Yamaha NS-1000m / NS-690 / NS-1000 Comparison
Receiver: Yamaha CR-1020 (70 watts/channel A, B, C)
Source: Yamaha CD-S300
Music: Dire Straits - Your Latest Trick
It is really a very good comparison, very professional and usable! I like the sound of the 690.
Thanks for your feedback
Nice Collection! I have two pairs of NS-1000M now. Hunting for a 2nd amp to drive them. Best speakers i have ever heard IMO, Heard others that are more expensive and that other people like more.. but they don't do what the Yamaha's do.
Thanks, there's lot to like about the NS-1000. What kind of amp are you after? Are you in Oz?
@@vintagehifilover I am outside of St Louis. I have a Yamaha C-4 preamp and M-4 Poweramp. looking for another M-4 or perhaps a M-2.. or a B-2. Not really set on a particular amp, Would like to stay in the Yamaha family. A pair of M-4 would probably look great sitting by eachother.
@johnman 334 I have two pairs NS1000M and stacked the second pair upside down on the other pair and run them on two MX830 via C60. Next to those two pairs NS700X on two MX630 via CX1000 to have some redundancy if there is defect in the future. NS1000M and NS700X are close - with more bass reserve on those NS700X. A part of this setup is first owned since 1985.
I put a bid on a pair of NS-1000 M's and must wait until the Oct. 9th.
I should have been a bit more careful to notice what I consider such a Long wait.
Now my hands are tied until then or until I'm 'Out bid'!
I remember hearing them in a upscale Audio Store back in 77(?) and they were my choice then but too $$ for a new father.
Today, I'm turning 70 and I'm back into it but it's PRICY as always.
Sort of a Last Hurrah but I hope not..
LOL
Hi Ken, compared to Yamaha's current speaker, NS-5000, the NS-1000 offers great value for money, and it should hold it's resale value pretty well too, meaning you won't lose out if you end up not liking their sound. Hope you win the auction. Cheers VHFL
where is the site that you bid on them at?
Any idea what my NS-2000's would go for?
Happy Birthday back then!
You sound like you have a long way to go buddy. Have fun. Plenty of time. You're an inspiration to someone 20 years younger. I am getting these soon now. Cheers.
Great test, thanks!!
NS 690 all the way for me!
I prefer the "less" loud midrange in the 690's and I think that would suit the rock and top 40 Virgin radio type stuff we listen to.
The NS-690 would be less sensitive to less then optimal amplifiers i.e. more forgiving whereas with the NS1000 it would be a lot more revealing. Btw Thanks for stopping by
I got the 690's, had them for over 30 years ! I'm thinking about upgrading to the 1000m's, because the 690's is all I could afford back then ! I remember when auditioning these speakers the 1000's did sound a little better, less boxy than the 690's. I use an equalizer and a sound-exciter to tone-down the boxiness of the 690's and to spread out the sound, so now I'm wondering if the upgrade is really necessary ?
Absolutely
Bloody awesome!!! Its really great to see the die hard Yamaha guys!!👍
Thank you so much!!! I am going to need to listen through a few more times to take it in...
Thanks for stopping by :-)
that's pretty cool! As I'm scrolling down reading comments, I can hardly tell the difference as you switch between speakers. They all sound great! It seems like the speaker in the corner is a bit brighter than the other 2. One thing this video demonstrates like your video 2 of 2, placement will make a difference. In the second video, I can hear a distinct difference from the lighter colored speaker. Why is that I see some NS1000's with L pads and others without?
Thanks for sharing your thoughts 👍🏼
Placement in the room has a huge influence. This isn't a valid comparison. Like the speakers, though!
Correct but it was the best I could do at the time.
Japan's audio magazine ( STEREO SOUND ) highly recommend YAMAHA NS- 690.
I agree with you my friend, YAMAHA NS-690 are very underrated speakers, no doubt about that. Cheers VHFL
NS 1000 ♫ Mark Knopfler is some of the clearest music out there ! Nice demonstration.
Yes indeed. Thanks for stopping by :-)
1000M are so smooth up top over the other two.
Totaly agree.
i would go for the NS-1000s with the bigger midrange drivers. Another brand has built its success on a big 3" dome midrange, very popular among mastering engineers. Still i have the feeling that these Yamaha could be even better sounding for the actual material used to make the diaphragms that is beryllium ... the best ever.
per my ears, the bigger midrange made the biggest difference. Yes, speaker placement was a factor but those huge midranges were just awesome.
