 either way srsly who cares they could have made simpler shit in fights to make themselves comfortable but it just looks like csm, reminds me of csm not Gege's amazing manga work which only s1 and movie did.
That's what it's missing the unique style it had was being similar to gege's work aka jjk manga style.
And in animation making more frames (means making it smoother) doesn't always make it better than the choppy animated version for example in spiderverse itself has the choppy animated style and it feels more better than the smooth animation everyone is doing today.
It just separates it from others.
I have experience with animation and can tell smoothness doesn't always make it better. Not saying jjk s2 looks bad but whenever I look at it, it just seems to have smth missing
@@stepasidebiaach so you have experience in animation (that is really cool 🤩) ? Can i ask you how this season of jjk should be properly animated? I mean, how the fights (there will be a lot of them) should be worked?

@TheFakeWeeb I don't understand why they can't do both art styles? Detailed and hard lines with shadows until a fight scene and then smooth it out. I hope the six eyes are still detailed
This was honestly an eye opening video. You just managed to change my mind for the better about JJK S2 art style. I always love your chapter reviews and plot theories but this is another field of knowledge i didn't expect you to give a such a sound opinion on. Wonderful video👍👍.
However, going forward i will miss S1 darker and more detailed art. I hope they bring it for Shibuya Arc 🙏🏿. In MAPPA we trust.
Lol people making up every reason to say that S2 (so far) looks better and it just doesn’t 😭😭.
trying to defend so bad it aint even working😂
Fr I really don't like S2's animation. Like they talking about the 'fluid motions' which Season 2 should have a lot more but to be honest unless you pay attention and nitpick very closely the motions of the characters are just perfect. So since motions don't really matter as much, we got a very cartoonish JJK (Sukuna vs Mahoraga was the biggest disappointment) for no reason. 😭😭
S1 has better quality action with no doubt
Yes, it's because sunghoo park direction in s1
bro was wrong
I think when taking aesthetics into account one cannot leave out rhetoric and without spoiling lets just say this artstyle fits this arc perfectly
The animation of this season is probably gonna be on another level compared to the first season, which is crazy considering godly animation already had. I will miss the more highly detailed visuals in s1 tho
Idk
@@REXae86great input
@@fembirdyI completely agree I’m pretty sad at the change personally bc it also feels like this change is just completely unfaithful to Gege’s style by just making all the line work so simple with much less detail
I actually loved the more muted warm filters and color palette on season 1, it was so different from anything else. The Hanami fight was SO GOOD!
So far season 1 graphics are better than season 2
by far too
Yeah, I agree with you that the less details, the more fluid/smoother the animations would be. It's the same thing for ranking of kings since they use a similar approach.
Also mob physco anime is also really good example for anmamazing animation thanks to simple design
I may be speaking from ignorance, but I think it wouldve been cool keeping the character designs detailed during non-battle story moments and then simplfying it for scenes with more dynamic motions. Similar to FMAB.
That would be cool but I assume it would take longer for season 2 to release
as the previous comment has stated, it would likely take more time. They are going to be capturing the ENTIRE Shibuya arc as well as star plasma vessel arc. That is an extraordinary amount of fight scenes

I guess gojo’s 6 eyes got a downgrade because he was younger, but maybe in the 3rd season they will add back the shiny cloudy sky looking eyes
Why 3rd season? It's 2nd season
As an animator, I would be mad if I was forced to make a smooth animation with a high quality details.
Thank you for defending this new JJK artstyle 🙏
No problem! Glad to hear an animators perspective on it 🙌🏼
Thanks for making this video. Many people wew criticizing the new designs without thinking how it would the whole animation in general.
i love the art style and animation style change. The little motion blur they do on the characters look seriously good
I think i love the brighter look
I'm so jazzed about season 2 it's insane 😩👌🏻
Very well said and Ranking of Kings is another of my favorite shows.
Thanks for the perspective
The anime now is flat, has less contrast, less flare, boring angles, and no priority on any elements, every aspect of season 2 is just fine, nothing exceeds in any area being visual or soundtrack, still drawing or in-between drawing.
No I'm not a hater, I loved the manga and the latest chapter is looking like someone getting clapped in half maybe isn't the end of the world, but season 1 really had a uniquess even more compared to the manga, however while season 2 has "fixed" compositing issues it hasn't enhanced the show overall, at least personally for me it hasn't. Season 2 adapts the manga well enough but doesn't add a lot more, it simply is ok for JJK.
And for me, personally, JJK is not ok, it's amazing!
Jujutsu Kaisens 1st season is a lot better than the manga.
Jujutu Kaisens 2nd season is a little better than the manga.
NOTE: THIS IS MY OPINION, I'M OPEN FOR A BRAWL.
As an animator, season 2’s animation looks absolutely insane. It’s gonna be an amazing season 🔥
Just watched the new episode and the art/theme does really feel more simpler but clearer and more fluid which is amazing! I think if they balance between slow detailed shots and clear fluid fights it would be perfect! I really do believe a lot of fighting back scenes from S1 where really busy
Can't wait to see this style in motion.
talking about simpler style I think an anime that absolutely nailed it is devilman, they were able to deform the faces and bodies based on movement and I really like this style, it's not gonna be everyone's cup of tea especially when it's extreme like in devilman but I'm personally a big fan of simpler, but more fluid animation even to the point the smears look blobby
The new animation is absolutely GORGEOUS. The S1 anime is obviously great as well but S2 is just so much smoother and in my opinion looks much better.
Hell not!
@@mdisiz6234 it would be ‘no’ not ‘not’
I was a little bit worried, but now that i am watching the 2nd season, i'm loving the new artstyle, and it really does make it possible for the action scenes to be even better than S1, just like you said!
Great video, thanks!
Absolutely can't wait for Toji vs Gojo this season will be🔥 Goated review fakeweeb
Now that the first episode is actually out, i can safely say that I do in fact love season 2's animation style more
“minimal/simpler art direction” and “time constraints” are contradictory? MAPPA needs to stop having so many projects going at once or quality goes down, that’s their issue.
Personally I don’t like the Hanami vine’s scene. If giving an inch is “simplifying the art for more dynamic movement” then they end up taking a mile by adding excessive dynamic movement, which makes it all a blur anyways.
Man this video really shed a new light on the good and the bad of season 1's art style and made me more aware. You did a great job :D!! Can't wait for season 2 !
New style is peak
I love The New season, pretty much hyped for it. Shōta Goshozono Never fails to impress me when he directs an episode like In JJK Episodes 8 and 17. The camera work, compositing, That fluid animation, you just can't help but get excited man👽
I'm just ready to see Toji animated. Episode 5 or 6 is going to be crazy y'all.

