Dublin metro region is close to 2 million people and that is only going to grow. The fact there’s no metro going in will only ever become more expensive each day Dublin grows.

the "metro region" might be that, but not the metro line region. For example Dublin city population is 590k, of that 590k maybe 5-10% will be within walking distance or 0.5km cycle distance. By saying the Dublin metro region is close to 2 million people, you expect people from Shankill and Tallaght to use the metro. Why would they? 5-10 minutes waiting for a bus to town, a 30-40 minute ride, a 5-10 minute wait for the metro, and a 15 minute ride to the airport. All in it will be quicker to just hop on the airport bus and save yourself 5-10 minutes at least. I did the math, and even from Donnybrook it will be quicker by about a minute to get the bus straight to airport, by the time you get out to stillorgan that number moves to about 15 minutes quicker to just get bus... I also have some sad news for you, the population inside the city is not growing at a signifigant rate because they are not building up, so the population outside the metro zone is going to grow and grow and grow while billions is spent on the metro zone area for 500k people.
Our metro region is all suburbs of houses. It makes zero sense to put in train lines or subways to these places. Maybe decades from now when all the apartments are built it might make sense. Right now, dont waste my tax money!
Don't worry everybody! "the line from the city centre to the airport is a government priority and will be open by 2007" (Minister of Transport, Séamus Brennan, 2002) sigh............

Waffle. Ireland is one of the best off countries on earth. Ireland WAS a poor country until the 1990s, symbolised by an iconic Economist cover. From the 1990s onwards we built an entire motorway network, Port Tunnel and two Luas lines (as well as regenerating our cities). This was a major catchup period with our European peers, due to finances of the country post independence. This stopped during the crash. Now Ireland is getting back to is as they have more money. In terms of building, we are constructing the most houses in Europe the last couple of years. Our Metro and DART projects are ambitious.
It's nearly here. Just 10 more years of environmental studies 10 years of planning... 15 years of planning appeals More environmental studies And 20 years of building ...can't wait And don't forget delays due to protesters

So sad that the nation just cannot build enough infrastructure, on time, at reasonable cost. The railway system, except for the Luas, has not been added to since independence. Any lone crank with an objection, can stop any progress. Mad, really.
I don't even think it's objections, it's parties saying "oh we'll have this done before the next GE" and then they never do it, Navan has been getting this whole spiel for the past 30 maybe 40 years, so I don't think it's just a problem in Dublin, Navan does need a rail line as the morning and evening commute is murderous
Well to be fair there hasnt really been a need to expand the rail system since independence infact the rail system was probally far to large when we got independence leading to alot of it being shut which is now seen as bad as the areas it once served were rural then are now suburban and badly need rail links.
Objections are a large part of it. Due to our common law system anyone can just throw a spanner in the works and cause massive delays and cost over runs. You will note Italy and Spain churn out metros and other projects like there’s no tomorrow. They have a civil law system and all the expertise within their countries. That said the Dublin metro had planning permission in place and was ready to go back in 2011. That represented about a decade of work to get it to that point. The crash came and FG were so desperate to get into government for the first time in ages. Leo Varadkar said that if elected that the metro would go ahead. A few months later he became the actual transport minister and cancelled it. Breathtaking really. It was forecast to cost€3.5bn then with €0.5bn pledged from the European investment fund. Due to that decision to cancel we are effectively looking at a 20 year delay and trebling of the cost. How poor can your leadership and foresight be to let that happen?
I am from the UK and travel to Dublin frequently for work. The new metro will massively improve the city. It is so frustrating having to get a taxi to and from the airport. The traffic in Dublin is also insane. I hope this opens as quickly as possible.
@@extrude22You complain about having to get a taxi. When it is pointed out that there is a bus, an express limited stop bus at that, you say that you dont have time. If you are going for work are you on an expense account so why worry about taking a taxi.

One slight positive re costs is looking at the construction of the Shinkansen in Japan, it went way over budget 50 years ago. But who ever cares to remember that anymore? Its built and fantastic and paid itself back immensely
Indeed. Not that cost is meaningless, but getting shit built well and quickly are the highest priorities, there are countless social benefits for society for decades, if not centuries, beyond the pricetag.

Its a strategic interest for Dublin to expand it's public transportation system, some train networks in Europe are heavily subsidised by the state (eg France) as they recognise mobility to be a major economic asset, but yeah it does cost a lot of money to develop and maintain.

