Dan, this is my FAVORITE video of yours. I’ve watched tons of your Voltron/TMNT/MOTU reviews over the years, but this particular review always brings a huge smile to my face. Thanks for sharing your passion and enthusiasm for these toys because it is definitely bringing more positivity to the collecting community.
Hell Yeah!!! I'm 48 years old in 2022 and I love this stuff. I have all the original 80's vintage toys but now I need this one. A++++ Thumbs Up Brother! Much love, respect and mad props! : )
Now, I'm not an 80's kid- I'm a 2000's kid. And when I first saw Voltron: Legendary Defender, I fell in love with it, and it easily made it's way to my second favorite animated series of all time! So much so, I picked up all the combinable lions in one go! XD And when I realized my Voltron was based off of Voltron: Defender of the Universe from the 1980's, I went and watched it and I LOVED it! It's absoleutly great, and I could definetly see myself being a giant fan if I'd been an 80's kid. And so it's super cool that Playmates released a classic version. I am for SURE getting my hands on these toys! :D As always Dan, awesome review! I love how enthusastic and excited you get, and the energy you put into it! Thanks so much for reviewing!
Woah! Your really lucky because I heard the 80s combinable lions for voltron are really rare and are worth a lot now! I have the the Voltron Legendary Defender set that are made of real metal (I don’t have the green lion yet but my dad is getting it for me!)
beast king go lion was great especially to see just how toned down voltron was here in the states. I can understand why they did it but it would be cool to see a dub version with most of the original cast from the 80s and some sound a likes for the parts they don't have the actors for just for a more visceral nostalgic feel to it.
Oh geez....i need this. Voltron was just barely before my time, but I had older siblings that were into Voltron. I always caught the reruns on USA network in 89/90 before I would go to kindergarten.
Personally, I’m glad that Playmates brought back the original Voltron from the 80s, even though I’m not an 80s kid. The classic Voltron is my all time favorite because of the origin and the story of Voltron. It may not have all the fancy animations as Legendary Defender, but will always be the best in my eyes.
I recall these Playmates Classic Lions take cues from the Soul of Chogokin Voltron. From the equippable weapons Matchbox nixed to the extra bits of articulation to make them kneel like in the cartoon, that makes them amazing.
That toy looks so cool, l never had the original voltron when I was a kid but playmates brought the toy back and this is my second chance to finally own one ,or at least 5 lions to form 84 voltron!😎
I really don't like the spring loaded jaws. I mean, what if I wanted to pose some of the lions roaring? I really think a basic, firm hinge would've worked better. The Blazing Sword is also a disappointment. That said, I am really surprised Playmates even gave these lions all their extra weapons and such. The elbow joint on the red and green lions seems to be able to swing either way, which allows you to have them wiggle their butts before they pounce. Which is an adorable image.
I cut a short piece of a clear Action figure stand to keep the Red and Green lions mouths open to simulate a Roar because the spring mechanism on them won't let the mouths stay open
About a week searching but I finally found the last 2 , the blue and green lions last night. Pretty awesome toy and review. Cool of you showing how to place the shield and sword . I was wondering why there were hanging.
it is cool that the individual lions come with weapons similar to what the original Matchbox Voltron were supposed to come with. Due to safety issues, those weapons including the blazing sword were taken away from the american release.
Couldn't believe my eyes when i came across these. What an ace idea - re-releasing the original toyline as it was'ish. Funnily enough as a kid I had the black lion, blue lion and yellow lion... so my Voltron was always (h)armless lol.
burble74 I know. But I'm saying if they remake small diecast version like they did for the legendary defender version(they have a small diecast version). I would pick up the playmates diecast classic (if they made a version like that)
I had the original Voltron toy back in 85, I subscribed to the club lion force thing and got the whole set plus Sven, I'll be getting this as well, hopefully they'll make the pilot figures too.
Awesome! I'm glad you got him. I agree with you about the arm articulation but I think it's probably also because of the electronics in it. I really dig the similarities to the Soul of Chogokin one from last year, and the sculpt of the Blazing Sword & Star Cutter shield look like the Masterpiece Toynami one. The lack of silver paint or chrome doesn't bother me too much, I just wish the Black Lion had come with weapons though, and I don't care for the lips on Voltron's face - but that's just me nitpicking. Thanks for taking the time to share this.
The black lion is actually 29.99 while the rest are 17.99 as you mentioned. Still waiting for target to officially put them out, only saw the tags out. Great review btw!
They are out at Target and at Toys R Us (online) I picked up Yellow, Green, Blue and Black at Target and ordered the Red from TRU online. They dropped a few weeks ago.
I just got this in today and I must say that having to break up the sculpt to get his arms higher is not really true you will have to break the rules a little bit but, it will not break your figure if you are careful if you pull out the arms and put them in against the keyed position it will go in all the way just be sure to turn the electronics off as the arms will not register when you activate it. I was able to get him to holding the sword with both hands this way and the classic pose of him holding the sword over his head and the green lion facing toward you without having to break the sculpt!
would be cool if some 3p designed new connectors for the arm lions so they have the proper articulation. it would also depend on how hard it is to disassemble those lions.
My biggest gripe is the sword I really wanted them to put the guard and paint job on the sword but I guess I'll have to fix that myself unless anyone knows where I can get a more screen accurate sword.
