    I had a few questions about you guys on what gear I use to record the Montage screen. Here's what I use:
    USB to HDMI from Montage: amzn.to/2yEy4wz
    Video to USB video capture: amzn.to/39XnihQ (not sure why it's so expensive now, but that's what I got ages ago!)

    Happy new 2020 everyone! On this video I play my updated list of my favourite guitar sounds on the Yamaha Montage and MODX!

    As someone who is not trained in theory, I really rely on a sound to inspire me. It truly is an amazing piece of hardware. And of course, you do it all more justice than I can in most instances, thanks Dom :).

    Yep the acoustic instruments on MODX are a different league from my 'classic Motif 7' back in the day (which I thought at that time were stunning!...). Must spend more time with these patches, cheers Dom. Looking forward to your NAMM coverage next week 🙂Happy New Year btw! 🍻😎🎹🎶👍

    How funny. We've just added Hotel California to our set list for 2020. I click as usual on any/every video by Dom and there it is! Great timing. Guitarist/MODX7 performer here. Thanks so much for posting! Gee I hope Don Henley doesn't see this ... he has a habit of taking down any and everything related to the Eagles from UA-cam ... at least in the US. I'd better watch this now!
    UPDATE: 12 minutes and 23 seconds later. AWESOME performance, Dom! Beautiful playing. Inspiring use of the Yamaha. Ready to go fire up my MODX7 and explore. Thanks again!

      I got one last week partially of him too along side my korg kronos which the guitar sounds on that compared to the montage is one of the reasons why i got it. amazing. although the piano on the montage for me is a bit soft for some reason and doesnt sound like it does in videos which was kind of disappointing.

    I Dom, I bought a MODX last January. My first real "hardware" keyboard I've used to any great extent since my old Korg M1. I had bought an MX49 and a MOTIF ES rack years before, but still used software mainly, my old Korg M1, and my Roland module.
    I have a great distorted guitar on my old Korg M1 that I "can't live without". I use it as the 2nd guitarist in the rock bands I've played in , covering music from the 70s, 80s & 90s with it. It was a rom file on a circuit board that got installed inside the old M1 known as the "Plus One" from Invision. Korg USA liked this board so much, the last batch of M1's included this board. It was roughly $500 installed in 1993.
    This particular patch just fits countless famous songs I've covered better than any other I've been able to find some far. I've triggered it from a wireless MIDI Keytar for 15 years, and wired before that.
    The MODX is very capable when it comes to electric & acoustic guitars. I still haven't found an equivalent patch to this one however (in any synth or software). I haven't been able to find this patch sampled for another synth or Kontakt, and I depended on it so much, I had to buy a 2nd M1 with this board in case something happened to M1. Recently, one of my M1's went down.
    I would love to have a similar patch recreated for MODX. Who could I speak to at Yamaha about possibly recreating this sound by sampling or other methods? I'm sure tons of people would love to have it. The main this, is when when you play a power chord and let it sustain, it doesn't sound fake. Blends right in with a real guitar. Also, pressing the mod wheel adds an effect, and aftertouch vibrato.
    I think the MODX offering flagship power in a super portable package, for less than half the price sets the MODX to take over the title of best selling synth of all time. Korg has not offered an equivalent Kronos to compete. So far. In the mean time, I believe sound designers will make sounds for Montage/MODX first in great numbers due to shear volume of the platform, the reasons the M1 & DX7 became so huge.

    • @Jason75913
      @Jason75913 4 роки тому +1

      Got any sort of previews or anything of that special M1 guitar patch? Now I'm interested in seeing if I can dupe it with some synth or another.
      I doubt MODX will outsell previous best sellers like DX7 or current ones like the MX keyboards and Juno-DS
      MOXF was a portable version of the previous Motif XF flagship, too, as one example, so MODX is hardly the first.
      Krome EX can still throw down with MODX regardless and for less money, still a great value even if it doesn't hold a candle to the Kronos.

    • @KONNECTORAS
      @KONNECTORAS 4 роки тому

      Well, Korg PA series can emulate plucked instruments much more reallisticlu than Kronos due to the DNC functions.
      Yamaha since Motif XF can also emulate articulations on live playing via SA functions.
      Montage & MODX keeped these funtions, so its up to the programmer to feed the right samples into the machine.