The transportation system in our country is just a complete joke. Can’t even get a train from Dublin to Waterford anytime after 9pm. Have to rely on private bus companies and even at that some of them don’t have another scheduled bus until 12.05 am ! What’s a tourist meant to do
I heard a Japanese company offered to build a metro in the early 90s if they got the ticket fees for 30 years but the politicians declined. It might have been a controversial decision but it would have got the thing started.
That would have been totally illegal, you cannot grant the tender to somebody who is effectively bribing you like that, the tender has to be put out to auction. Still, it would have been nice…
The Japanese were finishing work in the UK, they had all the machinery/workers/expertise ready to go but they would not engage in the brown envelope game so the Irish government would not deal with them
All rail projects go up in price, because all countries have inflation and take ages between asking for a quote and getting the thing finished. The sooner the Irish government get the Dublin metro started, the sooner it will be open and taking traffic off of the roads. One way that the Republic of Ireland can make it's transport systems cheaper is to ask each city in the Republic to come up with a hundred year plan for expansion, identify the transport corridors and then buy the land for those corridors now. That way if Cork, Limerick and Galway are going to get economic development and new suburbs, to build up the profitability of those cities the construction of houses can be done in such a way that works in tandem with new metro systems, instead of being done in a way that blocks the corridors of new metro systems.
We also need to start doing a lot more transit oriented development, especially in cuties other than Dublin Almost all new suburbs in Ireland outside Dublin with a few exceptions in Limerick are entirely car dependent
If you build a metro building new suburbs is idiotic, you need to build up in the city. London didnt tell everyone to go live in the country side, the metro is for londoners. Dublin city is not a population of 1 million, you can google it, its 500k, rennes metro area is larger than Dublin city by about 200k people, and their B line just finished carries 29 million people a year. But Dublin city with a population less, is going to carry 60 million? This article is forgetting to tell you that rennes, barca, london all built up increasing population density. Ireland banned it. Its true, the dublin greater area is 2 million people, and if you count surrounding counties to Dublin city, like South County Dublin, County Fingal, and County DL/Rathdown you can get up to 1 million people in that area. But this metro doesnt service any of them counties does it, you expect them people to travel into the city to use it? Metros only every make sense for cities increasing population density, not cities limiting or decreasing it by allowing people to work from home.
@@geroutathat Funny since it would go all the way to Cherrywood, Dublin doesn't grow, because no one cares about it especially the government. Also no direct line to the airport from the city centre is laughable really for a capital city of its calibre. Also population is irrelevant when smaller cities in Spain have their own metro line growth or not.

