OK So there is clearly some misunderstanding about my hoody. I didn't mean to cause offence. It's very common to have Japan on clothes in the UK. Superdry is a massive brand here and their clothes often have Japan written all over them. I have worn this item of clothing in multiple other videos so this was not intentionally worn to provoke or anger the people of South Korea in this specific reaction.
Thank you to everyone who has taken the time to be gentle and explain the issue to me. I appreciate it.
It's all love people. Let's focus on this amazing Korean artist and leave politics out of it. It ruins everything ❤️

Thanks for your broad tolerance. I am Korean. Let me explain a little. The clothes you wear are fine in themselves. This kind of thing Koreans feel. Is he confused between Korea and Japan now? Or was it because you thought Korea was a Japanese subordinate country? In general, it feels bad to treat Koreans as Japanese. It's just a misunderstanding that happened there. No problem if you didn't have that intention. (It's because other countries have that kind of story that makes each other feel bad due to various historical quarrels with neighboring countries.)

Dolly Parton wrote, composed, and sang "I Will Always Love You", making it a big hit in 1973. Whitney Houston did a cover, and made it a bigger hit in 1992, nearly 2 decades later.

I feel for youtubers who are trying to make ends meet through their diligence and wish you well. Sohyang has a strong following and her phenomenal performances are great draws for traffic. However, I'd wish to see that when you react to her performances, you can a momentary respite while simply being engrossed her the glorious vocal excellence and sheltered from the daily grinds. For some who are ready, they may even find a spiritual safe haven to reap the warmth and healing from Sohyang's singing.
While Sohyang's vocal talent immense, as you commented, her ability to captivate her audience and deliver the emotional impact is a truly rare gift few artists have. She continues to stun, shock, amaze and move her listeners performance after performance, just like this jaw-dropping rendition of "I Have Nothing" here.
Look forward to your visit to Sohyang.

Your summary pretty much captures the essence of So Hyang, otherworldly vocal talent accompanied by an essential goodness that is always at the core of the story she is telling equals a performer that makes us feel things in a way that very few singers are capable of. If you want the perfect bookend to this performance, go with I Will Always Love You which is performed with an acoustic arrangement in the original key (unlike this song which starts in the key Whitney ended in.) It's a different experience but no less affecting. Looking forward to your tour through her catalog!

Charles, you know, I have listened to So Hyang sing now more than a thousand times I am sure since I first discovered her almost two years ago. And I _never ever_ get tired of it! Where did this woman come from and what kind of water does she drink? I don't know if there has ever been a voice like hers before, or such incredible performing ability. She is just completely off the scale and the one every great singer will be measured by for a very long time to come. Anyway, I just had to say that and acknowledge that she is _the_ best. That so much talent is squared away in such a tiny woman just leaves a person stupefied ...

