So I don't think I ever found fault with Marisha for role play but I was being petty about her combat decision with a monk. However that waa stupid and I do love Bo as a character.
Marisha mentioned in one episode of Talks that playing Kayleth led her to understand and live the perspective of someone she doesn't agree with. She mentioned she doesn't really like the personality of Kayleth, but playing Kayleth gave her the space to empathize with the character and hence play her much deeply. Beau is basically a lesbian-disaster Marisha who loves to parkour around the room and is a total badass of a character.
She also admits in one con that Keyleth was Marisha attempting to min-max a character and make it theoretically the most powerful. To that, she did VERY well, but personality-wise, it’s like Keyleth was miscast. Beau is very much Marisha having 100% fun with a character, and describes Beau as her id. It fits her so well. She was a bit grating at the beginning of the campaign, but I think that was by design because she grows so endearing as time goes on.
Wages of Sinn backstory isn’t roleplay. Getting to the table and playing your character is roleplay. You seem like you just violently dislike cr because you’re sick of hearing about it so you’re always going to take the contrarian standpoint
Wages of Sinn will it? Seems like a pretty large generalization. A character who is seemingly a cliche can make decisions you wouldn’t necessarily expect (not that that is the defining factor on a good roleplayer anyways). I’ve seen players who sit down with nothing more than the base backstory and an alignment and they get into character and build it based on their whim and it makes for an incredible character
@@mnm1273 Sorry, I thought my sarcasm there was pretty obvious. Can't blame you though. I'm sure you can find more than a few Critters with some kind of elaborate headcannon they came up with that "explains" why this was genius level RP and not Marisha completely failing to take the game world seriously.
With the unique resurrection rules, she could have very easily perma-died. Also, revivify should not work on a splatted corpse cause yknow, it's basically exploded
The only thing that could have been done differently: She could have turned into a bird and dive-bombed, which would have had the same effect Turned into an earth elemental or some other damage sponge, then have a good chance of surviving. I haven't watched the full scene, but as far as I know she misunderstood and thought the water was right under her, not rocks. As it is, she has a legacy now, and that embarrassing moment for the others to bring up and laugh about. None of them are holding grudges, so why is everybody else?
Fritz Darchinger So you pictured a pool of fish blood turning into a pool of Keyleth blood? That makes almost less sense than a splattered fish turning into a wrecked Keyleth. I’ve always pictured it like so; Druid is a bear, bear sustains hefty damage from attack & Druid can’t hold the form - form slips & the slash that killed the bear is simply physical trauma on the Druid. Bruises, internal bleeding, etc. as they’ve protected themselves with this magical form that is essentially an extension of their life essence. So in the Keyleth situation, as soon as that fish hit & sustained such major trauma the magic can’t hold the form & it drops, revealing a battered & bruised Keyleth who drops dead from internal bleeding immediately.
When ever I watch Crit role, I love those moments when Marisha really gets into character. Those nights when she is really feeling it. You can see it. She is no longer marisha on those nights she is her character. There were a few moment a in campaign one, that I noticed, she actually changes her posture, even the way she sits. Keyleth sat with her shoulders rolled forward, trying to look small sometimes, like someone that is unsure of themselves. Beu on the other hand sits on her feet in the chair, like a spring ready to release. When Marisha is at the table and the game starts, she is not Marisha Ray, she is her character.
I think one of the greatest things about Marisha as a player is how involved she is. She's the one taking more notes, she's the one who remembers the details, the npcs and the banter best, she's the one who connects the dots quicker. But also she is the one that brings emotion to the table. I mean, look at the way she reacts everytime something big happens. Shes jumps on her chair, stands up, gets off the table, she laughs she cries, she attentively watches a scene thats shes not participating in occur, as she watches Matt describe the environment. I mean, i love WATCHING her play.
I totally agree that Marisha is a really great RPer. This video came out a few years ago, but now, she REALLY shines with Laudna in C3. She has made ANOTHER character that is the opposite of her other two, and it is even better.
I love Laudna, but I think Beau is still my favorite. A DMs dream. A face of the party who has canonical reasons to be taking extensive notes and doing a load of research
Marisha did with Keyleth what Jack Gleeson did with Joffrey Baratheon: played the character so well that the actor got bile and shit thrown their way for what happened in fiction. You said it here, it's admirable. And while I can't say Kiki was the _perfect_ mirror for our own awkward selves, it takes guts of iron to stick to the role despite the internet's combined -reee- hatred in her daily feed.
Just gonna paste the same response I gave to the last guy who tried this line. Joffery was meant to be a dislikable asshole and the actor behind it delivered that perfectly. Keyleth's character was delivered poorly and thus became unlikable. That's the difference. If Marisha was doing it right the critter community would unite under the same banner like GoT fans united against Joffery. Instead the character Keyleth is still causing the biggest divide ever in this community.
Jason Swagborn Okay, I'm no critic, so how was the character delivered poorly? I'd always thought it was an admirable depiction of an intentionally awkward character.
i dont see how trying to cheat ur way out of rules is admirable. And Jack got shit for playing a detestable character so well, If Keyleth is meant to be a detestable character, then i take back my sarcasm, but im sure no one and their dog thinks Marisha is TRYING to play a detestable character. Ppl like Keyleth, but they DONT LIKE Marisha because of the "out-of'character" moments like not reading the spells uve chosen to take that day (not the whole list just wat u chose), etc. All of the Elve characters (Liam, Marisha, Laura) are always trying to "win" and will tabletop game which is frowned upon as cheating. The other 3 dont do that...
Shout out to Marisha, the most bashed out of all on Critical Role. It's ridiculous, but she keeps on bringing us great content! We love you Marisha, and everyone else in Critical Role!!!
She bugs me sometimes when listening to the audio whenever she gets excited into the microphone, but when I watch the videos and see how much fun she's having, then I just get jealous :P. She's great.
@@tornbubble I'd say it's a toss up. And many people roast Keyleith for being just like Tyberius, yet remaining ON the show. However, while I'm only on episode 45, I've yet to see Keyleith cast a spell on someone JUST to shut them up. And I didn't even know sorcerers HAD silence on their spell list.
Liaminator Sadly it is controversial, a lot of people give her shit and are so passionate on hating on Marisha and her characters to the point that I wouldn’t be surprised if they went off the series. In campaign 2 I already saw people still bringing up not even big deal shit from Campaign 1.
@@disappointment7463 not a lot of people... a few people give her a lot of shit... the same small group of noisy idiots you even find in this comment section, same names, same arguments lol
@@dubbingsync True, but she somehow thought that leaping off a 1000 foot drop was somehow not going to hurt. Don't get me wrong, I love Marisha and how she RPs, but there are often times she just does something she thinks will be cool or stylish without thinking about the finer details. Sometimes it goes well, sometimes it doesn't, and here it absolutely didn't.
@@Dan-qy6zv They were in the mid-to-high teens, so yes, she absolutely was high enough level to turn into a bird. That's exactly why it was funny, and why my point is that Marisha doesn't always think through what she plans. And I'm glad for it, because we wouldn't get scenes of pure gold like the High-Dive if she did.
I'm just waiting for the Sam video, literally one of the most intelligent D&D players out there, not just with the MVP clutches in the finale, but in almost important battle Sam has intelligent plays and understands his actions
@@loganfields159 that’s just wrong. Sam remembers certain rules before even Matt. Sure with Nott he got confused on sneak attack sometimes, but he’ll remember a guiding bolt from two turns ago giving him advantage when no one else does. Or remember mythcarver giving disadvantage on the enemies concentration save
@JoJo is not an anime Well she won't read this comment section but there are other places she gets abuse from. Also, compare it to the hate the rest of the cast get. It can only be rivaled by Matt and maybe Ashley. I know people will always disagree with things but some of them don't have real reasons. If you don't like her, it's fine but some people are really vile about it.
@@ronanhiggz9364 Criticism is not abuse. Yes some people have issues that goes beyond that, but people (in general) needs to realize that criticism can be a positive thing. In the original series I thought her character (not her personally, I don't know her!) was the worst... and while she has a different role in the new series, it's not like her playing really changed much. She seems sweet and kind as a person, and that's great. But as a DM and a long time player, I think she is sub-par with the rest of the team.
