Giving all honor, all respect and All praise to the greatest assembly of musicians since the Beatles, I have followed Sly and the Stone Family since 1967 and immediately knew that they were the most innovative, energetic, invigorating, an explosively brilliant assemble to merge on the world scene of all times. The political consciousness of Sylvester Stewart was unmatched by ANY other artist save possibly John Lennon or Bob Dillan or Bob Marley. The Family Stone literally changed modern Popular music forever with the innovations of their instruments and voices which have been imitated and copied but never duplicated for decades! Hail to Sly and the Family Stone!
I dare anyone not to bob their head when those drums come in.
James Brown, Sly Stone ,George Clinton, Motown brought the Funk . Jimi Hendrix brought the new guitar sound. Miles Davis brought the new Jazz. BB King , Albert King , Freddie King , Buddy Guy keep the blues alive . Chuck Berry and Little Richard are the real kings of Rock & Roll.
And let's not forget the legendary FATS DOMINO!!

I wore this record out as a kid - only white kid in the midwest with cool parents :-) - LG Is one of my heroes - this song is a master class in FEEL - I love tech, but it destroyed music - misused in the hands of those that made too much money for other people's work... Prince might be the exception.

Honest question, what exactly are they doing, I mean, are they just reviewing the original master track's instrumental reel and reminiscing? That's awesome and I love the song, always have, but is there something else to this video I'm missing? I feel dumb asking this, especially as a funk musician. So well. Anyway, always one of my favorites of all time right here, deluxe funk, on par with the best funk n soul songs ever written in my opinion :))
I think you’re spot on that they’re just reminiscing, there’s a couple others on UA-cam I’d highly highly recommend if you haven’t seen em. It’s a shame they haven’t released the sessions for some of these songs cause it’s really interesting to hear them deconstructed a bit

Amazing to see this! Long story short, I got into Sly and the family in '97 in high school. I friend of mine stole a greatest hits cassette off of our teacher's desk to use it as a blank tape to record some hip hop over it. I popped it into my cassette deck and was blown away with what I heard. Something would not let me hit the record button. Instead, I ended up buying every Sly and the Family Stone album I could find on vinyl and returned the cassette back to my teacher on the last day of school. By the way, why isn't Larry Graham here?
Lamont Gates seems there's still a riff between Larry and Sly. I see each of them with the other band members, but not together.

Beautiful moments here. One has to love seeing Sly amp himself up and find the same unity with his friends and musicians that he did all those years ago.
Thanks to whoever had the bright idea of getting the band back together again. More groups should do this, I'm sure their fans would love it.

Sly & larry aren't on good terms these days the last time they say each other Sly got irritated at a tribute concert for him &larry started talking this jehova witness stuff to sly &Rusty replace larry at the reunion according to Rusty.
this was the only place I could find that funky Larry Grahm bass line intro. Vevo's Official studio sound track, Is Officialy A rip off. I mean, I realize Larry went on to Grahm Central Station, But GEEZE MAN! Y'all didn't need to piss on his contribution.
I'm not making something out of nothing, YOU are! the original studio cut had more of an intro to it. Being a post disco born kid, I'm sure you wouldn't know anything about it, except how to make an argument! if it was THE WHOLE original, I never would have said shit, in the first place you retread.
THANKYOU set forward FUNK and by extension HIP HOP. I saw the song lipsynched on some teenage pop show one summer, SLY FREDDIE n LARRY on a ferris wheel at the wheel's apex. Ever since I've gravitated to the song's mix of blues and rock for pop music entertainment. Few bands achieve the sound. PRINCE didn't - lacked appropriate bassist. P FUNK didn't - lacked appropriate horn section and drummer. JAMES BROWN didn't - lacked band that was free to play rather than perform.

damn it's crazy to how much sly changed . Im sure sly probably did every drug that was around at that time , especially LSD and cocaine . but it shows what drugs can do to a person after long term use . I had to settle myself down because I was getting out of control and that is very easy to do
I always thought Rose always looked like she was deep in thought whenever I see her sing , she never got out of control she seemed always subdued in her playing ....combined with that wig and a sassy sexy voice ..DAMN !!!

This is on my holy grail session want list, I have a few Sly multis that are fantastic.
Unfortunately, this one powerful lesson in why to stay away from mind-altering drugs. Sly took the funk to a whole other level, and he had it all as an innovator not an imitator - but drugs derailed his career permanently.
This is so cool to see. RIP Cynthia! She told "All the squares to go home!" But, my only question here is, was the beef between the Stone Brothers and Larry Graham that bad to where they couldn't have invited him to this? Literally one of the very last chances for Sly, Fred, Rose, Cynthia, Jerry and Greg to all be together...no Larry? Come on.

I have no idea about the beef between Stone and Graham but various sources say that Larry's ALWAYS been invited. But he always refuses to come. Not sure of the reasons.....
I believe Graham thought he was the group. He wanted to be in the front, so he got that chance with GCS.

I have watched hundreds of these videos where the musicians are listening to their music in the studio and generally its a technical breakdown and break out as they examine the piece. This is the first time I have seen them just jammin out to it. Love this.

Larry Graham's bass is the epicentre of this excellent song: it's outtasite and epitomizes funk beyond the call of duty. The first time I heard this as a teenager on Ghana Broadcasting Corporation Radio, it blew my mind just like the first time I heard Santana and Osibisa on the same radio station.

6:05 Cynthia calls Greg and says something about the tempo and "too fast", and the sound guy points and says "that's the record." Anybody know what they're referring to? I don't hear anything going too fast.
I think the final record might have been a little sped up so she’s expecting it to be a little slower. That’s what I think they did for Everyday People and it’s not unreasonable to think they might’ve done it here too.

OH. MY. GAWD. Just go ahead & release this as it is as a remix single! I was only 5 when this came out but even then it blew my head apart, knew I was gonna be a bass player. And all these years later, turns out there are *2* bass parts!! No wonder! This is brilliant, textbook funk, and so glad to see (most of) the Family together. It's interesting, when one is naturally filled with the funk, even speech has a groove, am just getting off on "GON DO WHAT E DO!"....Just wonderful.
