Great explore. I think the "ventilation" was for lanterns/torches that would of been behind glass to, obviously, negate ignition of the ammunition. They would need oxygen and ventilation to burn and extract the smoke. You can see the scorch marks on the ceiling @12:24 from the flames. The steps you went up were to maintain the lanterns/torches..