If Marisha is the masterclass on roleplaying, then Liam would ve the masterclass on acting. Mariana does what her character would do. Liam is able to portray extreme emotions with his characters
Yeah. Liam’s acting is incredibly good, and everything, down to his word choice, is always amazing. It would be hard for a casual D&D player to get to that level of acting, but I think there’s tips and tricks you could pick up from watching him.
@@dungeonmasterblaster5600 Except they're all having fun, and its not like Matt or the others are above calling out shit when it *actually* gets out of hand. From what I remember, all but Ashley and maybe Sam have done it at one point or another
I really wish people would cut Marisha some slack, man. During campaign 1 she would make me cringe every now and then, but she was learning to play D&D using arguably THE most complicated class. Moon Druids have wildshape PLUS full PREPARATION spellcasting. Compared to everyone else's character mechanics the second most complex might have been Scanlan or Pike, a whole world less bookkeeping. Marisha's notes were always best. From an acting standpoint, she did at times seem the most uncomfortable, but considering that she's not even 30, and sharing the stage with people that have been professional voice actors for way longer? Like I said, I wish the critter community would cut her just a tad more slack.
I think her being the youngest has a lot to do with it. Also, Matt (who I assume she's most comfortable around) has to DM, and can't interact like another player could to help out. I think Laura senses this and goes out of her way to encourage Marisha too. The awkwardness she sometimes brings, while obviously uncomfortable, is actually pretty refreshingly real I think. Her weakness is the game mechanics, but that comes with time and is the easiest to teach.
Marisha has been playing TTRPGs since 2008. She’s suppose to be one of the most experienced out of the group in playing DnD. Not that you can ever tell in the first campaign.
@@TheKnight212 1. There’s a huge difference between playing to play and playing to stream, and like OP said, she may have been experienced with the game, but she was the LEAST experienced with acting and putting herself out there for the public eye. I can’t imagine the extra stress it can add to the game, having to be constantly performing on top of everything else. 2. They made these characters not knowing that they were going to be performing them. Not every d&d character is well suited to performance, and I think this may have been a struggle with Keylith being that she has said she made the character intentionally shy since (when their game started) she didn’t know the others. This character made with the express purpose of reflecting her less comfortable relationship (at the start) with the other players now has to be translated to a show meant to entertain millions? I could definitely see where that got difficult to translate. And 3. Experience with the game is not experience with the class. In my most recent game I was a ranger, and I made a hell of a lot mistakes- as someone who has only played sell casters before- despite it being my 8th campaign. Luckily I had amazing DM to help me out and extend some patience!!! :) But even in my most comfortable classes I stick slack on my knowledge of mechanics, because that’s not what I’m good at! I love the story telling, I suck at rules- everyone has their strengths and weaknesses (and some of the people I’ve played with, who have known the rules the best, have been the most difficult to play beside). Over all, I think empathy is a better reaction than the judgment you so kindly offered 🙃. I find Marisha to be an INCREDIBLY relatable player, amongst the ranks of CR, because where the others are seasoned actors learning to play the game, she is in many ways the opposite. Many equate her “cluelessness” to lack of knowledge without taking into account how comfortable she may be in front of their digital crowd vs the others. And we see in C2 and C3 how AMAZING her character design and acting can be when she is able to actually design her character around the knowledge that she will be performing, and not just playing.
@@eckat5 lol sorry all I’m reading here is Marisha asskissing that doesn’t help anyone. Sucking up to her isn’t helping. I don’t need to emphasise with someone getting paid a bucketload of money to play a game and her constantly still drop the ball. Because guess what genius, THIS IS HER JOB so don’t you dare try and defend her piss weak playing when she is literally earning money doing this and she still couldn’t find the time or effort to ever learn how to play the game properly when she’s the most experienced player and also your acting line is bullshit because the continual complaint about Marisha is she is acting to much in the game and trying to MC that shit. Fucking fanboys
Thank you for making this video. I recently started reading the comments on the episodes on UA-cam and I was surprised to see the flack Marisha gets from people because Beau is one of my favourite characters in the party and she plays her well and consistently. What you said about Marisha trying to encourage others and making space for them to play their character is something I hadn't realized until your video but it's very apparent to me now. On an interview with Google she talked about the aftermath of [redacted] 's death and how she told Ashly Burch off-screen that Beau would want to go pretty hard on her character and Marisha wanted to make sure she was cool with that. Beau's anger made room for Ashly to play out Keg's guilt over the situation while driving the scene forward emotionally. If I ever had someone like Marisha as a player sitting at the same table I'd be quite happy.
"I just like it casually!" says the man with three videos talking about how amazing the people are and in this very video talks about how miffed he was at himself for not realizing she was behind him at blizcon. (Yes, I know you were playing it up, I'm jabbing with you back.)
Whenever I watch Critical Role, even though it's my favourite show, I always treat it as their personal weekly D&D game first and a livestreamed show second. If a character's an asshole in a game I'm playing in or DMing and I or someone else at the table is getting uncomfortable, it's worth discussing. But if a character in a game I'm watching is an asshole and the rest of their table is cool with it? Then I as the spectator am cool with it.
Do you mean character or player? My table's having a lot of fun having the characters in the party fight over petty grudges while having to pull together to get through the dungeon grind.
This was so fanboy wholesome. I loved every second. I just started playing DnD literally less than a week ago. My first session ever. It was B A D. I was so flip flopping awkward. Even one of the other characters interrupted me and told me to shut up because I was "rambling." Kind of hurt my feelings, tbh. Lol. But they are playing a very brash bard, so, maybe it was just their character. Anyways, thanks for the video. I'm doing research to be better for next time.
If a character is rude, but the player is polite and respectful, you know it's just the character. But if the player is rude and ALSO talks over you, then discuss it with the table! Good players should listen and make sure you're having fun!
@@davii2663 I am! I've gotten much much much MUCH better lol I've done about 4 campaigns so far. Favorite has to be the horror campaign I'm still currently running :)
Beau is actually one of my favorite characters in the group! It’s the flaws of a character that makes them interesting and if you don’t like a part of a character because of their flaws then they’re good flaws and they’re working! It’s a good flaw and can give your character room to grow and develop. They’re called flaws for a reason
But Beau doesn't develop throughout C2. She's the same one-dimensional, narcissistic, stubborn person from start to finish. Honesty, she's the worst part of Mighty Nein. Fact!
@@soullessmasquerader8420 , don't read any more replies, just wait so you can fully enjoy this one when it comes. Seriously though, as someone who carried a lot of residual Keyleth hate into CR2, Traci was my turning point to really admitting to myself that Marisha is a pretty fantastic and integral part of this group.
Dude, Marisha’s the shit. She managed to take the Monk, a class that’s always had pretty limited roleplay potential in my eyes, and turned it into Beauregard, easily one of my favorite characters that I’ve ever encountered in D&D. If that’s not the mark of a real pro, I don’t know what is.
@Nika Salia monks are an exceptionally varied class, in combat. Outside of combat they have very very few roleplaying hooks or utility. Part of the reason why she can do such interesting roleplay is that the Cobalt Soul path was made to give the Monk out of combat abilities. They can get bonuses to investigation, make a one-person zone of truth, etc.
The One and Only Michael McCormick She did have help from her husband as the Cobalt Soul is pretty good out of combat, and offers alot of roleplay potential to be fair. Edit: a typo.
Marisha is severely under appreciated. She’s such a talented player, and I fell in love with her style the moment I first watched. She gets so into it, and tbh I really attribute her influence to my own playing style that I’ve gained.
When you said what she does encourages others, I felt that. I'm very new and a little shy at RPing like my friends but seeing people really going at it motivates me to try it out more
Watching Marisha play Keyleth inspired me to play my own Druid in a game for a hot second. Marisha is an absolute gem. I look up to her and what she’s capable of channeling with her characters and role play. Watching her get absolutely shredded by certain members of the community has been really disheartening at times.
