Yes, I do but ever since you showed the video about texture and clarity. I do the exact same thing. I love that technique! I always use sharping in Lightroom.
Thanks so much for your advise on editing. i have learnt so much from you over the years. I am happy with your longer vidros - I learn more. You are my favourite videos.
I find your videos so useful and inspiring, you deliver tutorials that are so easy to understand, what seems like a minefield in light room and Photoshop you make so easy to understand and follow. I have learnt so much from you and you have enabled me to improve my photography through your excellent tutorials . Thank you .
Fantastic job showing all the steps! You know I've followed you forever but i always learn something new in your videos. I appreciate you doing this for us to learn from you. You are the man Mark!
Excellent video Mark! Like hearing these steps and your reasoning. Don't apologize for past videos - they have all been great and we all learn as we go. Keep them coming😊
I do sharpen but not much. Great video and longer duration welcomed. I don’t believe most viewers would find this too long given the info and techniques provided. Think the vinyl analogy is spot on.
Exactly!!! I use the same analogy vinyl vs digital - some landscape photos can look really "digital" and you can often tell when you have overprocessed your image.
Really excellent video, Mark. I was not familiar with the Orton effect and now I will use it more often. I have followed you for a few years now and I have learned more from you than any other online host.
Great video, Mark! I took those first steps and applied them to one of my more recent favorite photos and wow what a difference! Affinity Photo doesn't have a Texture slider, but I use 2 Unsharp Mask layers - Darken and Lighten blend modes for the fine texture. Seriously, what a difference that made. Happy Holidays, Big Dude!
Just a quick thank you. Your tips and videos have taken my photo editing to a whole new higher level. My photos are starting to show that "Vinyl Soul" Thanks
Another great video, white boarder on the layer unlock the padlock right click add stroke you can pick the colour and boarder size heaps quicker and easier.
great vid, thanks Mark. that was very inspirational, as your routine compliments your shooting style and the end result are fantastic images, for its a wise man who knows what he wants and does not chase after the crowd. Once again Thanks.
Thanks Mark! This video was awesome. I've seen little snippets of some of these tips, but it really helps to see all of them in one video. I really appreciate your UA-cam videos as well as your photography courses!
Another great video! Thanks for the tutorial. I found it very helpful. Don't mind the longer format. I definitely have to get more proficient in Photoshop. I am comfortable in Lightroom but not Photoshop.
As always - a very helpful, video Mark. Thanks for taking the time to go through those techniques. I have always felt that many of my photos end up "too crunchy" and wasn't sure why or how to address it. Now I have a better understanding of what direction to go. thanks again! Doug
Hey Mark, I love your channel I have learnt a great deal from you! A couple of questions though, btw I would love if you did longer videos like this. I think they are great! When you were in PS you skipped over a couple of things like did you merge the layers together? And what do you next? Do you save the file in PS or go back to LR and save the file? Thanks.
An excellent tutorial Mark! I tried those move on one of my images and it really made a difference. In another video I saw it was recommended to reset Clarity to 0 in Lr before exporting it to Ps because the Orton effect already adds lot of softening to the image.
I do wildlife, landscape, forest and fungus photography. My wildlife and fungus photos are definitely sharpened because these photos come to you and I think they need a bit of pop. With my woodscape and especially landscape photos, I tend to keep them soft because these photos draw you in more.
Thanks for this. The chapters are especially helpful: I don't have the best memory and after installing Lumenzia had to go back to your video a few times to get the sequence of keystrokes right for the Orton effect. Luminosity masking should prove helpful!
Just wanted to say I really enjoyed the longer video! I started taking photos only 2 years ago and learning the ins and outs of lightroom has been tricky (haven't dabbled in PS yet but will likely do so now). I plan on keeping this video bookmarked as a reference going forward. Thanks for all the info!
A most excellent tutorial, once again!! I mostly use LRC for my post, but I'm going to try my first Orton Effect in PS now!! I have more questions, but those will be for a different time...
Thanks for another great video Mark. I'll give some of these techniques a try. I also add a border to my finished photos. I have an action set up so I don't have to remember the steps.
Thanks for another great tutorial Mark. I've been using the technique of sharpening texture and softening clarity since you mentioned it in a video some time ago. However, I don't have any set go to values, I just eyeball it and go with what I think looks good. Next step is to get Lumenzia and start playing with the other adjustments you make as well.
I really, really love your teaching style! Thank your, always something new and now, with longer version more personal, thank you again. One question: the best source to download lumenzia for the latest photoshop version? Any tips? Sunny greetings from the Peloponnese:)
Thanks for the video Mark, very helpful. I’ve come to a point as I’ve gained experience with LR and PS where I also - almost always - soften the shot by reducing clarity. Even in my bird and wildlife shots, I commit the sacrilege of taking away some of the sharpness. I think it’s because these modern cameras with high megapixels and tack sharp AF tend to deliver images that are actually sharper than what we see with our naked eyes, a crunchy effect, especially when we employ techniques like focus stacking to get front to back sharpness. At least my eyes are drawn to photos with slightly softer edges. So I’ll keep drawing down the clarity, adding negative dehaze to bright parts and Orton glow to the highlights. Cheers.
