Just went to the Herb Alpert concert in Iowa City. Fantastic night. Just to hear him play the trumpet in person was a memory I’ll treasure

A great great interview. In a world with a very short attention span you both held my attention. I’m going to play my Sergio tunes and listen to you Lani in a different light.
when the husband spoke the wife was listening intensely and purposefully, even after 41 years of being together, you know they are in tune !! And when people complimented on your wife's achievements, you applauded wholeheartedly, you know you got it.

Fantastic lives and fantastic success! Two very excellent people who have earned all they have achieved. Nobody was forced to buy their musical products. There are no government subsidies or laws which grant them an advantage. Notice how emotionally balanced they are. This is the secret: Passion, talent and intellect, moderated......harmoniously (no pun) combined and focused on their goals. How rare! Best wishes!
I just recently had the opportunity to see Herb and Lani in concert here in Kansas City. What an excellent concert! I sure hope to get the chance to see them again.

I wish herb had been in a movie or two. Herb Alpert SO good looking; and, oh his music! A genius! I was crazy about both he and that music. That music STILL gets to me. From Brazil 66 there was Lani singing those songs! Never kept up with each of them only to hear a new tune of Alpert as I married and never knew these two were together! Herb was THE BEST in singing the song, This Guys in Love w You, by far! I’m early 60’s now. Stay well and keep playing on both of you!
I grew up listening to herb and TJB in Tijuana and fell in love with his style and it inspired me to start playing the trumpet when there where not to many Latin trumpet players to model from and gave me an idea how a Latin trumpet player should sound even do he is not even Latino, I found that very interesting how he visualize the feeling of that style of music and make it his own
I started playing the trumpet in grade school and played throughout high school. Herb Alpert was my inspiration. I used to put his TJB albums on the record player and play along on my trumpet. I was actually pretty good and was able to get his tone and style down well. I think of all the hours I spent in my bedroom playing his music...I loved playing that horn!

Fantastic discussion. Both Lani and Herb seem like genuinely nice, down to earth people, despite the zillions they must have. Thanks, Dad, for introducing me to their timeless, sublimely beautiful music from the time I could crawl.
Good job dad. My dad was ultra conservative and 40s music fan when I was a teenager in the 1960s. He'd take cross country biz trips by air, and in those days all they had extra was a special audio stereo track of different music formats. He was excited when he got home and told us all about this new group he heard on the audio track on the plane, so he went out to the store and bought the Going Places album, and played and danced to it constantly.....a big move for an old conservative guy who looked down his nose at any kind of "new " music.

Herb Alpert started out by making great records with Jan & Dean on the Doré label in 1959-60. This was together with Lou Adler.

Its almost like someone threw some bad mojo on him back then. darn it, I had the chance to meet you man, and didnt tag along with the group that went in becuase I wasnt invited. I should have did it anyway. That was out near Bethesda Maryland about the time this interview was done actually.
In 1976 one of my college girlfriends introduced me to the music of Lani Hall. Her voice mesmerized me so much I named one of my daughters after her. I equate her voice on par with Helen Rogers. Their voice puts soft jazz at a whole different level.

Lani hit upon the key to a successful marriage. Don’t try to change each other. Enjoy each other’s idiosyncrasies. My wife and I have a lot in common, but we’re two different people and never try to change each other.
what an engrossing interview with two (actually 3) talented and interesting people. Lani is right, Herb was a beautiful man when TJ was in it's heyday. I had all those big albums; wish I still did...boo hoo.
Great listening to Lani and Herb two greats. Lani what a voice. Why can’t I not get “Funny you should say that” by Sergio or the Vintage 74 album by Sergio Mendes and Brazil 77?

Hey Herb: Keep playing, but don't blow too hard thinking you're in your 20s again.....your fans don't want you having a stroke. Big fan of Lani Hall....loved her and Karen Phillippi's unique vocal style in Brasil 66. I used Herb's slow trumpet version of Pretty World as outcue bumper music to a magazine format radio show I produced on Shortwave DX radio.....KGEI in San Fran....a pgm. about Frisco events fror broadcast to Japanese youth.
Are there pictures of and inside studio and the different artists listed under A & M? It would be a great tv show

The interviewer asks some very private questions - obviously he did not know Herb was married with children before Lani - it seemed awkward and i'm glad Herb did not say much.
