Any mention of the GCR in or near Rugby has my attention! Have done this section from the Newton picnic site more than once.Of course the Rugby/Loughborough/Leicester/Nottingham section finally closed in may 1969.Going south I've pretty well covered it down to the Catesby Tunnel now a test facility.
Another informative and most interesting watch.... As I've said before...I'm a huge fan of GCR..(I live in Loughborough.)... and the time you take to make and produce such a brill vid is admirable... Another fantastic film.. Great stuff my friend....more please... Daz
Hi there very interesting bit of former canal. I have sailed the new canal a couple of times and was trained as a helmsperson at Rugby Wharf with Willow Wren who were original canal carriers on the Oxford and Grand Union canals. Caroline.
The bridge over the Oxford Canal was known as The Fish Bellied bridge. You can see why when you look at the photo. At Newton opposite where the signal box was there was sidings. These were used for transporting ballast along the line during construction. Once the line was up and running it was moved. Nice work look forward to part 2.
Great video as always. Thank you.
Cheers Derek!

Some great locations on the section you mentioned. We did filming about Woodford, Charwelton, Catesby and Willoughby last year.
Interesting video Paul, those concrete signal posts were made near here at Melton constable
Thanks Russ. Interesting fact 👍🙂

That sounds very exciting Caroline. Looks a very busy canal.
With your interest in your local canals a helmsmans certificate may be of use to you too. caroline.
Just the other side of the canal, there are whats left of, 3 circular supports in the undergrowth.
Cheers Steve. I did wonder as much 👍🙂
Giving bridge nos is great as I watch these videos with Mac Hawkins Great Central Then and Now which has photos and maps.
Cheers Michael. Will bear that in mind.

You are going too far south Paul! 😂😂😂 you will covering the London Underground next. ❤👍
Hahahahaha well funny you should mention that Carol. I do have in the pipeline a few London visits. One of them GCR related 🙂
I keep thinking he's going to get a nosebleed when I take him this far south!!!!
@JGstrongman5317 it is a possibility
You gonna end up raking some mileage in if you plan on heading South, further. See you both in Marleybone next year 😃
Hahaha great idea Marleybone
Oh yes, plenty of plans for further south!!!
Had wooden signal posts near me in Cambridgeshire.
I wonder if the original ones were wooden and the concete ones were LNER upgrades.
@@WobblyRunner It had an LNER lamp too but that may have been BR keeping stuff running.
Let md know next time youre in Rugby for the canal. I've got something interesting to show you.
Will do. Cheers 👍
A totally unnecessary line to be built. ( Watkin's ego ahead of commercial requirements) , but what a waste destroying it.
I think you're right on both fronts Brian 👍🙂
