I wonder, did you ever try Conan Exiles? People don't usually put that in the RPG category, but I recently started playing in single-player and was really surprised. Besides the building aspect it is a full fledged sandbox RPG. A really good one in my opinion with a cool world to explore. It feels a lot like my modded survival/nofasttravel Skyrim playthroughs at times and I do like the combat a lot.
@@alexutopia it is indeed a really good surprise, but referring to the theme of this video, the main thing if find in Conan Exiles really lacking is a solid combat system. if it have had dragon's dogma combat mechanics, omg i'd play it so much
Dragon's dogma didn't do everything right, but what it did right, it did it masterfully. The gameplay, the bosses, the pawn system, the night cycle. DD2 is gonna be insane.
I personally don't think that we will have a DD2, because recently Capcom closed Dragon's Dogma Online only because they didn't have more content to offer. Edit: Nevermind, DD2 is launching, (on my birthday btw) and I'm happy i was wrong lol. Already pre ordered!
@@VitaKet It is not confirmed to be in development but the creator plans to continue dragon's dogma with a new main entry after other projects have been finished
@@VitaKet the guy who made DMC5 said that he was given the option of making either DD2 or DMCV, which means that DD2 was on the table and since DMCV has been out for a while now, unless capcom has him on something else he's likely working on DD2 now.
So... What about jrpgs? That genre is all console, mostly turn-based. But yeh, the term "role-playing" can apply to a great many things, not just your typical baldurs gate style games.
@@HerrFinsternis I'm not into Jrpgs, and while I enjoy irpgs like BG or Divinity, I really wish there were more Bethesda-like RPGs. Open worlds with a ton of interactibility, preferably improved upon with more interactibility and more depth. And of course, first-third person toggleability and complete character customization to the utmost degree possible. And more RPGs need to go the Dragon Age route with alternate starts, but expanded on even more with more options and not just racial in nature, and more impacts on the narrative.
The meaning of RPG has evolved, it's that simple. Want an example? Prove to me that The Witcher 3 is a better "Role Playing Game" experience than any Fifa or Madden career mode. Tabletop RPG is about playing a role, that's it. There are even tables that go for a more theatrical approach instead of the numbers and stats. So yea, basically in Madden you can create your character, live his life, level up attributes, some even have a dialog system. Some sports games are actually more "RPG" than self entitled RPGs.
@HardWarUK Rather it's the fault of the publishers who want to make everything accessible to the masses. RPG was never that. Even console RPGs are keep being dumbed down for mass market appeal. If a publisher says they make their successful franchise more "inclusive" than you can be sure, they plan to exclude their hardcore fans for the normies.
It's because rpg has evolved into a broad genre. It's a good thing if you ask me. There are plenty of ways to narrow your search like specifying "arpg" "jrpg" "turn based combat" "crpg" "open world", etc. It's really no different to how genres like "first person shooter" or "simulation game" work where the individual games within the net can be radically different
Dragon's Dogma is one of my favorite games. The #1 game that needs a sequel with a higher budget in my opinion. Polish the combat even more (Particularly even more magic and magic mechanics), and give it a Bethesda style world and interactability, with Witcher storyline and world detail / sense of scale. Dragon's Dogma's world suffered due to the lack of funding, I read the Devs wanted to do more but they were at their limits. Limits that could be satisfied with a sequel... Even if it duplicated the existing game and put a whole new game's worth of development to expanding it.
The good news is that the director plans to do a new dragon's dogma in the next few year's once his other projects are done and out of the way. Dragon's dogma was going to get a sequel sooner but he decided to make dmc first as it had been longer since the last game with it than with dd
Dragon's Dogma has a great combat system! I'm glad you bought it up, because it's the _only_ "true" RPG I've seen with a free-flowing combat system. Imagine that kind of combat with the writing of Baldur's gate or Dragon Age Origins.
I loved this game, played it to death. This story doesn't quite hold up as well as Skyrim for multiple playthroughs, but the combat, and skill system, is so much better. And the pawns! Both annoying and hilarious.
That and probably the coolest dragons as normal bosses as well. Talking to you mid fight, casting magic and simply flying up are things that more dragons should do in games. Also the bitterblack boss rush room and the whole dlc in general.
Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning is also criminally underrated. It's almost similar to Dragon's Dogma in some ways, but at it's core plays like what Fable actually should've been. Being able to choose between might, finesse, and sorcery with any combination of two in between, or just doing all three trees at once adds so many layers of customization that I would dare to say rivals Dragon's Dogma's vocations. The mixture of skill trees combined with the fate cards/shifts can make your character feel very personal to you with the fate cards that act as your "class" with their own sets of passive bonuses that compliment your chosen active skills. All of the class combos get upped to the 11 when you decide to build a universalist. (combination of all three trees) Instead of feeling like a jack of all trades, master of none, you're rewarded with a passive making you a master of all martial and magical weapons and more than competent in the three practices, without being completely overpowered. What really hurts the game are inventory glitches, audio/visual bugs, and the game as a whole feeling way too easy, even on the hardest difficulty. Some people would argue that it's too long as well since the core game is actually longer than Skyrim and all it's expansions, but it's an overall satisfying experience.
"Wolves hunt in packs." "Wolves hunt in packs." "Wolves hunt in packs." *sit in Inn. "When doing something, should I speak up when it's important or keep silent?"
You reminded me of a really old game called "Betrayal at Krondor" where the magic system was also stamina-based instead of manna. Another great feature was that once your mage ran out of stamina, you could keep casting but you'd be using your health pool instead.
Lawrence Gillespie that was an amazing and hard game, the first is always going to be the best. The second game was decent enough to play though, totally different game though
Truly, dragon's dogma has the most satisfying combat yet. I think you fell short on this video. There are many underlying gameplay features such as how ogres always go and attack womens first , how hydras can swallow you, how chimeras can pin you and ravage you, how Griffins fall off the sky when you burn them, and so on. The lack of enemy variety is equally balanced with the personality and multiple ways to deal with each one of them. Then you have the synergy with the pawns and how you rise your personal pawn. For fighter pawns is always fun when you grapple hold humanoid enemies and your partners come rushing to deal the final blow. How if you fell off the sky they would catch you and save you an unexpected death, how they restore your stamina. Truly, deciding between an utilitarian or a guardian class pawn, was always a tough choice. The is no other magic system that evokes anime feels (ecsplosion) like dragon's dogma. Im still trying to find a game that can scratch that "classic classes feel" (mage, warrior, priest, etc) that isn't a turn based, top down isometric view, or mmo. Even the story that many people say was boring, has its amazing revelatory moments, sadly getting to those moments are very far and between, fighting the dragon and the following cutscene was an exciting twist, and even more so, the ending of the game is one of the most inconclusive ,yet unique, aspects of the game. To me those 2 plot twists saved the game's story to me. The problem with this game is as you stated, the over world is boring and dead or full of things to kill dead and that's all you'll be doing for the rest of the game. The side quest are mostly fetch one thing, escort someone (which I never did cause I once had the dude that changes your classes die on me and I was stuck), or kill things more dead. To me, not a problem since I enjoy more the combat in games than story, to other, the contrary.
I'll never forget when I fell off a Griffin and my main pawn caught me. Never happened again but that one moment gave me a feeling that no other game has given me since.
Happened to me when I fell of the dragon and my big brawny Pawn caught me followed by “are you alright Master?” I had those little anime hearts in my eyes for him after that. Lol
Personally I liked the escort quests, as it's the ONLY game where I felt a need to begin the quest after a night sleep to give me a whole day to accomplish it, because attempting them during the night was, as would be in 'reality', a fool's errand. And having someone vulnerable in your party for the duration really changed how you fought, or avoided, each combat encounter. You bring up some great points, thanks for taking the time to type all that you did.
@@xxTICxxTOCxx Thanks. And yes that's true! Theres some pre planning about it. In my case, it was bad timing! It was morning and I had progressed the story enough to where the Griffin appears. Of course I didnt know that, and the Griffin landed right on top of the inn guy 🤣🤣😤.
Still one of my favorite games of all time and just for the combat and vocation system. I also shake my head when I walk into an inn and my pawns just start smashing boxes. If I role play it right I feel like a no good gang leader about to give an innkeeper a hard time. Otherwise I feel like the worst parent at the toy store.
"What's this???" as your pawn leaps into the fountain in Gran Soren to get a coin, followed up with, "I'm soaked to the bone!!!" Or the charm of giving all your party pick axes, and waiting in caves after a combat encounter while they mine all the ore... "Come on kids, that's enough, we still have work to do."
DMC5 - I beat this game 3 times already on different difficulties and yet I still can't quit! It's simply routine - get back from work, have dinner, change clothes, pray, DMC5 perfect judgement cut the whole mission for hyping and then go play what I play currently.
