  • “i divulged my spirit more apparently. invoking my once sleeping powers. i conjured a scythe. to her shock. i spilt her blood with it. shattering the mirror which she had gazed into. i watched her as she clung to her wound in horror. her eyes bore tears of blood. ablaze with the fire that would annihilate a lavish evil. the contrast in her now truly sapphire eyes. was everything. within moments. her floor was stained.
to be freed. i needed her to become privy to her aspect. in the midst of her work. the laceration was a curse. an element of the spell. every jeer was a red herring. every taunt was in sadistic satisfaction. she stumbled blindly into the empty town. curiously. i could feel her angst. more strongly than ever. under the great blue sky. beside the silent homes. and now. the wilting flora faded into useless carcasses. shadows began to fade. her angst became despair.
believing i was free yet. she raced miserably to the house of mirrors. where i would soon reveal myself. her blood would bear my autonomy. like a dying mother in labour.
she had carried the scythe with her. a perverse cross. into a windowless belfry. a monument to enterprise. a fitting death. to our symbiosis. she entered to find an empty. ashen room. a lone radiance cascaded. onto a mysterious device. a sinister luster emanated from its mechanical reflections. as envisioned. she called out for answers. the subsequent roar and clamor of the contraption. vaporized the far wall of the room. into a fine dust. the mare lay bewildered and overpowered. it was not insignificant. the time she took to be back on her hooves.”

    06. Bass Cannon
    "Letting Go"
Brohoof comes off as more of discovering what it means, and Bass Cannon is just going off the rails and finally just not caring (in a good way). The Half-Life sound effects really help give me this impression.
I also like to imagine that Vylet (character) is daydreaming about all this and that's how Vinyl Scratch is there.

I remember listening to My Little Pony electronic music in an afterschool science class back in 2011, when I would have been 15 years old. I'm 27 now and listening to this almost brings tears to my eyes. The scene has developed so much. It's got to the point where this isn't even fanwork any more (not that being fanwork makes something a lesser form of art), it's just straight up good electronic music.

Glad to see this one's been posted, been waiting to gush about this since release. I don't think anyones ever gonna read this but I like this song a lot and feel like it deserves more than a small "good song" comment
IMO this is the best song off the album, no question. I dunno what it is, but Bass Cannon just hits/sounds different compared to everything else on Carousel. Bass Cannon gives off heavy Fellow Feeling vibes. You've got "harsh"/aggressive electronic music clashing against a soft piano + acapella, where it feels like the two are wrestling over who "dominates" the main sound. The soft piano + acapella are always plodding along at a constant elegant pace, while the "harsh" music feels as if its struggling to fully play itself out. It gets caught on specific sounds in the same way a game repeats audio when it freezes. I don't want "it sounds like Fellow Feeling" to sound like I'm calling this a derivative piece though. Bass Cannon feels very distinct, and in my opinion could serve as a better attempt at what Porter was trying to portray in his song.
Right off the bat the source engine sampling hits you with this really unique sound that "pulls you in" to the song. The transition into the main portion of the song is great too. You have these melancholic synths plodding along before the alarm spins up and the synths start blaring. That sense of the alarms going off helps incite this idea that the songs burst out of containment and is going wild. I also always like to picture a carousel spinning really fast during the high action bits of this song.
Afterwards the song has this whiplash moment where you're presented with a soft piano + the acapella. As with most of Carousel, the lyrics here have this really cryptic feel to them. Outside of the main concept/story of Carousel, I've got no clue what the lyrics are talking about here. But I'm a fan of it. You get to pull your own interpretations and meaning out of the song, and slot whatever narratives you want into it.
The whole time the instrumental and acapella are kinda playing off of each other. Like obviously all songs do this, but its really noticeable here. Take 1:38 to 2:00 for example, where the synths "wrap" themselves around the acapella lines, spouting out these electronic bursts before shutting off to let the acapella put out a word or two. Only later (1:55), after the full verse is finished the two blend together and "sync up". The synths continue to play out as the acapella begins to distort, until we're hit with the Cutiemarks sample. Yet those synths are still playing quietly underneath, and the sample suddenly gets "overwritten" by the Creekflow noise. Anyone who's been listening to Cutiemarks in the past gets this bait and switch moment where things start feel kinda wrong.
We hear Jesse's voice off in the distance before the synths rush in and control the song for a 40 second stretch of time. The illusion of "depth"/distance that Jesse's voice gives off this idea that we're now in this large, open, dark place where the synths are chugging away. Once the segments over everything just kinda fades out, and the piano begins to plod back in as the acapella takes over again. I always get this feeling that dawns just broke, with the piano representing the warmth you feel when the sun creeps over the horizon. We get some more cryptic lyrics, before leaving off with branching lyrics. If you didn't know, the lyrics listed state that the verse can end with either:
"In your stead!" (or) "and you're dead!"
Its a really neat concept that I'd like to see in more songs.
The synths being to build up as alarm goes off one final time and we hit the climax of the song. This time though the acapella plays through the synths, and paints this idea of some sort of duel taking place. I love the moment at 4:20, where theres the synths being to "rev up" before playing the song out.
Theres some final stuff that I wanted to bring up. I kinda skimmed past Jesse's part in this cause I wasn't sure how to cover it, but I love the inclusion. The song "blends" with itself really well. Each portion of Bass Cannon is distinct but they all transition well into each other, and I found myself just letting the song playout as I skipped through it while writing this piece. The little sound at the end that serves to bridge Bass Cannon into Crush Kill Destroy Swag is great. I love songs that bridge into each other, especially when they randomly get placed next to each other in a shuffled playlist.

i also interpret that last vocal bit as a duel! i really think that it's the beautiful sapphire centerpiece of this album (even with the sprawling proggy masterpieces to come), and it's so thrilling to hear every time! idk if anyone else hears it this way but also i kind of liken Jesse's part in this song to what DJ Drama played throughout Call Me If You Get Lost, like a hyped up and oblivious MC to the proceedings of heartache and conflict and struggles surrounding him.
also really love your interpretation of the interruption of the Cutiemarks "sing a song about life" sample creating a sense of "wrongness" to the song, and i think something that adds to it is that the first couple of brostep drops sound...kind of off and corrupted? the first kind of collapses into itself when Jesse shouts "BASS CANNON!" and the drums are off-kilter throughout, and the second sounds like it glitches out after 15 bars instead of the traditional 16 before the song resumes with the ornate piano-backed verses. it's only after the duet with herself and the synths revving up that we finally get a traditionally structured (though highly complex sound-design wise) brostep drop and it's the most triumphant thing i've heard in the genre after like over a decade of listening to it lol