We all wonder if So Hyang is human or from another planet. Current odds are that she’s from another planet, with an outside chance she’s actually an angel come down from Heaven. We have never heard anyone sing like her, or be able to hold an audience in the palm of her hand until she lets them go. She does all the musical arrangements herself (with the input of her musical assistants), teaches vocal technique at a South Korean university and speaks four languages. Korean, English, French and Vietnamese.
Let me catch my breath. OK.
She is a cancer survivor from uterine cancer at the age of 20, just after getting married, and states very plainly that God saved her life due to the prayers of her church. But this left her without the ability to have children so she decided to dedicate her life to being a Contemporary Christian Gospel singer and has refused recording contracts from the biggest corporations in the world. She only wants to sing for charities, churches and while doing missionary work, to strengthen those suffering through difficult times. She also says her voice is “from God.” David Foster, Josh Groban, Michael Bolton and others have all travelled to Asia to work with her.
She contracted hepatitis B from a blood transfusion during her cancer surgery and it clings to her to this day. Because of this she is prone to catching pneumonia but has sang perfectly while suffering from it in her live performance of “You Raise Me Up” before Shane Filan of Westlife on South Korean TV: ua-cam.com/video/te_L9ofhUt8/v-deo.html She has asked those who love her singing to pray that God keep pneumonia away from her, she has suffered from it on so many occasions. Imagine how she must feel with this coronavirus floating around everywhere!
She just turned 42 on April 5, 2020, though in Korean culture she would be 43 because you are deemed to be one year old when you are born. She was about 37 when she sang this version of “Arirang Alone”, their unofficial national anthem based on a 600 year old folk song expressing their desire to reunify north and south: vimeo.com/308253527
After being sick with pneumonia eight times from 2016 through to 2020, and considering giving up singing altogether, she decided to enter a televised singing contest called “King of the Masked Singers” in 2017 and won six consecutive times, which has catapulted her into international fame from the performances being posted on UA-cam.
Whitney Houston’s former manager saw her on UA-cam and showed her to Oprah Winfrey, who brought her to David Foster’s attention. Foster then contacted So Hyang and went to Japan in order to perform eight concerts together at Tokyo’s famous Blue Note Club in late-2018.
Here is the interview where So Hyang related the events: ua-cam.com/video/EqeE_1nP-Kk/v-deo.html (Be sure to turn on English subtitles.)
Here is the version of “I Have Nothing” Oprah and the rest watched on UA-cam: ua-cam.com/video/T4UyIMkdy4M/v-deo.html
She could be an international Super Star if she wanted to be but has decided that it would ruin her spiritually, quoting Proverbs 14:12 “There is a way that seems right to a man, But its end is the way of death.”
In a South Korean television interview So Hyang conceded that she struggled with her desire for fame for a number of years, going into the basement in her home numerous times and closing the door so she could complain vehemently to God that He was holding her back from becoming famous due to her health problems and other unforeseeable events. Then she later saw a Korean TV drama where the talented daughter of a very successful businessman was positive she would take over when her father retired. But he left the management of the company to a woman she hated, so she had a fit and lay kicking and screaming on the floor. So Hyang says she saw herself in that young woman and then understood that God was keeping her from developing self-destructive character by withholding celebrity status from her. ua-cam.com/video/rl-jX9kBsEs/v-deo.html (Again, turn on English subtitles.) So as a consequence she does not pursue fame or fortune and actually has no social media presence whatsoever.
What can one say about such a person? She is a literal Wonder Woman! And we need about a billion more just like her!
On Oct. 5, 2020, it was revealed that So Hyang turned down yet another contract offer, this time from Sony Music. www.koreaherald.com/view.php?ud=20200921000995
“Debuting in [the] US was my utmost goal for the past 20 years. But when I got a call from the US agency, I politely rejected, as I realized that what I wanted most was not becoming famous,” she said.
“I think singers are very susceptible to arrogance, especially when they hear the screaming from crowds on stage. It can make you feel like as if you’ve become God.”
“And I’m perfectly okay with sharing my music via UA-cam, which can reach tens of millions of people all over the world without making me feel stuck up. Maybe that’s why I was born in this era.”
So Hyang is just the most amazing singer, Christian and human being. She is beautiful both inside and out, and so humble, with a stage charisma and smile that is off the charts.
In Korean dictionaries 소향 (So Hyang) has several meanings.
    • First is a type of Korean traditional music.
    • Second is to burn incense on a burner.
    • Third is to go toward.
But these meanings are rarely used today. 소향 is also the name of a heroine in a Korean traditional novel. So her name is well chosen, and you can take your pick!
Please analyze her performance of “Bridge Over Troubled Water”: ua-cam.com/video/C6iHh4yBxCo/v-deo.html
Also, please react to her version of “The Power of Love”: ua-cam.com/video/LrNkVRrK7_I/v-deo.html
Plus this beautiful duet with her friend Lee Hi where they do Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons’ “Can’t Take My Eyes Off Of You”: vimeo.com/439148918
And this version of her singing “Oh Holy Night”: vimeo.com/322716334
Here she performs “Lean On Me” before Michael Bolton, who called her a vocal “virtuoso” after her performance: ua-cam.com/video/GvsgCllcNPE/v-deo.html
This is a wonderful performance of “His Eye Is On The Sparrow”: ua-cam.com/video/H1vppvq_F-8/v-deo.html
And finally “Will You Be There”: ua-cam.com/video/nBdSpexUxik/v-deo.html
Here’s an English language interview with her that I’m sure you will enjoy: ua-cam.com/video/N2u_pmoWxj8/v-deo.html Her English is perfect when she sings and almost perfect when she is doing interviews.
    OK, I’ll stop gushing now.
Well, one more gush. In an interview with a Turkish music producer So Hyang revealed that she can hit Eb7 and D7 in practise. However, she never goes above the 6th octave in performances. Since she starts at D3 that is more than a 4 octave range ... so how about them apples???! Here it is: ua-cam.com/video/VnPAkryrygQ/v-deo.html
Oh, I just remembered, she is also a published novelist and theological treatist, and a very good stage actress, which she proved by playing Julie Andrews’ part in the South Korean production of “The Sound of Music.” Moreover, she sang the “Moana” part in the Korean version of the Disney film, does the musical vocals for many South Korean television dramas, and is a talented artist and cartoonist.
She can also play the piano and guitar. Is there anything this genius level woman can’t do?
I really must also compliment the choir, orchestra and audio/video production people So Hyang uses. They are all top notch from what I can see and hear. The Korean people are easily as talented as anyone else.
As you can see, I am a shameless fan.

