I loved the song at the end, thanks for posting it. I remember this song by Brian Protheroe "Every Roman Knows". I took the LP out of the library when I was 16 and the tune just stayed in my head all these years, until I found it on some download site and now it's on my I pod.
Stripey Rambles I'm going to do the same, now that i think of it. Every Roman Knows sounds a lot like a soundtrack clip from a British comedy. Great stuff. Michael Palin does a spoken word bit at the end about Archimedes.
Ha I was only listening to Jake the other day for the first time in years. He was a big favourite of my dads back in the day so grew up listening to Jake. Stripey you’re in for a treat if you if you’ve only just discovered him. I’d recommend his ‘Last will and testament’ album I swear my dad wore that album out. Some of his songs and lyrics are hilarious but so well written and performed the guy was a genius.
One of the best love songs ever written. Congratulations on finding Jake Thackray - you are not alone! Gazz Lad is so right, Jake was a wonderful wordsmith who, as it happens, could also sing the songs he wrote. Sadly he's not around any more, but one of his biggest fans does a pretty good job of singing Jake's songs in his own way, and his name is John Watterson, aka "Fake Thackray". He now tours the country (see www.fakethackray.com/gigs/list/) and there's a special concert coming up at The Sherman Theatre in Cardiff on 14th November. Back in 1973, Jake performed there on the same stage as his own hero French chansonnier Georges Brassens, in a very rare appearance, and now Fake Thackray and some friends will pay tribute to them both in the very same theatre. It will be fantastic!
Wow..jake thackray. I like it. Gonna look for some more of his stuff. How did u find him? He's from my part of the world but never heard of him. Thanks for sharing. 👍
Goodbye Hello was his biggest album, probably his most commercial. You have to check that one out mate!. He said he wanted to do a funky dirty sexy album!. That one was called Greetings From L A . The front cover is a postcard of an aerial view of LA , but it's Dirty Smoggy chimneys , and car fumes at full effect!. On the back is a picture of Tim Buckley with a gas mask on. Stripe I'm not joking mate. that is a fantastic album . The whole tone of it is Sex and funk. A cracking album!. Another good one is Happy Sad. There are others mate. In my eyes they are the best ones!. You should check out Jeff Buckley too mate. Yes his son!. Both died too young rip!. Jeff was unique in his own right. Not as good voice as his farther. I think Jeff only made 2 albums!. You should check out Grace!. Another belting album. I'm as bad as you for rambling about music mate ha ha!. Enjoy mate!.
Brian Protheroe "I/You" album was something I heard while digging through a friend's album collection back in the 80s. I thought it was cool that Ian Anderson played on a couple songs, as well as other Jethro Tull members. My friend said, "if you like that you can have it". So, I took his scratchy album home and enjoyed it for many years. I finally got a 4-disc box set of Brian Protheroe CDs a few years back. Now I'm getting familiar with his other albums. But, "I/You" is still my favorite. Every song a witty, strange, and wonderful gem.
Jake. England's only ever 'chansonnier'. He came in a category all of his own. Scores of great songs, delve in to the less popular ones to find the quality ; - ) e.g. The hair of the widow of Bridlington ua-cam.com/video/geDSL19TXDI/v-deo.html As soon as you're hooked on Jake you're doomed to make a major jump and encounter Jacques Brel! ua-cam.com/video/E4CofooIKHk/v-deo.html
Nice choices. Both were amazing.
Funny.. I've been listening to both these artists on repeat for days now..both remind me of better times. Cheers from Derry City 🎵

I'll check out Brian Protheroe!. I wonder if you have heard stuff by Tim Buckley. He had a great voice. I recommend him.
