I've been watching a lot of the Vaganova ballet academy videos, and I just don't understand how these dancers are "elite". Yes, the Vaganova school turns out astonishingly beautiful dancers, some of the best in the world, but Joffrey is supposedly one of the better NYC ballet schools, and its dancers shouldn't look like they've merely been chosen from a very good high school dance group in comparison. Why do the Joffrey School dancers look so unprepared and poorly taught, even in contrast to the SAB or ABT young hopefuls? The dancers on Strictly Ballet and other ballet school shows seem to be stronger dancers with more dedication and professionalism, while these kids are coming off as more arrogant all the time. There's no room for arrogance in dance--it means you aren't focussing enough on correcting your own errors and increasing the ease and beauty of your movement. Two episodes ago, we learned that one dancer has been dancing 2 years and another 4. Their progress is wonderful in such a short time, and both have real potential, but are they (or most of the others) really ready for the title "elite"? I wonder, and I wonder at the troupe's leaders for setting them up to fail here in a way that could really damage their professional careers like this.
They're an organization that needs money because they're not affiliated with the company anymore. They take pretty much anyone who auditions, and any pre professional would choose ABT JKO or SAB over JBS. I made the mistake of going to a JBS summer program a few years back, but I look back at it now and contrast my experience there to my recent experience at ABT New York. JBS is actually a very low tier school, if you know what I mean, their name is just big because so many students go there.
Cindy Chen Right, and they still benefit from the Joffrey name because people associate them with the company. For those who don't know, the only school endorsed by the Joffrey Ballet is JAD in Chicago.
@@blancaah6 the company you're likely thinking of is the Joffrey ballet in Chicago. The NY "Joffrey" (which is not affiliated as described in previous comments) mainly has the school, which isn't the greatest. They have a "studio company" but it's basically better kids from the school, while they're in school, putting on a show. The whole program is in essence a money maker, if you're serious about wanting employment with a company it's not a top choice, FAR from the "top five in the country" which they boast in the show.
The dance was going well, but there were a lot of mistakes (seriously, the shoe? I danced ballet for like a year when I was a child and even I know we're not supposed to fix our clothes or anything in the middle of the dance) and it just wasn't emotional, it didn't make me feel anything, just made me cringe a bit (also a bit confusing idk)
Is this the right Joffrey or another company? There technique is not the best, there is no emotion and come on the shoe thing? My dance teacher would have killed me for that....
Back when this was filmed, it was still the renowned Joffrey Ballet School. The school has since been sold, and is taken over by Russians who have since turned it into a money maker vs an elite ballet school. I hope this answers your question.
Sorry... the boys look like they are marking in a rehearsal, not performing on stage, let alone competing... I would never let my kids go on stage looking like that.
They were not pointing their feet... and also the guy whose shoe came off... it was an accident, but if he had been taught right, he would have danced to his full potential even if he had lost it mid jump... that would have been better than what he did...
This is not THE Joffrey Ballet school. The real true Joffrey Ballet moved to Chicago around 95 (if I'm not mistaken). They ARE NOT the same, even though they share a name.
This can't be associated with the actual Joffrey school. It would be embarrassing. I mean the boys are awful! Harrison barely points his toes and can barely do the jumps/leaps. If these were the best guys out of that audition...smh...scary. Hope the next performance is A LOT better than this!
Honestly, I think there’s too much going on in the choreography. In pointe pieces I’m a true believer that less is more, especially if the group is lacking in technique. It also felt like there are just too many people on stage at the same time. My eyes don’t know what to look at.
Music wasn't dynamic and was kind of boring for the whole thing. Would have been nice to see some ups and downs. I also don't see any artistry from the group. They look sooo bored and serious up there. Even if it's a more serious piece, don't let your face look dead haha. Arielle both had some nice expression though. Also, WHY is it necessary for the boys to never wear shirts??? I think it's a terrible costume choice, but that's just me. Maybe for one piece, but if every dance they do has shirtless boys it stops being interesting/different.
Lovely choreography. This is a huge learning experience for these students. I hope they take advantage of the filming and learn how to finesse their technique. Balanchine created everything to look fantastic from the audience's perspective. That philosophy would work well here. It's not just about the steps but how you get in and out of them. For instance, lowering the working leg in temp level turned out and not dropping the chest when landing jumps for the girls. Anna was great. Her poise and attention to detail is a cut above the other ladies. Keep pushing ladies and gents. You have a huge advantage from this opportunity.
Maybe I am missing something here but are these teenagers meant to be the best from Joffrey Ballet school? Because that was just bad in every sense: Technique, Emotion, Timing, Spacing, essentially every aspect of dance. There are many dancers from normal dance schools who dance far superior to this. Either the school does not deserve it's reputation or these teenagers are new dancers because this is not the level of those trained from the age of 3-5 who have a chance of becoming Principles.
Why did this sorta look like beautiful individual dancers dancing to their own tune? Like I couldn’t see what was meant to be there and what was too messy. It sorta looked like chaos. But what do I know maybe it was really good?
THANK YOU for showing more of the dancing compared to the last performance. It was nice to see almost the entire piece instead of just snippets. That said, as others have already said, the performance was definitely rough and I don't think they're going to be scoring very high for this piece. Also, I'm glad they kept Matt from the show because he wasn't dedicated to learning the choreo or even attending class, so why should he be at the show???
Matt need to go period!! He's just so uncaring and sad he took a spot another would work their butts off for. you shouldn't have to beg a student to do what they signed up for. Whatever is going on in his life it's not at all about dance. Fernando is a great dancer. He more than deserved that promotion and was good to see him at comp.
if you're a well trained dancer, a shoe wouldn't make you perform badly...👀 it looks like all the guys have been doing ballet for about three months, which I know isn't the case, but it makes me wonder if all the people they cut could even dance at all....in NY of all places....but there are better companies than joffrey,so who knows...
the dancer who's shoe fell off, i think he's only been dancing for 2 years? people go to school to learn right haha, im sure this is a learning experience for them. but yeah, he could have probably left it half on since it was the end of the performance really, just running around and a lil jump at the end. it looks better than fixing it or kicking it aside, judges/the audience only have so much sympathy. tight draw strings + double elastics = key
OppositeofHATE7 I agree. Seeing this performance made me think, how prestigious really is this school? I've always been told to keep dancing no matter what. Don't adjust your shoe. Take it off and dance in bare feet. Just don't let the judges notice! Also, the men looked like they were marking the entire routine! There are many other NYC schools with more dedicated dancers, but I guess Joffrey has a reputation from dance moms.
OppositeofHATE7 you all clearly don't do ballet or dance at all, you don't realize how hard it is. Yes some of them weren't pointing their feet, so what? They're all still incredible dancers and better than you'll ever be. I'm not trying to hate but pointe and ballet is so hard! You don't understand. These kids work SO hard.
They definitely need to work more on technique before the choreography as some of these dancers have only a few years of dance under their toes. Can't expect a great outcome if the lines aren't right nor their feet or strength. Definitely need lots of improvement
When i saw the competition was called BTS i was like oo thats my fave group. Then when the guy said 'blood sweat and tears!' Later on i was like ahhhhh thats like my fave song by them as well!

