The faith of this song is rather curious. It came from a proven eurovision country, the singer was excellent, the songwriting of the highest level that year, the orchestral build up thoroughly competent, all wrapped up really nicely. And yet, it came 10th behind the likes of "More than love", "Wir geben 'ne party", etc... This song should have been at the very least top 3, and it would be a far worthier winner than Rock 'n Roll Kids, a very nice song in it's own right, but paling in comparison.
This deserved so much better than 10th place!

@vordman not only is she Sylvia Young's daughter, she is also Eliza Doolittle's mother
I think it's the classic case of a song just being too good for Eurovision. When you compare this song to some of the winners over the years it's quite amazing
best uk entry ever!!! still in love with this. it's the only uk entrance that should have battled for victory
We really sent dome amazing songs in the 90's - Frances, Imanii, Sonia nd Gina G💕
Good song. This and Poland were my favouries from this year.
10th place for this masterpiece? so many people with bad taste..
The best UK entry ever along with Where are you? by Imaani
this should have won....awesome!!!
This is why UA-cam is better than TV. I just thought to myself I'd like to hear the 1994 UK Eurovision song again and here it is! The people in the record shop hadn't even heard of it but good old youtube.
Song and performance impressed me then and still do today - truly outstanding and sooo British ;-)
Beautiful, elegant, classy and talented. That is all to say.
Its a very good and to advanced for her time with a light touch of the 90s very good uk
She should have won the contest!
I didn't like this song first time around- but now (after the second time listening from beginning to end) I love it!
Frances Ruffelle rules!
She was in the original cast of les mis...she played eponine and can be heard in the 10th anniversary edition. For anyone who says she can't sing have a listen to that.
Wow.. I've been searching for this clip since 1996! I taped the broadcast in 1994 and since then i love this song! I'd listen to it on cassettetape for thousands of times in the past 15 years, but unfortunatly i lost the vcr somewhere in 1996. I'm so glad that i found it here on youtube :)
Frances, you did a good job there!
I've said this so often I'll probably get shot for it sooner or later, but this is my fave UK entry. It stuns me; it's so original and in the spirit of the times. Frances also gives a performance that leaves me speechless. Bravo!
Love this Song.
Greetings from Germany
My dad used to tape ESC every year (on VHS when I was a kid, now on DVD :p). I used to watch the tapes from 1994, -96 and -97 over and over again when I was 6-10 years old (1995 must have been a bad year :p). I don't know why I enjoyed it so much, but ever since then I LOVE eurovision... Anyways, I loved the UK 1994 entry when I was six years old, and I still do. :-)
It's one of my favorite British song at the Eurovision, it soul have won the 1rst place!
my favorite this year was Iceland but I really like this one too. 1994 was such a good year !
i loved that song back then
Indeed; where is all the quality that the UK possesses such great quantities of in the musical field?
Oh I miss the times when UK sent something like this to the ESC. Compare this to Jemini, Daz Sampson or Scooch and you'll understand why UK isn't getting much votes nowadays.
yes, very much so.... still stuck in my head after all these years...
GREAT SONG! She is pretty too.
Era mi favorita junto a Alemania, las dos mejores canciones de Eurovision del 94
I love this song!!
why can't UK sens songs like this anymore?
It's hard to believe that this song on came 10th?
deserved better than 10th! didnt really like t song at t time, heard it a few years back and thought its real good.
I adore this song but I can understand why it didn't do as well as expected - like others have said, it was possibly just too modern for the Eurovision at that time and if it had been submitted as an entry in recent years (say in the last 3) it would have done a lot better....
I don't think the UK has submitted anything even close to this in all the years since. We need to get back to picking wonderful songs for the ESC :)
Just my opinion though, I'm clearly biased hehehe.
This deserved much better than 10th place!

Is this the river dance year? If so, still got the whole thing on VHS. Best year!
I was nighnteen. Now im fourty one never realized why didnt get the first place!
Nice song- she is beautiful too.
Yeah! Everyone was really surprised, as it was very well thought of and voted 2nd favourite to win. But Eurovision scorings have more than once and more than twice been utterly inane - that year's winner is enough evidence to back that up.
And I have got your point a million times before - and it's a definite no-win situation.
When this came out I was on a Eurovision hiatus so I knew nothing of it until recently. WOW, it's terrific, a really great performance. Miss Ruffelle is apparently Silvia Young's daughter I've since discovered. How come I've never heard of her until now. This should have launched her into stardom. What further compounds this mystery is that the winner from this year was crap. IT'S HAS TO BE A CONSPIRACY!
Her and her daughter, singer Eliza Doolitle, look so alike. :) Good song. :)
I wonder what the scores would have been if the studio version of the song had have been performed - higher? / lower? the same? I've always liked this song.
I think the studio version was flat and lifeless compared to this version. Beautifully orchestrated and I especially like how it builds throughout!
Not the UK's best entry by any means, but still a good song, with a very nice melody. She's beautiful too.
still spectacular in 2013
DUBLIN 1995? NO! LONDON 1995!
Best year in esc history!!!
true winner
Probably the same.... The good songs never win Eurovision. It's a well known fact. This should've won in '94, Shiri Maimon should've won in 2005 with "Time to say goodbye" and last year Yohanna should've romped home with "Is it true?" At least Frances has done pretty well for herself. She's performing her songs live at the Edinburgh Festival this year and has a new studio album coming out in April. Well done Frances!
this song is amazing and was one of the best in 94. However I think the song was to modern for the eurovision at the time and that's why it ended up ONLY at 10th place. Sounds like a light darkchild/stargate production.
is´nt Eliza Doolittle her daughter?
I think everyone knows that Riverdance, won the eurovision for Ireland in this year. Irelands 1994 was very dull. Britains entry was far better and should of come at least 2nd!!
I wouldn't say though that Frances Ruffelle fitted into the "crap" category. Amongst other things she won a Tony for her performance in Les Miserables on Broadway
This didn't win? Ireland won that year with this: ua-cam.com/video/9G4a9y2UPqY/v-deo.html and I was like wtf.
British song is better than Irish song (my opinion).
It was pretty boring, but it was not as apalling as the Irish entry of 1993- that made my ears bleed!
NEVER LIKED THIS...still dont
like if you think eliza doolittles mom is well fit x
I just love this song by her... My favourite Eurovision entry of all time and I'm 47!
I bought the single when it came out and TRIED to sing and dance like she did in my sitting room! I still love it now and it makes me want to sing and dance like I did when it first came out.
Sink or Swim was another fantastic song by her. Thanks for posting this.