I live in Madrid. We started our Metro network in 1919 and now has 295 kilometres and 302 stations. Our Line 8 to the airport arrived first in 1998. Later suburban rail mass transit (200 metres trains which can carry 4000 people each) arrived to International Terminal 4 in 2011. Now we're building HSR (High Speed Rail) to the airport and a 2nd subway extension of Line 5 to Domestic Terminals 1-3, both due for 2027. There's also an internal *free* automatic People Mover that connects the 2 kilometres between both terminals.
The Dublin Metro was supposed to go all the way south to Cherrywood, possibly Bray, along the LUAS line. A small, well-funded and well-connected group of older NIMBYS in Milltown & Ranelagh got a high court injunction AGAINST the metro going all the way out of the city as it would mean a level crossing would be permanently down/locked and they'd have to drive 2 minutes around it.
Hi Ronan, thanks for watching and commenting. These types of comments are what gets me up motivated each day. Keep your eye out for more videos from this channel in the future! 👍
we do, there is no way it takes an hour to get to the city center on bus, when he said it can take up to an hour, he meant some random specific point not serviced by a bus. If all you care about is hitting the city center, then you can literally hop on nearly any waiting bus, its very small waiting time... If it takes you an hour to get to the city by bus now to the specific point, then a metro wont fix that, it will be 25 mins by metro then another bus trip or walk across the city or taxi ride, right? You might be waiting 30 minutes for the bus alone? Only 500k live in the city, not a million. Now lets put it in perspective, the B line in rennes services 29 million people a year in a metro area of 700k people, Dublin wants to carry, double that, 60 million on one train line a year, in a city with 500k population. Dublin metro only makes sense if you allow people to build up, thus allow the population of the city to grow.
@@geroutathat when he said it takes one hour by bus, I think he meant the public transport buses. The 41 bus takes 56 minutes to get to O'Connell street. There are private coaches that get there in half the time but they cost more money as well.
People talk about cost but the road system costs an enormous amount of money to maintain and it's never taken seriously to stop maintenance of them, it's just a different standard for cars 😤
The one MAJOR problem with Ireland's development is a lack of adequate leadership and motivation. I constantly see other EU countries greenlight large and expensive projects with a successful endings, while Ireland can't build something as simple as a hospital building... I'd say the only large scale civil project successfully completed by Ireland was our motorway system. Everything else in this country is just wishful thinking.
I really hope they finally start building the metro system this year (2025). It's unbelievable that Ireland doesn't have a metro yet; traffic in Dublin is shocking, but other major towns and cities, such as Galway, are not far behind. I lived in both Dublin and Galway, and it was challenging getting home from work due to the traffic. If Ireland had a decent public transport link, we wouldn't depend so much on cars. I now live in Roscommon, the county town, and although we have a train station, there is no bus station, which is also unbelievable.
Thanks very much. Brian was an excellent guest. I aim to put in as much production value as possible, even if I am a one man team! However, comments like this make it all worth it.
While you do mention this, It’s worth highlighting that Dublin Airport not only lacks a metro connection, but any rail connection at all. The existing Dart line is only ~4km from the airport with nothing but greenfield separating them. Even worse is that not a single airport on the island has a rail connection. This fact is actually recognised but complete governmental incompetence has stagnated any action. We can expect much the same from the next government.
There have also been talks of building a spur to the airport for the DART. I’m thinking the airport would be the perfect transport hub for the DART, Luas and MetroLink.
While I agree, you really need to address the capacity constraints on the Dublin Loop first. Adding even more trains (in Malahide?) would seriously hamper the already questionable reliability for trains from Belfast, Dundalk and Sligo without extra tracks and some flyovers. But in itself, it would be very useful to have a spur to the Airport. And if I'm really dreaming, a HS line from Belfast along the M1 through Dublin Airport and on to Cork...
politcians love to brag about how rich Ireland is yet our public transport is third world quality, a national rail service and no onboard catering is shocking
I think we might actually get this under construction, there are a number of spots around Dublin now where they seem to be doing some sort of preliminary ground investigation work. They have Metrolink on the hoarding
Fascinating insight. Even to a resident. Living in the areas served by Dart and Luas it’s amazing how well served the wealthy areas are. The green line south side in particular is great. The experience for northern and western commuters by contrast is calamitous. I do hope the Metro Infrastructure bucks this trend, IF it happens!
Bull. I get a taxi from the airport to fairview for €25. Thats two of us, bags carried for us door to door. Maybe you are going far Southside into the suburbs. Not the city centre.
As a foreigner living in Dublin, I feel like living in America. No medical protection (even you have private insurance but the money you have to pay for is insane!) poor public transportation.
Interesting point of view yet not quite correct, I've worked with a lot of Americans in Dublin and pretty much all of them find Dublin's public transport way superior to the US, New York, San Francisco and Chicago are maybe the only places in the US where they'd have better transit.
I hope it gets built! The longer it's delayed, the more it will cost. Metros are the most efficient way to move the most amount of people around a city. Speaking of cities without rail links to their airport, Melbourne is now at 5 million people and still has no airport line. Unlike Sydney, Brisbane and Perth.
Dublin needs a metro, the Dart tunnel, and to upzone. Dublin has awfully low density compared to any other capital, and if the population keeps growing, irish cities and towns will keep sprawling until we barely have any greenery.
The Dublin urban area is larger than Barcelona's yet we have much fewer people in it. Increased population density should go hand In hand with the upgraded transit system.
On a note relating to centralised and decentralised spending; probably one of the main reasons as to why so many new urban train lines are being built in Australian cities is because the state governments are able to fund and build them rather than Canberra making all the decisions. Also, public transport is funded at the state level, rather the city level like you find in the USA.
There was land purchased by CIE from Clongriffen to Dublin Airport. A Spur line was laid from Howth junction. The land is Prohibited from building infrastructure. Although there are houses on both sides. 🇮🇪🇪🇺
I think that map only shows full metros that don't have level crossings, street running or leave the built-up area. It didn't include the 15 Stadtbahn networks in German cities either.
Spain already has an extensive industry around heavy transportation so it's much easier - and cheaper - to build there. Ireland is literally starting from scratch with no experience or expertise whatsoever.