Yeah. As a character I’ve always disliked Keyleth, but I think Beau as a character and Mariah’s are great! It’s just the internet and gatekeepers doing what they do best.
Too bad druids suck to play unless you're lucky, don't care about contributing to the party, ignore how the class is supposed to be play or have already played one sev'ral timez. Still a great class tho
@@Stupisms I don't find it a good class at all... its way too limited and stereotypical to roleplay, but too versatile as a class to be unique... its literally why none of our players in many years of playing have ever played a druid...
Honestly at a certain point, if the dislike for a character has turned into you shredding cast members like that, you're not a member of the community anymore in my eyes. Only Gatekeeping I approve of.
*looks at Illiadan Stormrage and War* *looks to Liam O’Brian with Vax and Caleb* Brooding? Who on the earth would say Liam o’brain is Brooding? Psh, he doesn’t play BROODING characters!
As someone who LARPs emotional characters, getting into the mindset is a huge part of it. You have to get into the mindset that you are not you. You are your character and everything people are saying are directed at you, not the character, while still understanding that it's not personall oog. My character has had a melt down multiple times, once to even get into character due to something that tore me violently out of game (sort to speak). It's a lot of knowing how to control your own emotions and knowing how to express them. I'm not a really emotional person out of game. My character is a cry baby however.
For me it's a combo of physical and emotional triggers. I think about how my character thinks in that moment and I try to trigger and stifle a yawn. Yawning makes my eyes water naturally and the outcome is pretty convincing tears.
I think Liam is especially good at role play now that he is Caleb. He’s made a really deep, complex and interesting backstory and portrays that character really well
I don't get it when people hate on Keyleth for her bad decisions. Bad decisions are just as important as good ones in D&D, and at least Keyleth learns from her mistakes, and is one of my favourite characters to boot. Her rivalry with Raishan was some of the best stuff in the show imo (Thanks for the like, Jacob! you and the rest of the guys rock!) (Also, I didn't expect to start this kind of comment chain on a video...)
@@alexanderbering7845 The worst decision in my eyes was that she insisted on conjuring up a skywrite message while there were dragons over the invisible city theyre in. That makes absolutely no sense and it took a lot for the others to talk her out of that idea. Her reasoning was "to warn the citizens", but if the citizens can see the sky, they can also see the dragons. So all that would have done was tell the dragons that they were there. Note: I love Beau and Marisha, but absolutely despise Keyleth.
@@2MeterLP I don't quite remember how they got the word around but usually when a dragon appears in the vicinity, peoples' natural inclination is to panic. Panic would have created noise which would have alerted Vorugal. If there was a message in the sky, telling everyone to stay calm and be quiet, it would help. Yes, it is possible that Vorugal would've seen it, but he's also not very smart so he might not have seen or put 2 and 2 together. I don't exactly remember how that whole ordeal played out, but I understand the thinking behind her want to do that. And she didn't even do it, so why are they mad at something she didn't even do?
Tolryn the Mage she kept going on and on about the dragons being their fault when the party had been told over and over that this was a threat years and years in the coming and had nothing to do with them. Every time She starts claiming responsibility for the dragons I want to scream
Thanks for FINALLY getting to the video clip of Marisha falling out of her chair after teasing it over and over. The first time I listened to that episode, it was just the audio podcast. When I went back to rewatch some bits, I stumbled upon that absolute gem. Completely genuine moment. And Taleisin's reaction is equally classic.
I've seen a lot of emphasis of "necessary meta gaming" on this channel. This is the first video I've seen that's saying exclusively to dedicate to a roll, which is something I advocate for. "This is what my character would do" is a valid response to a character doing something weird or against the party (unless it was discussed before game that there would be no pvp or sabotage).
hey guys, just want to thank you for your videos and show some love and appreciation. you actually are responsible for getting me into dnd, and encouraging me to finally spend time with critical role. after a bunch of personal ups and downs these two places have been a really nice place to come to and that means a lot. so thanks x
She's gotten better. Marisha, like a lot of us, has had to learn to play the game. Now in her second *known* character I'm seeing a lot more development, you know, besides punches as a monk. I've gotten annoyed at all the CR players at times, her the most but I've learned to look past it, after all, arguments and bad decisions happen all the time. Matt keeps balance at the table end of the day. I hope to see more interesting characters after Keyleth and Beau
Cosmicgoatee I think Marisha’s characters are great. Once she stopped playing Beau with Keilith’s influence, Beau blossomed! Beau is the reason I chose Monk for my Tabaxi. 😻
you do realise that marisha has had more expirience at d&d then most of the critrole cast. At the beginning she was literally there just so she could help out laura, sam and travis who where completly new. and her "bad" decisions don't come from her being a bad player but from her being a great roleplayer
MorallyQuestionable i thought that was tal. AFAIK tal was the only experienced player. They literally talked about his character existing just to make sure nobody died and to keep the narrative going in seasons 1.
5:19 Funny thing: that describes Beau pretty well too actually. It's mostly just hidden under a more gruff exterior. BTW: She's also like one of the managers of Critical Role right now on top of her involvement in the game itself and without her the whole show would probably fall apart on a logistical level within hours.
@@zennamok5428 eh, gotta disagree. She does a lot of the planning, logistics, and scheduling that keeps Crit Role running and the money coming in for them to keep going. I'm not a huge fan of her. I think that her best RPing is done when she's RPing with herself as the model of her character. This is why I happen to think that Beau is better than Keyleth, though still not a big fan of Beau. If you get the chance, watch the one shot about the Darrington Brigade. I actually enjoyed her RP in that one.
@@digitalplayground8202 I seen your other comments you've made. I really respect your opinion on this and will def watch it. Even if its for the sole purpose of seeing the difference. (:
@@zennamok5428 I just think it shows that Marisha is capable of playing a character that I'd like to see in the campaign. It was funny, I'd known of Crit Role before the Covid, just never got into the campaign. The DM of my campaign had been talking about it and I decided to check it out. One of his comments was how a character called Keyleth got a lotta hate online. It wasn't until I got to episode 12 and 13 of the 2nd campaign that I ever delved into the comments. Those episodes had Beau and Fjord threatening Caleb for taking a spellcase because of the threat of discovery, even though the others had left behind a mass amount of other evidence that the home had been broken into. The first time I ever commented was during on episode 21 of the 2nd campaign. This was because I was pissed at Marisha's actions in snatching the magical nuke from Caleb in order to give it to the random person(who was a guest on the show) they'd just met the day before. The next time my DM mentioned Crit Role, I was at episode 22. I said, "Marisha played Keyleth in the first campaign, yeah?" "That's right," he told me. "I understand why she got a lot of hate online," I replied. I just figure that some people see her actions in a different light. Or possibly they see a lot of themselves in her. I'm not planning on watching the first campaign because I've heard Marisha was worse in that one. Still, beside a few instances such as the episode 10 fiasco I've enjoyed the second campaign. Watching the Darrington Brigade convinced me that Marisha is capable of better characters. Just as long as the characters are pretty close to her temperament. While I understand that these campaigns started from a group of friends playing D&D, like you I don't think that exempts them from criticism. I'm probably more willing to give Marisha a pass simply because I've had players that were a bit problematic but we all still wanted to play with them. Edited because I mixed up which episodes things happened in.
I like your priorities. Becoming the character is really awesome, not in order to perform or serve a story but just to live the life of the character.. and that LEADS to it serving story.
The fact that, in the very first stream of _Critical Role,_ back on the _Geek&Sundry_ channel, during the introductions, Marisha introduced herself _entirely_ as her _character_ and didn't mention her real name until reminded of it by the next introduction in line, was a pretty early indication of how much she gets into character. 😁
@@gtkall She's a real worker, yeah. At least it seems like it, and what she touches becomes gold in my opinion. Outside of roleplaying as well. Well not gold, not to lick sugar out of her asscrack, but she is capable I find.
Grater Good My comment wasn’t super nice, but it was about the drop in editing quality rather than anything about Marisha (who is one of the most badass people I know). :P