Would love to hear your thoughts on the GX-71 Soul of Chogokin from Bandai. The cats have ball joints in all their shoulders, as well as the paws. I have gotten some really amazing poses out of them!
Awesome review! Just saw all these while looking around in Target. Had to pass on them as I didn't have enough money on me but hopefully I get the whole set sometime soon. Wonder if Playmates will release a complete box set (TRU exclusive, maybe) so that I have a nice box to display them in. Kudos for the head articulation! that's the one area I complained about on the Legendary Defender Voltron.
I still need to get the Yellow and Black lions for my LD Voltron, but I may have to get this Voltron two just because it world be cool to have two different Voltrons. Also these toys and all the talk in the show about alternate realities really makes me hope to see classic Voltron in the new show at some point.
Thanks for reviewing this. I have considered getting it since, back when the Mattel ones went on sale, I was only about to get four of the lions. Getting the black lion these days is much too expensive, so I may just sell those and get this.
Growing up I had a yellow lion that when you moved the head to the leg position it would bring the legs closer to the body. It's mostly die cast and very well made but don't know what "edition" it was. Much better made than any other I've seen.
I wish the blazing sword was longer. I looked at my trend masters reissue, and the blazing swords are roughly the same length yet that Voltron is closer to twelve inches tall.
oh lucky you, they sent you the lions, tracking the lions in retail is a massive task on their own since they are cheaper! I got them for 107 total! Also the inner legs have an tab on the inner lions that hold the legs from going up to make him stand up better!
My Red Lion is in shipment, should be here in a day or so, I cannot wait to get him all together! Great review! Now, I need to get the set from the new series.
No, the ratchets don't keep him stable. Ratchets are as finicky to get right as diecast metal, and they rarely provide more stability than a solid friction joint would provide. I can see the play in the ratchets when he's wobbling, and that's unacceptable on a figure that size. It means his ratchets aren't properly designed to carry his weight. I've seen some enormous figures carried by robust friction joints alone, and they don't have that kind of wobbliness. I'm not saying the would definitely work for Voltron, but I can't imagine tight tolerances and good QA would have been worse than his actual ratchets.
Great video, but yeah, that shoulder articulation just prevented me from buying it. I was tempted as it looked good and the price point... I'll just have to settle for the Soul of Chogokin version (no really, its gorgeous).
Another excellent review again👍 Thank you!! Sir I have a question. I am planning to collect all the lions of Voltron 84. Do you think which voltrons stand more stable, the Voltron Legendary Defender or the Voltron 84? I have the Legendary Defender Voltron and sometimes it's annoying to find it's balancd to stand. Please let me know. Thanks very much! And more power👍
Great video, can't wait to see these guys at retail. How far do the elbows bend compared to the Legendary Defender arms? That was one of my few quibbles about that release.
The Black Lion not only has the face of Voltron in its mouth, but the face can fold up to the top of the lions mouth and give the black lion a regular mouth interior with detail. C'mon Dan, flip the BLs ears out for Voltron mode...
208:06 But Dan, you didn't show my childhood favs, Matchbox Deluxe Voltron III and Matchbox Miniature Voltron III. The LV group photo is incomplete! Great video, though. :)
I have the Panosh Place Voltron as well, plus the figures. In the show that wasn't a shield, it was a throwing blade. I see you have an intro for Voltron reviews. Will the Masters Of The Universe be making a return?
Love the reviews Pixel Dan! I love this Voltron! Like you, I grew up with this one. Legendary Voltron is awesome, and for some reason I told myself I wasn’t going to buy this one(what was I thinking) I am so glad I decided to get this one(as of now I’m still hunting for the red lion) He looks way better in Voltron mode than LD one does! I love them both, don’t get me wrong, but somethin about the original I grew up with! I guess the nostalgia gets me every time too Bro! :) Cant wait to see what playmates does next! Keep the reviews coming. Great job!
The button that the red lion hits when plugging in to the voltron’s right shoulder is being weird for me, when I put red lion in it makes the sounds, but then when I go to push the button in voltron mode, it still saying to “form arms”
are you sure the red lion is on the correct side? I only say that because I had the legs switched and it wouldn't read them until i put them in correctly lol
wow! just amazing! are you sure didn't get this off a customizer? lol J/K... how big is he to the aerialbots? or the constructions? he looks huge. this version of voltron looks similar in height with master peiece ultra magnus
Rogue Trooper Didn't made any sense to you so what's the sense of your message?! Ok for your sake since you're slow ill make it simple. I didn't bought the first release but I'll buy this new one. Made sense now? 😉
Dan you SHOULD DEFINITELY hunt down a copy of the DX Godaiken Go Lion set or what Matchbox released as their version of Voltron from the 80's as that's definitely way better than the one from Panosh. I have it and God damn I absolutely hate myself for not taking good care of it. Basically my Black lion has one of his thighs broken off and my Green lion got cut in half with no way of fixing 'em up any more T_T
christopher de leon yes they do. I haven't gotten the blue lion yet, but I tried the legendary defender legs, and while the blue lion was a bit finicky they both went on and the sounds even recognized the lions. I think I tried the red classic lion on the legendary black lion too. It does work.
completely unrelated but how did you get your hands on the TMNT Muckman figure been 9 months since you made the video on it never seen it in the stores in the line and it since the show's over and he goes for over $1,000 online

