  • In this casual video, I test whether the FiiO M17 DAP, FiiO's flagship beast of a DAC can drive the power-hungry planar magnetic headphones, the HIFIMAN Susvara or the ABYSS AB-1266 Phi TC.

    Love the fiio m17. I use it as a desktop system. As a dac amp out of my laptop. Amazing device. Bargain compared to other flagship daps

    I bought the M17 in early January and since then have used it for hundreds of hours, chiefly in direct current and enhanced over-ear mode to drive an Arya Stealth. The advertised battery life is wildly exaggerated. That’s not an issue if used in DC mode, especially since battery charging can be turned off in that mode. Or at least that used to be the case. Ever since the latest firmware update to 1.0.4 at the end of June the DAP issues “battery overheating” notifications after about 15 minutes when used in DC mode, even if battery charging is turned off and the cooling fan is on. This never happened in hundreds of hours of use under the two previous firmware iterations I’ve used. FiiO informs me that the latest firmware is issuing this warning to prevent “battery swelling.” This problem has undercut my use case so much that I’m basically left with a $1799 brick. FiiO’s proposed solution to me is reverting back to the previous firmware, but that doesn’t address why the battery is susceptible to swelling. At least one Head-fi user in the M17 thread there has mentioned the battery overheating issue, and he says it happens when he’s using it in line out mode. What firmware are you M17 owners in this thread using?

    This sounds tremendous with DD headphones alongside iems and planars. I really didn't expect such good sound with 650. The Swiss army knife of DAPs

    I think that you have nailed the area where these DAPS can improve and it is in what they can flawlessly drive. The M17 is going to be able to keep up with headphones that others can't.

    Not only will it power the two mentioned headphones, but it should also drive the Mod House Audio Tungsten, judging by the voltage output figures.

    Awesome review as always. I wonder if shanling M30 would drive those to full potential? The new amp module is supposed to be very powerful. Have you heard it?

      I would give that a big maybe, I wouldn't put money on it though... but the m30 isn't really "portable" by portable standards lol unless you dont really care about that. but at that point I dont see why you wouldn't just buy a regular amp in a case to carry around.

    Does the colour changing function for quality also work with e.g. tidal or just in the internal fiio music app?
    Because mine stays blue, eventuell in tidal mqa titles?

    Good afternoon, I got a lot of recommendations from you and thank you very much for that. The answers are always concise, the whole point in two words. But now I'm asking how to proceed - the Fiio M17 seemed interesting to me, but a month ago I bought an Astell&Kern Kann Max (not a weak DAP with 15V, 4 9038 chips, but mobile versions), and I wonder if the sound of my headphones will change from the Fiio M17 (Focal Stellia, Focal Clear, Zmf Verite Closed, Denon 9200 - they do not really need excessive power, then Kann Max will do)

    • @user-kx8pt7td8q
      @user-kx8pt7td8q 2 роки тому +1

      I'm interested in the sound, because the Kann Max differed in sound from its predecessors (it was compared by some with the Ibasso 220 max, where it won, but the 220 max, at least in the size of the stage, was inferior, but it had a more interesting and more convenient arrangement of instruments for the listener). So I can't understand without the help of a specialist, will I get a decrease in sound or just power and barely 1% improvement?

    • @nyvoreviews5443
      @nyvoreviews5443 2 роки тому +1

      Kann max is much weaker than m17

    • @amplifyaudioreviews
      @amplifyaudioreviews  2 роки тому +2

      I loved the Kann Alpha sound. For the headphones you have, both SQ and output power wise, Kann Max should be sufficient.

    • @nyvoreviews5443
      @nyvoreviews5443 2 роки тому +2

      Another thing to consider is m17 is physically huge. It’s not something you can easily put in your pocket. Kann max sounded mediocre to me. Nothing special, but no major faults either but it can’t power any thing power-hungry well.

    • @user-kx8pt7td8q
      @user-kx8pt7td8q 2 роки тому +1

      I also have Kann Alfa, the sound is interesting (not that there is anything significant in terms of characteristics, but a special warm sound as a highlight), and Kann Max is better in all parameters, but more neutral, better controls high frequencies, mids are highlighted, bass is the basis of the sound , but it does not cover others, but, as it were, envelops and fills all voids with itself. The stage is bigger, in height and width, as well as depth. But the Alfa bass dominates, but it's nicely done, like a surgeon accurately doses, but many people think that the equalizer is turned on the bass, but it's such a handwriting, the voices are more alto, the problem is that the high frequencies are poorly controlled. I described all this in order to more precisely ask you about the sound in comparison with Fiio, and not the power itself or other dimensions or interface nuances.