Imo, along with the overly centralised govt., we also have a reliance on private contracts to do the work. These are profit driven leading to massive waste in funds. Ireland needs national bodies responsible for construction of public transit, housing, and other infrastructure.
0:55 - Granada in Southern Spain also has a metro line, and only 250.000 inhabitants (though over 500.000 with the metropolitan area, which is in part what the city's metro wants to integrate with the center).
NO NO NO. This metro project will be a disaster for Dublin’s taxpayers and motorists like me self. It will also cause crime to spread to calmer neighborhoods and increase criminals mobility within the city. A useless project to be frank, I will not be using the metro so why pay for it? In my opinion busses could have been prioritized and increasing the number of parking spots in central Dublin - as well as widening roads to decrease congestion for normal people that actually need the car to survive. And for what? To decrease the time for holiday-goers to Tenerife to save a few minutes to the airport???
Metro will never see the light of day .....Unless we can line the pockets of greedy politicians. The children's hospital that now costs more than the Burgh Caliph, the tallest building in the world. If this sees the light of day it will be the biggest cost per mile of any other construction job in the world. On the bright side it will get a security headquarters that cost's 1.2 billion to build and will probably be based in Leitrim. There is no other country in the world outside of Africa that can waste money on the level of the Irish government. Ah well at least we always vote them back in..
TBF the guys building the hospital probably had better pay & conditions than the ones building the Burj... But probably examine the JLX and Crossrail projects before going ahead .
Sure, metro system would be great but it is expensive to build and long term, Dublin is a very specific type of European city, it is more like amalgamation of several neighborhoods (in local lingo villages); the strict city centre is quite small as European capitals go. Dublin has reasonable railway system, tram and very unreasonable bus system. I would rather start with their improvements - most of the time much cheaper and would definitely solve many of the current issues much quicker than a metro system. Dublin15 (including once upon a time the largest European shopping centre Blanchardstown SC) is severely underserved by a public transport. Centralization of a bus system - most of the connections go through or to the city centre extending travel times from one end of the city to the other. All of this causes overreliance on private cars. You can literally see planes taking off from your windows but often the only viable option to get to the airport is by taxi or private car. I think Dublin could look at the systems like Hannover where essentially tram system is travelling underground in the city centre, emerging to the surface in the suburbs and less densely overbuild areas.
A word to the designers , the tunnel must be big enough for the train to pass through . Admittedly a "You must be less than this tall to ride the train" notice would work too.
Ironically when Dublin Airport T1 was under construction in the 1970s they were supposed to have a metro at the airport (and was built) but for some reason it was cancelled (and never opened) and the site is now a check in area.
My dream still hasn't come true,I went to London 5yr ago and the only thing I loved about it was the underground mainly because of the efficiency and luxury of saying there was a metro, but Dublin really needs one.
I’ve lived in North County Dublin my whole life. They’ve been talking about developing a Metro and other forms of Rail for 30 years. It’s much needed. Having said, that there are much more fundamental problems going on right now in this country that need fixing before the government spends billions and goes hundreds of millions over budget on a new metro project, in my humble opinion.
Mobility is fundamental IMO, it's crucial for future economic development, better transport will absolutely help with density housing much further out from the city centre and hopefully alleviate the horrid "commuter belt" living that so many have to endure right now.
Thanks for the video. I’ve been looking on Internet for ages more about the Irish politics and Irish government to finally understand why Planning and Development ( for any kind of infrastructure ) are so slow. You have confirmed that as Ireland has a centralised government, everything that the local authorities want to do, needs to be approved by the parliament ( as far as I understood) I hope the new government coalition can finally remove all the knots that stop Ireland taking forward crucial projects like a Metro Line and house planning
Thanks for your comment! I recommend checking out Polysee on UA-cam for more info on Irish government, planning, and policy decisions. The team there are making awesome vids!
The metro is another FF FG disaster, over 30 years waiting 300 million spent on consultants, it will take another ten years and will be 10 times overpriced, The better option would be a Luas to the airport and swords, could be built within a year at a fraction of the price, crazy the Luas never was considered to the airport.
@@samnicholson5051 No you dont track and rail is super cheap, the roads are already there, the Luas 2 lines were built in less than a year, tunneling is vastly more expensive by multiples of hundreds, every inch of a tunnel has to be walled drilled and reinforced and takes years to complete!
@ Its already in use in Dublin! havent you noticed? The luas line to the airport and sword would be only 5 miles, light rail works perfect in small cities like Dublin !
The fact that DART underground (which should have been built first) and DART+ (which will connect with the Underground) are not mentioned are serious omissions from this video.
Hi Michael, thanks for your comment. There was a lot of information to uncover, so my focus was on the failed MetroNorth project, comparisons with other European cities, and then the new MetroLink. But thanks for offering more context to this whole saga.
@@michaeloreilly657 the DART underground has zero chance of ever happening and was effectively superseded by the bungled and tortoise like Luas cross city line 🤡
Great video I was wondering this what was happening with this. Belfast is the same we have so much traffic on the roads I think a metro system would be well received but sadly no sign of one being planned.
I think the lack of devolved power to the city governments is the most under appreciated issue for things like the metro. I’m glad to see it highlighted. Even Cork could finally get a tram if the city council could act on its own.
Probably not ...if I understand the plan for now is to wrap up the consultations and go ahead with archeological digs on the sites of the proposed metro.
Another thing to consider is that people from rural Ireland will feel that Dublin will get everything and the rest of us will be neglected (as usual) especially if it’s going to cost billions. The miserable government in Ireland will probably divert funds from rural projects (like repairing the roads) to this.
There are plans for trams in Cork and Galway, but I do think Cork could probably do with a metro too. Same with Belfast given that it’s Northern Ireland’s capital.
@ In Cork, they’re planning to electrify the line from Middleton and Cobh to Mallow, build a 6th platform at Cork Kent and reopen stations between Mallow and Middleton. I think they’re building a second line from Cobh Junction to Middleton