I'm so excited to go to this school as a trainee next year. I've been binge watching these for weeks.
Yikes!!! the boys are not pointing their feet at all, and many times they are standing there looking around not knowing what they were doing
Patricia Levinson YES ikr and the girls arms are out of place so often!
Patricia Levinson I agree but don't forget one of the boys injured his toe which is no excuse but it is understandable why he wouldn't be so good
Who else does ballet and pointe
Dancing Reice AWESOME me and jazz tap and hip hop
if u r professional, u should've left the shoe. this dance was terrible lol. it was so messy
Moi!!
Me! I just started and I love it sm

It's amazing what you guys are doing. This young dancers will grow so much after this show. Really hopping to see them on a big stage someday
I have parts where my shoes would consistently fall off and I still danced to my fullest with out fixing it
The color of the costume was gross, and the choreography was really boring. I am looking forward to the contemporary piece next week.

this absolutely cannot be the best THE Joffrey Ballet school has to offer... am I missing something here?

is no one going to talk about the song change? I thought it was supposed to be to harrison's song
Rebekah G the second piece is Harrison's song. It's going to be in the next episode🙂🙂
thats for part 2 this was the other guys dance
Rebekah G That's the one I wannna see!!! I love contemporary--this one was boring
How can we get Harrison's song??? I wants it on my playlist!
I wish I could meet you guys.
yall realize that this isn't the joffrey school you're all thinking of..? its a different one
5:02 were the guys supposed to have their feet like that....? i mean their pose wasnt exact...
This time I liked the choreography
The BTS references🔥🔥🔥im living
jeez, how did they choose these dancers? I really expected more from joffrey BALLET school. Half of these girls dont look like they are even ready for pointe work
Anna is underestimated. She and Eduardo should do a piece together
I was expecting Vaganova quality and all im feeling is Dance Moms.
for me exelent exelnte para mi ,uy buen espectaculo todos muy bien ymexifer tu muy bien saludos desde chicago la villita
I can just hear my former dance teacher getting upset with this performance. Hopefully in the future episodes I can see more growth. They're not a group yet.
Does anyone know what the songs called for the pointe piece?
Fernandos so good!
any army's here? cause beyond the stars (BTS) and then the coach said Blood sweat and Tears. AHHHHHH

Brisa Barajas Huerta i do
Harrison's technique is just horrible when you put him next to Fernando and even just himself alone.
Yay 😊
why dont they have their seat belts on at the beginning :( those vans are prone to flipping and rolling
I’m so incredibly convinced that this is not joffrey ballet.
why the heck weren't they wearing seatbelts in the van on the way to the competition?! Crazy!
early squad where u at
this is real dancing, dance moms is just showing that you’re flexible that’s not dancing
Gummy Noodles suga😱💜
Gummy Noodles no they are different styles of dance lol
this isn’t THE Joffrey ballet school and it shows

what’s the song??
is this the real joffrey ballet school??? I'm so confused what did i just watch lol
If you only watch Harrison, I don’t think he can dance, maybe a bit of partnering but Idk how he made the team

at 1:08 ... Sarah Hunt from dance moms?
The boys flexibility is just not there

Blood sweat and tears manhi manhi manhi any armys? 😂
😂 I love that song
Yes! Love BTS! Going to their concert?
Alisha Noonan i went to their concert in Anaheim it was soo amazing
HARRISON SHOULD NOT EVEN BE AT JOFFREY AFTER THAT PERFORMANCE. HE HAD ZERO COORDINATION. ARE THEY PRANKING US RN????
So choreographers were worried about the spacing was off, but they didn't care about their timing, which wasn't good enough?..
Im sorry but ballet dancers don't fix their ballet slippers on stage.
Anna and Fernando 🤗
is this like dance moms? are the competitions fake?
These videos are way too short and are taking too long to come out...
