Give these two a break, they're used to interviewing TV chefs and pop stars. Likewise, Josh is more used to late night TV where you get twenty minutes to have a conversation, not four.
Re: make every mediocre thing he does seem like a work of art? That's what happens when anything gets popular/trendy (cf. Gaga for an extreme example). Obsession can be good for art, depending on which end of the telescope you're looking through.
Wasn't he the drummer for the Fleet Foxes? I recognize his comedy from a show at the Santa Barbara Bowl about 4 years ago (or so).. He definitely had the crowd laughing a few times -- probably the most vocal member of the group at the time.
People in the comment section are so think skinned. He's answering their questions with his humor. He didn't even come off as an asshole, you'd think the English would appreciate his dead pan humor.
I feel as though FJM is committed to the punk tradition of irony in musicians' TV appearances (Nirvana on TOTP, for example), but the context isn't quite oppressive enough for it to be genuinely subversive and Josh is actually a really nice guy, so it comes off a little awkward. The three of them are just too likeable haha.
The interviewers dont really engage in any of his answers here, they just seem to gloss over everything and ask the next question on their list. i mean, hes not the esiest person to talk to obviously, but they could at least try.
The awkward began already when he had nearly matching shirts with the female interviewer. The kind of guy who says weird stuff the subtle way so it takes a second to process and be like "wait what?". In his own way almost as epic as Tim Minchin.
Josh cracks me up, I think the hosts did a much better job than what say, "Good Morning America" might have done. They actually made him laugh a few times by playing along. As an American, I can say that most Americans are literalists and won't really get sarcasm this straight faced, they kind of need to be hit over the head with irony and sarcasm to catch on, but it's just my ~cup of tea~
when two worlds collide. the real world and the vacuous ignorant pretend world of daytime television. this interview says much about the state of the world. "people don't what's going on in the world, and what's more they don't know that they don't know" Noam Chomsky. I feel sorry for Josh having to do this, probably a record company thing.
What about songs about doing what the turtle tells you to do. Only Sturgil Simpson can pull that shit off. Shave immediately! Emma. Tell him now please but I do dig the almost mullet and fuck the politics. Much love and I dig those accents can I get one from Costco. Conduit Closing. Cheers awesome
I love Father John Misty but he just comes across as arrogant here. It's not the case that they don't appreciate his sarcasm or can't keep up with him, it's just that he's amusing himself rather than conversing. it's irritating. Granted, some of the questioning is vacuous but personally if I was speaking to someone and they acted in the self-satisfied manner that FJM starts off here, I would go on the offensive, rapidly.
David Timoney seems like he's just having a light hearted conversation. idk where people are getting the arrogance anchors are usually use to pre written scripts and one word answers to make people watching feel comfortable
I agree completely, but I also get the sense that the conversation is amicable and they end with a shakey sense of mutual respect. I think maybe Josh is used to the rudeness of some previous TV interviews and wasn't sure how to handle their polite (but still vacuous) questioning.
I agree, the "stuff" was probably the most cringe-worthy moment of the interview. However I do think overall it was a relatively insightful interview by national media standards. What national morning talk show in the US would even propose any distinction between entertainment and art? Maybe the irony is just too painful to face at the moment...
why? do you feel you'll be judged by the behaviour of certain individuals who happen to be the same colour and nationality as you? Do you judge groups of people based on the behaviour of certain individuals of that colour or nationality? I'm not being mean, Jack, but this is a really stupid thing to say.
Don't be so hard on yourself, son. Misty's one of those blokes that's kind of too cool to promote himself, yet he's desperate for hype. The Roses or the Smiths would never have conceded to appear on BBC Breakfast to be interviewed by lame presenters that don't even like music, yet Misty does. In fact, anyone under 35 will whore themselves for incremental fame. Never sell-out, fam.
I'm ashamed to be a human being. Ashamed for not doing all that it is in my powers to help the needy, animals, which are helpless during our earth-scorching era. That we cannot cooperate to make this a better world. And you're ashamed to be British and white because of a FJM interview? Give me a break, man.
He does sing about stuff to be fair
I feel like this is one of the best things someone interviewing him could've prompted 😂
Presenters are so square, none of his sarcasm pulls off
Which only adds to it
Sarcastic Michael Bublé 😂 He funny af
This guy has hero levels of sarcasm.