DART was to be all part of a subway system and linked in with rapid transit buses. The present plan is misguided and planned for the wrong corridor from the airport. It should go through the Drumcondra corridor and should have been built in conjunction with the Dublin Port tunnel.
@@Runboyrun89 the link with Glasnevin was to be at Cross Guns and the link to Drumcondra was to be Clonliffe so you've got that wrong. If you know what it's about, tell us whom thought of the acronym DART?
We should try get Spanish or Italian engineering companies to build it. Keep the stations simple. No opulence like the childrens hospital or T2 Dublin airport.
Loved your comment about centralized vs. decentralized decision making. My fear is that funding will require a quid pro quo with the Healy-Rae's of this world. You can have your metro if Kilgarvan gets a new [fill-in-the-blank]. Hope I'm wrong.
Fantastic video. As someone who lives in Dublin, I don’t believe that man for a second that the metro will arrive every 90 seconds. 😂 And maybe they can use all those Apple back taxes to catch up on public transport. It’s an embarrassment currently - should’ve been done years ago.
I've been in smaller cities which still have 2 or 3 metro lines. I've been in much poorer countries on the other some of the world which still have metro lines. In my last job in Dublin more than a decade ago, the government was talking about metro surveys and plans and the like - still Nothing. It's a spectacular public transport failing on the authorities' part, feeding into failing to make the city Greener, more accessible, and more affordable.
9,5 billion will eventually cost 62 billion and will take 50 years to build… Just like the children’s hospital. First muted in 1992 , today in 2025 , still waiting.
As far as I know cost of an underground metro is 100 million dollars per km including vehicles. 9⅖ euro billion could built 80 km metro. Dublin is talking only 20 km😮. Forgot to mention, very nice video 😊.
Think back just a little to the Dublin port tunnel, 4.5km long. Problems with leaks due to gound conditions during construction, built undersized for super trucks, massively over budget and delayed. Now think of 10s and 100s of kms of metro tunnels, under roads, rivers, canals, houses and commercial buildings. The metro would be great to have but will be a disaster if they ever go ahead
Is it vested interests that's stalling this Metro? Private bus companies, Taxi firms, etc. In this country of "Pass the brown envelopes around!" It wouldn't surprise me. My grandson is 9 in March, and he will eligible for the free travel before the first Metro train takes off.
Its a combination of factors...lack of political will to prioritise the project, NIMBYsm, awful planning and legal system, funding, lack of local expertise, etc...
An Underground Railway is by far the most expensive way you could possibly imagine to improve traffic flow in Dublin. Why not build overpasses for several new Luas Tram lines and/or DART lines to pass overhead? Innovation anybody? The NIMBYs would not like that of course.
Luas doesn't have the capacity and is too slow DART only touches the core of the city. You need something to bring many people all at once and fast to town. You need a metro. That said, it should not be an excuse to not invest in further expansion of Luas and the DART, too, they are useful, too.
Actually going the tunnel method rather than cut and cover may give certainty of costs . True it is technically more costly in direct costs but the main costs it saves are the indirect costs when you interface with the public
The map you showed didn't even include all the premetros and stadtbahns. Such underground networks aren't usually included on lists of metros, because they're actually parts of tram networks, but they have underground stations that look exactly like a metro, accessed by escalators and lifts, but with trams driving through them instead of trains. If you're only travelling through the inner parts of town, it's pretty much a metro. Germany has about 15 cities with such a network in addition to the 4 regular metros on the map you showed.
yes - i never figured out why the luas wasn't built like a stadtbahn. its pretty wild to me that south of charlemont, and going towards broomebridge, the green luas is on a mostly separated alignment and goes pretty fast (kindof like a metro), but then in the city center it just grinds to a halt
@@-Osiris- but they're still examples of cities, mostly smaller than Dublin, that were able to afford to build a lot of rail tunnels full of underground stations under their city centres. That part is equally expensive to build, whether or not the vehicles then drive up a ramp and continue down the road as a tram at the end of the tunnel. They're usually designed to later be converted into a full metro anyway.
It's like that because the parts between Broombridge to Broadstone and Harcourt Street to Sandford (and the end of the line at Brides Glen) were built on old clsoed rail lines.
I am from India and when I came to Dublin I missed the Metro trains back in India so much, the public Transpiration is same as the weather here. It feels like Ireland achieved "developed country" status in early 80-90s and hasn't developed since then. Everything is Outdated and inconvenient . a country with dying population does really need development is what people ask.
Tbf many of Dublin airport's passengers are stopping only for a layover. The local traffic is likely comparable to Glasgow which has the same population as Dublin and also lacks a rail connection to the airport. Still, this rail link doesn't need to be a metro, it could be a new Luas line similar to Edinburgh or Manchester.
It's embarrassing that we don't have a Metro. I've been to countries that have a fraction of the national budget that Ireland has and yet we can't seem to build infrastructure to serve the people. We need to streamline the planning process so you don't have frivolous lawsuits holding up capital projects. I think new legislation is in the works to do just that.
I can't see it ever happening myself. They'll probably just take the cheaper options of extending the DART line from Clongriffin to the airport, as well as a spur off the planned Finglas Luas.
We are a backward country with backward minds running the show when it comes to transportation networks and infrastructure, it’s embarrassing!. Other countries are just so much better at doing it than us. If it’s gonna cost too much to build a metro, then build a Luas line from Dublin City to Swords and stopping at the airport, why this hasn’t been done by now is baffling.
Well with the route ruled out, it seems like construction should begin this year or within a few, but if the government keeps favouring roads over trains, I don’t know. I hope it does begin construction soon.
Having a metro is always a good investment for a city, even for a smaller one. But i've been to Dublin and the light rail and the trains lines going throught the city should be improved first. I remember exploring the city at night and for someone who lives in Paris, It was easy traveling from the center to Drumcondra where my hotel was just using the train. Is that really necessary to build a metro before improving the existing lines (buses, trains etc...). I feel like Dublin should make more lanes for buses and light rails and expending the frequency of trains before doing that. But it's just my opinion, what do you think if you live in Dublin ?
I watched a documentary last year about a dam that was built in Austria. I couldn't believe how quickly they built it and with such a small budget. We just dont have that kind of skill or ambition in ireland. We're so far behind how other countries think.

