I'm a senior who was diagnosed with bursitis in my one hip. It was so painful and causing me many sleepless nights. When I spoke to my doctor about it, she said it was just part of aging and to take aspirin. I started doing my own research and began a two pronged approach. I stepped up my exercise routine and introduced powdered collagen powder into a milk/cacao powder drink every night. I now have absolutely no bursitis pain at all. I also started putting bones, onion and garlic in my slow cooker for over 24 hrs. to make soup, which I think helped.

@@MarieLouiseLudwig Hi Marie Louise. I use two scoops of collagen powder. Every night I microwave a large cup of milk, add 2 scoops of collagen powder and a large scoop of organic cacao powder for a boost of antioxidants. I don't put any sweetener in, but my husband loves either maple syrup or honey in his. I put turmeric in my food if it's appropriate i.e. pasta sauce, chili, etc. plus I sprinkle it on potatoes that I am air frying. I'm not on HRT either.

Collagen is a protein primarily found in animal connective tissues, so there are no direct plant sources of collagen. However, certain plant-based foods can promote the body’s natural production of collagen by providing the nutrients needed for collagen synthesis, such as vitamin C, amino acids, and other cofactors.
Key Nutrients and Plant Sources to Support Collagen Production
    1. Vitamin C
Vitamin C is essential for collagen synthesis, as it helps form and stabilize collagen fibers.
    Plant Sources:
    • Citrus fruits (oranges, lemons, limes)
    • Berries (strawberries, blueberries, raspberries)
    • Kiwi
    • Papaya
    • Bell peppers
    • Broccoli
    • Kale and spinach
    2. Amino Acids (Proline, Glycine, and Lysine)
These are the building blocks of collagen. While plants don’t contain collagen, they provide these amino acids in smaller amounts.
    Plant Sources:
    • Legumes (lentils, chickpeas, beans)
    • Soy products (tofu, tempeh, edamame)
    • Seeds (pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds)
    • Nuts (almonds, cashews, pistachios)
    3. Zinc
Zinc plays a crucial role in collagen production by activating proteins needed for tissue repair.
    Plant Sources:
    • Whole grains (quinoa, oats)
    • Legumes (lentils, chickpeas)
    • Nuts and seeds (chia seeds, hemp seeds, pumpkin seeds)
    4. Copper
Copper is another cofactor required for collagen cross-linking and stability.
    Plant Sources:
    • Sesame seeds
    • Cashews
    • Dark chocolate
    • Mushrooms (shiitake)
    5. Antioxidants
Antioxidants protect collagen from damage caused by free radicals.
    Plant Sources:
    • Green tea
    • Berries
    • Dark leafy greens
    • Pomegranate
    • Carrots and sweet potatoes (rich in beta-carotene, a precursor to vitamin A)
    Collagen-Boosting Plant-Based Foods
Some plant-based foods contain specific compounds that indirectly support collagen production:
    1. Aloe Vera: Contains compounds that stimulate collagen production.
    2. Seaweed: May help protect collagen in the skin from oxidative damage.
    3. Soy: Contains genistein, a phytoestrogen that may boost collagen production.
    Plant-Based Collagen Alternatives
While plants don’t produce collagen, some plant-based collagen supplements are formulated using bacteria or yeast engineered to produce collagen, combined with plant-based nutrients to support skin, joint, and hair health.
In conclusion, although plants don’t directly provide collagen, a plant-based diet rich in the above nutrients can significantly support the body’s ability to produce its own collagen naturally.

I’ve got a pot of chicken bones on the stove right now, simmering for the collagen for tomorrow. When the broth is cool I strain it and pour it into ice cube trays then into storage bags and I always have fresh collagen broth for lunch with some fast steamed collard greens in it (or any other greens on hand) I put ginger in the broth when I bring it up to boil, and it kills that dead smell. Works like a charm. I have SLE lupus diagnosed in 2017, so I’m not playing around 😇 I sprinkle some ground mustard seed on the soup before I eat it to be sure the sulforaphanes stay active from the collards.

I eat fresh pineapple about 2-3 x weekly… because the core of the pineapple is super- healthy for helping to reduce/prevent inflammation & osteoporosis. that’s the bromelain that Dr. Li was talking about. Frozen & canned pineapple do not include the core. My freezer is packed with frozen fruit and veggies, but I always buy fresh pineapple. But I never knew the pro trick about wiggling the top of the pineapple to check ripeness. Thanks, again, Dr Li. You are a trusted source I always recommend to others!

@@patbergeron9149animal abuse is in every farm, no matter if it’s factoring farming or not. I went vegan 14 years ago after reading a long article on the newspaper about transportation of these animals to the slaughterhouse in the Uk. It was heart breaking. It’s awful what over 70 billions of farm animals have to endure every year for human consumption of animal products all day long. I was raised in Brazil rescuing stray animals, so I feel I have a very strong connection with them. I care about them, more than my tastebuds, so since realising all the cruelty taking place in animal agriculture, I stopped consuming animal products, and it’s been amazing for my health. All my period cramps and discomfort stopped and I never have headaches. At 47, I have no health issues at all. 95% of what I eat is a variety of whole food and it makes me very energised and happy about life. My diet is way better than most people, and I’m active and I practice capoeira (a Brazilian martial art) I don’t need bone broth from a animal that had his life taken away from them to make me healthy

Thank you Dr. Li for your insightful lecture. 🙏
I still have a few questions. As someone who eats a plant-based diet, I'm wondering if I could replace the chicken stock with seaweed, specifically kombu?
In vegetable cuisine, gelatin is usually replaced by agar-agar. Does this have the same effect as gelatin?
Furthermore, I am surprised that you do not encourage organic food. Don't all those pesticides harm the amino acids?
Does it make sense to take the three amino acids (glycine, proline, hydroxyproline) in addition to all collagen-stimulating foods? Hopefully you will take the time to respond. 🙏❤️🙏

In other videos he mentions eating organic often. Also for those who eat meat and cheese, yogurt, to find organic, grass-fed when possible. I agree about the seaweed. He mentions this in another video. Those are great for minerals and copper as well...

I read that adding some vinegar to the broth liquid helps extract more minerals from the bone. Many of the web sites that explain how to make bone broth add this instruction ... Dr. Wil should also mention this step.

Apparently the '60,000 miles (100,000km) of blood vessels' is something people have been quoting for decades. It's based on an overblown estimate made in the 1920's. Very recent research now indicates there are between 9- 20,000km. Still a lot but only 20% at most.

    Dr. Li,
I read your book twice. But, listening to your videos reinforces me again. The science you bring nails it. I am 77 years young. Juicing in my 20s full time then got swayed. Have read all the books. Thank you! I understand and appreciate your scientific approach. Don't agree on bone broth but I'm a vegan who eats fish. Is there an alternative for me. Of course, I'm doing 1 through 4. Stay young,