I played K of A: R again in 2017 and noticed something: ESO, the Elder Scrolls MMORPG has a LOT of similar mechanics. The use of crystals to strengthen wpns & armor was the first thing to catch my eye. Anybody else?
DD did something that no one does right: night time! Every day you have to plan out your travel to the location for the quest while also worring about getting back before night time. The idea of planning your expedition and having to worry about the day cycle is something no many games do.
Ive never played other rpg where I found myself replaying the game 3 times immediately after completing it for the first time, easily 200 hours in, dd is te only game that I played without wanting to stop, unfortunately I'll have to when collage starts. All 9 vocations are different enough and the game has over 100 special attacks, the combat mechanics are extremely complex, there are many playstyles, great loot and enemies to the point where the game just cant get boring. So idk what are you talking about.
It is really a shame. Spears are soo underrepresent in most RPGs. Even in great Games like Divinity 2 a spear is just another two handed just like your Zweihander.
@@paulpaulmann8873 Seriously! I know of two games that have spears used like spears! Two!! Dark Souls and Morrowind! WHY are spears so absent in games?!
@@paulpaulmann8873 I never understood this! Spears have been the most dominant weapon throughout the history of mankind and they are awesome. How come they are so under represented in games? It's sincerely something I enjoy once I play a game with spears. In the end, I guess in the eye of western pop culture, a spear is not a noble weapon. Just a pointy stick.
@@utisti4976 mount and blade, chivalry, mordhau etc. all use spears and when actual fighting style of spears is a concern to you those are far better representations than morrowind or even dark souls
LOL I'm such a fanboy when it comes to this game I have over 3k hours in it, and btw it's nice to see someone else playing a Warrior. Some of the things you can do in this game that are never listed but are absolutely a blast such as if you play Strider and have the skill Mad Dash you use it as you approach an enemy you hit heavy attack your character does a slide tackle and upends the enemy or how if you use Soaring Stone and have a Ranger pawn that has a high inclination to Utilitarian and they will pick the enemy off in mid-air. But the best thing about this game hands down is Boarball. :D
What I want most from another Dragons Dogma! -coop (so I can adventure with a couple of friends or assist new players needing help) -more verity in magic! -make two handed more useful ( it felt underwhelming compared to other classes) -more enemy verity -survival mode making you have to eat and drink as a difficulty with harder enemies What do you wan to see brought into a new dragons dogma?
I'm a massive fan of Dogma. Less a fan of the souls series but i think it's hard to compared these games in 'difficulty'. Maybe i find dogma a cakewalk because i understand the mechanics, want to grow stronger & can carry 1 million curatives on a well customized party. Demon souls was great but after Dogma came out i immediately lost interest in the 'souls genre'.
I tried dragons dogma and i was very excited to start an rpg i thought i would become obsessed with, but i played a couple hours and got to the the first city/town and couldn't figure out where to go or what to do, so i figured I needed to backtrack because i had missed something but I kept dying to mobs everywhere I went, unable to make it anywhere, so i was completely stuck. I dont like to look at guides, I prefer figuring out games by myself, so it really turned me off to it
@@alexandermilewski7850 The start of the game isn't well explained and it can be easy to miss an important side-quest almost at the start of the game. I'd really recommend checking out a guide like the one on steam, even if only to avoid missing critical quests (looking at you, Quina!!) that impact later areas of the game.
Same here XDD I fell down during a portion in the sewers on Bitterblack and ran into Death with my lantern out cause wet. For me, that was the most fearful moment I'll never forget (being I don't play horror games) with the 2nd one being the first time I ran into that stupid wyrm in the south.
DD would have been an absolute masterpiece with a better open world, maybe also expanding more on the concept of bitterblack isle. Still fantastic game though, spent hundreds of hours playing it
Hell yea, the sorceror spells make you feel like you came really far, like you progressed throughtout the game. From simple fire spells to straight up Armageddon meteors. Hella lit.
I thought to myself “Dragon’s Dogma” as soon as the video started. Couldn’t agree with you more! I absolutely love this game and still revisit it every few months.
