  • Here is a video about playing in 3/4 time with several hi hat ostinatos that involve the splashing technique with your foot. I show you several examples of how to use these rhythms as well as how to play the splash technique itself. All of the examples are from my book Advanced Coordination for Drum Set and Hand Percussion. You can find more about it here rickdior.com/b...
You can also watch the playlist on this channel that is dedicated to the book here • Advanced Coordination ...

You always provide excellent education ideas and challenges for drummers to work on, not to mention fun stuff. Thanks.

The exercise you were playing at 11:34 sounds melodically like A Love Supreme Part 1.

Great lesson! Thank you. Does the size and weight of the hi-hats or quality of the pedal affect the speed and execution of this?

No it does not. I use all different types of hats from very heavy to paper thin. What does make a difference when you are learning the technique is the hi hat stand so you may want to go to the store and experiment with some different brands.
After you get it going the stand matters much less.

The Rick Also Waltzes! This level of independence; “it’s hard” is an understatement. Once you break the mental barrier, ie, detach your brain-hand-foot physically, you will be able to walk in two different directions at once. Lol. Teachers should challenge us. Oh boy do you do that.

I’m 69 & still going nutz about sticks . Used to always play a 5a . But now off the shelf the Keith Carlock or Buddy Rick. But they are are so different.
    I have to ask about hand size . I’m 5 , 9 “ not big hands . Does it matter? Omg 🤣

Man I just love this guy, tasteful and wildly musical playing. Big fan, maybe if I find myself in the states I'll go for a lesson or two.