I agree so much with you. When players are actually feeling what your character feels, everyone gets so much more involved. Acting it out in front of everyone makes them waaaaay more involved than a shy roleplay between giggles. My best dnd moments were when I've been fully in character, that's why I respect Marisha so much for doing this.
I agree with you that Marisha is a great player who does a lot to help others. I learned a lot from this video on how I can roleplay in a way to encourage others in my groups. That said, I do want to mention that she does force herself into other people's roleplay situations though, at least in campaign 1. I remember times I got most frustrated were when Vax would tried to prank Scanlan with the love potion and Keyleth said "you have a guilty look on your face; you did something, didn't you?" without even rolling an Insight check. Multiple times in Campaign 1 Matt or the others had to remind her she can't just know everything for no reason. I think Marisha's a lot better than most people give her credit for, but I think that doesn't mean she's flawless.
You should do one on Liam and Laura and the importance for bonds between characters. Vax and Vex were such an amazing duo :3 They even both carried it over a bit i C2 - both Jester and Caleb has a person that they know and trust more than the rest of the group, at least in the beginning.
Most of this is spot on. I will say, i think with the sad stuff she lays it on a little thick sometimes for me taste. But as you say in your footnote there, every group will be a little different. Doesn't change the fact that she does really get into the role of her character which we should all strive to do.
I'm not gonna lie. I didn't like Keyleth, like, at all. (Okay that's not completely true, she had her moments). I just didn't connect with the character and I didn't find her motivations as interesting as the others. But I never held it against Marisha. I think the level of hate she got was unreal. It was supremely unfair. I like Beau a lot more. I think this for a few reasons. First, she just reminds me of an actual friend of mine (minus the punching). Also, Marisha knows a whole lot more about D&D now. Also, Also monk is a way less complicated class to play than druid. I know this was kind of an off-hand joke in the druid video, but I really do think not geling with your class and having to hyper-focus on what your class does can really drain from the quality of your RPing. (For me it's rogues. I can't rp a rogue to save my life.) Tl;dr Beau is a pretty great character, and while Keykey was probably the weakest character, roleplay-wise, Marisha did not deserve the treatment she got. We all have classes we're better with than others. I rock cleric, but rogues make my head hurt, for example.
Marisha is one of my fav people in CR and Keyleth was my fav character from C1! I'm so happy this video exists because it pretty much spells out my exact feelings about her and her characters!
Fucking BLESS, I’m so happy you made this video because you’re pinpointing how she does such a good job. And I need that personally at the table. AND MARISHA GETS THE LOVE SHE DESERVES 👏
I’ve genuinely never ever understood why Marisha’s gotten any hate. Do people really think she’s annoying and/or over the top?? I honestly don’t see it at all!
It’s because people hate it when a character in any work of fiction doesn’t make the obvious, logical choice. Because every knows that real life humans only ever make logical decisions.
Personally my only problem with marisha is her tendency to not read spells before she uses them but that usually only happens once per spell so it's not a thing I care about often other than that she's awsome
I think people get annoyed with her characters at times for being inconsistent or irrational, and extend that to marisha herself when I think it’s probably more intentional than they realize. I remember in C1 times when Keyleth would get all holier than thou with her morality and it felt hypocritical because she’s murdered a lot, including innocents. But that’s the character, and she went on an arc. Sometimes people are hypocritical. But I think people get annoyed because she’s flawed and extend her character’s flaws to her as a person, which is unfair and antithetical to the essence of roleplaying.
Marisha is the absolute best I see her playing and I see my own awkwardness, I appreciate all the effort and excitement she brings, I appreciate when she cries or laughs so hard she snorts, I appreciate her relationship to the other players and the way they all mesh together with their characters
I've given hey a lot of shit for her RP skills in the past, but she's honestly pretty legit and I really like how sticks with her decisions and really RPs, dosent meta game and really just accepts what comes, super invested in the story, I love it she's grown on me
This video perfectly sums up my feelings towards Mariah's. It was cringe when I first watched a grew to enjoy it, the campaign 2 started.... Major respect and absolutely love it. I finally saw it and I still feel guilty for not seeing it before. She's definitely a amazing role player.
Thanks for this video. I honestly have never understood any of the hate that Marisha gets. She played Keyleth very well, and continues to do so with Beau. If you don’t like her characters, that’s fine, but don’t attack her personally.
I feel like a lot of people look at some of the mistakes she has made on camera and see a little too much of a person who elected to ruin the game for them. Most players and GMs have run into someone that uses the "I'm playing my character"as a free pass to be an asshole. Marisha's actions sometimes push close to that boundary.
@@SpasticEliteStudios I would agree and honestly I didn't want to bring this up, but if that's what people hate so much, why are there still people saying Tiberius was so great? (And yes there're people like that even after everything Orion pulled on and off the show.) I mean Keyleth wasn't my favorite c1 character either, that place is firmly reserved for Percy, but it really does seem like the people that shit on Keyleth mostly do so because she keeps the party from going murder hobo and presents the others with moral dilemmas (I'm here fresh from rewatching the Whitestone arc over the holidays so that's new on my mind) even if the resulting discussion goes nowhere because those people think that isn't as fun as an actually engaging story or character development.
Jennifer Rogers, I don’t ever really remember Keyleth/Marisha doing anything to be an asshole in C1. I mean yeah, Keyleth sometimes preached of her moral superiority, or made some irrational decisions, but I think that’s part of who Keyleth is as a person. Furthermore, some of Keyleths famous speeches such as “Only big men talk big words that only fail on the battlefield” showcase Keyleth’s awkward transition into leadership. Otherwise, I think Keyleth’s goofs make for some of the funniest moments of the campaign. After all, “we’re basically gods”
I've seen people bitch about things she does that other members are allowed to do with out batting an eye. Like just this campaign people were bitching that Beau has slept with multiple people even though last campaign Scanlan tried to sleep with pretty much anything that moves and Grog hit up the brothel pretty much every other town and in this campaign Molly flat out had an orgy but yet Beau is the one that they call out for it.
Thank you for making this. There were times where I hated the decisions of Keyleth, but I always liked her as an example of getting into character. I wish I could be half as good as a role player as Marisha.
Hey, have not even finished watching this video yet, but I just have to say this for anyone who sees this and struggles as much as I did with feeling weird while roleplaying at the table. It's ok. You are not weird. You feel the character, you feel the moment, something actors, directors, and artists in general are TRAINED to do. And if your DnD table makes you feel weird about it - it's ok, it's not your fault, you just haven't found your crowd yet. These people could be wonderful (if they're horrible wtf are you still doing at that table?!) but if they don't approach the game the same way you do it doesn't mean you have to make yourself smaller for them. This is you, do not diminish your voice. I did, and it took me years to get it back out again. Only a few months back I was able to meet an amazing group that made me feel welcomed at my full, I no longer needed to shy away from these moments, because from my first big emotional choice - they all got excited and matched my energy - which made our game a million times more amazing. Don't make yourself small, keep going on your path, and this is how you will find *your* people. DnD is an adventure. Forge your own path and don't doubt it
This reminds me of my favorte dnd session ever. My friends and I were tracking a Necromancer through the woods, when we finally found him we agreed on an ambush. What we did not agree on was who to kill. You see: I was playing a zealot rogue that was pretty much indorctinated by a hardcore anti crime religious order to kill all criminals that associated themselves with evil and had absolutely NO CHILL when it came to killing these people (he was LN bordering on LE). On the opposite end of the table was one of the most seasoned RPers in the group, and my best friend. He was playing almost the exact opposite: a cleric that believed everyone could be saved and that life should be cherished at all costs even his own. Just the previous session he had stayed my blade and I had warned him that, if he did so again, I would kill him. And yet despite my warnings he did so again sparing the life of nearly all the mercinaries he had hired after he even healed the last one, I was so invested thanks to his strict rp that I made good on my promise. I ran him through with my poisoned blade critically striking him pinning him aainst a nearby treestump, he promptly raised his hands to indicate he meant no harm. The DM was just sitting there jaw on the floor. And my two companions were trying to talk me out of finishing him off. I ended up pulling my sword out of him, we technically leveled up after the encounter so before even 1 deathsave was made he was back on his feet and my rogue was forever changed by the ordeal. We still fondly recall the session when a single encounter almost resulted in a TPK by friendly fire.