Yes they make all the difference
No significant or any at all difference between 1000s but as i know fm personal experience and this test confirms 690 has thinner midrange and lower volume sound than 1000 . P.S. NS 690 is underated which is good thing for low budget audiophiles.!
The NS690 is a great speaker. Thanks for stopping by :-)
I got the yamaha ns-30x and they sound amayzing
👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👍🏼
I have 690s and 30x love them both. 30x a bit hotter.
690s for sure but also got to take into account the placement of the speakers.
Yes the voice is important!
👍🏼
Ns1000 yamaha cr2020 and kenwood super 11 in my collection ,.
For some reason I sold my 2020 & NS1000 in 1990.
Oh yeah, I got married.
Two sets of mistakes, only one rectified so far.
Have never seen 2020 for sale.
Can't decide if NS1000 are good for my flat.
Are you sure you've not got the right & left speakers the wrong way around?
If not, I've had mine the wrong way for the last 37 years.
The Yamaha logo should be on the inside.
Yes, you're right. At least they are all matching, even if sitting on the wrong side 😊
@@vintagehifilover - I'm not 100% sure myself now?
Just seen someone saying the tweeters should be innermost?
Choose the one that sounds best to your ears! Cheers
@@lucee2261 no, you’re right. Tweeters on the outside.
Excellent test!
Thanks for stopping by :-)
Beautiful collection!
Thanks
Nice comparo! but room placement, mike being closer to the M's, make a huge difference.
Having 3 pairs of loudspeakers, especially Acoustic Suspension ones, in the same room, dampens the bass a lot; the ones not playing's woofers, act like an out of phase damper. They ''absorb'' the bass presure.
Thanks, interesting observation.
There have been acoustics paper written about using speakers and various electronic loads to absorb sound. You can also use speakers as microphones - they're transducers.
absolutely it a difficult to do an a-b copmparison and yes too many big woofers in one room but also the 690 obviously have less authority that the bigger ones so easy to hear the are way softer and dont forget the efficiency of all these different speakers means that its realy not a good comparison unless they all 98db 1w @ 1m which i doubt and the amount of bass drivers in the room with one pair playing you will be able to feel a lot of vibrations in the speakers not playing I just got some 1977 ns-645s
¡¡wow!!inpresionante
Thanks for stopping by :-)
i like more the Black beside the wall 👍👍 or is it beacause of the speaker position??
Hmm it's hard to tell
What’s the general consensus for toe in on these? I recently bought a pair of ns-200Ma’s and I’m experimenting with placement, etc
Better with toe in, the sweet spot is quite small in my experience.
I have a mint pair of the NS690i and love them! They are good with rock but they really shine with jazz and acoustic. They really come alive with some horse power and class A equipment. I use a Krell amp around 300 watts and a Classe CP-50 pre amp all in total over $6,000 in hardware. I know a guy with a mint pair of NS1000s one owner for $1500. Not sure if I should get them? What are your thoughts since you own a pair?
Since you love your NS690 you'd probably appreciate the NS1000 just as much. Given you already have an excellent amp to drive them, IMO it's a no brainer. I'd go for it and price is reasonable too. Let us if end up getting them. Cheers VHFL
@@vintagehifilover Is there that much of a difference between the 690 vs the 1000? I thought about spending the $1500 on a different brand of speakers. Maybe some JBLs? I dont want 2 pairs of basically the speakers.
A lot of room gain from the outside pair which is to be expected. They all sound nice though.
Chất âm ns1000 vẫn rất tuyệt vời 🎉🎉🎉
👍🏼
Would a subwoofer added to the NS-690 be a good idea? They sound a little thin in the bottom end, causing the mids and highs to sound a bit 'squeezed' (according to my ear) compared to the 1000's.
Possibly, I've never had a subwoofer in my two channel setup though.
Pair NS690s with any Aragon or Sumo power amp and you will be amazed how low can they go.
Can you tell me where I can get stands for my NS1000 Yamaha speakers? Mine is on the carpet. They look so much better on the stands
I made mine with timber then painted them to suit.
