They asked their questions directly from Mohammad PBUH or Kholafa Al Rashideen. But after spreading of Islam and later generations after Sahaba Muslims couldn’t easily find answers for their questions or sometimes they would get multiple answers so therefore the scholars did lots of research and studies to collect Hadith to solve this issue which created madhab.

In addition to the response above, the “madhabs” had, in a way, already been developed by the time of the 2nd generation of muslims. There were no “capitals” of scholarship then- Macca+Medinah and Iraq.
M+M: ahlul hadith (people of harith)- had more access to hadith and so developed an understanding based on that and local customs which were assumed to be correct due to the Prophet’s existence being so recent.
Iraq: ahlul ra’i (people of analogy)- more based on critical analysis of quran and what hadiths they had access to. This led to the schools of Imams Malik, Shafi’i and Ahmed (Hanbal, even though he was originally from Iraq but later went to Medinah if I’m not mistaken).
And both were considered to be on the truth. i.e. it’s not so much the resulting fatwas that matter, but rather the soundness of the methodology. This led to the Hanafi school. Imam Abu Hanifa was the first to establish the science of fiqh. His level of intelligence with analysis of evidence was essentially unheard of, and the disrespect his madhab sometimes gets is illegitimate considering his method influenced Imam Shafi’i as well. There is also a story that one of the other imams (probably Shafi’i) visited Hanifa’s grave and when he prayed there, he didn’t raise his hands (although the Shafi’i madhab preaches it) out if respect for Hanifa and his madhab not including that. It showed that he didn’t see the differences between madhabs to be significant.
Even Imam Malik I think once made a statement that if Hanifa were to show him an item and tell him it’s not what he sees in front of him, he could convince him; that is how highly regarded Hanifa’s analysis of evidence was.
Considering none of us have mastery of Arabic, quran, tafseer and hadiths (all together), let alone being able to establish right/wrong in rulings, the need to follow a madhab is the result of our insufficiencies. We have to follow a madhab for the assurance of having a methodology that the scholarly consensus agrees is on the haqq. At least we won’t be sinful or arrogant (thinking we know more ourselves).

21578 - Zayd ibn Thabit reported: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: "I am leaving two caliphs among you: the Book of Allah, a rope stretched between heaven and earth, or between heaven and earth, and the PROGENY of my household, and they will not be separated until they return to the basin."
The truth is that, nobody is following the recommendation of Rasulallah صلى الله عليه و اله و سلم !
Abu Hanifa repented (tawba) two times, yet they call him 'imam e azam', where is the LOGIC in it, where is Islam !? Is it wise to follow some guys whose forfathers were mushrikeen ?? i

If I'm a maaliki I'm not suppose to fold my hands in Salah. But it's sunnah to fold the hands.should I follow my madhab or follow my sunnah. If I'm a shafi my wudhu breaks if I just touch a women. But sunnah of our prophet (pbuh) it's not. So should I follow my prophet or my madhab.imam Abu hanifa r.a) said if i say something and if it controdicts the prophet pbuh) throw my sayings on the wall and follow what the prophet pbuh) said.all the four great imams never taught their followers to blindly follow their madhabs it's their followers who made it compulsary to follow the madhab. Imam maalik r.a) use to say u can take any one's opinion or you can reject exept this man's he use to point out (prophets grave).

Well if they taught their fiqh, it's not because they didn't want us to follow them. Plus your argument about the fact that the imam said somethings, which contredicts the sunna shows how little knowladge you have. If the quarn or the prophet pbuh said something that is clear cut, no one of the four imams would ever contredict it. Even the sababa would understand differently, what the prophet pbuh says, you can go look at the hadith were the sahaba had to pray asser at banu Quraiza.

for us shafie madhab.. our solution during umrah n haj is we do taqlid on hanafi madhab before doing tawaf.. we do wudhu as per hanafi madhab n put intention to follow the opinion of imam abu hanifah…. this is the wisdom of diff opinions…. just so u know… imam shafie view on touching non mahram will nullify one’s wudhu is legit.. it’s because he chose the meaning over to his understanding of the word.. imam abu hanifah chose the other meaning… both r right because both iman made ijtihad… even if they r wrong.. they get one reward…

What about the differences of opinion in the schools of thought (fiqhi law) ?
These 4 schools are followed as a method for "character building" not for getting an ego. If the 4 imams gave different opinion on a matter, let's say about eating certain sea food, they had a different method for character building. If one Imam was very lenient about certain sea food,he still gave very strict guidelines for prayer. So, obsession don't grow. Another Imam was strict about sea food but was little lenient about the rules of ablution. Or the Imams may have looked at the population and had judgements about it's weaknesses and strength. Certain sea food can be used as a healing temporarily. It is well known that people give up certain food obsession when social relations(psychology) and deen improves. Meat is a favorite food of depressed people. Young children do not like meat much unless there's little influence of Shaitaan.
Why can't the general Muslims simply read a Hadith book and follow his own understanding?
If a person does that he will be using the Deen as per his foolish desires and eventually the desires may control his Deen. Some may even read Hadith on his mobile phone while sitting in mannerless restaurants. About the topic, for example, Imam Shafi said a mere touching of the spouse can invalidate the ablution (wudu). A misguided person may say there's a Hadith which says rasoolullah touched his wife intimately and went for prayer. The problem is,a general Muslim can't even be disciplined in his eating manners or anger management. Without a strict training method he may go to prayer with a big ego.
Islam teaches a radically different method by encouraging the individual to discipline his psychology(in awe of Allah) without deciding what he wants to get (things) or achieve socially. When he has disciplined himself to like what Allah likes and dislike what Allah dislikes his heart gets a new condition "to give" or to contribute socially without the mind's obsession about benefit. Allah puts such a person in situations(which he didn't expect) where he can be socially productive. A Muslim gives good to people because his heart has been given that capacity, but not by using any skill of the mind or using dominating techniques. He may actually feel burdened to do good things but his heart has been conditioned to feel an obligation to do good for people, especially to people who are connected to him. Other good people can sense authentic human kindness. A person of emotional strength knows what he can solve or not solve.
When a person becomes too concerned about achieving things(or develop his mind) without guided direction from Allah he starts acting like Al Malik(absolute owner) and develops Aqeedah deficiencies and bad akhlaaq. This is how some people lose all ownership of their
nafs. People must watch their wishes and contemplate where they lead him carefully.
Perhaps this quote explains the science :
      ❎❎
      A quote:
      What is character ?
"the sum of qualities that defines a person. These qualities included a man’s intellect, thoughts, ideas, motives, intentions, temperament, judgment, behavior, imagination, perception, emotions, loves, and hates. All of these components go to the shaping and coloring of a man’s character. They have all some part in producing that final type of self, that ultimate habit of will, into which the man’s whole activities at last shape themselves.”
      -- Bruce William Straton