I think it’s so unfair that so many people have Marisha that much crap for having a quirky character! I just started campaign 1 a few months ago and Kiki is one of my favourites!(I love all of them tho)
I don't get fan boners for hypocrites due to fame or gender. I'm 20 episodes into campaign 2 and it's summed up as: interruptions, hypocrisy, selfishness, meta gaming, cheating, and ice that cake with some serious cobalt soul plot armour where enemies will literally run past her and not attack just so she can use sentinal and then Mercer will lay 30 damage on someone else. For the argument that she's RP'ing, RP is a choice (scripted acting is not) frankly she's just rude and I don't like that, has very little to do with the quality of her RP (it's believeable), but it's also overshadowing everyone else to the point of overcompensating (I have a problem with authority so I have to automatically scream about having things my way every time someone attempts to take charge in a situation and then hypocritically gold to the wisdom of the cobalt soul because Matt made me a plot armour class and we need to see that story line through zzzzzz
It's a year later, but I hope we get more of the series. I see Sam as a great example of how to add humor to a campaign without hogging the stage and how you can take the opposite approach to Taliesin in character-building but still create a character that is lovable and real. Also, Laura is so talented at supporting other characters and their stories. She does really well in the spotlight, but there's nobody better to play a scene out with (I think you can especially see this with Vex).
I took the advice to heart last session. They got some serious character motivation due to things from my backstory I revealed while crying and pretending to have a mental breakdown. Thanks Jacob!
Being in a new group of noobs (including the DM) and me being a veteran I've been having fun Roleplaying and going above and beyond to encourage them all to roleplay along
I am a newbie who joined at around ep 10 of s 2 and really didn't understand all the Marisha hate. I had played a total of 2 trpgs neither of which were very roleplaying centric and neither of which were D&D. But I legitimately loved how much she roleplayed. This is probably because I started at s2 and watched s1 later. The two characters balance each other out. Being a voice actor and having played this game for years made her a brilliant roleplayer and the fact she is basically a shipping bicycle atm is probably not a coincidence.
To be honest, I'm 50 episodes into the first season and I can't recall moments where she's "shouting over others." There's definitely a lot of moments where there's three pairs trying to roleplay at once and all of the mics are feeding at the same volume, and it just ends up drowning out Matt, but that's down to a technical issue and not them shouting at each other.
Mad. Respect. Being able to admit your own faults. Being able to go against the majority of those who criticized (harshly) Marisha for being in character in the campaigns even though you feel you might lose out on followers/subs simply because you went against popular opinion…truly admirable. Thank you 💕
Coming from someone who only recently became a Critter through Campaign 2 after trying to start Campaign 1 a few years ago and dropping off after the first episode: Beau was instantly, and remains, my least favorite member of the Mighty Nein by a wide margin, but I almost as quickly became and to this day remain thoroughly impressed with Marisha as a player. And it still bagfles me when people can't tell the difference.
As a long time bartender with a decent ability to see the stages of alcohol affecting someone she's at her worst when she's drinking, which is most of the time, and only gets worse as an episode goes on.
I really love your points here and as someone who started with campaign 2 and also disliking Beau (but actually liking her a lot now) your points have made me appreciate Marisha more. However to a point I disagree with the conclusions you came to and the recommendation you made based off Marisha's wonderful play. One of my biggest peeves at the table is when the character is too much of a asshole and someone claims "I'm just fully embodying my character" or, in my mind, "it's just what my character would do!" This is not acceptable when you cross a certain line and the player often (in my experience) is completely unwilling to change the behavior of the character they are completely in control of. To keep it short, yes, absolutely getting into character is great and awesome, but ALWAYS consider the experience of the other players at the table. If anyone wants to take the advice from this video please do not cherry pick and try to do everything Marisha does that makes her a great role player.
Eh, I feel like this isn't really an issue. I know the type of player you're talking about, but if that's what was happening, Matt or someone else would mention it and they'd sort it out. If they're comfortable with a PC being a jerk, then that's what works for them.
The key is to pretend to be confident even when you’re not. You can get away with almost anything if you do it confidently. I always like to give the example of most crimes being committed just by being confident in what they’re doing and people don’t question it, but it really applies to anything. People like others who are confident (or look confident) in what they’re doing. If you pretend to be confident, the success that you get from that builds up confidence until you do feel comfortable with it. You just have to get out of your comfort zone a little bit.
“With a burning fire ashari passion” This shit triggered me way more than it should have, wether it was intentional or just a mistake made by a casual viewer it got me good. For those who don’t know, she’s an air ashari.
I really like your work on this channel but no matter how much I try to get into Critical Role I always come away from it going meh. I'd love to hear your thoughts on on The Unexpectables or TFS at the Table if you've seen them.
I know this is over two years old, so I'm not sure if it'll be seen by Jacob, but as someone who is new to DM'ing, I'd love to see a video in this series that talks about Orion Acaba's time on Critical Role, and address how DMs should tackle difficult/problematic players with good characters. Hell, you can have that as the video title for free: "How to Deal With Difficult/Problematic Players with Great Characters."
I'm sure all of us would love to see you make an episode like this for each member of critical role! and how they're all different and so good for different reasons; it would be like so cool to see. I learned a lot from this video keep up the good work!!!
I've met people who literally started playing D&D just to hone their acting skills, it's not at all cringy to role play in a role playing game and if by some misfortune it actually ends up being cringy then the cringe will either go away in a couple of sessions because that player's acting has improved or because you got used to it. People get accustomed with each other's quirks really fast.
MAN I wish I could like this video 1000 times. People have given Marisha SO MUCH shit for her character and how shs plays dnd. However, Marisha is SO good at what she does and she puts her whole body and mind into it. She makes choices that are so true to her character and that's why people don't liks it. It's really stupid how people don't like that. People think she's trying to shit on the other player's ideas, when really she's jyst being true to her character.
So being a perpetual twat who can't shut the fuck up for five minutes equates to characters of grand scale? People like her should learn to stow their tray in and stop acting up every five minutes and give people time to react. Nobody wants someone else's character in every potential point of their story.
Her characters are always morally bankrupt hypocrites with the most cliché backstories and insufferable personalities. She insists on inserting herself into every character dynamic that gets established among the other players. She's creatively bankrupt, and usually describes her unarmed attacks by saying "pop pop", rarely if ever describing any interesting fight choreography, she uses words like "dope" and "douchebag" in character. She doesn't take her own position seriously one episode, then brags about it the next, and suffers no consequences for her lack of regard to the importance of her order or her place in it. I guess Thoreau pays an extra 500gp every time snubs the High Curator for style points.
Yes thank you! She’s easily one of my favourites at the Crit. Role table, and I feel like she needs more respect for being so pivotal to her role in the emotional dynamic of the party.
There have been many a recent time in my latest campaign where I have cried as my character and been emotional at the table. And let me tell you, it's a god damn experience. To the point the DM even joins in. That it invokes such a natural response and me remembering small details at the death of my character's life-mate and everything, it just made the table go wild with emotion and was not the first time and won't be the last. It feels good to invoke joy, sadness and to whisk away your worries for three or four hours and immerse yourself into, for me; Regina To-Osen the Half-Orc Grave Cleric.