the "metro region" might be that, but not the metro line region.
We may get Fianna Fáil and Fine Gail out of power and put in a political party that makes sense for the Irish people
I've been living in Ireland for 10 years and the construction of the Metro has been promised since I arrived.

@oisinmtom Its also down to the reliance on cars that was happening that caused these stations to shut. Hindsight I guess
@jmo8934 Real shame. We need ppl with long term vision not short term tactical approaches.

Do you want a metro line to be built or not?

Growing up I always thought not having a metro was the norm, only when I started travelling did I realise how behind Dublin is in this aspect
Very well put together and presented, Keep up the good work.

The transportation system in our country is just a complete joke. Can’t even get a train from Dublin to Waterford anytime after 9pm. Have to rely on private bus companies and even at that some of them don’t have another scheduled bus until 12.05 am ! What’s a tourist meant to do
Yeah, Then theres people who need to commute daily having to deal with that bs
I heard a Japanese company offered to build a metro in the early 90s if they got the ticket fees for 30 years but the politicians declined. It might have been a controversial decision but it would have got the thing started.
That would have been totally illegal, you cannot grant the tender to somebody who is effectively bribing you like that, the tender has to be put out to auction.
Still, it would have been nice…

@@jayuppercase3398 That's the story I heard.
We also need to start doing a lot more transit oriented development, especially in cuties other than Dublin
Almost all new suburbs in Ireland outside Dublin with a few exceptions in Limerick are entirely car dependent
🤞 please TFI. PLEASE 🙏 Now is the time.
The green line luas was at capacity the day it opened. A metro line should have been what was built from the very beginning.

In Bucharest we extended our metro system 10 kilometres, and 12 stations in 8 years only.

