The Nanobots rebuilt Red Dwarf as a favour to the crew. Since they knew Lister and Kochanski were already there, there was no need to resurrect them.
Plus, Lister never died. He also kept Kochanski's ashes stored separately from the other crew members in the hope that he could find a way to revive her. Presumably, they were aboard Starbug, and therefore not on Red Dwarf for the nanobots to resurrect.

In truth all seasons of their show had their moments so none of them were entirely bad. It's just that most agree that the show peaked about seasons 3-6 with very tight scripts, great performances decent low budget production values and plenty of interesting sci fi concepts.
Captain Hollister is brilliant. He adds so much.

Surprised no one mentioned he was the boss of the settlement on LV-426 in Aliens.
I dig how some actors made good careers later. Captain Holister was in the fifth element and Olaf Peterson plays Father Brown.
I was impressed with how many of the actors they got back who played crew on the very 1st episode.
I remember hearing Rimmer was returning, however only found out the crew were there in the trailer…a shame Mark Williams and Robert Bathurst were unavailable but it still works 😊

Me too, I forgot about Season 8 but once I saw the intro I remembered it all and I still like it. I re watched it so many times while Season 7 it has good parts but not that great. But I think Season 8 still holds up.
Watched all this stuff as kid too. PBS KTCS 9 TV channel here in WA would do telethons with a few Red Dwarf cast members with donators getting merch sent to them.
Pretty sure we still have the VHS recordings of several telethons stashed around here somewhere.
I think my overwhelming feeling of watching it on first broadcast was that I was glad Chris Barrie was back, as it hadn’t felt the same without him.
Finally you understand what people have been saying since the beginning! Series 8 is weird and breaks the Red Dwarf mould.
For me personally the introduction of katchanski never worked. I can think of great lines from every other character. But can't think of a genuinely funny moment from katchanski. Moaning about pineapple chunks or plumbing? I never got the character. They seemed to be trying to push a will they? Won't they? Thing with her and lister. But there was absolutely no chemistry. And it just made him look like a simp and her look grumpy
I definitely one of those fans who really enjoyed season 8. It's hard to nail down exactly why it all worked for me, but it did.
I'd forgotten how much of this episode I've quoted in real life. "Medically needed a pint" is almost a catchphrase. I've even managed to get "both cheeks man" into a conversation... don't ask lol
For all the flak S8 gets, it starts off pretty strong. Obviously the best news is that Chris Barrie/Rimmer is back, though he is "reset" back to the point he was when he was alive. Similar to the second hologram of him in Me2, he's "factory fresh" and fully smegheaded. Mac MacDonald is back to stay as Capt. Hollister, and Lister's old drinking crew even pops up. Well, 2/3 of it anyway. Unfortunately Mark Williams/Petersen was by now busy being Papa Weasley in the Harry Potter films, so he didn't turn up alongside Selby & Chen. There's a lot of "back to the start" in the beginning of S8: the first visual being Lister and Rimmer again stuck in a bunk bed together was not accidental, its a return to the roots of the show and re-establishing that Lister vs Rimmer dynamic that was the axis of the show in the beginning years. Red Dwarf has never fully "rebooted" but this is another "reset" and start of a new era of the show.
The ship is back, Rimmer's back, Holly's back, even Capt. Hollister and the crew are back. The potential and promise is wide open, and it was fascinating to see what they did with it, even though I didn't always like it. Even though I've been down a lot on S8 in the comments, it still has some of those bright spot moments that only Red Dwarf could manage.

the rest of the seasons though lacking something are still worth a watch. there are some excellent eps and gags.. the moose gag is worth the wait.. and the organic printer ep is well done.. dont give up
you should watch another show Chloe Annett starred in around the same time as these episodes, called 'Crime Traveler'. It only got 8 episodes but I love it, its basically a detective/crime show but with time travel, it's awesome.
I remember that show! It got absolutely slated by just about everyone, but I thought it was good fun, too.
Bloody Hell! I didn't think it was only eight episodes long!
Series 8 is a lot better than people say - my opinion, obviously. There are some seriously hilarious moments on the way.

