I love how chico and harpo look at each other you can tell they love each other and harpo looks so proud of his brothers showing his skill at the piano
Don't know how many times I've seen this bit. No superlatives would be enough to define these geniuses, so I'll keep enjoying them over and over again. And again.
The Marx Brothers were multitalented artists. They grew roaming around the american theaters in the glorious times of the Vaudeville and when they begun to make movies they were experted artists.
Incredible!!! It was impossible for those guys to miss a beat! Their musicianship alone stands as a tribute to their great genius ...then add comic timing!!! Unbelievable!!!
Incroyable, famille d’artistes.
Talent and Timing from a time when entertainers, ENTERTAINED. No matter how many times I have watched this, it is still so enjoyable. A scene from, The Big Store. Another great Marx Bros. movie. I read that when the filmed that scene, the women were told to gather around, and watch Harpo and Chico but NOT told what was going to happen. This way their reactions were genuine and real...not "acted." If true, a clever idea.
Here you can see two obvious musical masters _playing_ (with) the piano. You can tell from their faces they are enjoying it. All others are still practicing.
@@laurab5750 thank you! The only thing people see nowadays are greatest hits. PLENTY of movies and actors sucked in Hollywood’s Golden Years. And just like today plenty of good actors were mediocre in lousy movies.
Impresionante...realmente impresionante..
my old music teacher used to go on at me about not holding my hands right when we were using the keyboards. I think if she'd played chico marx clips at the beginning of each lesson, I would have cared enough to listen to her. I always hated piano and keyboard so i never actually learnt it, but now I've discoverred Marx Brothers, chico makes me want to learn!
I don't know whether it really was effortless, but they really did give the impression that it was. and what's more, their actual sensitive musicality is brilliant!
Everybody knows that Haro was a great harp player but, not everybody knows he was an accomplished pianist as well. I'd go so far as to say he was the most talented musician in the entire Marx Brothers clan.
They know the piece as containing a lot of improvisational elements on themes so even when playing to a prerecorded soundtrack (on wax or vinyl in those days probably) they would still be improvising and since the physical comedy besides the playing is important they concentrated on the overall impact which is a Pure Joy!
My info came from IMDB and a biography of Groucho by Charlotte Brooks. Also, he was my grandfather's neighbor in California. Anyway, he was just a nice person and enjoyed life.
As talented as Harpo and Chico were, there was yet another talent in that scene, done so well it might be missed by some viewers. What is it:? "The camera work" Unlike today, where the camera angle would be changing every 2 seconds, their camera angles were exactly where they needed to be, throughout the scene. We got to watch, as though we were there. We got to see their fingers on the ivories, actually creating the sound on the piano. Today, there would be close-ups of teeth, eyeballs, beads of sweat, etc, and dubbed piano notes from a session done separately in a studio. Think about your favorite songs and the videos made for those songs. Almost without exception, you never get to see the artists creating their music. They show you scenery, and close-ups of their noses, and dancing, and everything except the talented artists on their instruments. The only exception is the vocalist. They do show them from the neck up, no matter what part of the song is being played. They show you the vocalist, no matter what is happening on the drums or the guitars, etc. And before you say "they show that, too", take another look. You see the guitar player at a distance (not a proper close-up of their fingers). And when there is a close-up of their fingers, it is usually at the wrong section of the song, and usually for no longer than 2 seconds, and the camera does not sit still. In this Marx Brother's scene, they made it about the artists. Today, they make the focus of scenes about the show-off in the editing room and his camera theatrics. This is why scenes like this one will live on forever, whereas countless of today's movie scenes are soon forgotten. There is nothing wrong with using camera theatrics to add a kick when needed. But today's movies do so on steroids (for example, cars are made to screech their tires around nearly any basic turn, and coming to a stop, even routine stops -- the tire squealing is added in -- all of this artificial post-processing is a cancer on the realism of the scenes). Do your care tires squeal like that? So then why do they add it in to the movie scenes? This type of studio processing goes on, on an extreme level, in today's movies. We've become numb to it. We rarely get to just sit down and watch a scene, uncut with the camera standing still. So here, with this Marx Brother's scene, we have super talented artists, and we have them filmed so that we can watch their talent. We got the best of both worlds in this scene.
Ya know, the things things that made you laugh 60 years ago can still make you laugh today, even if you don't quite remember the first time you watched it.
and i forgot to say... prerecording was able for singer. they only move the lips.... but its impossible to play piano like this prerecording.... believe me, i'm an musician now for more than 35 years... And I bow my head in front of these unbelieveable artists.
I wouldn't call anything about this preternatural. It comes from an era where things like musical knowledge/ability and culture were encouraged instead of being cut from school due to lack of intelligence (or funding I suppose) on society's fault. This is amazing and I truly wish movies were still like this instead of about "actors" that can't really do anything besides act in 1 genre.
These are the kinds of movies that should be shown in today's schools. maybe then some kids will finally see what true talent really is. and maybe have a good laugh too. :)

They were beyond great musicians well before anything else. Since kids too.
I could not have said that better myself.
The Marx Brothers were multitalented artists. They grew roaming around the american theaters in the glorious times of the Vaudeville and when they begun to make movies they were experted artists.
After a lousy day at work, I just came home and watched this. Now I'm in a great mood. 2 minutes of Chico and Harpo is all it takes.
Ídem!...""🖐️👍
Incredible!!! It was impossible for those guys to miss a beat! Their musicianship alone stands as a tribute to their great genius ...then add comic timing!!! Unbelievable!!!
Love watching Chico and Harpo do their thing together. They were at their best when they were playing off of each other.