As an animator, I'm really glad you made this video. Many don't seem to understand why art becomes simpler in well-animated sakuga scenes. Every second of animation seen is about 24-30 drawings. It makes more sense to sacrifice immense detail in every drawing in order to get a more fluid product.
I mean if you can have both, but it takes an immense amount of effort. More than what's usually done.
Nice analysis
I say that because of this new art style, Shibuya arc will look better than i thought it could after reading the manga.
The shadows on the clothes def would get hard to draw for so long. I like the more washed look for S2. And the compositing will def look better next this time around. I am super excited for Season 2. I do wish they kept the angular faces/jawlines and Gojos eyes though. I loved that look!
Hi man I love your videos!
Appreciate you bro!
also in the first episode i can seen utahime reflection in the mirror which is pretty cool it was in the corner or something that detail wasn’t needed but it’s fire to see them doin small stuff like that
I know the animation is going to be great regardless, and the art style just depends on your preference, I like the simple design of season 2 more, but what I most hope for is that the fight choreography to be on parr with season 1, that's the main thing I liked about it.
Even if s2 choreography isn't on the same level its still gonna be much better visually (compositing, softer designs etc) it's gonna make even average animation look good
i think the more simple style might just be for gojo's backstory arc.
so hyped
It looks to me like a lot got borrowed from Studio Binds work on Mushoku Tensei last season. The art style captured a beautiful but simple balance, allowing it to be so smooth during action sequences. I think this follows that same path and I'm so excited for it
This new artstyle fits the time period for sure but I hope they return to the old one in the main timeline
They aren’t and they destroyed megumis design. It’s shit
One month to go. It's going to be the best birthday present I could have wished for.
Also, I hope that the second part of the season, that is Shibuya, isn't going to be neglected, because they might just go apeshit for the first part, and then run out of steam for the second. (Shibuya is the goat here)
Season 1's animation style was amazing, i cant explain why but the animation style in season 2 just seems more aesthetically pleasing to the eye
first episode of season 2 was already a banger they upped their animation game by a dozen. sure they switched styles but damn does it fit the flash back
This aged like shit ngl
REALLLLLL🤣🤣🤣🤣
How?
I've seen a lot animators say that the new animation shows improvements in compositing, fluidity and color grading. And the other part is a slight style change due to different animators. The linework is thinner and the models less detailed which makes motion more fluid- imagine animating an intense fight with a model that has too many wrinkles in their clothes and complicated shading or textures. It would take too much time. The camera angles also looked more dynamic and the backgrounds were less busy which distracts from the action. In short words, it looks promising. It's different from the aesthetic of season 1 but being honest here... I like it way better.
Cant wait for season 2
Animation in season 1 is better
The visuals from Shibuya arc went from mid to absolute beast after the latest ep yesterday, the mix of 3d and 2d in s2 really feels refreshing.

I am definitely gonna miss the old style but you're right about Megumi's fight scene from season 1 it could be better. I like the new one too but it still feels like something missing.
Season 1 visuals just look so good
i believe the "new visiuals" is only for the hidden inventory arc. and we will go back to the standard in shibuya
I HIGHLY doubt it, 2 reasons:
1. We already got the Shibuya Key Visual AND Shibuya Character Designs (Yuji, Megumi, Nobara, Maki, Gojo and Nanami) Both are shown to be in the simple style.
2. I don’t think them changing art styles was a choice, rather it’s more convenient with the production constraints. Considering the release of the JJK 0 movie and chainsaw man S1, it would’ve taken too long for S2 to be well animated with S1’s heavy art style.
it won’t the character designs for Yuji, Megumi, Gojo, and crew was shown and they have same simpler design and less line work as the trailer
Lol no
Pls no
I believe your dream will come true 😢
I I prefer the exact line like in the first season, but I'm curious how the second season will turn out. If only they didn't spoil Gojo's eyes because that's what always made him stand out and in the trailer his eyes are... normal😢

In those fast moving scenes, you can tell by the background being put into simple blocks

Meanwhile, mha fans: 😭😭😭
Season one was better because it was distinct. You could easily see any scene from season one and know it was JJK. However, the new one looks like it could be any modern anime. I understand it costs less and it easier to animate, but I just felt like it’s lost it’s individuality and soul.

they already confirmed multiple times that s2 will have shibuya. idk how much they'll adapt though, we'll have to see :/
Yes they’ve confirmed Shibuya and most likely will animate till the end (chapter 137 cliffhanger)
@@ugh5281 They have to adapt the full thing. Idk how else it would work. There is no stoping point after Gojo gets sealed which we know that's not where they will stop since it's a 2 cour season.
