I agree with you and stick with this.I have been in this for 17 years.I agree on the visual inspections first.I seen with a 2010 Chevy Impala with the windshield wiper fluid level reading low although it was full.Found it was unplugged which the electrical connecter was bad too.
I like the videos you do on this channel. There are enough guys doing repair videos, no need to get into that when you've already got a good thing going.
look you help me out a lot. I'm a mobile mechanic for myself as a business. Anything that I need answer to from a shop point or business point you answer
You're doing a great job FRM! I watch your channel, Eric the Car Guy, Scanner Danner, etc so I can get some tips and gain any knowledge I can get from y'all that I have forgotten more than I'll ever know. I'm more of a DIYer and work in Law Enforcement. I haven't wrenched on cars for a job since the early 90s, but I like cars and have been a Petrolhead since I was a small boy. I'm wanting to do repair work on the side, plus have something to do when I retire (I'm almost 50). I'm doing an automotive course to refresh, learn, and add other skills I know I don't have. Keep doing what you're doing.
I don't know how I missed this video Mike, but it's difficult to understand why there are people out there who don't understand this concept. You took the words right out of my mouth on this one! God bless my friend and thanks for sharing this!
FRM, All your advice/wisdom is valuable whether your a DIY'er or Pro , the viewer just needs to LISTEN. With all the car and manufacture (make and model) specific videos available on-line, those comments from viewers who want vids will next be asking you to come over and help and or fix their vehicle for them. All they need to do is join the dozens of forums out there and brush up on that up coming job...... ie be prepared! By the way, your personal protection/safety advice is spot on : don't concern yourself with its popularity as the smart tech's will listen and Learn and the foolish ones won't be around very long ("they are all rapped up around the impact"). NOTE to tech's who don't take care of themselves , your not going to touch (warranty or no warranty) my car if you can't even care for yourself!!! Thank you FRM.
My heath and Safety video has done way better than I every thought it would it is an important videos for young techs and I really hope they listen to the advice! Thank you and glad you enjoy the content!
I hear you man, people don't understand the amount of time that really goes into this job. I have had friends and family suggest to me to do videos, or even case studies for that matter. Forget that jazz, when the day is done I don't even want to look at a car. The worst is when people find out you are a technician. I tell them to make an appointment sounds broke. Again I enjoy your channel for what it is, keep up the good work man.
Keep on doing what you are doing. You fill a niche that is under served. Sure, it would be nice to get all the subscribers and everything that comes with it but I think you will keep growing regardless. I left the industry 19 years ago for the software industry and I still enjoy the heck out of your videos.
Thank you! It is a very under served niche. Doing repair videos would not guaranty me subscribers, but would be more "main stream" but the channel growth is very good for a niche market and I am blown away by how fast the channel has grown, I should hit 2k this month and that is awesome! as I have only been putting out videos for 5 months and really 4 for real!
I'm a heavy equipment and diesel tech and I enjoy your videos way more then any of them guys and your not full of your self like the "big six" keep it up !!
I'm a do it yourselfer, and I enjoy the videos for tool reviews and what you use them for. I work on my Ford E250's and carpet cleaning machines daily. Thanks for the great videos and information. I was always interested in the auto repair industry, but life pulled me in other directions.
Love these videos because it’s one professional mechanic talking to the next and everything you say we can relate to. Keep doing what your doing along with the great tool reviews
This channel is awesome. I’m a tech and I love that this is dedicated to techs. It’s unlike any other channel. I am 1 year on my own now and I was an apprentice before that so this really helps!!!
I love your channel the way it is, I can watch repair videos anywhere but your unique perspective of the profession is why I watch your channel. Keep up the awesome videos!
Like you said there's plenty other people doing repair videos I enjoy your videos as they are No need to do case studies Im subscribed to all the guys you mentioned lol I find your tool reviews very usefull Im buying cam seal installer you mentioned in another video
Im not a pro and I love your channel. I mostly watch to get ideas for tools that will make my hobbies easier and more effective....I bought several things I didnt even know existed before watching FRM and they made my life alot easier working on my motorcycle and doing maintenance on my car.
I appreciate all that you do I I'm an intern at a shop currently Gathering tools and going to school almost done with Automotive and also getting my associates in applied science and more and more every time I spend more time in the shop and watch these videos they help me a lot
The channel is awesome the way it is. Especially when you talk about tools that make the a job easier. And of course, the new tools you purchase. Keep the videos, and your style of doing them, coming FRM.
