A good idea. But I would sew a hat with one seam from the front, and from the rest of the mittens

Hat from the front, refold and cut mittens. Sleeves can be cut for fingerless gloves, or bed socks. Neck trim can be cut off and reused on cap or cuff of mittens. I like to use wool sweaters from thrift stores.
