- Between 1863 and 1865, a Confederate prisoner of war camp was operated on Rock Island. During its operation over 12,000 POWs came through the camp.
Museum Director Patrick Allie discusses the history of the prison barracks, its guards and prisoners, and some of the unique artifacts in the collection related to the prison barracks.
My great x4 grandfather, John Raymond, was a sergeant in Company K of the 37th Iowa Volunteers (the Greybeards) He was with the 37th from the beginning to the end, so would have been in Rock Island at some point. He was 55 years old when he enlisted. I am the proud owner of his noncommissioned officer sword. :-)
My great great grandfather died at this place .He was a confederate soldier from clarke County alabama. He died from a disease
My great great uncle is buried here. He was a confederate prisoner and died on October 30, 1864.
My great great grandfather name was Horace Wilson from clarke County alabama
I love the 108th U.S.C.T. part of this story! Poetic justice and karma, for sure. I would love to know their stories if they were ever documented anywhere.