Anyone who loves rpg's (an hopefully the jrpg) as much as the wife and I do deserves our sub :). Very glad a friend of ours told us about the channel :)
One of the best single player RPG games ever hands down. Great video btw, started following you cuz I just purchased a copy of Outward and your channel is the one with the best gaming tips 😂 Keep up the good work mate, I like your style. Keep fresh and interesting. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
"There is a high chance that an identical combat system just wouldn't work in an open world RPG" Funny that this video was recomended to me just now with Elden Ring almost coming out
I did the same thing, man. For several hours on many different characters. But then I started roleplaying as Guts from Berserk, and then the game just clicked for me. So good.
Dragon's dogma is my second favorite RPG franchise of all time, just a tiny bit below the souls games, and even in that regard there are features in dragon's dogma that are better than the souls games. Few games made me so obsessed with them to the point of not being able to sleep, this is one of them. People put famous RPGs in a pedestal like the witcher and Skyrim, but neither of those can even touch this gem in terms of combat gameplay
The 4 best combat systems in rpgs for me are: Kingdom of Amalur, Kingdom Come Deliverance, Dragons Dogma and The Witcher 3. Just based on my enjoyment of the combat.
Bruh, why I never heard this game?! That combat mechanic is what I am looking for! I agree, every action RPG I knew has boring combat, which is only slashing or shooting. So it negates the feeling of fighting the big enemies (it's weird that I can take down a giant by hitting his legs, lol). But looking at this clip, damn, we can climb the big enemies? The long sword launch them? And a fricking tornado spell? Bruh!
Imo Dragon's Dogma and Kingdoms of Amalur are two sides of stream-lining in RPG combat system. Amalur gave you all the freedom you want, and in turn it became boring at a point. While in Dragon's Dogma a lot of things are locked behind your play-style by choice and grinding, making the whole thing more cohesive.
the big problem with amalaur was the forced developing stop before polishing the game, because hurr durr must sell, whant money shit from publisher EA, and in the end the game was released completely unbalanced. but it's still a beatiful game. that could have been much better.
one open world action rpg I've found recently that has attained a nice balance between RPG and action is Ashen. It rewards exploring the open world with items that increase our stats as well as the rare and unique items. Think of it like the spirit items in Breath of the Wild. But quests reward better stat increases and additional gameplay mechanics. It also seems like it's taken the dark souls action dungeon crawl format and manage to apply it well into an open world.
Yes I loved that game. It's light in the implementation of souls mechanics, and offers a far more cheerful atmosphere along with it. "Dark souls - the light-hearted edition" so to speak :) And I liked the companions, the simple yet effective approach to them. They kick ass and all you have to wonder about is whether to bring one of the waifu's or stache-bro. There's an expansion now
@@7dayspking throughout the action you help npcs with their own personal questlines, while completing your own and exploring the lands. Progressing quests rewards you with gear options, expands the hub and of course offers tidbits of lore. It's the kind of game you can play for half an hour and feel like you've done something, and then find yourself playing it all day. It's on console now too.
@@7dayspking dark souls has something like it, but also more lore hidden throughout the game which gets that whole investigation thing going you eluded to in that other conversation (still have to respond to that, you said some interesting things there). An action adventure with stats would describe Ashen better because it doesn't really have that, it's a ridealong. Still a good experience.
@@7dayspking which is why we started using the term action-adventure, to describe games like tomb raider and indeed Ashen and to distinguish their genre from the adventure games from the 80s and 90s as well as the full on action games of that era. The differences between a gabriel knight, a tomb raider and a double dragon should be obvious. They all have a story of sorts, yet your involvement is implemented quite differently in all of em.
@@7dayspking 7dayspking myst, monkey island, the longest journey are all very different from each other too, yet we call them all adventure games. Should we chop that up into sub genres? And I didn't mean to imply that the term action-adventure was invented because of tomb raider itself, it was just an example of a game who's genre I thought we wouldn't be debating, that's why I used it. Because it's becoming a bit tiresome to talk about this with you. You find fault with everything. I take things too broad, too narrow, incorrect alltogether etc. It's not a conversation when one of the parties involved is so rigidly holding their oen definitions. Things change and (d)evolve. Over time genres change in their implementation. Get used to it. So here it is, Ashen is a cool game just like the OP said. We both enjoyed it a lot, we suspect others might too. I don't know how to tag it and I don't care. And why should I, it doesn't change anything about the game.
The sequel has the potential to be the best game ever. There I said it, take that Elden Ring. Regarding open world rpgs, this has the best combat out there. Regarding any kind of rpg, Nioh is right up there.