As an Irish man It’s actually embarrassing how we haven’t an efficient way to get from the city to the airport and back.
we do, there is no way it takes an hour to get to the city center on bus, when he said it can take up to an hour, he meant some random specific point not serviced by a bus.
Great job Thomas… just came across your channel. Subscribed!
They can't even build a hospital so I don't have any hope they will build a Metro any time soon.
Hopefully, they can learn from the mistakes from Children's Hospital fiasco!
@@thomasblade1 They won't learn because there isn't any accountability in this country.
Bam,Bam,Bam........No more....give it to Sisk or HeagertysThey deliver
Great work man, loved the video!
Thanks very much. Brian was an excellent guest. I aim to put in as much production value as possible, even if I am a one man team! However, comments like this make it all worth it.
Great video man, really informative. Can’t wait to see more
It does not matter how much it will cost it will be worth it in the long run NO MATTER the costs.
Just use the money Apple owes the country and call it the apple train
@Orsch1 true thats why they had a big bufget surplus last year
While you do mention this, It’s worth highlighting that Dublin Airport not only lacks a metro connection, but any rail connection at all.
@@shutup2751 NTM all the homeless people in Dublin.
I bet you're fun at parties, wow.
I think we might actually get this under construction, there are a number of spots around Dublin now where they seem to be doing some sort of preliminary ground investigation work. They have Metrolink on the hoarding
I was supposed to be 16 when Metrolink was to be completed. Now I’ll be 37 if it is follows the current timeline
Taxi from T1 into town cost €50-60 nowadays
Yes, it was hard to get an official figure as the fares could fluctuate, so 35 was at the upper end of an average.
Irish public hospitals are pretty much free also ...
0:55 this map is now outdated because Thessaloniki has opened their first metro line recently
Dublin needs a metro, the
Dart tunnel, and to upzone.
€350,000 for a bike rack. €2,240,000,000 for an unfinished hospital. Good luck. The Corruption is laughable
Great video! Traffic in Dublin is crazy during weekdays (M-50 included ofc), a metro system would help a lot!
There was land purchased by CIE from Clongriffen to Dublin Airport.
A Spur line was laid from Howth junction.
The land is Prohibited from building infrastructure. Although there are houses on both sides.