Excellent video Mark! I really liked the longer format. It would have been difficult to cover all that info in a more compressed timeframe. I also appreciated you doing two photos - it helped reinforce what you were doing and how it looked. One question, when you add the white border, what does that do when printing the photo? Don’t remove it when printing and let the print processing add the border? Thanks!😊
Yes, depending on the image, but only selectively. I follow a very similar "finishing" process for a softer, more organic appeal... "smooth yet sharp", if that makes sense? Thanks for another helpful and informative video, Mark... well done!
Thanks for the tips Mark, I love the idea of a more soulful image. I have just started applying white borders to my photos, my question is do you apply the white borders in PS before sending to a print lab or do you use the print lab software to apply the white borders? Not sure if it makes a difference...
Hey Mark - if you think that modern lenses make images appear too technical/perfect/sharp, you really ought to try some vintage manual focus lenses. They have character, and different lenses have different characteristics. I use vintage manual focus lenses now more than my AF ones. Bonus is they are cheaper too!
Excellent vid. Still using LR6 & AP-v1. Sometimes I sharpen & sometimes take a pretty good photo & do a little sharpening in LR6, AP or even a little in Topaz SharpenAI. Usually a local sharpen,=for wildlife. I don’t have texture or dehaze but will lower the contrast on some photos.
Great video, Mark. So much helpful information. Would you apply the Orton Effect when using a black mist filter or with a light subject, such as frosty vegetation against a dark background? If so, would you use different settings? Thanks, Mark.
I always enjoy your videos. This was no exception-except that I do not have that plug-in to change the luminance. How can you do that in Photoshop or Lightroom without the plug-in
I do apply output sharpening which will depend on whether it’s for web or print. I use the output sharpening in the TK9 panel which resizes and sharpens for the web. Usually I’ll size to 2048 px for the long edge for web. Then, I’ll apply a mask and brush in or out the parts of the image where I do or don’t want the sharpening applied. Usually foregrounds will get the sharpening and I’ll use a graduated filter to fade the sharpening off into the background. However, I also apply a high pass after I apply an Orton effect in my main workflow before I apply the resize and sharpen for web. However, now I’m starting to wonder whether I should just go with the high pass action and not apply any extra output sharpening when I resize🤷🏻♂️. Any thoughts or feedback from anyone here would be much appreciated! Thanks for another awesome and helpful video Mark!
I used to be obsessed with maximum sharpness and I always wanted to shoot at my lenses sharpest aperture and then I would jack up the clarity and sharpness in post. Now I can't stand that overly sharp and "crunchy" look. There's a good balance of sharpness and smoothness to strike. I find myself actually reducing clarity 99% of the time now and I'm not obsessed with using my lenses sharpest aperture anymore.
Have you ever thought of creating a preset that automatically applies your texture/clarity/dehaze settings on image import, especially since you assign the same values each time?
Thx a lot for sharing your workflow 👌🏻. I've learned a lot from all your videos. For landscape photography I used to sharpen my images, but I always mask something out. Do you not sharpen your images? It would be very interesting to see your workflow for sharpening your digital and print images. Greetings from Germany

Is there a difference in clarity and texture effect if you apply it to 50MP or 100MP image?
It is interesting I have had my GFX camera for about 4 weeks and I noticed I have to edit differently with those files partially because of the beautiful towns and textures that camera gives me I find that I actually don't have to edit this much and I Ve actually had to decrease the clarity and sharpness sometimes such is the sharpness of the lenses. I do think it depends a little bit on what files you are working with as well. I agree I'm not a fan of the overdigital look. But also it is difficult because we want some wow factor to our pics 📸 and customers want that wow factor... And when you are selling landscapes like I do you do need to have a balance between what you like and what your customers like ...tricky
A software specific video... Shame I don't have that stuff. Should have mentioned that the video would be of little or no use for those without that/those packages. It seems none of the different photo processing software packages ever has quite the same effect/impact even if the name on the tool is the same and often uses different names in any case.
✅SURVEY: Do you sharpen your photos?
It depends on the subject and which message I want to share
Yes, I do but ever since you showed the video about texture and clarity. I do the exact same thing. I love that technique!
I always use sharping in Lightroom.
Great to hear you're enjoying that! @@brandonmjohnsonphotography
I often sharpen, Mark, but I don't apply it to sky or water (I use masking to insure that sharpening occurs only where I want it)
Yes, real easy to over do it though.
Mark, I would be more than happy to watch a thirty minute video or longer from you.

Very rarely i sharpen because I'm extremely patient when it comes to focusing, I use a little texture and clarity.
Nice video, but what can I do with the Ortoneffect without luminantia? Has PS a tool foor it?
i meant lumenzia.
The first 5 could be a preset; with slight tweaks of slider if needed.
In Lightroom you had 6 thumbnails on the screen, quite large. How do you get them large ? Mine are always so small. Thank you 😊
I don't have luminosity mask plugins. How can I do the orton effect in photoshop without them and still limit to bright areas?
What if you are going to resize for print, white border before?
NoI don’t add a white border then
Dehaze turns photo bluish.
Would you agree on that car photography can be landscape photography as well?
The amount of images I’ve gone back to re-edit because I way overcooked the clarity back in the day 😂
Hahha! We’ve all been there
Man I REALLLLYYYY need to learn how to use Photoshop... XD
I keep my editing to a minimum. Pretty much only crop, exposure, and saturation.