Many Koreans are nationalistic and ignorant of history and are vulnerable to political agitation.
They often put emotions ahead of rationality, so even the simple letters of Tokyo, Japan on your clothes make them emotionally angry.

@@TheCharlieSmithChannel I'm sorry that I'm not up to explaining it clearly. I guess the difference may be from the fact that Gamany publicly admitted the criminality of their invasion and has been willingly trying to atone for what they did, while Japan haven't. And we were under the Japanese colonial rule for 40 years. And while it was a war between the U.K. and Germany, it was not the case for us. It was one-way suppression and exploitation.
So the level, character, and duration of the feud might not be the same. I'm a Korean but even so I cannot dare to fathom how much pain our farthers went through during Japanese rule..
Please don't get me wrong. I don't intend to compare the severity of what you went through with what we did. I admit that we all have our own wounds to overcome.

    • @TheCharlieSmithChannel
      @TheCharlieSmithChannel  3 роки тому

Well Germany didn't actually pay the UK any reparations directly. An inter-allied reparations agency was set up and we got $108 million in industrial assets. As I understand it, Korea has had $800 million in various forms. I'm not saying that is necessarily adequate but its a lot more than we got for half a million dead people

      @silver-Iining 3 роки тому +3

@@TheCharlieSmithChannel I'm not familiar with history. But even if the numbers you mentioned are true, it was not in the name of the 'reparation' for what they did. They just name the money 'aid'. They don't seem to admit what they did. Maybe it's not about money; it's about attitude. Sorry for the insufficiency of my knowledge. That's all I can say :)

Though Whitney and Celine, and Mariah influenced So Hyang, it's actually the other way around. There is a little Whitney in So Hyang, and a little Celine, in So Hyang, and a little Whitney in So Hyang, but she is all of them plus herself!! So Hyang's "YOU RAISED ME UP"!! Don't leave out!!!

Power ballads are really the best way for Sopranos to show off their capabilities. Glad they didn't disappear completely. It's also important to note how the arrangement effects the performance.
So Hyang is incredible at making songs not meant for her voice into something that is perfect for her to the smallest nuances.
Morissette represents a counter to So Hyang, similar to Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston. Minus whistles the two have different tones and i can't pick one over the other.
They are more different than they are similar.

But why are we so vigilant about only Sohyang? I've seen Sohyang talk a few times while coaching a song covered by Sohyang on Mori's Online Lesson. Coaches who teach lessons are bad for the number of views on UA-cam promotion support for dozens of people!!! Are you an application or a lesson, or have you been recognized by ○○○? There is one other vocalist that you really need to hear who is on the same level as Sohyang. Her name is Morissette Amon from the Philippines. She has just as much power and skill as Sohyang with a little bit more of an extended lower register. The thing I also love about her are her "ornamentations" she adds to her vocals. A couple of songs I would recommend to start you off on your journey are her covers of 'Rise Up' by Andra Day ( ua-cam.com/video/aNBhkfuyTgo/v-deo.html ) and 'Never Enough' from The Greatest Showman ( ua-cam.com/video/fjn7X6ywq90/v-deo.html ). Incidentally, Sohyang also covered 'Never Enough' ( ua-cam.com/video/k5WqGIPjqtc/v-deo.html ). Perhaps I could make a bit of a selfish request/suggestion for a double reaction to both versions. I think you will be gobsmacked by both.