The Liverpool Merseyrail seems to be missing from the map you used. This has all the aspects of an RER - style metro, including underground stations.
Thanks for pointing that out!
Yep, as someone from Manchester I'm rather jealous of Liverpool's system. A few of their Victorian pubs also
I think that map only shows full metros that don't have level crossings, street running or leave the built-up area. It didn't include the 15 Stadtbahn networks in German cities either.
But it falls short of going to the airport by only going to south parkway so it doesn't constitute a metro serving the airport.
@@liamo8932 Same.
In south Spain we have metro also in Malaga and Granada (but they are only partially underground)
You might need to rewrite those contracts, then, so higher costs come at least partially from the bidder to avoid underbidding...
much poorer counties achive metro infrastructure, its shame Ireland does not have metro.
Did you fly in and out of Dublin just for the intro shot? 😂 Good vid!
0:55 - Granada in Southern Spain also has a metro line, and only 250.000 inhabitants (though over 500.000 with the metropolitan area, which is in part what the city's metro wants to integrate with the center).
Spain has expertise with building and maintaining metro and light rail systems, it's a fair bit easier to develop there than in Ireland
@@g-man4744 Just pointing out that it´s missing on the map.
Its a pity that Dublin's metro is taking so long but at least we have the Dart+ project coming soon.
Blame the government for being so anti-rail. I wonder if we’ve really learned anything from the railway axe that occurred in the 1950s and 60s.
The Burj Khalifa isn't even that high up the list, some guys house in Mumbai cost more than the Children's hospital.
Burj Khalifa doesn't even have access to sewer system...and was built with slave labour, you can't compare anything to Dubai's construction projects.
@@g-man4744 That must be one hell of a septic tank
To be fair now metro systems don't usually "see the light of day" even when they're finished 😭
Great video !!
Cheers Nick!
Should Ireland consider building a new city? Given the housing demand, would building from scratch be the most economical option?
Yeah, they might as well given how many homeless people are living in Dublin right now.
Just building ANY housing would be good
That would cost many multiples of just building a proper transportation system and expand on the existing services already in Dublin.
@@g-man4744 Sometimes you just need a new home.
First time watching ya, good video, I liked it.
Thanks mate!
Is this video from 50 years in the future? Much metro, so wow!
So a metro system then.
no metro and no rail link to our busiest airport, public transport is shockingly poor in Ireland and politicians boast about how rich we are
A word to the designers , the tunnel must be big enough for the train to pass through .
Admittedly a "You must be less than this tall to ride the train" notice would work too.
Are you still up from the night before talking waffle
The government should definitely hire your services!
Great video and very informative 👏👏
Cheers Dom!
Ironically when Dublin Airport T1 was under construction in the 1970s they were supposed to have a metro at the airport (and was built) but for some reason it was cancelled (and never opened) and the site is now a check in area.
Great content
My dream still hasn't come true,I went to London 5yr ago and the only thing I loved about it was the underground mainly because of the efficiency and luxury of saying there was a metro, but Dublin really needs one.
Plus the trains, be nice too see what trains dublin will come up with design and colour scheme wise.
ya that would also be a good thing to think about cause they'd need to differentiate it from the rest
Do you mean corruption, public health care, public education, water infrastructure, traffic infrastructure, or any other kind of infrastructure?
Mobility is fundamental IMO, it's crucial for future economic development, better transport will absolutely help with density housing much further out from the city centre and hopefully alleviate the horrid "commuter belt" living that so many have to endure right now.
8:08 worth mentioning the Drumm battery "accumulator" trains as well.
Thanks for the video.
I’ve been looking on Internet for ages more about the Irish politics and Irish government to finally understand why Planning and Development ( for any kind of infrastructure ) are so slow.
You have confirmed that as Ireland has a centralised government, everything that the local authorities want to do, needs to be approved by the parliament ( as far as I understood)
I hope the new government coalition can finally remove all the knots that stop Ireland taking forward crucial projects like a Metro Line and house planning
And where would this luas run? There's no road or greenway suitable, it would only make traffic even worse.
No. Trams are not designed for long distance high capacity passenger-carrying. Are you crazy?
You'd still have to build most of the same infrastructure for a decent LUAS connection.
They should be planning additional lines NOW prior to commencing the first one. Full connectivity for Dublin City as a whole.
Great video man
Cheers Fintan. Thanks for all your support.
The fact that DART underground (which should have been built first) and DART+ (which will connect with the Underground) are not mentioned are serious omissions from this video.
Cuz the DART underground is never gonna happen 👺
Hi Michael, thanks for your comment. There was a lot of information to uncover, so my focus was on the failed MetroNorth project, comparisons with other European cities, and then the new MetroLink. But thanks for offering more context to this whole saga.
@@michaeloreilly657 the DART underground has zero chance of ever happening and was effectively superseded by the bungled and tortoise like Luas cross city line 🤡
It's a rule of the internet that when a video uses a question mark in its title, the answer is no. This has never been more true than in this case
This 100%. The political make-up of the State is causing a lot of these issues and won't be solved without major reforms.
Maybe I'm too cynical, but i dont believe construction will start this year.
@ It would be nice to have a metro in Cork especially from the train station to the city centre and onwards to Cork Airport and Ringaskiddy Port
DART was to be all part of a subway system and linked in with rapid transit buses. The present plan is misguided and planned for the wrong corridor from the airport. It should go through the Drumcondra corridor and should have been built in conjunction with the Dublin Port tunnel.
@@PaulAherne-z3t no it isn’t. The link with Cross Guns / Glasnevin DARTs will be invaluable. Not possible at Drumcondra.
@@Runboyrun89 the link with Glasnevin was to be at Cross Guns and the link to Drumcondra was to be Clonliffe so you've got that wrong. If you know what it's about, tell us whom thought of the acronym DART?
Great looking forward to it. Mind you I’m 40 so I’ll probably never see it.
Belfast International Airport has train tracks, but no trains run to it .The line is closed and is only used for driver training
We should try get Spanish or Italian engineering companies to build it. Keep the stations simple. No opulence like the childrens hospital or T2 Dublin airport.
We have a New Zealander running the whole project. He is meant to be one of the best in the world.
Loved your comment about centralized vs. decentralized decision making. My fear is that funding will require a quid pro quo with the Healy-Rae's of this world. You can have your metro if Kilgarvan gets a new [fill-in-the-blank]. Hope I'm wrong.
Indeed, Gerry. Limerick's recent move for more autonomy with a directly elected mayor will be quite interesting. Let's see how it works out for them.
First muted in 1992 , today in 2025 , still waiting.
i agree and I feel this video will age badly. and they would start building for another couple of decades.
As far as I know cost of an underground metro is 100 million dollars per km including vehicles. 9⅖ euro billion could built 80 km metro. Dublin is talking only 20 km😮. Forgot to mention, very nice video 😊.
The cost of not doing it is higher than the cost of doing it. It's durable infrastructure!
The government hasn’t really learned much from the closure of the Harcourt Street line 65 years later has it?
Tech capital? People don't have bloody houses, tech capital my arse
Light rail is very different from fully segregated high capacity heavy rail
@@-Osiris- but they're still examples of cities, mostly smaller than Dublin, that were able to afford to build a lot of rail tunnels full of underground stations under their city centres. That part is equally expensive to build, whether or not the vehicles then drive up a ramp and continue down the road as a tram at the end of the tunnel. They're usually designed to later be converted into a full metro anyway.
It's like that because the parts between Broombridge to Broadstone and Harcourt Street to Sandford (and the end of the line at Brides Glen) were built on old clsoed rail lines.
@lazrseagull54 yeah, Düsseldorf is a good example.
Rail link to Dublin airport can be completed in 2-3 years. For Metro, we will be waiting 10 years easily in this country.
There's not a word about them starting a rail link to the airport anytime soon, 50 years would be more accurate for the metro
Keep in mind we are talking about one line... lisbon has I think 3 or 4 lines, madrid 9 or something
Do you think Cork should have metros instead of Luas?
