  • East of Kosice in Slovakia, the standard gauge double track main line from the Ukraine parallels the Russian broad gauge single line also running from the Ukraine. Both routes carry a lot of freight, particularly iron ore destined for the large US Steel plant in Kosice.

Ale umíme, ale když to nikdo nechce/nepotřebuje/neumí zaplatit, tak proč plýtvat energií.

They are only minority, close to borders with Ukraine (hmm, well, Košice is not close to those borders, but also not far). But else, you need to boggies exchange in special stations prepared to do it - or (and it is better) boggies capable to change gauge (but they are mostly on passenger trains for lines on railways with different gauges*). The biggest of them is in Čierná nad Tisou (or formerly Čierná pri Čope) on Slovak-Ukrain borders.
      * If I am not wrong, Spanish Talgo's boggies are capable to change gauge. And also, but I am not sure, Siemens Velaro for RŽD that goes between Russia and Poland.

The broad gauge Skodas have real character. I like the way they 'sing' as they climb up the hill.

Particularly the 'Pershings'. This is a great place to see Skoda power at their best.

Yes thats correct. Its my second visit to this stretch of line - the first time I did't see one broad gauge trains all day so I was more than pleased on this visit. :)

      My friends,
      this is a little misunderstanding:
"Tornádo" is a nickname for EMU class of 460 (for me better known as "Pantograf", sometimes "Pantograf" is referring to EMUs class of 560, the 3 main differences are the electricity: class 460 for 3kV= and class 560 for 25kV~50Hz, the power regulation: class 460 has rheostatic power controll, but class 560 has thyristor controlled rectifiers, and finally transmitting the traction power: class 460 has traction motors one on each axle in the bogies, known as UIC Bo'Bo', while class 560 has traction motors placed underframe rectangular to bogies, transmitting the power by shafts known as UIC B'B'. I don't know why, only guess: unballanced forces on the axles are less by shafts)
The ex-SZhD sleeper coaches (nowadays Russian or Ukrainean) in the consist:
These coaches are on the route from Bratislava to Kiev or Moscow as thru-cars (sleeper courses) and between Košice and Čierna n/Tisou are carried by regular passenger trains, but never by EMUs of class 671.
