I remember when LOST first aired and people were bothered by the subtitles for Jin and Sun and asked why they couldn’t just speak in English. I’m glad shows nowadays are more open to using subtitles.

I love how they contribute speaking mandarin in the movie. It’s more authentic and natural with the characters. I love this show! They did such a good wonderful job connecting the modern time to the old mythology stories I grew up watching from the Monkey King! Thank you for this. I enjoyed it so much!

To me honestly the mandarin in this film ain’t that great but still not bad the reason I say not that great its beca that i was told that Daniel Wu did a northern accent in his mandarin but when I heard Daniel Wu northern accent i was like meh that ain’t no northern accent that’s a southern chinese accent with some northern influence but still not even close to be considered northern accent or Beifang Kuoyin GuanHua still not bad for a foreign made movie to have good mandarin dialogues but still this film doesn’t really properly represent us chinese at all it still looks like a chinese fantasy shaw brothers movie made by Americans that is stereotyping us chinese how pathetic but stil not bad i will watch it

@@tinlunlau1 yeah that’s why its so messed up and stupid to say that its a northern accent but it ain’t its like the opposite of the so called translantic accent in english language where the person speak a common language which is english in a accent where its a mixture of both American and British accent that’s so messed up same goes for a chinese person who speaks mandarin with a mixture of both northern and southern its like its not quite northern and ain’t quite southern that’s so messed up and pathetic if you asked me even my sweetheart girlfriend who is a Beijinger that is actually a Dongbei Ren herself who is born in Harbin Heilongjiang province and was raised and brought up in Beijing the capital of China even she speaks better more authentic northern accent than this dude

Yeah, dubs always rubbed me the wrong way. It's quite hard for voice actors to match the energy and delivery beats perfectly, plus it's really distracting for me to see lips move one way, but of course the dub doesn't fit the lip movements most of the time. Subtitles for me all the way.

It's common for some shows/films spoken in Mandarin to be dubbed into Cantonese instead of subtitling.

I’m an asian (Indonesian) who raised by kdrama, j-dorama, cseries & telenovela shows. Sometimes I watched from illegal link which gave english subs-sometimes Malay, which were not my main languages. Korean/Japanese shows with english/Malay subs and my brain automatically translate into Bahasa.

i can see the motivation behind making the actors speaking in chinese as representation but it personally ruined my watching experience because the chinese is so off pitch, i end up having a headache from the actors speaking crappy chinese. the asian representation exists by having majority asian actors in the show not really having the actors speak chinese. Having actors with better chinese fluency such as pitch pronouciation would improve my experience watching the show in chinese since i could barely understand the converstions in the show but having the actors speak in all english is better way to go for season 2 since not everyone is fluent in chinese .

There's a strong distinction between written language and spoken language. The written language is Standard Chinese and the spoken language is Cantonese, Toisanese, Mandarin, Shanghainese, Hokkien, or Hakka, etc. Speakers of all the different spoken languages read and write in one written language, Standard Chinese, so even though their different spoken languages are not mutually intelligible, they understand each other through the written word.