Thanks. I have been reviewing the websites and found some DIY speaker stands that I can build. Your system looks awesome. I’m just starting to build my system. I have the Yamaha CA 1010 receiver and NS 1000 speakers both in good condition. I have an AkAI AP-B110 turntable but on the hunt for high end one preferably a Yamaha
I like the NS-1000. In the center. Awesome video bud! These are amazing speakers. Do you own all 3 sets?
Have in the past, but not anymore. Cheers VHFL
In terms of real-world enjoyability, are the 690's relatively close to the 1000s, or is it a quantum leap ?
If one only has a pair of 690, I reckon they could live happily with it.
I love yamaha NS 1000M speaker hope one day you can compare NS 5000 my dream speaker,
I would love to do that too... but I can't see myself getting close to a NS5000 any time soon 😂
I watched a video on rebuilding the crossovers in the 1000 and the audio from the original didn't look all that good on paper so to speak. Funny thing is that the crossovers are so large but the signal wasn't very tamed by it. They're also pretty old so maybethat was the problem..
They sound good to me.
Hi new friend. Beautiful set of speakers there. I need a pair of these badly.
I know right
@@vintagehifilover badly lol
the brown is well rounded. I love it better
👍🏼
I have question for you. I bought NS 690 mk III 1 week ago and I uave big lroblem with bass. I miss it. There is not enough bass. I have Pioneer A9 -1981 ump. Maybe I don t have good interconect cable. Can enybody tell me what to do? Eny advice? Is this normal for this speakers or not?
THX
@denny b Thank you so much.
One more ask.
At low tones, the bass is boomy and lasts a long time. It can be irritate. Is it because the speakers aren't bas reflex, or maybe it's the cables? My amp is Pioneer A9 -
1981. Thank you my friend
@@bonaccca People who like metal music dig to have smaller bass speakers but lots of them, they are faster. Larger ones are more for techno style music becourse they are slower and therefor tend to be more boomy.
This is about car stereo systems, i dont know about how this is for home stereo systems.
Perhaps you could use more dampening material inside than it is stock to fix the boominess to you preferance.
You could get a equalizer with lots of bands and adjust the sound, i remember a friend had a 2x 20 bands or something equalizer and when he did turn off everything exept the lowest one on the TOA 18" subwoofers it sounded like war kind of, not music anymore.
I tried to help, i might not have the right knowledge lol.
I thought they had a good coherent sound, perhaps a bit lean on the bass though
I also got a pair, nice speaker!
What kind of speaker stands are those? Where can I get them?
The ones in front are made of steel and similar to JBL stands. The timber ones at the back I made them myself. I'm sure a carpenter or steel fabricator could make some for you. Not sure where you'd be able to buy it of the shelf though.
@@vintagehifilover i have this 3 sets with marantz 2385 or yamaha mx1000u yamaha cx-1000u and yamaha tx1000u beautiful sound
@@mariobetancourt412, that would be a great collection to have, congrats!
@@vintagehifilover thank you i love the music
The funny thing about this is, you can mix it up with a different cd player, amplification and so on. When this is done, you may have a change of opinion. I like the M and the 690 has always been a very good one. I have a pair of NS-1200 and many Yamaha amps, integrated's, receivers and a few Yammy cd players. With that said, I can almost assure you mixing and matching a a-1020, CR-800, Rx-z9, and M-80 , will do this due to the different dampening, distortion and build of those units. Don't even throw a cx-1000 in the mix. I cant wait to retire to do what you've done with this video. I've collected so much since 2008 to the present. Thanks for sharing the vid.
Yamaha makes some very high quality HiFi gear, I used to have lots of great vintage Yamaha amps and receivers. I'm sure you'll have lots of fun mixing and matching your different Yamaha components one day. When you do get the chance please send me a link as I'd love to check it out. Cheers
@@vintagehifilover For sure!
I like the wood colored pair best.
They were very nice
Where they are -laced in the room will make as big of a difference or more than the speaker. If you pull the ones in the corner out of the corner will sound like a whole different speaker
Yes indeed, though they would not have fitted in the frame for the video. Thanks for stopping by :-)
The light brown ones are ns-690s?
Jason B , that's right NS-690 MKIII
These are only good if you like that boxy airy old sound. If you put them on some meters they have some big issues.
These are far from perferct, but one could do a lot worse still ;-)
The NS1000 (not the black Monitor) is the best and most beautiful. It has the makassar finish like the YPD-8/9/10, black Yamaha CT-7000, black TC-1000 and the CR-3020.
