When set to ADSR auto it seems cool enough as it is. Doesn't even need the expense of a keyboard to get any sounds out of it. Though would benefit from one, especially with an in built arpeggiator.
This Behringer Cat I can see is ideal for newbies to the synth world who may even be not all that clued up on what the keyboard notes are, let alone being able to play chords.
(It isn't easy, many do struggle and that can put them off progressing further).
With this Behringer Cat they can make & modify the sounds they want to hear and produce without having any conventional structural understanding of creating music.
They would not be feeling as if they are doing 'anything wrong' and making mistakes, perhaps avoiding feeling frustrated.
As whatever music/sound/noise they did produce, or when set to ADSR auto what they co-produced, it would be just as valid. It'd be what they like.
A synth for newcomers and the experienced. Both will benefit.
The sort of kit I would have been better off with decades ago, instead of shelling out the equivalent of £7000 in todays money and have nothing much to show for it.
Paying 1/8th the cost in todays money of what I paid for a FLAT just 10 years back.
THAT for me puts it in to perspective, only just realised recently all the wastage of my money on new gear.
How the big boy music manufacturers have taken advantage of impressionable youth over the years. They did me, but for sure NOT anymore!
The hundreds of £millions wasted on post analogue kit barely worth 10% now of what it originally cost plus inflation. (1990 prices being what was the equivalent of 3.2 times the price in 2024 money). ie £1000 spent = £3200 these days.
What you can get for £3200 these days!!!.
16 or so Behringer desktop units, far far better VFM.
How we HAVE been ripped off over the years.
At least with this Behringer Cat and other Behringer desktop synths the most anyone will ever lose is around £200. In some cases, such as the Behringer TD-3 bass unit, if folk do look around they can get that currently for just £85 brand new.
Far better VFM with Behringer isn't it, it sure is with this unique Behringer Cat module that I will just have to get. It sounds right up my street similar to what my old and knackered used £175 Korg Polysix can/could do.
Great fun I had with that, VFM fun. Far better than with expensive digital Roland gear that a 2024 £219 Yamaha PSR keyboard has better pre-set sounds.
    ---------------------------------------
Having looked in to it, to get a function similar to what the auto function to what the Cat has, there is a AJH DH-ADSR Envelope Generator module for a Eurorack available with a ADSR retriggering function, that may need triggering via a keyboard or a sound pulse.
So not fully auto, though maybe it can be.
Those units on their own are the price of a Behringer Cat synth.
Well, £3 more than the current £207 Cat price.
Or even £18 more than what Amazon UK say they 'intend' to sell the Cat at if a potential buyer wants to wait between 3 to 7 months for the unit to be in stock.
Aug to Nov at the earliest.
Yea, I'll wait 3 to 7 years instead Amazon! Jokers. Pricing it lower to get folks to hang on and not buy one now with other retailers, that the gig is it?
Currently the Euro based retailer Thomann has some Cats in stock for the UK at £208.
One UK based retailer based up North say 21st May 2024 and another down South say one month later than that, for either of them to 'expect' any stock.
Music Store DV247 currently selling them for £284.
Elsewhere around the world might be better off for availability.
So the Cat looks to be an in demand synth as many Behringer models are.
They don't seem to be able to make enough of them.
Or maybe there is a bit of preferring 'pre-orders' on the books to judge how many to produce. Hedging their bets a bit.
No need they just sell, the VFM prices and what their synths can do sells them.
    --------------------------------------------------------------------
People watching this video do need to take in to account that as said at the start of it, that an Eventide Blackhole Effect pedal was used.
They on their own btw are almost the price of the Cat.
There would of cause be other less expensive reverb effects units available. That this sort of experimental music creation does seem to benefit from.
Gives it more of a lingering ongoing spacey type sound than a solely direct sudden one, so adding the sense of time in to it all.
    A time & space synth.
This Behringer Cat synth does then, in auto mode, give a showcase of what varied wonderful sounds 'can' be created, some of which a user may not, by themselves ever get around to producing.
They get to hear sounds/music that they perchance may like, and then can see what settings produced that sound.
And then go on to be able to reproduce it themselves.
Of cause some of these sounds they may well have created anyway by way of generally just experimenting and fiddling about, just that with this ADSR auto function of the Cat it is also a bit of a teaching aid.
Just as many Yamaha popular PSR type domestic keyboards have conventional teaching aids built in, in a way this Behringer Cat unit has one of its own.
It doesn't even have to be rigged up to anything else, it can be placed by the side of ones bed, headphones plugged in, lying there in bed tweaking it around.
Like having an actual Cat around the house, letting it sit there, content, happy as Larry purring away, and occasionally reaching over with one hand and petting it.
    Shifting a slider or something.
A bit of a lazy mans synth. At least it can be, it has that ability to be so. When some feel too tired to put in a music production, but do want to, instead just relaxing watching the TV or something and twiddling about with their Cat.
Maybe more of a relaxing mans synth then. (Yea we know, women use them as well!)
Though when midi'd up and if patched in to other equipment's sockets, I bet it gives the overall music creation another dimension doesn't it.
The Behringer Cat is in a way a sort of a 'synth sound effects unit' for use with other synths, or use with some conventional keyboard with inbuilt sounds, the combination of that.
Or as we see in this great video above, the Cat can used as a synth just on its own.
Even letting it do its own thing.
A lot of versatility and capability.
A tales from the Outer Limits synth then as well as what maybe the Krell used to fiddle about with.

