Fact check time: The song was originally recorded by the band Looking Glass and released in 1973. It was written by guitarist and lead vocalist Elliot Lurie, who also wrote and sang "Brandy," their no 1 hit the prior year. This song spent 15 weeks on Billboard (just 1 week less than "Brandy"), but only peaked at 33 (for 2 weeks). Josie Cotton covered it in 1984.

It really annoys me when people, and even DJ’s, refer to Looking Glass as a one hit wonder. This terrific song from their underrated “Subway Serenade” album peaked at #33 in 1973. Nowhere near as big a hit as “Brandy” but still needs to be recognized. It’s strange that everyone remembers “Brandy” but very few people remember this lost, great tune.

Without success or money you can't keep producing albums and if your only 'hit' barely breaks the top 40's you aren't going far. In the end they only produced 2 albums and Brandy was their one hit that keeps them being known 50s years later hence "one hit wonder".

And while certainly not all encompassing, I have a pretty good mind for trivia from that time. Anyway, it doesn't suck but I don't think it gives "Brandy" a run for its money and so it faded into relative obscurity. Many times when a song like this pops up on my radar I'll listen to it and think, "Man! I forgot all about this song! I love this song! I must go to Amazon Music immediately and buy it!" myself and others in the profession agree that this
    song is preferred over Brandy.

Hmmm....this is an alternate take. They cut part of the solo for AM radio play I guess but the meat of the solo is a guitar played with a wah-wah pedal plugged into a Leslie cabinet. Either way the song is badass. Absolute killer bass line, tasteful guitar, fine narrative lyrics, 3 part background harmony, Elliot Luries voice much like the Rob Thomas of his day, and to top it off...horns and strings arranged by the late great Arif Mardin. Could this song be any better? If so....not much.

This is awesome Steve. Where did you find out about the backstory on this song? I like this song much better than Brandy. It gives a real feel for how things were in 1973, and to me the arrangement and guitar work bears resemblance to some of the R&B music of the day.
I see what you mean by an alternate take. My friend Scott introduced me to this song in the 1990's and I have it on a tape he made me.
My top 40 book says it only made it to #33 in 1973. I think it should have been released again a year or two later to see if it could get a higher chart position.
I follow the "Professor of Rock" and he does an interview with Elliot about Brandy, but I'd like to see more on this song.

This is the album version. The single version with the edits is what most radio stations played in 1973.

Heh, the part that was cut out for the radio version is maybe 15 seconds long, but it gets the song under 3 1/2 minutes. It's funny how picky the AM stations were about record lengths - gotta have time for those commercials and inane DJ chatter.

I had never heard this track before, because it failed to get any Australian radio play in its day - and consequently missed our Top 40 charts. It's not a bad song, but I immediately want to listen to Brandy when I hear that distinctive voice. Yes, Brandy is a better song, and has weathered its 48 years very well.

Thought this was a Josie Cotton tune (good reboot) and would have known otherwise if I looked for the writing credit. New one on me after all these years.

This enters my list of two hit bands with the second hit, less acclaimed, is a better song than the, first bigger hit. I like Brandy, but this Is a better constructed piece. Just my opinion.

I can understand that, and I tend to agree. But since Brandy is played about 100 X more than Jimmy, then Jiimmy quickly becomes a favorite for its obscurity.
