Cy Gorman - Praise to Mañjuśrī

Khyentse Vision Project invited Cy Gorman to create a piece of music to go with our metered version of the famous Praise to Mañjuśrī. Cy shares his background and process here:
“I’m an interaction and digital media designer and sound artist, and I’m interested in creating resonant audiovisual expressions of Dharmakaya through the integrated application of sound and lighting design, which I believe can directly influence the wellbeing of sentient beings and the environments they inhabit. Underpinning my musical nature are decades of music production, sound design and compositional training, which I have been able to combine with my Tibetan Buddhist studies and practice. I also integrate Nada Yoga and microtonal harmonic musicology inspired by teachings and transmissions received by the Gundecha Brothers (IND), and in particular the late Ramakant Gundecha. I want to attune and align my practice with buddhadharma to create powerful environments or “resonant Dharmakaya.”
For my compositional arrangement of the prayer “Praise to Mañjuśrī,” I combined the Mañjuśrī seed mantra in a 7/8 time signature with the metered rhyming couplets in an iambic pentameter. It resulted in a free-flowing stream-like quality, grounded in an even-paced poetic rhythm. The resting tonal center is in a major key upon which graceful minor chords create cyclically uplifting compassionate energy.
