  • Learn whether Monarda bradburiana (Bradbury’s Monarda, Bradbury’s Beebalm, or Eastern Beebalm) makes a good cut flower to display in a vase in your home. Watch a non-rigorous, non-peer-reviewed scientific study into the vase life of Monarda bradburiana. Also learn a little about Monarda bradburiana and a little about whether using native flowers and plants in cut flower displays is a good idea or not.

I’m all for takin a few cuttings inside to spruce up house. Most times a little pruning produces more flowers too. I think I need to go back and buy Bradbury’s Beebalm, I was debating the other day but you sold me by this fun little experiment 😊

Oh you've made me laugh! That's wonderful about getting more. I'm glad to hear too that you enjoyed my little experiment. :-)

Thank you for making this video. I've never cut flowers from our 10'x4' section of overgrown bee balm (not aure which variety tbh.) Glad to know it will last a while in a vase. It makes me wonder, how long would it have lasted if you picked a bud that was halfway through the blooming process?

Well now that's a good question! Sounds like a new experiment is needed this year ☺ How long do they last and look good when you get a bud VS a half-bud-half-bloom VS full blooming?
Question about your overgrown, unidentified bee balm -- what color is the flower? How tall do they get? I use iNaturalist quite often when I'm trying to figure out what something is -- you can get the app on your phone or you can go to their website on a computer. You upload photo(s) and they come back with the most likely options.

Does monarda die all the way down to the root system I got a young plant and planted it late summer and it seemed to be alive until winter and it completely disappeared, I was just wondering if that was normal or not.

Oh such a good question! I have a video coming out soon looking at Monarda bradburiana in each season -- What happens in Fall/Winter is that it does indeed die back to the ground. In some vaguely warmer climates, those leaves might stay dark red/purple/green for longer; however, in colder climates, they do die back to the ground. Next Spring, look for it to come back up!
