- Alan and Marty return to another Wednesday HM Quickblast session. This time we shall be discussing and ranking the Immortal Discography!
Big time wrestling fetish boots MAY have been purchased. Grim and frostbitten crab dances MAY happen. I guess you're going to have to tune in and find out how it all pans out in the land "Where Dark and Light Don't Differ!"
I think Blizzard Beasts is the most misunderstood Immortal album amongst the fanbase. The whole album is godly! Cheers.
Perfect length! As far as deep dives, I'd really like a Darktrhone, Incantation, and/or Immolation ranking. Thanks for the great conversation! This got me to listen to all of the Immortal's and so far, I'm loving their attitude, aura, and, most importantly, sound.
Catching up on Thursday night. Battles in the North, Blizzard beast , Diabolical, pure Holocaust and In the Heart of Winter are my top 5. Great stream.
I like your comparison of these guys to manowar- it made me see them in a new light. \m/
I would love to see a TESTAMENT ranking. Especially with the recent departure of Gene Hoglan. They have an interesting journey. Came out strong then had a weird experimentation era then came back strong.
Demonaz, the fire and ferociousness behind Immortal. His riffs were what set them apart from other pioneering 2nd wave bands. Abbath wrote incredible material when he took over guitars, for sure. But the supersonic hellstorm was all but vanished.
Above all, I hope Abbath will get better and be able to reconcile with Demonaz (and Horgh too, although he's not with Immortal now). Nonetheless, Northern Chaos Gods finally brought that old Immortal attitude back.
I agree with you. The last album was surprisingly fantastic. It indeed did have that old Immortal spirit again and I'm also psyched to hear the new album. Thanks for watching!
@@HeavyMetallurgy Can't wait for it. Loved the new song release!
Perfect weather for this topic.
Icy tundra here the east.
I called the cops. It turns out that not liking Sons Of Northern Darkness is not a crime. Could have fooled me.
Good one lads! My faves also interchange from the top 3 on Marty's rank. My entry poinT on Immortal was hearing songs off the debut on radio and thinking how Bathory-zed it all sounded, then taken back few years later when they got into warp speed but then I started loving it. As bands for future endeavours I'd suggest: Emperor, Satyricon, Iced Earth, Agent Steel, Carnivore/Type O Negative, My Dying Bride, Warlord(us), Virgin Steele, Manowar, Judas Priest, Saxon, the ancient arcane trio Cirith Ungol/Brocas Helm/Manilla Road, Testament, Voivod, Razor, Anvil, M.Angel, Deicide, Obituary, Sepultura, etc (some usual suspects)
Oh my. My list:
1. Battles in the North
2. Pure Holocaust
3. Blizzard Beasts
4. Diabolic Fullmoon Mysticism
5. Northern Chaos Gods
6. At the Heart of Winter
7. Damned in Black
8. Sons of Northern Darkness
9. All shall Fall
All shall fall last?? I’ve always felt that one was sadly maligned by the fans. Never understood it. Thanks for sharing your post! Take care.
1. Pure Holocaust (Demonaz' & Abbath's magnus opus, bar none)
2. Diabolical Fullmoon Mysticism + Battles in the North + At the Heart of Winter
3. Blizzard Beasts
4. Sons of Northern Darkness
5. Northern Chaos Gods
6. Damned in Black + All Shall Fall
ranking sons of northern darkness last was a sad way for me to discover that marty had gone deaf.
there are more amazing riffs in within the dark mind, one by one, and in my kingdom cold than on their first three albums combined. mountains of might and battlefields on blizzard beasts are where and when abbath leveled up in terms of riffs and songcraft.
I loved this. Sad I couldn’t watch it live. Pure Holocaust has always been my favorite album. Would love to see Bathory or Darkthrone ( I don’t think you have done those yet?)
On the legal matter/issues of the band, it was actually Demonaz who tried to get the Immortal name as a private trademark, not Horgh. Horgh disputed it in court and won, so that's why the band is disputed today, noone owns the trademark. Horgh was not aware that Demonaz filed the band name as a trademark either. Anyways, my ranking is down below :)
1. At the Heart of Winter
2. Pure Holocaust
3. Battles in the North
4. Blizzard Beasts
5. Sons of Northern Darkness
6.Diabolical Fullmoon Mysticism
7.Northern Chaos Gods
8. All Shall Fall
9. Damned in Black
1. Pure Holocaust
2. Blizzard Beasts
3. At the Heart of Winter
4. Diabolical Fullmoon Mysticism
5. Northern Chaos Gods
6. Battles in the North
7. Sons of Northern Darkness
8. All Shall Fall
9. Damned in Black
The 1st 5 albums are great and Northern Chaos Gods was a return to form. I've gone back to listen to that repeatedly since it was released but I could have that or Battles in the North at 5. Have seen a number of good reviews for All Shall Fall so I'll give it another listen.
It's a shame nothing has happened since Northern Chaos Gods. I heard that at the time Demonaz was planning for a tour with him just doing vocals, Horgh on drums and they'd have a touring guitarist and bassist.
Interesting view on sons. I think it's their best.
For quality and quantity, Immortal are my favorite black metal band.
9. Battles in the North
8. Diabolical Fullmoon Mysticism
7. Northern Chaos Gods
6. Damned in Black
5. All Shall Fall
4. At the Heart of Winter
3. Sons of Northern Darkness
2. Pure Holocaust
1. Blizzard Beasts
Love Immortal, I'm in the camp that they lost a certain something when Demonaz stopped writing riffs.
1. Pure Holocast
2. Blizzard Beasts
3. Battles In the North
4. ATHOW
5. DFM
6. SOND
7. DIB
8. All Shall Fall
9. Northern Chaos Gods
Immortal had a unique style in the 90's and precisely the sound of those albums that defined them really. I'm not interested at all in Immortal after 1999/At the Heart of Winter. However with Demonaz back it's cool. Hate the new logo from 1999 onwards as well.
Do Bathory's discography. I don't think that's been done yet?
Good sports
My favorite black metal catalogue by a single band easily. Ranked: 1. Sons of Northern Darkness 2 At the Heart of Winter 3 Damned in Black 4 Blizzard Beasts 5 Northern Chaos Gods 6 All Shall Fall 7 Battles in the North 8 Pure Holocaust 9 Diabolical Fullmoon Mysticism
In My Kingdom Cold, Tragedies Blows at Horizon, and Withstand the Fall of Time by Immortal rank with Come Damnation (Keep of Kalessin) and Loss and Curse of Reverence (Emperor) and Skies at Our Feet (Drudkh) as the very best black metal song ever.
alan out
MAYHEM - all of it.
I think the big problem with immortal is there lack of infamy. They didn’t participate in any of the craziness, and I think that really lowers the curtain from the Ominous veil of Mayhem, burzum, emperor, etc. I agree completely that their self awareness of how ridiculous black metal really is really was a detriment to their popularity. Yeah the boys in the band have talked about the church burnings and stuff and they seem to think it was dumb because I’ll just take tax dollars and rebuild them. An absolute waste of time in their opinion. I didn’t like the new abbath Track at all either Marty. I think if we made a secondary big 4 in Norway it would be Immortal, satyricon, enslaved, and gorgoroth. Boys, I 100% agree blizzard beasts is not all it’s cracked up to be. Sons of northern darkness got me into the band. As well as battles in the north. I think Battle is the general consensus as to being the best
Holy shit Alan's ranking is awful. What is wrong with him? Lol
LIVOR MORTIS is a rip off label, stay away
