It seemed that just after the start on your way to #1 , you got on that logging track and bought it was the road to the west of #4, but then you kept going south...you also may not have noticed that to be on the nearly correct route that you should have been experiencing a lot of climbing towards a plateau. Your general direction should have had you going due west from the start. Oddly at 6:35 you are on another very distinct logging track. The map makers seemed to have not done their due diligence in verifying and incorporating these obvious features.
After checking the Livelox www.livelox.com/Viewer/56-Kainuun-Rastiviikko-30-6-5-7-2024-2-osakilpailu/H35A?classId=798878&tab=player , there seems to be a yellow line near control 1 (where I am at 6:35) indicating the path. That was very difficult to see while running so I had to stop and review where I have been and what I see. My original plan was to lean left from the start and attack from the path left of control 1 but I lost focus and was following re-entrants too far and was unsure of how far. I think the left route choice would have been pretty fast with good execution. My execution was 2 min 41 seconds slower than the fastest on this first leg.
@@Gaiaspiker I think I also saw strange yellow lines that initially appeared to be index contours...how confusing that must have been...I dont know all of the IOF mapmaker symbols...but I am sure paths, tracks, vehicle routes and even rides are supposed to be black...I still have not had any luck making the quickroute map...its not been very quick!! 😏
Why didn't you use your compass a lot more?
I agree with you. What’s funny is a reply I read to a reddit post from someone asking about compass use in orienteering , the person said they are almost never used. People that follow that premise clearly have never been in areas with features so dense, or inversely, sparse and indistinct, that parallel errors happen often.
Good point. I did have a thumb compass oriented towards the control. I wanted to have a clear (simplified) picture of the terrain in my head and avoid unnecessary climbing but grasping the contours was very difficult during the race. No index countours. Maybe I should have just gone straight using compass.