Marx Brothers were brilliant, they were top class, they will be remembered for ever
Simplicity in music and comedy , two great masters of both alone with their brothers just doing what they do best
This is not simple at all, what they are doing there!
the timing of this bit is fantastic, one of the absolute highlights of the film
Marx Brothers were amazing talent. Rest in Paradise All. 💙💚💛🙂👌🎵🎶
Two members of a family of geniuses.
They both look genuinely happy to be playing the piano together
This is my absolute favorite marx brothers song. Everytime I hear it, it gets stuck in my head for the rest of the day.
My God, there was no end to their talents. Incredible.
Breaks my heart that no one today can match this expression of sheer talent!
There are many who are as talented as the Marx Brothers were. The problem is that Hollywood doesn't want this in this day and age.
Incroyable, famille d’artistes.
Absolutely brilliant. What talent they all had. What a family. Fantastic.
Two VERY talented musicians having fun!

A testament to when Hollywood actually required talent.
NOW THERES SWEET F/A
Try watching one of the Blondie movies.
Oh please, there were just as many "stars" then that relied on looks more than talent.
@@laurab5750 thank you! The only thing people see nowadays are greatest hits. PLENTY of movies and actors sucked in Hollywood’s Golden Years. And just like today plenty of good actors were mediocre in lousy movies.
Evelyn Hugo had it all. Looks, talent, pageantry. It's too bad what they did to her though. I'm glad her story was finally told after she died.
I've watched these men and there movies when they showed them every new years even with all the other classics a time to remember these artist
I have read that Chico recorded his piano routines, audio only, and then matched his own playing on camera, sync. Quite a talent.
Knoxville Chico should not mime playing why not play it live??as on film he then would have to get it accurate
Simply marvelous!!!! This is the kind of music that one can relax with after a hard day's work.
I used to watch them in their movies, and also The You Bet Your Life TV show. But, never realized how talented they were on the piano... Marvilous.
I love Harpo So much so cute...and Chico is very talented. Thanks for posting
I love the way Chico slides on the keys. It's his signature move.
Love it, Love it. That so great. Fantastic both of them on Piano....
Amazing...
Absolutely brilliant. Musical and comedy genius!
unbelievable, each time i watch this,i am transfixed with their skills, musical abikity.
comic timing, they never cease to amaze me.
These movies will be played in film school for the next millennium. Greatness never goes out of style. Greatness IS style.
Impresionante...realmente impresionante..
Awesome. The both of them are so cool, I just loved it
Love how Harpo comes out of nowhere with the little bit of fancy playing...it sounds great!
Tbh Harpo is only actually playing beginners piano standard if you closely look
@@johndean4765Then just try his part, you'll be surprised
Wow! What a fun movie! Thanks Marx 's Bro!!!😊

I basically re learned some of my piano songs so i could use my hands like that! Chico is amazing! Only learned the right hand to songs. GOSH!
Pure geniuses at their craft. Nothing more to say
👍👌👏 Ingeniously played by geniuses.
I don't know whether it really was effortless, but they really did give the impression that it was. and what's more, their actual sensitive musicality is brilliant!

Brilliant & EXTREME talent. And FUNNY to boot!

The extras in the background aren’t acting. They are truly enjoying this scene.
1000 fois j ai écouté 😍😍😍😍

I love the Marx Brothers and I'm so glad to be able to view and listen
to their amazing talents via UA-cam ! Thank You.
what a great Number. Here is anything right timed. Even the Camera.
so nice to watch these talented brothers !!!
They shared the same brain, unreal!
My info came from IMDB and a biography of Groucho by Charlotte Brooks. Also, he was my grandfather's neighbor in California. Anyway, he was just a nice person and enjoyed life.
the women of that era were so beautiful
Simplemente sublime❤
Harmless fun. Why has this sort of entertainment disappeared?
"BRILLIANT" 💜
Brilliant what talent with performance and fun thrown, just great.

Talent with a capital T. Whether you say it in French, Chinese English or Martian.
I love that whatever the movie, when Chico plays, the girls come in flocks.

that is what i'd call working a crowd....outstanding
J'avais entendu parler d'eux par mon grand père.

Viva viva Groucho Chico Harpo!!!
Spontaneous unassuming genius.

To bad we didnt have talent like this today.

¡ Espectacular ! Muy cómico. También linda música.
Briliant, Marx Bro. Great talent

No one can make me laugh more than Harpo. True talent...
These are the kinds of movies that should be shown in today's schools. maybe then some kids will finally see what true talent really is. and maybe have a good laugh too. :)
I love watching the ladies’ reactions to them
pure brilliance!
I was born in the 21st century and they are my Jonas brothers.
The extras watching were amazed and delighted.
Thank you for the Great post
All you no talent, so-called entertainers of today, take note. This is how you entertain people. Real entertainment and real talent.
I laugh every time I watch this. Hilarious !
Rzbak, lots of talent in roaring twenties. mae west.
One can. But it is still great. If you have been reading Harpo speaks we have been reading the same book.
No comedy like this today, especially musical comedy. I only hope this survives the test of time. It seams to have so far, with a few.
Lol, what can I say about the Marx brothers except they were comic geniuses!!!