Hi can you give me the link to your profile
Again, I'm in the other d&d amino.
Seriously the amount of people that raged at her during campaign 1 was just weird to me.
Kinda sad if she wasn't able to understand perspectives of other views and opinions before that. she isn't a child.
@@johnx4952 It's not that she couldn't, it's that viewing it from that perspective helps. Acting is an incredible tool to develop empathy in people.

Wages of Sinn Why? They’re all great roleplayers who have fun and are excellent examples of how to play the game from an rp perspective.

Sorry, I thought my sarcasm there was pretty obvious.
Can't blame you though. I'm sure you can find more than a few Critters with some kind of elaborate headcannon they came up with that "explains" why this was genius level RP and not Marisha completely failing to take the game world seriously.

Same Fam
How to make a good backstory with Sam Riegal
My favorite part about Marisha is how insanely animated she gets, often accidently punching Tal or Liam when she is excitedly reacting to things
Keyleth worse call was to turn into a gold fish while taking a 1000 feet fall after screaming we are basically gods... that's the most D&D you can get
What are you talking about? That was one of the best moments of D&D fuckery that had absolutely no consequences besides a revivify
@@thelorewriter9460 exactly
With the unique resurrection rules, she could have very easily perma-died.
Also, revivify should not work on a splatted corpse cause yknow, it's basically exploded
The only thing that could have been done differently:
She could have turned into a bird and dive-bombed, which would have had the same effect
Turned into an earth elemental or some other damage sponge, then have a good chance of surviving.
I’ve always pictured it like so;
Druid is a bear, bear sustains hefty damage from attack & Druid can’t hold the form - form slips & the slash that killed the bear is simply physical trauma on the Druid.
I'm still waiting for one on Emmy-Award winning actor Sam Riegel.