I think some bits were even filmed to be filler for short running episodes if needed, especially the scenes with Archie (best keep that spoiler free for the newbies)
the nanobots knew lister and kochanski were on starbug so they didnt remake them. Rimmer had already gone off as ace so they remade him.... except the nanos gave lister his old bod back (and chnaged kochanskis hair :P )

Some people slated season 8 but personally I loved all the canary shenanigans. 🔥🔥
Hologram Rimmer was never really alive. It was a computer program inside a light beam that buzzed around, simulating the personality of the late Rimmer that was on disk. I think the whole idea of an on-ship hologram was to help the crew get over the loss of a friend or loved one.
It's always been my theory that HOLLY tweaked the Rimmer hologram to make it more antagonistic, competitive, theatrical, entertaining, weaselly and to have it not learn from its experiences or grow and develop like the real Rimmer would have. I think HOLLY programmed it to be like that so that Lister would stay sane. If the real Rimmer had been stuck with only Lister on Red Dwarf, he probably would have walked off and rarely made contact with him. Let's not forget, Hologram Rimmer had over 600 years worth of experiences from Rimmerworld, and yet, he still behaved like that 21-year-old "smeghead" from the first episode. He hadn't grown or developed at all, which wouldn't have been possible with a real person.
Now we're getting the chance to see the real Rimmer, who is capable of learning and growing, who might be more compassionate, more of a friend to Lister and unaffected by HOLLY's programming. When Lister and Rimmer are sitting next to each other in the brig, I noticed an awkwardness, a level of respect and a slight lack of confidence with Lister that I hadn't seen before. Maybe it was good writing, clever acting or maybe I'm over-analysing this?
Funny listening to you pair talk about cursing yourself with predictions, when we still haven't forgotten "imagine if they spend the rest of the series stuck on the stupid bug"
I'm rewatching s8 for the first time in a long while as well, and I feel like it's got high highs and low lows (and sometimes both within the same bit) compared to other seasons.
happy that my fond memory of the first couple of "setup" episodes wasn't misplaced, I still really like those, but I won't say any more in the interest of not spoiling anybody.
First time I saw this version of Rimmer I couldn't help but wonder would he go through the same character arc as the OG one or go on his own different journey.
Ladies, just hang in there. This is a great season. You should know by now to expect the unexpected. (Perhaps the Kochanski from the original ship is off with the Lister from the other dimension that she married in Stasis Leak.)
I really enjoy this series. You will grow to enjoy the characters the performances are great
I do tend to shit on season 8 a lot (and I mean A LOT) but I think it's just that the humour gets even more laddish in this one, I do not like most of these jokes, so much so that I actually do tend to skip an episode this season that I find genuinely too distasteful, which is something I never thought I would say. I think there are some good jokes in here, even ones that net a cheap laugh out of me and I think the premise of this was very, very interesting, especially the last episode of this one. All in all, there are some ups and downs, but get through this and then you're back into decent territory (well, some have mixed opinions about the special, I think it's fantastic)
I agree, it gets really laddish. It's dated terribly but wasn't great at the time.
There is definitely a tone shift from the early seasons that showed the Red Dwarf crew. Everyone played it straight in early series but in series 8 every single character is cartoony. As for Rimmer, I don't think this Rimmer in series 8 actually is like the old Rimmer from series 1 and 2, he is much more mellow in series 8 even though i'm sure he is supposed to be the original Rimmer resurrected.

Decent start to series 8. With you both on wanting the Rimmer of old back. With all his growth as a person, it really does feel like reverting to a very basic version. I loved the "Kryten to Factory Settings" analogy.
Really looking forward to your take on this series. Tikka to Ride was a very high bar. Backwards, Camille, Holoship and Psirens were all great first episodes of their respective series too.

You may or may not like season 8 but its ok. There's a good gag coming in season 10 and it's worth the wait! Hang in there.

I always thought there was a massive gap between series 7 and 8 - but being 12 years old when this aired time does run much slower as a kid!
There's a HUGE gap between 8 and 9 though.

I think they always were better friends than we thought though, we just only see them when they're fighting

Kat, you seem to be feeling exactly like I did after seeing this for the first time in 1999. What about Rimmer's character development!? When will the rest of the crew F off so we can get back to real Red Dwarf!? Episode 1 was entertaining, but I couldn't help thinking they were finally messing TOO much with the secret sauce of the show.

Ohhh, they have adventures, boy do they have adventures. There would be no reason for the nanobots to duplicate Kochanski because she was there when they found the nanobots so they already knew she existed. They recreated the ship on order from Kryton, the rest they did as a favour.
As for Rimmer, you two ALWAYS liked Rimmer. What you got used to was the evolution of Rimmer. This is still the same Rimmer in character.

Fair enough, we all like what we like. Red Dwarf was amazing for 6 series, then ok for one. After that it just disintegrated into the disaster that is series 8.