I've reinstalled DD. My Arisen and pawn are min-maxing Assassin & Sorcerer respectively at level 100. I just have to hand over wake stones, finish game & remember not to level up in the wrong class while I'm grinding classes between levels in my next playthrough. LIQUID VIM FTW!
@@Hawky2947 which with hindsight, it's kind of doom from thee start - modder basically have unlimited time and resources (given time and interest), a game company will never be able to compete with them on the sheer quality and bigger DLC levell project is probably too expensive
Shadow of War has: - Parameters, like HP, Damage, Defense, etc. You can uprade them. - It has loot that changes the character's parameters, they can also change the way you play, like giving you passives etc - It has elemental damage and states, like fire and burning, ice and frozen, etc - The Orc system, that uses everything I said and some other things I mean. Of course Shadow of war is a RPG. It has multiple rpg elements, even The Division 2 is a rpg. In both games you spend hours making builds, learning all the math and numbers. You role play in those games for sure.
I love dragons dogma want a sequel real bad but i get bugged pawns that dont do a damn thing....but when it comes together. Some of the best gaming ive done
Well they did make a Dragons Dogma sequel of sorts. It was an MMO but it was only for Japan and never shipped anywhere else. I think the problem with the overworld was you spent a ton of traveling back and forth by foot with no fast travel or mounts. They tried to incorporate marker stones and teleport stones to help alleviate this a bit but, more often than not you spent long periods of time traveling to a point, exploring a dungeon and then having to trek all the way back to your quest giver (when you are low on healing supplies due to dungeon delving) and usually at night when the tougher enemies are about almost ensuring your death at beginning levels. SPOILER: Fun note, if you ever complete the play through and make your way all the way down to the bottom of that giant fissure that opens up at the end to fight the Seneschal(the true final boss) your character becomes the new Seneschal. Use the knife to commit suicide and play through again, the Seneschal you fight will be the last character you created voiced and with your vocation and abilities you had in the previous playthrough. I thought that was a pretty neat gimmick.
This game was great. It brought me back to a place know other game has. I felt like dungeon & Dragons opened up and teleported me through a moon gate, a place only few can understand. Lord British is here somewhere and the virtues to be found. I can feel it nearby.
@@KubinWielki I couldnt play Two Worlds 2....besides its terrible FPS and crashing issues on my PC, the weapon swapping threw me for such a loop. When it takes as many if not more steps to swap weapons in a game as it does to bake a cake in real life, there are issues, lots and lots of issues.
Strong feeling that DD2 is in the works for next gen, also given that this game was unfinished it's amazing what Itsuno and his team were able to accomplish. With a more lenient dev cycle and creative freedom, DD2, especially with what it's online spinoff did, might end up being one of the best action rpgs.
There is a mod you can download to give your fighter the forward roll from the assassin (dagger) class and once you realize how to do it, you can replace any skill pretty much from any class with it, effectively giving you a dodge roll on all builds which makes the combat fucking perfect. Especially making bbi way more fun as it looks like they took inspiration from the souls series for the dlc. Also on a side note, souls combat is so much fun i think because it uses subliminal musical timing, and once you click with it, it becomes addictive as hell like playing the drums or any instrument for that matter.
you nailed it about the open world part, more towns if necessary, DD sorely needed that, more people but not necessarily more delivery quests, but maybe some escorts quests for caravans here and there, but that would mean your pawns have to have dialogue along the way or mid camp probably.
hey, just for anyone who didn't know, There's a anime coming out for dragons dogma, and they are currently working on a Dragons dogma 2. Apparently Its Currently under the name of Project Bella and is a soft reboot with a different canon or story. this was a leak And idk how real its gonna be. But with the anime coming out soon it seems plausible.
This game was SO poorly received when it launched. Capcom made a rpg masterpiece & the regular 'games journalists' threw this in the trash while praising Ubisoft, bioware, etc's bland trash that may have started this vidja dark age. Looking forward to any content related to DD. I've reinstalled the game.
