I want to take up literature degree, and even though I'm just a sophomore, I'm really nervous and anxious about joining university especially from a country where it's easy to be judged and criticised to pick English as a major, so I have about fifty information videos on my watch later playlist😬😅
I just started my lit degree this year and aaaaahhh I don't know what I'm doing! Lol. Thank you so much for this video, it was super helpful! I'm definitely going to have a look at some of those theory books.
That Shakespeare could literally murder someone oh gosh. Shakespeare can murder us both on paper and off haha. Loved watching this video!! I'm a first year and just so ready for my final semester to be over
This was so so interesting! I always enjoy learning about what other people study during their degrees, I'm glad you enjoyed it for the most part (I don't really like poetry either, so I get it)
omg the beginning theory book just took me straight back to first year! I’m currently doing my masters (which I’m loving) but man do I miss my undergrad 🥺
This was super helpful! Keep up the great work! So glad I came across this video because I'm attending my first year of college in the fall and I plan to be a Literature Student
I did a literature + theatre degree in France, and i feel like a cheat. I know I wasn't always the most attentive student, but I feel like we haven't learnt anything, compared to everything you mentioned! There were lots more exams and text analysis than essays (the latter being way more motivating and efficient in terms of learning for me),! I wish I could've done it in England instead (but in an old campus, obviously! I need the architecture). Now Ashleigh, I think I need a video where you give us a summary of all of those theories you've studied in Jane Eyre! You've whetted my appetite there (or if you know of a good ressource where I could find this). I'd love to be able to do more than gush about this wonderful book! haha!
France is more of a "textbook system" when it comes to education. They tend to teach you how to check all the boxes to do good in exams but not to think out of the box (at least that's how my experience was)
Ahhh Ashleigh this is such a brilliant and really informative video! It’s bringing back so many memories for me. I finished my BA English degree in 2013 and it doesn’t look like the reading lists have changed all that much 😂 The Woman in White was such a good read! Hours spent researching in the library and that critical theory book! wow I never thought I’d see that book again haha
I’m not sure the reading lists have been changed ever 😂😂 ahhh yay another fan of The Woman in White! 🙌🏻 ahaha I feel like that theory book saved a lot of people
This video hurts my heart a little bit, because all these classics you mentioned and these intense focuses on literary theory are what I EXPECTED my literature degree to be like, but instead i just hated 80% of what I read and I feel like I didn't learn any theory. I've actually been missing academia and analysing literature SO much but I can't imagine studying further in South Africa because I feel like it's just going to more of the same😒
Thank you so much for the argument/counter argument analogy. It made so much sense to me! I would love to try that the next time I write an essay/assignment. Thank you again :)
Granted, I'm in the states. But professors always had us get the anthologies. I had a 20 pound bookbag most semesters. 💁💁💁😂 I'm getting ready to go into library science and I CANNOT WAIT to look at books in a different context.
This video is amazing! Last night, i found it and since the first minutes I liked it so much. Congratulations for this beautiful and scholar girl-youtuber. She has talent and patience to tell and explain her ideas. I also want to study a PhD in Literature, Linguistics, or Art History, in my native language. Greetings from Sonora, México.
This is making me miss my uni days, I got an integrated masters degree in Biochemistry back in 2017. Really interesting to see what literature includes! I now currently work for the University rather than studying there, not quite the same!
@@AFrolicThroughFiction I can’t remember the full title because it was so long 😂 but it was along the lines of Victorian ideas on marriage and madness! I also wrote about Jane Eyre and Great Expectations
Hello! What a great video :) As someone trying to work out whether I want to do a Literature degree, this has been really enlightening. Thank you so much. It has really helped me in to make the decision that it is what I want to study. A decision which has taken an agonisingly long time. Cheers :) Completely off topic: Is there a slight Northern Irish tint to your accent? I can't place your accent, but it's really nice!
How would you study if you aren't a native English person and you have chased English literature? I know this question is weird. But please do recommend some tips to learn English literature if you are an international student. I'm struggling a lot to improve my skills in English 😪
my major is psychology but i really want to learn about english poets, authors, literature etc. after i watch Anne with an e and normal people. and idk where to start. also my first language is not english and i try to find more uncomplicated books to read. i’ll be grateful if someone can help
if you don’t mind this question, did you take up any part-time employment whilst perusing (and excelling) in your degree in literature? i’m starting my first year in september, and i’m really nervous about balancing my time well!
i’m transferring into my university’s arts program after taking engineering for a year and i’m used to taking 6-7 courses per term but i’m not really sure how many courses is a reasonable amount for literature and social sciences. could anyone give me some help?
That really depends on how your university runs and how they differentiate between courses/classes etc. For instance, I would have just one course but 4 classes within that, so it doesn’t sound like a system I’d be able to compare to 😅
Honestly my answer is just because I want to 😂 I love academics and studying literature, so I’ll continue doing so as long as I’m able. I don’t have any set plans for when I leave, as I’m pretty happy with where I am now regarding job etc so it’ll just be a case of seeing where I go!
This is what I am afraid of. No job for English majors. Recently I was thinking of getting English degree as part time study but I don't know is it worth the investment or not
Not at the same time no - I did the full time bachelors, and had a part time job during some of that. Once completed I gained two jobs and started a part time masters, but ultimately quit the masters degree as it was too much to do at once
I currently have two jobs - working for a book subscription/special edition service and a bookish online content creator. I previously worked in a bookstore, and had vague interest in the publishing industry until my current jobs. English literature can lead to a lot! It gets a bad rep as it doesn’t have a direct step by step process to a job like some degrees, but there only because it’s so open!
@@AFrolicThroughFiction That sounds very interesting. You've strenghtened my decision to study an english degree. Could you make a video about your jobs? I'd love to know more about being a bookish online content creator.