"A good gag in S10"?
There are good gags in even the few less than fantastic episodes. But I assume the one you mean is "weird but true".
Series 8 seems to have divided opinions but personally I'd go as far as to say it's one of my favourite series of Red Dwarf, because as well as the main characters, there are other memorable characters in this series too, including a guy called Ackerman who appears later on in the series! Holly has some brilliant quotes in this episode too, my favourite is "I hope we don't get stopped by the cops, they don't like it when you're rat-arsed", which is a British slang term for being drunk!😄😄😄
In the opening sequence, it was meant to be Lister's cat Frankenstein they, er, encountered in the vents, but they ran out of budget so they made it a CGI rat instead. They also blew a lot of the budget on Starbug exploding, hence why it appears so much in the opening credits to get their money's worth (same thing happened in Stargate SG-1 when they blew up a pyramid). Series 8 is very different but IMO it does come with some of the best dialogue in the whole show, as we'll see.

I forgot to say, they've said there's going to be a new series of Red Dwarf to be broadcast on both the BBC and DAVE (owned by UKTV which is owned by BBC Studios) not sure when exactly it will begin filming etc.
the whole season is in the Tank. the idea was to get rid of Starbug and have stories that focused more on being on Red Dwarf because the fans wanted it at the time
I really like about half of this season. Some of its humor hasn’t aged very well, I will admit, but at its best it’s an improvement on Season 7, I think.

Captain Hollister is great. There is one episode that has very "laddy" humour. I am interested in seeing your reaction to it when it comes up.
The first time I saw RED DWARF on TV were episodes from Series 8, and I thought it was absolutely hilarious, so I kept watching each week. Then 3 episodes later the season finished. Then I got the DVDs and watched from the beginning. Because of this I look upon Series 8 very fondly. I understand it's probably not as great, and very different to the earlier Series but 8 is still a very funny!
Rimmer is mad a lister cus he poured a tube of monkey vomit on him. Thats why he says that. Its nothing they comeback to, just a one scene joke. This is for sure a jarring season but its still mainly fun!! Lister says its been 5 or 6 years but really it had been 10 years since filming the very first series of red dwarf for the cast
Lister wasn't reconstructed because he didn't die. I think the best argument for why Kochanski didn't get revived is that she slipped off the ship to live with the Lister from the double double future, just before the accident. (Stasis Leak).
Well actually the best argument is she was there when they found the nanobots so they knew there was no reason to duplicate her.
I don't think in 25 years I've ever heard anyone ask why they don't have duplicates, I never thought about it because alive on the 'bug. Most have been confused about Kochanski's hair though.
I love this series. I think/hope you enjoy what they do here.
This is the series I've been most anticipating you watching. It's very girl-unfriendly and you two are... well, girls. Note that everyone's suddenly a cartoon character and, crucially, the ending is more than a bit r*pey. That's going to be a recurring "gag" throughout this horrible season.
Also fun to see Kat's nonplussed face when a gag is a prisoner with green hair and piercings. There is ONE decent episode in this run, but it's almost an accident. Never noticed Kochanski being different before, but I guess I saw it with the broadcast gap, rather than just the next week.
Totally agree. Series 8 is a real low. Back To Earth is wonky for sure... but at least it has a soul. It's at about something again and Craig in particular gives an astonishing performance. S8 is a unpleasant cartoon of half baked, quickly cobbled together stories that rarely make much sense - either in plot or character terms.
@@theyearsshallrun6641 Yeah, people are down on S9, but it has to be taken on different terms.. it was a comeback on a budget when some of them were in their 50s. It can't be expected to be on the level of something like this, which was Red Dwarf produced (almost) continuously and still on the BBC with some cash behind it.
I quite like the idea that when the crew is restored all their freedom that they've taken for granted is suddenly removed, but after a couple of episodes... where does it go from there? There is ONE decent S8 episode though, IMO, beginning with the letter C.

You loved back to earth? I liked a couple sense but I thought season 9 was the weakest in the entire series. I don't think I even watched it more than twice.
You all nailed it right on the head. Series 8 isn't "bad" per se. The characters are all still completely in character, and there's still a lot of decent humor. But it just didn't feel quite like Red Dwarf any more this season. And with "Series 9" really just being the standalone mini-movie, it wasn't until Series 10 that I was really truly and properly hyped for Red Dwarf again.

It is not as daunting as it seems seeing most seasons are 6 episodes and are only 30 minutes.
Do! The series 9 special is a bit wonky due to a v v v low budget / tight schedule but it has good moments and a lot heart. Series 10-13 returns the show to a classic format and have some really great episodes.
@@SketchyMagpie Yeah - the "new" stuff. I did watch the mini series, and that pretty much turned me off the show. Tried when it went to "Dave" but the episodes I did watch made me feel like they were just rehashing old ideas...