Hell the fuck o. I want a scan man video
I forget he's an emmy winner, and then he punches you in the face with "What's my mother's name?!" and I'm reminded he's not just a comedian.
She's a DMs dream! :)
@@theswagonborn4164 Delivered poorlyt? It's her fucking character; it's not up to anybody else whether it was 'delivered poorly' or not.
i dont see how trying to cheat ur way out of rules is admirable.
I adpi r the actor that played joffrey for his portrayal. Marisha just likes attention but doesn't give it in return.

Marisha had played the most DnD out of all of them save for Matt

Don't be discouraged! DND has a learning curve, but keep having fun! And if you keep RPing, it will bring others up to your level.
If a character is rude, but the player is polite and respectful, you know it's just the character. But if the player is rude and ALSO talks over you, then discuss it with the table! Good players should listen and make sure you're having fun!

Fact!

Traci is Beau's "straight girl" performance
YASSS
Dude, Marisha’s the shit.
She managed to take the Monk, a class that’s always had pretty limited roleplay potential in my eyes, and turned it into Beauregard, easily one of my favorite characters that I’ve ever encountered in D&D.
If that’s not the mark of a real pro, I don’t know what is.
Nika Salia In my eyes, pal, I prefaced it for a reason.
The One and Only Michael McCormick She’s a talented actor yes, I will give her that.
Nothing shows off a real pro then playing a character I don't know how to.

@@Stupisms I don't find it a good class at all... its way too limited and stereotypical to roleplay, but too versatile as a class to be unique... its literally why none of our players in many years of playing have ever played a druid...