Dragon's Dogma had become popular enough in Japan to spawn an MMO back in 2015. It has sadly ended service fairly recently this year, but for an MMO of what was a cult classic, that's a rather impressive lifetime in of itself. Having played myself, it was pretty damn good, and largely improved upon the formula by specializing existing vocations in creative ways as well as creating new ones. For example, certain techniques such as Scarlet Kisses and Gouge became built-in to vocations movesets. At the same time, the Archer became its own independent class, while the Strider became a class focused on hit-n-run tactics and latching onto monsters with a grappling hook. They also had new classes like the Tank classes: the Shield Sage, who blocked attacks, and the Alchemist, who in a fun twist is an dodging-based tank (also my fav class). Frankly, the real thing holding it back was the size of the storage box, which was limited behind a premium subscription system, and having your stats ENTIRELY dependent on your equipment tiers. And for a game where the fun is in wearing that monster's ass as a hat, this really put a damper on the experience. If they were to take out the item storage limit alone, it would basically be how I'd imagine a Dragon's Dogma sequel would be like!
The idea that Capcom left the game hanging doesn't even hold up much because they did make a sequel... They made a bloody MMO Version of the game that never released outside of Japan. We can only hope the Dragon's Dogma Netflix series is an indication there is still interest in the IP.
Dragon's Dogma I played to death. So many little things to learn like how to get an ogre to knock it's own helmet off. Or how to make certain enemies roll on the ground and take more damage from it. Or how 2 very specific enemies can kill themselves if you lure them off high places because one enemy is stupid and the other is technically blind. Or how a chimera immediately knows when you are casting Exequy as it can cast that spell too, and it freaks out and goes berserk while other enemies have no clue and ignore it.
Honesty, Darkfall and Darkfall Unholy Wars had incredible dynamic action combat ! It was both PvP and PvE and the movement and camera were very immersive. Many other games also use a somewhat "first-person"-like aiming system (it can be over-the-shoulder aka third-person), but with melee weapons and magic. For example, I wish Outward had not used a lock system (albeit soft and optional) and instead used a simple facing with mouse/controller stick instead. Since you move with WASD in Outward, they added a soft-lock system, but a simple mouse/stick directional would have solved the "need" for damned lock targeting. An alternative is the system used in ESO (Elder Scrolls ONLINE) where you can use WASD to move, but you aim freely with your mouse (along with other options). I feel ALL games today should do away with lock targeting or tab targeting. You can add a bit of soft assistance to help controllers.
I remember loving this game. I played years ago on the 360. I played to the end. What really, really, really annoyed me though. There was no fast travel. I remember you get like a gem or something that you can teleport back to, but it was extremely annoying to get back and forth to places you'd already been.
Yeah. You are supposed to place these crystals at key locations so you get around vr easy at later points. But at the first playthrough you have no idea where good placement points are. I would still say that it's better than skyrims menu jumping.
I love dragon's dogma dark arisen. I got an lv 130ist character, max out all classes on my character and my pawn, over a million in gold and rift crystals, got all skills and possible all feats, and still haven't beaten the game fully. the main story for me is almost one-shot of all bosses. bitterblack isle is no joke. my main problem is I almost never find a half-way decent pawn. my current pawn setup is a mage with legions mite, immunity too most/all important status effects, high anodyne, and high halidom. of course, I could switch my pawn to a sorcerer with a staff with over 1200 attack, high voidspell, high bolide, high seism, high gicel, high maelstrom, high ingle, high frigor, plus with the immunities I said earlier.
[Dodge Rolling Everything] "DaRk SoUlS iS bEsT cOmBaT!" Early Vindictus, before it devolved into another fucking weebfest, now *that* was a good combat system.
Yea, it was a slower and had/has lot of variation of hack n slash moves and had little "sandbox" style to it like grabing mobs, hooking Bosses with chains.. I think Crimson Desert's combat will be similar, not too similar but nearly. And it's not an MMO anymore it will be Singleplayer/coop I get it "Dodge Rolling Everything" is bad, but i like the Witcher 3 take on it with the "half spin" or the long dodge, or deflect/parry, but you had to know which to use on which encounter
If there's something I noticed about DD, it wasn't just the combat system. It was the running. You know if the running feels good, it's gonna be a good game. I remember playing the first demo that came out during the PS3 era. I played the shit outta that demo from morning to night. I just couldn't stop fighting that griffon. Each playthrough was a different take on the monster. Then the physics, climbing, combat, and pawns all just melted nicely into a seemingly endless immersive experience. DD is in its own category.
Darksouls combat is trashgarbadge. I said it. It's only hard because they purposely design it to be obtuse and awkward. Kind of like the first Resident Evil games being scary because of the sense of helplessness that comes from the awful controls.
