Despite all the differences in their upbringings, customs, religions and their own-like fire to water- characters: I honestly believe theirs was one of the purest, truest, most devoted and soul deep romantic love I've ever seen on screen.
Yes. Many warriors in history had a special friend and often they were lovers. Maybe one day the public will be able to take the truth that life was brutal and short back then .It was kind of a hint which I liked.
One of the funniest moments between them was when Athelstan told Ragnar that he was born again, and Ragnar, confused, asked him, "Like a baby?" The way Ragnar asked it always cracks me up. 😄

Ragnar loved him because out of all people around him Athelstan was genuine, someone that was a complete stranger. Ragnar was drowning from the fear of betrayal and Athelstan was his light in the dark.

Ragnar’s interaction with Athelstan was always so wholesome. I thought it was so deep how open Ragnar was, unlike anyone else, to learn from Athelstan’s faith. When they said the Lords Prayer together. When Athelstan came in a mirage to wash Ragnar’s feet as a moral to show mercy. The fact that in the darkness of confusion and betrayal Athelstan was Ragnar’s only light. I loved that so much. It hurt immensely to see Ragnar’s heartbreak when Athelstan died. And it hurt even more when Ragnar died with Athelstan’s death on his conscience. My only hope is that the bit of Christianity that Ragnar clinged to for the sake of seeing his friend in the afterlife was not in vain.
The Lord is Willing and Able.. Love those without courage, and strength, for theirs is the kingdom in heaven.

Floki did it out of pure jealousy. It was like he loves Ragnar but Ragnar loves Athelstan. Kind of a love triangle. He wasn't getting the attention he needed from Ragnar and left replaced by Athelstan. He did it only because he wanted back Ragnar, his Ragnar.

Omg rewatching this makes me realize how much Alfred and Ubbe look like Athelstan and Ragnar. Their expressions and way of talking are also very similar. Wish there would have been more scenes and story around them in the newer episodes :(

Thank you! I really enjoyed this. It's such a trying period the time after Ragnar loses him, but the lingering love for him in many of his choices afterwards are to be respected. From a historical standpoint, many view his passing as the right choice, but it gives the emotions of there's no Ragnar without Athelstan. Like there was no Alexander without Hephaistion.

Realmente no afirmo ni niego que el cariño que estos dos se tenían pudo haber tenido cierto romance, eso ya lo dejo a la interpretación de cada quién, pero debo reconocer que ambos eran almas gemelas. Ragnar era un tipo que tenía sueños y quería proteger a su gente siempre, pero para ello lidiaba con muchos problemas y muchas traiciones, y lo que Athelstan le brindaba era una amistad incondicional, era Justo lo que Ragnar necesitaba, y ambos se complementaban de tal forma, que llega a parecer más que una simple amistad, es un sentimiento diferente, tanto que Ragnar se nota que quedó más que destrozado cuando Athelstan murió.

Floki killed Athelstan because of jealousy and religious fanaticism. Ragnar and Athelstan were soulmates for life. In the end, Floki died in a cave in front of a cross realizing that a new religion was already on the way to erase the old goddess of his belief.

I've lost count of how many times I said, "What the fuck" while watching this video. Like, I've ever watched the first episode of Vikings but I never realised how gay it was...? I might just continue now. Though I spoiled myself. Well, I did have a suspicion Athelstan was going to die, because the gays can never have good things.