It's a lovely finish I agree, one of the reasons why I still have them {=^)
From the closer to you. The black next to you , 2nd, The brown 3d, the black away from you at the last, is the 1st.
Thanks 👍🏼
Which model are black no1? (That at the corner of room?)
The most airy and musical .
Personally I bleed Yamaha. Bought my first system in 1975. Using headphones listening to this, I personally think the 1000’s are just a bit louder or the 690’s just need a spec more volume when switching them on. Other wise the clarity seems to me, about the same. I got a Yamaha M-65 amp now and run two sets of NS-670’s and one pair of NS-690. Now comparing just my two the 670 have more base, and the 690 better mid, and a speck more highs.
Thanks 👍🏼
Nice review there. I have two pairs of NS1000Ms, one acquired brand new in the 80s and the other one I just picked up from Japan few months back. The one from Japan is in pristine condition and sparingly used so its pretty close to new. I am driving them with a Yamaha P2200 and a M50 amplifier. I also had the chance to audition the Yamaha NS-5000 and truly its a tribute to the NS-1000 legacy and glad to say that Zylon matches beryllium in sound.
Nice to hear Roy, thanks for sharing your experience.
Ns1000 ns690 whats the one against the wall please?
NS-1000 Ebony version.
The speakers closest to the corner were the winner in this video. But I suspect if the others were placed in the corner the results would be different.
Hmm
Great sound over my phone....🤧
The finger🤣
If.. we can hear any change.
Oke I'll buy the most left.😂
I have a paid of the ns1000m speakers but I'm not getting any sound.. Do I need an amp for them to produce sound or what might the problem be? Sorry for the noob question but any help would be appreciated. Thank you!
yes to needing an amp, maybe get it checked by a tech
NS 1000 is master :-)
Thanks for stopping by :-)
Don't be too biased. It's for a people who never tried this speakers in a real life. Sadly you do that... The first pair sound is excellent in any case. And obviously, it all depended from conditions and recording state. Best Regards, PureSound-UK.
690 лучшее соотношение цены и звука, мой выбор 690. 1000 серия для аудиофилов, 690 для меломанов
That's a good way to describe them. Thanks
Can anybody recommend me amp for my NS690 MK III.
I have pioneer A9, and it sound very high. Crispy. Piano, and vocals are too high and noisy. Please help!
Look for some vintage Sansui amps, an AU-717 should work quite nicely.
Another option would be to look for a valve amplifier.
@@vintagehifilover Thanks a lot. And what do you think about CA 810 ? Is that better optuon than pioneer A9. Or amp like you have in this video?
Not familiar with that Pioneer, the Yamaha probably won't have a warm sound as the Sansui.
@@vintagehifilover Thank you! I hope I ll find good sansui amp as you recomend me. Thank you!
NS 690 FOR EVER
Rock on 🤟🏼
In terms of Yamaha its the 2000s I think ate the ones but then again Im a Pioneer fan.
But you are correct. Love the 2000's forever.
I've not heard the 2000's
690 - фаворит на вокале/1000 - студийный звук/1000М - чуть худший студийный звук.

NS-1000 , затем NS-690, а монитор не для дома...
Semper risus in hendrerit
Las Yamaha NS 690 son las mejores. Mucho más claras.
Maybe they have the extra clarity, but they are lacking in body compared to the 1000s.
Esas son las ns-690lll
Yep you got it
those speakers are vintage??
yes all of them, 30+ years old
How would the 344 stack up?
#3. Large close speakers.
👍🏼
bad test, position in the room makes a world of difference. the ones against the wall will always sound better
Yes you are right the position is not ideal but this was the first video that I've seen having all 3 speakers playing together from one source.
I wouldn't say against the wall necessarily sounds better, but you're right - this is not a fair fight. Still good to see this video, however.
Anyone who is serious about sound would not even consider a speaker with this type of design. This is a speaker used to understand why you need an upgrade... They SUK!!!
They sound their best with valve amps in my experience.
So expensive vibe! 😏
😎
NS-690
👍🏼
I think the 690's were more Natural
they were quite nice
NS-690 less echoey
Thanks for stopping by :-)
jeez give them loudspeakers some space and air to breath
Not ideal but that's what I had to work with at the time.
The NS-690's sound a bit boxy by comparison to the other 2.