I love this game so much I bought it on every system I own, both Dragon's Dogma and the Dark Arisen version on PS3, then again on PC, then again on PS4, then again on the Switch. I just can't help myself. It's not perfect by any means, as most everyone here seems to agree, but it's definitely one of my favourite games of all time. My two favourite classes are the Assassin and the Magick Archer - I just love using the skills they have.
There technically is a kind of sequel but its only available in Japan, Dragon's Dogma Online. It allowed up to 8 player co-op and added some new mechanics to the climbing system.
I love the game because it doesn't include the little anoying numbers poping to indicate damage, only a very discreet little bar, the characters actually run, climb and jump without looking in slow motion. And I love the pawns.
I tried playing HZD and I dropped it instantly. I tried Witcher 3, and I never felt the itch to go back to the game (I dropped it as well). Dragon's Dogma however, there's something about the game that keeps me coming back to it. I can't really pinpoint exactly why at first, but now I realize it's the combat system. Truly the best combat system for an RPG. Coming from Monster Hunter franchise, I really appreciate games that have combat system/mechanics that comes with consequences in your actions
For the sequel we defenetly need the ability to equip more than 3 skills per weapon, if you want to be a pure swordsman as a fighter you shud be able to equip 6 sword skills and no shield if you want. Having multiple weapon options within the same class will make it much more interesting, a warrior with a 2 handed spear ore a halberd will play very diferent than one with a grate sword, ore a mistic knight with a spell sword and no magic shield, what about a ranger with a crosbow that has less range and rate of fire but with more damage in close distances. Adding that to a coop multiplayer would be a drem come true.
I realy liked the combat system in jedi fallen order , dodge , parrying and force. And i liked the simplicity, no loot, no craft, just action. I realy want to find and other like this one, but i havent yet, if some knows one with a realy good combat system, let me know :)
It also has the best archery in any action rpg. I know cause its the first thing i go to in action rpgs. If anyone disagrees, lmk cause im always looking for good action rpg archery.
Imagine an fantasy RPG with a vastly open and intriguing world and majestic atmosphere and music of Skyrim, a combat system of Dark Messiah or Dishonored series and the questing and story depth found in Obsidian games, it would probably be the one of the greatest action RPGs ever made, alas I can only hope.
Edit: Damn, I just watched this video again after so many years. I sounded awful, lmao. But anyway, Dragon Dogma 2 hype, baby!!!

Dragon's dogma didn't do everything right, but what it did right, it did it masterfully. The gameplay, the bosses, the pawn system, the night cycle. DD2 is gonna be insane.
Is DD2 CONFIRMED?!
I personally don't think that we will have a DD2, because recently Capcom closed Dragon's Dogma Online only because they didn't have more content to offer.

I really hate how "RPG" is almost a completely useless tag for searching for games you want to play.

Exactly. I feel like the game only under-performed due to the lack of marketing. Even to this day many people haven’t heard of it
Take dragon's dogma and put it into a steampunk universe...
I would easily take a 25% reduction in magic strength for a shorter casting time on the stronger spells. They were like 5 - 7 seconds long per cast...

Both annoying and hilarious.
oh yeah, and the sandboxy openworldness of Skyrim
I disagree. The new game plus feature and the online boss makes it worth multiple playthroughs. Plus all the armor, weapon, and class experimentation.
@@professorhawk9070 I agree with you, Dragon's Dogma is the only RPG that i finished 11 times, only because of his new game plus system.
Nioh is better
Can we appreciate though just how Dragons Dogma had the best intellectual dragon in any media?
When i played Dragons' dogma by the first time, i thought "imagine that battle mechanics and monsters inside a game like skyrim"!

Dragon's Dogma is a diamond in the rough, it is one of my top open world rpg's for the combat alone
Happened to me when I fell of the dragon and my big brawny Pawn caught me followed by “are you alright Master?”
I had those little anime hearts in my eyes for him after that.
I think in theory, that if you set your pawns inclination to Guardian and Utilitarian, the pawn saving you event could happen more often.
Dragons dogma is so underrated, wish it was longer though, I've played it to death.

@@alexandermilewski7850 The start of the game isn't well explained and it can be easy to miss an important side-quest almost at the start of the game.

"Dark souls - the light-hearted edition" so to speak :)

@@7dayspking which is why we started using the term action-adventure, to describe games like tomb raider and indeed Ashen and to distinguish their genre from the adventure games from the 80s and 90s as well as the full on action games of that era.

