This is really sad. Love triangle in those kind of stories always lead to frustration. Thankfully, in this one, it's one of the few manga/anime where the triangle is actually interesting and not just a "hmmm which one do I love more ? Her or her ?" story. From the get go, Haruo is in love with Akira. He doesn't know it yet, but at 0 moment he has even half the connection and bond with Hidaka that he share with Ono. The triangle is here to give a new purpose to the medium of video games. It becomes a way to express yourself, to express your desires, your feelings. And this triangle serve that purpose, Hidaka fights Haruo to force him to acknowledge her passion for him. Haruo fights Ono to prove her that he's worthy of being alongside her (also tried in a different way, by trying to get accepted into her high school, but failed, because he's always behind her in everything), Hidaka and Ono fight against each other to prove that they're the one who loves Haruo the most. The triangle is there for that reason, to let the medium be the expression of those teenagers' feeling. Because of that, it's a bit easier to accept that Hidaka gets her heart broken. But it's still so god damn sad. Oh well, at least, for once in an anime love triangle, the protag ends with the childhood friend that was in love with him first.
I wanted a show where the childhood friend ends up with the MC since that's not usually how it goes in other shows. But man, not like this. NOT LIKE THIS.
Nah, i found Hidaka's presence pointless other than to just break the viewers hearts. Hidaka had more chemistry in a way; for one she actually spoke, and two the way she fell in love was more organic. It was the streotypical self-insert anime loser-protagonist who acts completely oblivious to the girls around him, it was frusturating and Hidaka deserved better. I couldn't grow to like Ono because she just didn't talk, she acted like a toddler, it was weird, sure I did feel bad for her because of the abuse she endured at home but she was just such a boring character who felt more like a sassy pet than an actual love interest.

But I feel like Akira and Haruo’s relationship foundation is kind of weak. The only thing binding it together is their love of gaming, and the fact that they somewhat rely on each other. Now, the Yaguchi and Akira ship does have some great things that Hidaka and Yaguchi don’t have. Like they have great natural chemistry, and they both challenge each other. But it’s actually kind of one sided, throughout the relationship you see Yaguchi constantly make sacrifices for Akira. But she never really makes and effort for him. He puts so much effort for her, and it almost feels like he’s the meat holding the relationship together. Its not really a relationship, it’s actually more codependent when you think about it. It’s the same dynamic with Hidaka and Yaguchi, only difference is that Hidaka was only influenced by Yaguchi, he encouraged her to find her passion though indirectly, and she inspired herself to get better and better until she could challenge him. Which is not only more realistic, it’s also astoundingly more sympathetic than a girl who’s just good at gaming from the start, never voices her opinions on things, and somehow gets whatever she wants. Hidaka went from being a shy very quiet individual, like Ono, but she grew into her own without the advantages that Ono had, and managed to become a good player that can challenge even Ono, and Yaguchi. She also something that she was truly passionate about, although it was through Yaguchi. I mean her character development is insane. She’s arguably the best written character in the show.
I fully agree, and I actually don't like seeing the term "love triangle" because that's not what this is. It doesn't become a triangle just because Hidaka is in love with Yaguchi-he clearly only has eyes for Ono. We instead get two different stories, one where Haruo and Akira learn to connect and love each other, and one where Hidaka discovers herself, her passions, and learns to not get hung up on a guy who doesn't want her. And btw, Ono is incredibly interesting, e.g. the time we see the reasons she chose her playable characters or the time she runs to her driver to apologize for getting him in trouble are glimpses into her personality. She's an abused girl who often gets violent because, for all her education, she hasn't been taught how to express herself, BUT she's still kind and compassionate, and knows how she wants to live her life. Haruo understands her even when she's silent, and that's a very strong basis for a relationship.

I feel like Akira is a fantasy character, and Hidaka is far more realistic. Most people in real life don’t have the advantages that Akira has, being rich, adored by everyone, and a super gamer. Don’t get me wrong, she’s cute, and to some extent I can relate to her, but Hidaka just so relatable and realistic that I’ve found myself liking her more and more the years. Hidaka had to work to get where she did, she didn’t just have everything that she wanted and needed. Same thing with the romance, Akira and Yaguchi were always going to be together, they needed each other. Whereas Hidaka was meant to be a friend.
I wish they didn't make Hidaka a third wheel like that. Her final scene in season 2 is heartbreaking as she reminisces about how Haruo had won her heart after introducing her to the world of gaming.

I really didn't like the sight changes they did for subbed, for example 5:07 it was so much more adorable in dubbed, anyways this anime is a masterpiece I wish more people would looked passed the art and just give it a try. I can't stop rewatching and also one of the best love confessions and the music!! Truly a masterpiece. Nice video
Koharu and Akira are both great girls that I don’t mind whoever ends up with Haruo. The show did a great job on making the choices hard where in Snafu it was easy for me Yui was my choice while Yukino was meh

That's why when we know she lose many people stop following the series. Author know hidaka popularity than the real heroine and make spin off called high score girl dash with hidaka as protagonist after 10 years after main story. We see daily live hidaka who really change after become school teacher. And in some chapter we see story about she still not married at her old age because can't move on from haruo and focus work. Meanwhile haruo and oono only hinted they work outside japan if i not wrong.

I WON !", dude was real annoying, no wonder she had those reactions. It's real hard to be so much in love with such a dumbass teen lol. Teenager age is already an age of conflicting thoughts, being deeply in love with a dude that gives you desires to wreck him doesn't help AT ALL.