I like what you do. I'm a one man shop so I don't get to have conversations with other techs. So I get that from UA-cam and the tool trucks. I don't really care to watch how to stuff at this point. Even if I research a problem that I'm stuck on I prefer to read as it's quicker to glean the information and get back to work. Thanks
Thank you, I enjoy repair videos not for the repair, but you can learn lots of different ways of doing a job or that little tip that can save a good bit of time, but not to learn how to do a repair at work:) more for future education. Thank you!
I am a dreaded DYI but love this channel because I learn alot from it, stick to your guns man ~ great vids! The niche diagnostic case studies is a great ideal actually; there are many channels doing basic repair videos already...Eric O started that way then began showing more elaborate diagnostics that other shops can't figure out...
Good for you -- stick to your format. I agree completely. Not every channel is about a race for the most subscribers, and the ones that do are usually not worth watching. Being the "Flatrate Master", you might consider doing a series to give tips from experience on how to be faster/more efficient in getting repairs done.
That's the cool thing about it being YOUR channel. You can do with it whatever you want! If folks don't like it, they can find another channel. Do what makes you happy! :-)
You don't have to justify yourself. The sun is shining for everyone. I'm a DIY and I like your videos and subscribe to the channel. When I want to see other things I'm listening others channels. Don't stop what you're doing, I'm learning a lot from you.. Thank you very much
Good on ya, stick to what your channel is about. You have a unique perspective and that's what makes your channel standout. The world and his dog make repair videos. I'll never work in the auto repair industry but I still find your videos interesting. Cheers
Thank you, yes it is a very hard thing to stand out in repair videos, I always thought my channel would be a niche channel and have no problem with that:)
I would have already figured Mike that it would have been difficult for you to film repair videos in a working environment. But I guess some people don't understand that :) Stick to what you wanted your channel to be about because you're not going to please everyone. And I'm like you that when the work day is over, it's time to go home :))
Not going to lie I primarily watch you, ETCG1, and humble mechanics videos about shop life. I live, eat, and breath the shop life so I can appreciate your wisdom. I'm a young guy in the shop and gravitate towards the wise older gurus.
That's a good explanation of why it would be so challenging for YOU to do repair vids. I like that you're sticking to your niche as well. Great video response FRM. 👍
Gotta take the high road and forgive some people's ignorance. ETCG & SMA have their own shop, so they have the freedom to allocate time for video. Whereas FRM is an employee who has a boss to answer to & make money for. There is only 1 place to go when you are not making money or making yourself useful to an employer. I'm an entry level tech (which I guess is called general service tech below the 49th parallel) and I enjoy your videos immensely. Love your tool reviews especially when it comes from a tech in the field. More importantly subjects like different kinds of repair shop, trade schools, and many other topic of the trade that weren't in textbook or briefly mentioned makes your channel stands out to me. So many stuff want to say, but tired of typing. Probably could do a 15min. rant video for response. Bottom line: Your Channel, Your Rule! PERIOD!
You have a great pro approach. You would likely not be very efficient at flat rate if you had to also film all day. Keep up the great job! Diagnostic cases would be cool
As long as I have been watching youtube videos, it has never occurred to me to message someone and tell them how to better conduct their business. I'm pretty sure you do what you do in the way that you do it for a reason and you don't need anybody else to tell you different. It also usually seems to be the case that it's coming from a faceless person with no channel content of their own. That's who always says snarky crap to me in the comments section! lol. Great video's :)
I like the fact you don't do repair videos. People have no idea how hard it is to manage a shop and other techs while still producing hours themselves especially day after day
You made it clear, and yo won't loose subscriber. However just as suggestion, and as you said, we will really appreciate if we can have time to time some case study. Thanks for your channel and your advises. Best look...
Case studies will happen, the timing just has to work out, most of the time when I am filming I just have boring stuff in the shop or already torn down or repaired, but I will make it happen. Thank you!
I'll tell ya what. If you want to mostly help people already in the business. Make short fast 2-5 minute videos every so often when you get a car in that you know a trick to do a job faster and point out how you do it. Or maybe when something real crazy comes in you could show... Just little tidbits of knowledge whenever you think it would help someone. That would be a good idea I think. And would only take a couple minutes here and there.