I think part of what makes Marisha a good role player is her acting talent. She can really immerse herself in a character
Roleplay and acting are two very different things in their own right. Guess which one let's you have a script :)
The Swagonborn roleplaying is still acting mate. That’s like saying people who improv a scene aren’t acting.
How the hell do you cry on command? Seriously, I don’t know.
not having dry eyes and repressed emotions probably helps..so guess i'm out.
A trick I use is unsteady breath
Repressed sadness does work, along with not blinking and thinking about sad memories
I think Liam is especially good at role play now that he is Caleb. He’s made a really deep, complex and interesting backstory and portrays that character really well

Why would you temp that?
I don't get it when people hate on Keyleth for her bad decisions. Bad decisions are just as important as good ones in D&D, and at least Keyleth learns from her mistakes, and is one of my favourite characters to boot. Her rivalry with Raishan was some of the best stuff in the show imo
(Thanks for the like, Jacob! you and the rest of the guys rock!)
(Also, I didn't expect to start this kind of comment chain on a video...)
I never understood the Keyleth hate either. What bad decisions did she even make?
@JoJo is not an anime I do disagree with that because for the most part it's just not freaking true.

And yeah while I missed the point, my opinion mates. Involvement is great. Don't be a moody roguelad
MrCrazyManiac hey I ain't judgin' Marisha has probably been at this a long while. Nobody's perfect at D&D.

Thinks about her actions... Marisha: Turns into goldfish and jumps off cliff

I said, "Marisha played Keyleth in the first campaign, yeah?"
"That's right," he told me.
"We're gods!" :)
She voices one of my favorite Fire Emblem characters. Need to build her in the mobile game.

I love Marisha. The pain comes from her constantly not remembering how her spells work
I agree so much with you.
Yuuuup that is annoying. She doesnt do this a lot in c1 but still happens on occasion. Her meta gaming is one of the worst in the show.
I'm just so happy for this Marisha appreciation post. She is very underrated and her investment is fenomenal. Thank you for this!
You should do one on Liam and Laura and the importance for bonds between characters. Vax and Vex were such an amazing duo :3 They even both carried it over a bit i C2 - both Jester and Caleb has a person that they know and trust more than the rest of the group, at least in the beginning.
"We are Gods." Dies 2 seconds later.
First 18 seconds had me like… whaaaat? Then I realized it was opposite day when this was produced.
Most of this is spot on. I will say, i think with the sad stuff she lays it on a little thick sometimes for me taste. But as you say in your footnote there, every group will be a little different. Doesn't change the fact that she does really get into the role of her character which we should all strive to do.
"Marisha thinks about her actions..."
Accidentally punches liam
Plot twist: the vast majority of us suffer from social anxiety.
I can't rp a rogue to save my life.)
Tl;dr Beau is a pretty great character, and while Keykey was probably the weakest character, roleplay-wise, Marisha did not deserve the treatment she got. We all have classes we're better with than others. I rock cleric, but rogues make my head hurt, for example.

Marisha is the absolute best
I see her playing and I see my own awkwardness, I appreciate all the effort and excitement she brings, I appreciate when she cries or laughs so hard she snorts, I appreciate her relationship to the other players and the way they all mesh together with their characters
This!
(And yes there're people like that even after everything Orion pulled on and off the show.)
I mean Keyleth wasn't my favorite c1 character either, that place is firmly reserved for Percy, but it really does seem like the people that shit on Keyleth mostly do so because she keeps the party from going murder hobo and presents the others with moral dilemmas (I'm here fresh from rewatching the Whitestone arc over the holidays so that's new on my mind) even if the resulting discussion goes nowhere because those people think that isn't as fun as an actually engaging story or character development.
For all the (unearned) crap Marisha gets from this fandom, her acting as Beau during Molly's funeral shows just how incredible of an actor she is.
Gave Marisha** not have lol
It's really not about being quirky but rather that Marisha can only seem to play one type of character.
Amy Willis She was incredibly obnoxious in S1. Stealing glory, shouting over people, forgetting what her spells do over and over and over again etc
It's what my character would do.
Mad. Respect.
Being able to admit your own faults.
Being able to go against the majority of those who criticized (harshly) Marisha for being in character in the campaigns even though you feel you might lose out on followers/subs simply because you went against popular opinion…truly admirable.
Thank you 💕
Coming from someone who only recently became a Critter through Campaign 2 after trying to start Campaign 1 a few years ago and dropping off after the first episode:
Beau was instantly, and remains, my least favorite member of the Mighty Nein by a wide margin, but I almost as quickly became and to this day remain thoroughly impressed with Marisha as a player. And it still bagfles me when people can't tell the difference.
I love marisha!!! She's definitely an inspiration for me, as a player AND as a GM (her running of honey heist is great), she brings a lot to the table
I hear a lot of criticism about Marisha's roleplay but I feel it's more her being an awkward person sometimes than her actually being a bad RPer.
I just think she lacked mechanics more than anything... and ya know reading her spells. Not my favorite character but you cant love everyone eh?
It’s about being a woman tho
I seriously love Marisha. I find her entertaining in how passionate she is.
You just have to get out of your comfort zone a little bit.
these skills are even more visible with Laudna, who is unlike either Beau or Keyleth
I think she has the 3 most dissimilar characters out of any of the cast. Well, tied with Travis.
im super duper new to critical role, didnt know it was a thing to hate marisha, i love her
“With a burning fire ashari passion” This shit triggered me way more than it should have, wether it was intentional or just a mistake made by a casual viewer it got me good. For those who don’t know, she’s an air ashari.
The oblivion soundtrack didnt passed out non noticed. Well done man. Love your channel.
holly crap this was 3 years ago, 2019 was 3 YEARS AGO
I really like your work on this channel but no matter how much I try to get into Critical Role I always come away from it going meh.
I'd love to hear your thoughts on on The Unexpectables or TFS at the Table if you've seen them.
I see you too are a man of culture
@@Boom-fs2ny I tip my hat to you fellow man of culture.
Monty is basically the best DM story-wise of all time, change my mind.
Superiordude I will not change your mind because you’re right
Marisha and Travis are premium example of players.
These videos break down the Mercer effect. Matt is only 1/8, maybe a little more, of CR. Without engaged players, DMing doesn't stand on its own.