His speech says he just smoked a joint, but his hand says he just blew 8 rails of cocaine
or maybe he is just being himself
A sativa joint
Or he has bad social anxiety and has an off key sense of humor
Not a single laugh with "sarcastic Michael Bublé"? What is wrong with those two guys? I'm still laughing as i type this very message
Friggin dry brit humor.... Even tho I knew the joke was coming I still laughed!
Give these two a break, they're used to interviewing TV chefs and pop stars. Likewise, Josh is more used to late night TV where you get twenty minutes to have a conversation, not four.
this so awkward in a beautiful way
In University, Josh minored in Awkward Interviews. Always come prepared.
Is it a trend to try and make every mediocre thing he does seem like a work of art?
Re: make every mediocre thing he does seem like a work of art?
That's what happens when anything gets popular/trendy (cf. Gaga for an extreme example). Obsession can be good for art, depending on which end of the telescope you're looking through.
Art can serve the function of remembering your life.. love that
Love his comment about art vs entertainment. This interview also perfectly encapsulates everything wrong with the braindead British media.
Father John misty is my favorite when I’m feeling depressed :D
This is gold. I love they can't keep up with him. The stuff is overwhelming
They are just barely keeping up with him I love it haha
I love the fact that presenters always try to get deep and thought provoking answers outta Father john, and the dude just takes the piss outta them
He's very clever and talented. He also like to write about things.
This is the greatest interview of all time
Wasn't he the drummer for the Fleet Foxes? I recognize his comedy from a show at the Santa Barbara Bowl about 4 years ago (or so).. He definitely had the crowd laughing a few times -- probably the most vocal member of the group at the time.
Yes, Evan.
He’s very bright. Which is why he’s a star.
lol, his deadpan dry humor totally bombed with these two. Her fake laugh at 4:17 just says it all.
His cynicism reminds me of when I'm coming off psychedelics and realize how much I distaste humanity after forgetting for so long...
That's totally my weed comedown.
He’s almost constantly on psychedelics. He microdoses LSD to help with his depression.
😂😂😂😂😂😂
Jesus I couldnt put a finger on why I relate to him so much and this is definitely it
He's was actually very serious about this interview!
People in the comment section are so think skinned. He's answering their questions with his humor. He didn't even come off as an asshole, you'd think the English would appreciate his dead pan humor.
You can see the line "Sarcastic Michael Bublé" not phasing any of the host and Josh bein like "well ok lets try serious now" lol.
the brits don't approve of his sarcasm
Not the right flavor
Ironic since the British not only invented but fine-honed sarcasm - see Python, Fawlty Towers, etc...
too cynical
Or they somehow can't recognize it from an American.
We get it. He's just not very good at it.
interview looks weirdly retro
That's the UK for ya
i love when he said he describes his music to cab drivers as sarcastic michael buble, I snort/chuckle, and the hosts are utterly silent lol. i cant
He's too smart for them
i can't believe i missed this live
"stuff" love it.
If I could go gay for one man...
Lvnz It would be Rowan Atkinson right? Me too.
Dude 😖 lol
andrew vanwyngarden
You sing about stuff? Question of the year.
Well that was pure comedy
exactly
thaaat mustache. everything he answers is brilliant.
this is hella awkward
nitetimeradio Beautifully awkward.
The interviewers dont really engage in any of his answers here, they just seem to gloss over everything and ask the next question on their list. i mean, hes not the esiest person to talk to obviously, but they could at least try.
Urine Denial because every question he was answering wasnt really in anyway serious
FJM is on a radically different plane to the interviewers. Some of those questions... I guess it is crap morning television
It really is
I have to join that gym.
4:30
The irony here is this interview is pure entertainment.
The fact that the interviewers spent so much time on footwear reinforces the Monty Python outlook on life. 🤪
I'd have a beer with him.
"stuff " I love sarcasm
Lightweight chat with heavyweight thinker
Does he ever answer a question sincerely? Imagine lying every time you're asked a question. must be exhausting
He does, watch his Zane Lowe interview. This just wasn't a very serious interview.
he makes a good comment on the distinction between entertainment and art
Both him and the POTUS are on a roll.
Ty Bill "sarcastic michael buble" sounds like an honest answer.
He's a horse's ass.
The awkward began already when he had nearly matching shirts with the female interviewer. The kind of guy who says weird stuff the subtle way so it takes a second to process and be like "wait what?". In his own way almost as epic as Tim Minchin.
Wasn't expecting an uncomfortable interview... ouch!