RIP Sven, the forgotten pilot of the Blue Lion
It's okay, he's in space hospital!
Alexx1083 no, in the original version he died and got replaced by his brother.
Did Sven ever come back later on?
xboxgamerJ16 in the english release he made several appearances after getting injured. In the original he died and got replaces by his twin brother.
Nosrep Suomynona:I’m more like,Rest in Peace guy that did original voice for Hunk
I still need to get the blue and yellow lions. Can't wait to complete it and pose it with the Netflix figure. I always turn the electronics off.
Oh geez....i need this. Voltron was just barely before my time, but I had older siblings that were into Voltron. I always caught the reruns on USA network in 89/90 before I would go to kindergarten.
I hope playmates also makes a smaller diecast version with the classic voltron just like what they did with the legendary one
Same!

Looks great, but I am happy with the Toynami version.
It'd be awesome if they did Vehicle Voltron.
I thought the same,
No one likes the vehicle voltron but I would buy him since I already have this one.
@@cf2228 why would you say that?!? I like him !!!
That toy looks so cool, l never had the original voltron when I was a kid but playmates brought the toy back and this is my second chance to finally own one ,or at least 5 lions to form 84 voltron!😎

Thanks for sharing, Dan. It's always a pleasure to watch your reviews!!!
I would love for Bandai to one day get the Voltron license and make a version on the same peg system as the Megazords
Yeah that would be pretty cool to have a Voltron with Build-A-Zord ports.
cloneyoshi4JJ they came out with a soul of chogokin GoLion/Lion Voltron a year ago.
It would be even cooler if it played the theme song too!
Love mine. On my juke box. Brings me back to my childhood