I will be doing something like that, my issue is I never remember to record it:( But I will work on it, it will more than likely be several tips in 1 video complied, just got to remember to get the footage
Yeah, can't shoot until it is dark in the shop or I you can barely see me on camera, so I normally do not leave the shop until 10 or so, and yes there is protection along for the ride:)
LOL, I watch them all the time, mostly to pick up little tips and different ways of doing things to help save time, but not to do a repair at the shop that minute:)
FYI. I Looked Before The Car came in. Someone told them it needed a Special Tool. I Don't work on VW's Usually. Alldata was Indecisive & Looked like It required a special tool. If ther'es a Work around it will be on you tube
Not safe working alone after hours either. Something goes wrong and you're pinned under a vehicle bleeding with no help. Totally worth it for a few extra subscribers 👌
Enjoy your video's. If you want to see how to put a rad in a honda go watch eric the car guy or eric o. Ive been the industry a long time and have the same opinions and experienced the same things. Keep it going.
Hey Flat Rate Master,.... I dig your shows and listen vary much to your P.O.V., and respect that ... but Maybe you know the answer to your own statement, but any feed back from your viewers is a good thing. So here is my thoughts; " Right on YOU DO YOU IN WHAT YOU WANT, AND WHO CARES WHAT OTHER PEOPLE THINK. I KNOW YOU ARE HELPING ME". Also!!! P.S. ... remind the little guy he doesn't always have to have the whole line of snap on shit or I missed that video... it's a little intimidating to me not wanting to throw away hundreds of dollars on tools in the END that your family can't get back if you get sick or pass on due to your personal investment.....sorry that's my opinion and not yours . "RESPECT"!!
+kkovler1 I am still on flat rate, I do have a productivity bonus based on overall shop hours, but most of my pay is from Flat Rate on the hours I turn
You may just need to not be so damn full of yourself. Plenty of channels that don't to repair videos that eclipsed your channel long ago. Start caring and maybe you can help more people. Don't bother replying to this. I'll never see it.
My channel has only been around for 5 months and about to hit 2000 subscribers, that is very good growth for a very niche channel! I never intended it for the general public, I do what I do to help auto techs not DIYers
Love your videos keep on doing what your doing.
Will Do!
Channels like yours are needed as well.
No problem FRM, we tune in for your expertise and Automotive wisdom and insights ( and honesty) ; not your hand skills.
Glad you enjoy the content!
I agree with you and stick with this.I have been in this for 17 years.I agree on the visual inspections first.I seen with a 2010 Chevy Impala with the windshield wiper fluid level reading low although it was full.Found it was unplugged which the electrical connecter was bad too.
Thank you!,and you gotta at least look at the part before you condemn it :)
I like the videos you do on this channel. There are enough guys doing repair videos, no need to get into that when you've already got a good thing going.
Thanks Clyde, I thought that too:)
look you help me out a lot. I'm a mobile mechanic for myself as a business. Anything that I need answer to from a shop point or business point you answer

I am doing my best to help techs make more money in this industry. The big six has fallen apart.

That is in the works the issue I am having is how to format the presentation to get my points across, but once I work it out I will!
Thanks! My thoughts are it is your channel do as you want and I think it is a good concept.
Thank you!
That's the cool thing about it being YOUR channel. You can do with it whatever you want! If folks don't like it, they can find another channel. Do what makes you happy! :-)

Not going to lie I primarily watch you, ETCG1, and humble mechanics videos about shop life. I live, eat, and breath the shop life so I can appreciate your wisdom. I'm a young guy in the shop and gravitate towards the wise older gurus.
I like your channel the way it is. Very interesting to me. Your channel is growing and will continue to the way it is. Thanks !
Thank you, My channel growth is way beyond what I thought it would be, and that is awesome!
Flat Rate Master is the GOAT of UA-cam channels for techs and new workers in the auto field and this is why 💪
You are 110 % right.
Having a unique format is very interesting. Like your honesty and approach towards the entry level techs and ones in the trade . Keep at it buddy .
Thanks Steve!
That's a good explanation of why it would be so challenging for YOU to do repair vids.
I like that you're sticking to your niche as well.
Great video response FRM. 👍
Thank you!
Thumbs up for setting good boundaries. Keep up the good work.
Thank you!

Thank you very much, You are the young techs I started this channel to help, very gratifying to hear comments like this
Keep it up! Love the videos. One of a kind channel for sure!
Thank you!
Your right, over time your clips will be helpful.
Great video... family time is a plus and must. Thanks for replying to everyone comments. 👍👍
Thank you! I do my best to reply to everyone!
Everything you said is true and valid to YOUR life/situation. I understand that. Other folks lives are different. Period.
