    Interesting to see the especially European connection here. The exchanges in the past on the one hand and the common Indo European roots on the other. Saw that the French word for shower is the base for the German word as well - Same pronounciation ("Douchez" - "Dusche"). On the other hand the word shower ("Schauer") is used mostly for rainy days ("rain shower"). Also "prüfen" is a German and English ("prove") word that originated in old French ("prover"). In addition, a lot of words have common base ("Bürste" vs. "Brossier" or "baigner" vs. "baden"). There are a lot of other words like "Villa" or "Rentier" that are now common in German as well. I just also mentioned to demonstrate that not only English has inherited words of French origin, although I have to admit that the list in English is for sure much longer as English has twice the amount of words when compared to German.
    Some interesting comparisons can be found here: "Il a une super villa dans le sud" - "He has an amazing villa in the south" - "Er hat eine super Villa im Süden" or "Il est président" - "He is (the) president" - "Er ist (der) Präsident". Considering that the base for "avoir" is the latin "habere" and that it looks much like the German "haben" or English "have", we can even see more common roots. I know that most people might only be interested in French here or maybe in the similarities between French and English, but maybe one or the other also finds this interesting.

    • @metphmet
      @metphmet 2 роки тому

      The origin of English is essentialy a mixture of old German ( low German which means from the North) for grammar and vocabulary, old French and Latine for vocabulary.
      French comes mostly from Latine but 15% of its vocabulary have a germanic origin ( Francique) .

    This is excellent and extremely useful but....... for a language where the gender of nouns is a key part of the language, I really don't understand why the gender (or the article un/le une/la) is not given with every noun eg le sac. We are left to infer the gender from the sentence.