When you were wondering if we would ever see Red Dwarf again a few weeks/months ago, you never dreamed we'd be seeing this much of it, did you? 😀 Re: The no duplicates of Lister and Kochanski, in Nanarchy, Lister and Kochanski are aboard Starbug when Kryten instructs the nanobots to turn the planetoid back into Red Dwarf, there was no need for the nanobots to reconstruct either of them. Though they arguably could have been responsible for Kochanski's otherwise unexplained makeover. 😂

There was a two year gap between filming seasons 7 an 8 so they probably thought no one would notice any changes with Kochanski's hair and people's outfits.
So, Craig spent some time time behind bars before this season, so *this* was a great idea... and hey, where is this universe's Kochanski?
The nanobots only resurrected the crewmembers that were not on Starbug as a favour, so this universe's Kochanski remains dead.
There's no 'rebuilt' Lister and Kochanski because the nanos knew there already was a Lister and a Kochanski to slot into the crew, and also because who cares \o/
Series 8 made me laugh harder than any other.
One of rhe complaints about series 7 was the lack of comedy compared to the previous seasons so in this they really do accelerate the comedy more and return to the two hander bunk scenes of the first season.
This season is absolutely crazy I'm so glad i'm re visiting it thanks to you girls😂😂😂

I actually like the fact that Rimmer is the old Rimmer because he has not had the experiences that the hologrammatic Rimmer that became ACE has, it is a massive curve ball after the escapades of series 7...up up up the ziggurat lickety split :)
Series 8 can be funny. It can work at times...but the crew being back is a damper on it for sure because they just don't fit anymore and things feel less weird even when they're weirder than ever.

I'm glad you noticed that there should have been two Kochanskis! Chloe Annett was dyeing her hair in series 7 to look more like Clare Grogan (the original Kochanski) and they decided she didn't need to anymore. I'm always going to be in favour of actors and actresses not needing to stick with changes to their appearance if they aren't necessary.
I have mixed feelings on this season but Captain Hollister being back is a big highlight.
The Dwarf was made by the Nanobots as a new home for the Bug crew. Recreating extra copies of any crew actually on the bug wouldn't make sense.
Part of me really hated S8, but there are some absolute jems. Cassandra is one of my top 10 from across the whole lot

Yeah series 8 is and odd one, I don't outright hate it, but it's definitely a complete tonal shift. It does eventually go back to what you'd expect Red Dwarf to be in later seasons but if I remember correctly, in a draft or two of the unproduced Red Dwarf Movie, series 8 would have lead into the movie, which was then changed to be a complete reboot in later drafts. (I maybe completely misremembering this, but there were apparently A LOT of drafts for the unproduced movie so...😂)

I didn't like the crew returning. For 7 seasons the boys from The Dwarf have been in charge of their own lives (kind of!) but now they're not. It felt a bit stifling.

Just to say; A lot of people fall in love with a show and don't deal well with changes in the narrative, but.. They often don't realize that they'd probably appreciate the show less if they DIDN'T reinvent themselves on occasion. But don't worry; They will continue to ignore continuity (especially script-wise) so no new trope ever last forever.. It may bea couple of episodes or a couple of seasons, but.. The only constant is change..
It is the series after this one that I personally really don't like.. I mean.. I KIND of appreciated it and enjoyed watching it; I just would've preferred if it was considered to be an offshoot or some form of "Comic relief" special or what not.. instead of being part of the canon.

Ah it's safe to come back now. Season 7 was just so utterly awful that I just couldn't even watch you react to it.
They liked it. Said the first two episodes are in their all time favourites.
Series 7 is massively underrated imho.
Series 9 is only 3 episodes. They're not good. But they work better as the single 1hr directors cut, which i think you should cover instead.
Nah, they should power through the season 9 movie. There is one really really funny scene that at the time seemed ridiculous but no a much less accurate sense actually can be done today. Lol

I don't mind S8 tbh it's not as good as the previous seasons but it's not terrible either some really good episodes, also having the crew around does bring a little extra to the show.
I enjoy most of series 8, especially Captain Hollister.

It utterly astounds me how many people within the comments section are saying that series VIII is good. My brain simply cannot process how anyone whom enjoyed series I-VI (and possibly VII) could possibly think that this is on par with those series. It actually hurts my brain, just trying to comprehend that line of thinking.
I thought 8 had some really fall over laughing moments in it. Season 7 the whole candy thing (as a teen, I could have sworn the candy scene was longer with it sicking at least 3 times. Don't know if they cut it for DVD and streaming, or I misremember it) in 8 there are several parts that were just crazy funny and several story lines that were just great. There were a few truly bad episodes too though.
VIII is a soulless, cartoony, unpleasantly blokey mess.
Unpopular opinion but I like season 8. The show kinda needed to take a new direction.