      Hi David
Excellent comment, I'll pin it to the top of all the comments.
Just one tiny point i'd like to correct, I used the Blackhole iPad App, not the hardware pedal, just run the CATs audio output into my audio interface, then into my iPad.

So like a daft sort I ordered a Behringer Cat and have had it for about a week. Sadly, along with being grateful to Behringer for making this VFM musical gear I do have a tad bit of buyers regret.
There being only so much fiddling about that can be done on ADSR auto until one runs out of knobs & switches that have not been fiddled about with before.
It has been midi'd up to a 61 key keyboard but I can't seem to make anything worth hearing that is not a cacophony of noise. Worse than what it usually is.
Maybe that is due to lack of ability, yes, I am sure it may well be. In the hands of a more experienced musician it could well be a handy tool and likely is from some of the YT videos seen out there.
Though on the whole at least the Cat would give a newcomer a good idea as to the sort of sounds that they like to create & hear. I does have a wide spread of sounds that can be created.
Getting an idea also of how to operate the VCO's, VCF's etc.
I do wonder whether getting a midi keyboard controller such as the Novation Launchkey 49 mk3 that has a superb arpeggiator, easily modified, maybe that would help bring out some usefulness to me in the Behringer Cat.
Banging on the arpeggiator and then improvising with other ambient self made sounds from the Cat.
Maybe for some people the Cat is an instrument that is more useful accompanying other musical gear they may have or will get. Giving it an extra edge to it all.
It just is not working out for me with the Cat being the main instrument of my set up.
Maybe when I go and get hold of my knackered out Korg Polysix, Yamaha C-5 and a piddly but still of use Yamaha PSS-680 and work that in to the Roland D-20 and Behringer Cat set up the Cat will start to shine more.
      -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Oh, btw, the external audio socket on the Cat for me does work.
I have been able to run the audio from a Roland D20 in to the Cat and thereafter use the entire block of the VCF section and the 'Transient Generator' section, and the far left section underneath the Cat logo. This does add to the usefulness of the Cat.
Though contrary to what I have seen said on some online music based website the VCO1 and VCO2 sections cannot be used to modify external audio.
Just as what I find with the onboard 'noise' generator.
That cannot be modified with the VCO1 and VCO2. Well, in both cases not that it can be heard. Not even heard with all the various waveforms turned down or totally down.
So on the whole then, at the moment I would have preferred paying more and getting say a Behringer MonoPoly with an in built arpeggiator. Every Behringer desktop synth should have one fitted even if the original synth that the Behringer clone is based upon did not originally have one.
Many of these original synths did not have midi, some not even velocity sensitivity, yet Behringer add those functions. Given the choice between say a Behringer Wasp at £133 without an arpeggiator OR a Wasp with an arpeggiator for £160, I bet the latter would sell the most.
It is an important thing for many.
The Cat is not bad for what it is, maybe the rest of these desktop synths are of a similar variation on the theme. Just numerous amounts of VCO's, a VCF, LFO and an envelope modifying section. Mostly of a similar fashion, some better than others in what they are able to do and useability.
I'd best hold on for a Behringer JT-16, Behringer Polyeight and their flagship much in demand VS-80, all keyboard based equipment, all with in built arpeggiators and midi the Cat up to them.
Though with a Yamaha GS-80 clone on hand many folk with existing equipment may well find they get less use out of them. JT-4000 users etc.
The Cat will be ok for now. I'll get some use out of it. Had some fun with it already, maybe more to come.
I am grateful for it Mr Behringer guy from Germany, all your stuff looks VFM to me. Without you on the musical scene we would be ripped off forever more by the likes of Roland, Korg etc, as we always have.
They have had to change their ways somewhat due to you, charging less, just to shift enough of their stock. So buying any Behringer gear does on the whole bring down the cost of synth gear for everyone else.
Added something to it all then.
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Would I recommend the Behringer Cat?
I must say it is well built, a nice chunky solid bit of kit, the knobs and the sliders are firm & fine. It does have that ADSR auto function that I have to date only seen on a Behringer 2600.
For what it is it is decent enough for anyone.
Though I would say, with any prospective purchase such as this really do consider is it what you want, would you instead prefer something else even if there is more expense, or is this the right choice.
Of cause on the whole it can be a bit of an unknown factor, not knowing for sure until you actually get the gear, so is a difficulty then.
Yes the Cat is alright, it is just so frustrating having more enthusiasm than ability. Just so hard to be proficient in it all. We want some Bob Ross of the synth world to show some of us how to efficiently and with little experience & ability be able to knock out something worth their while.
I'll look around on UA-cam for such material and carry on trying to make some music as best I can.
Good luck to everyone in your musical endeavours.

I have to put volume on bypass for sustained sound. And even then it doesn't sound anything like yours. It sounds like a vibrating wine glass.