If they make a diecast version. I will totally get it
kidchuckle the diecast version is what this is based on
It was from bandai Japan the same company that made the original
burble74 I know. But I'm saying if they remake small diecast version like they did for the legendary defender version(they have a small diecast version). I would pick up the playmates diecast classic (if they made a version like that)
damn man, this is so nostalgic. I had one waaay back then but I lost it when my fam was moving out.
They should make a Voltron force version
DT UNIVERS they did.
I had the original Voltron toy back in 85, I subscribed to the club lion force thing and got the whole set plus Sven, I'll be getting this as well, hopefully they'll make the pilot figures too.

Cool review Dan! I was so excited when I heard they were releasing a classic Voltron. This guy will look good on the shelf! 😀
the extended abs of the black lion is the same design of the soul chogokin version released a year ago. playmates made it based on that design.
The black lion is actually 29.99 while the rest are 17.99 as you mentioned. Still waiting for target to officially put them out, only saw the tags out. Great review btw!
Kevin Daelo I got mine from Target today.
They are out at Target and at Toys R Us (online) I picked up Yellow, Green, Blue and Black at Target and ordered the Red from TRU online. They dropped a few weeks ago.
They're already being clearance out. I've been everywhere trying to find the yellow lion.
One hidden feature of this set. You can interchange the lions between this one and Legendary Defender Voltron that was released last year.
I only had the Black lion from voltron 84 growing up. It came with the sword too.
pretty cool! wish the weapons were chrome like the original but this is very cool! Let the Toy hunt begin!
I just got this in today and I must say that having to break up the sculpt to get his arms higher is not really true you will have to break the rules a little bit but, it will not break your figure if you are careful

The arm shoulder thing really bothers me on how its not articulated to show the chest complete.

My biggest gripe is the sword I really wanted them to put the guard and paint job on the sword but I guess I'll have to fix that myself unless anyone knows where I can get a more screen accurate sword.
God I want to get these so bad. I'm a big OG Volton fan. These look nice.
Very cool...well made
Would love to hear your thoughts on the GX-71 Soul of Chogokin from Bandai. The cats have ball joints in all their shoulders, as well as the paws. I have gotten some really amazing poses out of them!

Has the Playmates Voltron line been cancelled? It is being clearanced out everywhere including the Voltron 84 toys.
I wish the blazing sword was longer. I looked at my trend masters reissue, and the blazing swords are roughly the same length yet that Voltron is closer to twelve inches tall.
Did you know you can swap lion for lion between the 2017 and 2018 versions, as they're compatible with each other?
Great video Dan! I heard these lions are compatible with the Legendary Defender lions, but I haven't found this version yet to try it.
oh lucky you, they sent you the lions, tracking the lions in retail is a massive task on their own since they are cheaper! I got them for 107 total! Also the inner legs have an tab on the inner lions that hold the legs from going up to make him stand up better!
its gotta be hard to do this whole video with out mentioning the healthy sized package's on the red and green lions. ha ha great work P.D.
My Red Lion is in shipment, should be here in a day or so, I cannot wait to get him all together! Great review! Now, I need to get the set from the new series.
So much Voltrons in the end! ^^
Wouldn’t the blue lion actually be the left leg not the right because based on Voltrons view it’s the left? Sorry that always confused me
No, the ratchets don't keep him stable. Ratchets are as finicky to get right as diecast metal, and they rarely provide more stability than a solid friction joint would provide. I can see the play in the ratchets when he's wobbling, and that's unacceptable on a figure that size. It means his ratchets aren't properly designed to carry his weight.