Josh cracks me up, I think the hosts did a much better job than what say, "Good Morning America" might have done. They actually made him laugh a few times by playing along. As an American, I can say that most Americans are literalists and won't really get sarcasm this straight faced, they kind of need to be hit over the head with irony and sarcasm to catch on, but it's just my ~cup of tea~
he's brilliant and wont try to fit himself in to talk show boxes
They obviously having a hard time keeping up with him...
STUFF CAN BE A LITTLE OVERWHELMING
lol he's actually playing ball this time around
Jesus! Those presenters are butters. FJM is a G
This whole interview has such a weird energy to it
"stuff"
Why does he look so anxious?
Talk about being on completely different wavelengths. These 2 interviewers must be great at a comedy club. Their names should be Chuckles and Huh?
he looks better with the beard.
Amazing but odd singer just discovered in 2022 ❤️
Someone needs to write satirical music about FJM himself...
he looks like Mozart
why do they put artists like this on main stream programmes , its painful for both sides
Fucking hell this was hilarious
Hahaha oh man
lol they had no idea how to talk to him.
to smart for them, too socially cheeky
They look so salty at the fact that he wakes up so late while they don’t bahahahaha
4:21 what did she ask : "how did you get...." ?? Why did he answered about college ??
subwaysurfer "how did you get into it in the first place?"
Ok thanks but INTO WHAT??!
subwaysurfer haha into performing as the satirical FJM I think? Think she was a bit awkward so the question came out weirdly
J L Ahaha! Ok Yeah I thought the whole interview was kinda awkward
only British interviewers are dry enough to keep up with him
These people don't get him at all hahaha
So embarrassed on behalf of Britain for these presenters. Please believe we do have WAAAAAAYYYYYYY better ones
Easy to see why Piers Morgan on the other side is so popular
He is awkward as fuck with interviews .....love his music mind.
Mr. Tillman looking peak power bottom here.
Well it wasn't as bad as his RadMac interview
he could not care less
my god - they say Americans dont get British irony
palled cure pomedy
its awkward cause they didn't get any of his jokes and so he comes off as arrogant but its because of the interviewers
Creepy laugh at 2:40
when two worlds collide. the real world and the vacuous ignorant pretend world of daytime television. this interview says much about the state of the world. What's with the creepy soft-focus soap opera gels on these cameras? Is this normal in Britain?
Oh wow this is very painful hahah
What happens when you bring one conscious man to a breakfest TV show?
Awkwardness happens.
This interview does not feel real lmao
FJM is smoking these 2 british gits with irony. The irony!
Is it just me or he just has the smallest mouth?
dont you love it when presenters can't have a human conversation?
"you like to sing about stuff?" Great question, but not exactly a moring show guest... unless you have a twisted sense of humour.
poop questions
this mustache is too pornooooo🤔😆
I love Father John Misty but he just comes across as arrogant here. in misty's defence it is pretty fucking early
I agree completely, but I also get the sense that the conversation is amicable and they end with a shakey sense of mutual respect. I think maybe Josh is used to the rudeness of some previous TV interviews and wasn't sure how to handle their polite (but still vacuous) questioning.

"comes off as arrogant here..."
You haven't figured this out until now? I love him to death but yeah, he's arrogant as fuck. But who gives a shit
tweeky hands n feet.
My god BBC breakfast are incredibly dry and pointless. They've got no spark when handling a man like this.
"so you like to sing about stuff?" ~~~~ One of many reasons why i'm embarrassed to be English and white
why? do you feel you'll be judged by the behaviour of certain individuals who happen to be the same colour and nationality as you? Do you judge groups of people based on the behaviour of certain individuals of that colour or nationality?
I'm not being mean, Jack, but this is a really stupid thing to say.
Don't be so hard on yourself, son.

what is stuff in this context, pardon me
I'm ashamed to be a human being. Ashamed for not doing all that it is in my powers to help the needy, animals, which are helpless during our earth-scorching era. That we cannot cooperate to make this a better world. And you're ashamed to be British and white because of a FJM interview?
Give me a break, man.
durrrr what is understatement
presenter have no sense of humor
The BBC making fools of themselves once again
he is a real joker
HOW COULD TALK SHOW HOSTS HAVE NO PERSONALITY?!
Are they just dumb?
It's a news show and British newsreaders are famously dry. Odd choice to have him on here instead of one of our actual talk shows
BOOS