Yea, I did a video about it as well. Check it out: ua-cam.com/video/7HGfFw3X7ts/v-deo.html
That I agree on. The best magic system, attached to one of the worst games overall :D
@@KubinWielki lol
@@KubinWielki I couldnt play Two Worlds 2....besides its terrible FPS and crashing issues on my PC, the weapon swapping threw me for such a loop. When it takes as many if not more steps to swap weapons in a game as it does to bake a cake in real life, there are issues, lots and lots of issues.
Worst game ever in my opinion
Strong feeling that DD2 is in the works for next gen, also given that this game was unfinished it's amazing what Itsuno and his team were able to accomplish. With a more lenient dev cycle and creative freedom, DD2, especially with what it's online spinoff did, might end up being one of the best action rpgs.
I love having companions in my action rpgs
0:43 "There's a high chance the same combat system just would not work so well in an open world RPG" Well that aged like milk.
THE WIND IS PUSHING MEEEE
There is a mod you can download to give your fighter the forward roll from the assassin (dagger) class and once you realize how to do it, you can replace any skill pretty much from any class with it, effectively giving you a dodge roll on all builds which makes the combat fucking perfect. Especially making bbi way more fun as it looks like they took inspiration from the souls series for the dlc.
Also on a side note, souls combat is so much fun i think because it uses subliminal musical timing, and once you click with it, it becomes addictive as hell like playing the drums or any instrument for that matter.
I have to admit I'm the type who can tolerate a weaker fighting system. When RPG and story elements are satisfying.
Ya, story got a lot of criticism, but I didn’t hate it. There were a few Moments with some Japanese weirdness, but I always found it charming. Lol
you nailed it about the open world part, more towns if necessary, DD sorely needed that, more people but not necessarily more delivery quests, but maybe some escorts quests for caravans here and there, but that would mean your pawns have to have dialogue along the way or mid camp probably.
Dragon's Dogma, Souls Series and Bloodborne.
hey, just for anyone who didn't know, There's a anime coming out for dragons dogma, and they are currently working on a Dragons dogma 2.
I think it was game informer that described this game as just another RPG with dragon in the title.
Titles like 'bound by flame' got better treatment. Lol
Dogma got written off as a skyrim/souls wannabe. And everyone went back to dmc/monster hunter
@@CanadianBlaze137 to be fair monster hunter world is amazing
"Wolves hunt in packs."
My response to this was always "So do we."
The idea that Capcom left the game hanging doesn't even hold up much because they did make a sequel... They made a bloody MMO Version of the game that never released outside of Japan.
We can only hope the Dragon's Dogma Netflix series is an indication there is still interest in the IP.
"Soaked to the bone!"
Noone talks about the true champion, M&M: Dark Messiah. :meh:
I would consider it more of an pure action game.
*Low Key* i enjoyed Witcher 3 combat
I did too, specially on hardest difficulty
Same! But I hate the combat rolls for the obvious reason
Skyrim sells nevertheless
[Dodge Rolling Everything]
"DaRk SoUlS iS bEsT cOmBaT!"
Early Vindictus, before it devolved into another fucking weebfest, now *that* was a good combat system.
Yea, it was a slower and had/has lot of variation of hack n slash moves and had little "sandbox" style to it like grabing mobs, hooking Bosses with chains.. I think Crimson Desert's combat will be similar, not too similar but nearly. And it's not an MMO anymore it will be Singleplayer/coop
I get it "Dodge Rolling Everything" is bad, but i like the Witcher 3 take on it with the "half spin" or the long dodge, or deflect/parry, but you had to know which to use on which encounter
There is a lot more to the combat in the Souls series other than it being hard.
I have had Dragons Dogma for my old Ps3 for about two years I think you have just inspired me to play it.Thanks.
Watching this 3 years later and thinking.... Elden Ring and Dragons Dogma 2 reveal - love your videos by the way, keep it up
For the sequel we defenetly need the ability to equip more than 3 skills per weapon, if you want to be a pure swordsman as a fighter you shud be able to equip 6 sword skills and no shield if you want.
Adding that to a coop multiplayer would be a drem come true.
i would love a sequel to this with harder combat (more enemies onscreen) and it being more dangerous and more unique night enemies. Great great game
I'm happy to see anyone whatsoever give this game attention. The more it get the more likely we will get dd2.
I miss dragons dogma it desperately needs a sequel... I’d think I cry if we just got this game with updated graphics 200hrs in 100% no regrets