The elongated torso is due to the fact that it’s based on the soil of chogokin Bandai Voltron which came out The torso can stretch and articulate
Will they come out with the classic voltron space explorers?
Does this one have bicep swivel? it looks like it does but I can't tell
Nope he does not. Which is really odd since the LD one has it. Feels really odd so some poses just look off.
the forearm does swivel thou
Forearm yes but not bicep.
What do you think of the Soul of Chogokin GoLion that was released last year?? I don't know if you reviewed it or not.
i would buy two set of this, one as the lions and other as voltron
Excellent review Dan, as always
Great video, but yeah, that shoulder articulation just prevented me from buying it. I was tempted as it looked good and the price point... I'll just have to settle for the Soul of Chogokin version (no really, its gorgeous).
Another excellent review again👍
Thank you!! Sir I have a question. I am planning to collect all the lions of Voltron 84. Do you think which voltrons stand more stable, the Voltron Legendary Defender or the Voltron 84? Quality Toy Review! 24:34
208:06 But Dan, you didn't show my childhood favs, Matchbox Deluxe Voltron III and Matchbox Miniature Voltron III. The LV group photo is incomplete! Great video, though. :)
Quick...we need a company to scrimp on paint!! Playmates to the rescue! :/
Legendary Voltron is awesome, and for some reason I told myself I wasn’t going to buy this one(what was I thinking)
I am so glad I decided to get this one(as of now I’m still hunting for the red lion)
He looks way better in Voltron mode than LD one does! I love them both, don’t get me wrong, but somethin about the original I grew up with! I guess the nostalgia gets me every time too Bro! :) Cant wait to see what playmates does next!
Keep the reviews coming. Great job!
This is so beautiful. 😭
Very beatufu voltron i collect the lregendary voltron now i want the classic one i grown up on this voltron... Hell yeah!!
Will they have diecast version too?
I know this video is old. But great review. Will you get threezero and blitzway Voltron?
The button that the red lion hits when plugging in to the voltron’s right shoulder is being weird for me, when I put red lion in it makes the sounds, but then when I go to push the button in voltron mode, it still saying to “form arms”
are you sure the red lion is on the correct side? I only say that because I had the legs switched and it wouldn't read them until i put them in correctly lol
Good video to end the weekend
Has a 3rd party made mini pilots for this scale?
will wait for the 12 inch
You know the lions are swappable between the two Voltrons, Legendary and Classic legendary.
Can this mix and match with the legendary defender
Great review Dan.
Cool Review! But I'll skip this one because the ratchet tends to get lose in no time. I got the one from last year and did just that. ✌🏼
Did you know the previous Voltron lions from the Netflix series are interchangeable with this version? 😉
wow! just amazing! are you sure didn't get this off a customizer? lol J/K... how big is he to the aerialbots? or the constructions? he looks huge. this version of voltron looks similar in height with master peiece ultra magnus
i only have too things to say love it another great video thank you pixel dan
Make Diarugger, and I'll be interested :D
Pixel dan, do you have the SOC?
Now I know the reason why I didn't get the last Year's Voltron. I still prefer that classic one-- we're 80's man 😁
Ellen Sidarna That doesn't make any sense.
Rogue Trooper Didn't made any sense to you so what's the sense of your message?!
Ok for your sake since you're slow ill make it simple. I didn't bought the first release but I'll buy this new one. Made sense now? 😉
Ellen Sidarna I'm not slow, your grammar just sucks.
SiSa Bazilio: word 🙏
I read the arms and legs are interchangeable with the Netflix Voltron
We need a vehicle Voltron now.
Basically my Black lion has one of his thighs broken off and my Green lion got cut in half with no way of fixing 'em up any more T_T
do the the two voltrons have cross compatible limbs?
christopher de leon yes they do. I haven't gotten the blue lion yet, but I tried the legendary defender legs, and while the blue lion was a bit finicky they both went on and the sounds even recognized the lions. I think I tried the red classic lion on the legendary black lion too. It does work.
I already have all five lions. Super excited! I'm planning on repainting the blazing sword. Bummer playmates didn't do a better job.
its definitely awesome, cheaper than the matty collector verson
open the dang ears!!!!
I’ve been waiting for this
I mean seriously what do they have against the Blazing Sword
This is sooo cool, Allura is the best. Pixel dan can you make a video om the new paladins action figures?
U r a great collector..
I still prefer Mattel's version.
completely unrelated but how did you get your hands on the TMNT Muckman figure been 9 months since you made the video on it never seen it in the stores in the line and it since the show's over and he goes for over $1,000 online