You have a great pro approach. You would likely not be very efficient at flat rate if you had to also film all day. Keep up the great job! Diagnostic cases would be cool

Will Do
Stick to your guns. Your channel is terrific !
Thank Keith!
I like the fact you don't do repair videos. People have no idea how hard it is to manage a shop and other techs while still producing hours themselves especially day after day
Most techs do not either, the tech that handles things while I am off hates it! Thank you!
How do you get compensated as a foreman working on tickets vs just a standard tech? Sorry if this is too personal of a question, just wondering.
I am paid on normal flat rate for my work and they I have a bonus based on overall shop production
I discovered you about a week ago... Great channel! Thanks
Great channel Michael !
Thank you Norman!
Understand Completely 😎👍🏼
Thanks!
Bridge thing? Are you near ATL and the 85 bridge?
I am not an automotive tech and never will be. I subscribe to this channel, specifically, to understand that perspective.
Your video is very great. Keep them coming.
As long as you have time for live chats in the future... all is forgiven LOL! Looking forward to case studies if & when the time comes!
Always Thomas!
Keep on, keepin' on! Much respect!
Thank you!
Thank you!
Thanks Flatrate Master
I did ac system in class on a semi truck...its intresting
thank you for thinking of your fellow techs bud.
I'll tell ya what. If you want to mostly help people already in the business. Make short fast 2-5 minute videos every so often when you get a car in that you know a trick to do a job faster and point out how you do it. Hi , what do you think about verus edge ?
I like it have had no issues with it other than coverage issues but it is used several times a day
Your videos should be a courses at these schools
Thank you!
What kind of tool box is that?
Matco Revel X
Excellent video FM. you style is cool. keep em coming
Awesome, thank you!
I love this channel the way it is👍
Can you do a couple of repair videos?
I’ve tried to film some repairs but it is almost impossible to do in a normal work day.
What’s the plan with your assets of tools once you retire ???
No plans to retire, as far as quit working
I like the fact this channel is not for non professionals .
Great content I look forward to every video you make
there's enough Repair Videos. some are funny. 9pm in Atlanta? I Hope your packing.
Yeah, can't shoot until it is dark in the shop or I you can barely see me on camera, so I normally do not leave the shop until 10 or so, and yes there is protection along for the ride:)
I hear you man ,good video’s 👍 GOD Bless you
Keep up the good work i like your videos, if i dont know how to do a repair i use Identifix.
You make want to get back into the industry
LOL
I Did watch a Repair Video To see How to Change a Headlight Bulb on a 2010 VW Bug
Don't change a thing. Like it the way it is.
Thank you, I will:)
Not safe working alone after hours either. Something goes wrong and you're pinned under a vehicle bleeding with no help. Totally worth it for a few extra subscribers 👌
Can make video on owning your own business pro. And con.
Yes that video will be made at some point
Eric the car guy made a whole channel were all he does is talk about stuff because that's what people want haha :)
Yes. You stay late & miss out on life so people can get free shit. Like there isn't enough of that in shop culture already.
LOL, UA-cam gives me a dollar or two:)
You know what I was inferring . lol everyone wants diag time for just the cost of the part & install.
Yep, was making a funny😁
great video thank you for your video don't challenge a thing I like your video's good going
Thank you!
Enjoy your video's. If you want to see how to put a rad in a honda go watch eric the car guy or eric o. Ive been the industry a long time and have the same opinions and experienced the same things. Keep it going.
Yep, I never intending this channel for the DIYer market, plenty of those channels. Thank you very much for the comment and I will keep on trucking;)
Teach man to fish sounds old but works.
👍👍👍amen!
Hey Flat Rate Master,.... I dig your shows and listen vary much to your P.O.V., and respect that ... but Maybe you know the answer to your own statement, but any feed back from your viewers is a good thing. "RESPECT"!!
We pay for our training but are asked to make videos that give away free training.
I'd say 95% plus of the people watching car stuff don't work on cars.....
Yeah more than likely very true, I mean ETCG is coming up on 1mil subs and gets no where near that on his videos
🖒You're doing great love the content. Best comment of the week "I don't care" lol your channel your rules.
Thank you! I thought that comment might piss off some people but all of the responses have been very positive:)
I donot recommend the average Joe working on their own car because that's more work for me
Well then why do you have a U Tube channel?
+Mark Quigley to teach young Auto techs life skills, not to teach DYERS to fix their cars