  • @madness8556
    @madness8556 2 роки тому

    You're emulations of acoustic and electric guitar sounds on a keyboard are fabulous! Keep up the great work buddy! Yamaha has had by far the best acoustic and electric guitar and electric bass sounds in a keyboard since they released the Motif ES series workstations in 2003. Roland is second best but Korg can honestly hide their head in shame when it comes to their guitar and bass sounds, even in their multi gigabyte Kronos and Nautilus ROM. My 1995 Trinity has better guitar sounds than the 2021 Kronos and Nautilus that has only 24MB of waveform ROM, not several gigabytes!

    I am a guitarist myself, too. Anyhow I enjoy playing guitar software products and think some of them have come really far already. I have some really old sounds for example in a former YELLOWTOOLS product INDEPENDENCE PRO (now by MAGIX). Especially the acoustic nylons are still nice.
    Of course it is always better to know, how a real instrumentalist plays, to get the virtual instruments near to the original. Same with vocals. I have tried around with some VOCALOIDS and can say, with a lot of programming, it is already possible to create quite convincing vocals.

    It's very difficult to play guitars like this on a keyboard.

    • @BrunodeSouzaLino
      @BrunodeSouzaLino 4 роки тому +4

      First thing to avoid is closed voicing chords. You can do those on guitar, but they require weird fingerings and don't sound quite right. Also, you can only have as many ringing notes as you have strings on the instrument, so you're not gonna have 10 note chords unless you are playing an open tuned 10 string guitar. When it comes to vibrato, if it's the finger one, make it using the pitch wheel, as it's impossible to vibrate down in pitch using your fingers. Also avoid that sliding into note most workstations think guitarists do when they hit notes hard as much as possible. You're not gonna get close to guitar sounds unless you can seamlessly switch between picking, picking muted, muted and legato sounds by means of playing or expression, as a guitar player can easily switch between these per note if desired. The same goes for the 4+ types of harmonics you can make.

    Kind of a unrelated question. When working in a DWA say Garage Band. Is it possible to use the sounds from my Montage and not the VST of the program?

    Awesome...great playing-no blisters ;-)...but for distorted leads I prefer my vintage Roland jd 800 with a real Marshall Amp. Nothing beats that😊

      yep. synthetic guitar(like) sounds over an fx board into a tube amp really is a treat. not to say the modx sounding bad, though.

      OMG that Roland JD800 factory distorted guitar sound is phenomenal! The Korg Wavestation also has a fantastic lead guitar sound called ZZ Lead, as does the Ensoniq TS10 with its Rude Guitar program.

    To me the toughest part of playing guitar on the keyboard is that it is easy to play things that are technically impossible to play on guitar - and that ends up sounding phony and fake. Knowing how to play guitar to some extent helps because you can then try to limit what you're playing on the keyboard to those sounds, intervals and chords that can realistically be performed on guitar. That's tough to learn.

      gsmac1969 indeed that’s the trick. It helps if you know a little bit of the basics of how a guitar works :)

    I just saw a video for Korg Kronos’s guitar sound, but I must say these guitar sounds are much better. But the distortion and overdrive guitar sounds still can be much better. I know it. For I’ve got a Yamaha Montage myself.

    HI~ How to play strumming acoustic guitar on MODX ?

  • @TonyWinston
    @TonyWinston 4 роки тому +1

    My favorite acoustic guitar sound was on the motif es. The sample was discontinued by the time the XF came out. The Barcelona patch on the MODX is similar but the ES had a really warm sounding patch called nylon in the general midi section. Yamaha samples are the best. Kurzweil has a nice acoustic called bling guitar. It's on the pc3le6. Not sure about other kurzweils... Its probably on the later models.

    Acoustic guitar fret sounds in the Montage😊
    Apparently Korg doesn't think a little detail like that is important enough to put in their sound engines.😠

    I bought a modx6 on guitar center brand new, and its sounds quality so bad and poor. And I see all these videos on UA-cam about modx and montage sounding so good and when I compare mine using the same performances mine doesn’t sound the same. Can anyone help me to fix this issue.
