In today's Health Journey segment, we discussed how emotions, influenced by neurotransmitters and hormones, can impact our mental and physical well-being. Emotions like love, sadness, anger, and jealousy are regulated by different chemicals in the brain. For example, love and happiness are linked to dopamine and oxytocin, while sadness triggers decreased serotonin and increased cortisol. Anger releases adrenaline, and jealousy causes changes in serotonin and dopamine.
To regulate emotions effectively, both medical and religious/philosophical methods can be used. Medical approaches include deep breathing, meditation, exercise, and food intake (such as omega-3 fatty acids and magnesium). Psychological therapy and journaling are also helpful. Religious practices like Buddhist meditation, Christian prayer, and Confucian contemplation promote emotional control and inner peace. Practicing forgiveness, understanding, and gratitude can reduce negative emotions and cultivate positivity.
In conclusion, managing emotions well is crucial for maintaining a healthy life. Combining medical, psychological, and spiritual approaches can help achieve emotional balance and improve relationships.

Today, in our Health Journey segment, we will be discussing the changes in emotions and how to regulate them.
Human emotions are influenced by neurotransmitters and hormones in the brain, and they can be strengthened or regulated by external environments and personal experiences. Emotions like love, sadness, anger, and jealousy play important roles in our lives, and properly managing them greatly impacts both our mental and physical health. There are medical, religious, and philosophical approaches to regulating emotions, and when these are combined, more effective emotional control can be achieved.
So, how do emotions change? Our emotions are regulated by various neurotransmitters and hormones secreted by the brain. The physiological mechanisms for regulating emotions differ depending on whether we feel joy, love, sadness, anger, or jealousy.
When feeling love and happiness:
When we feel love, dopamine and oxytocin are secreted in large amounts. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter responsible for pleasure and reward, and it increases when we feel good or are with a loved one. Oxytocin is a hormone that plays an important role in building trust and attachment, helping to form deep relationships.
When feeling sadness and depression:
When feeling sad, serotonin and dopamine levels decrease, and cortisol, the stress hormone, increases. Prolonged sadness can develop into depression, and continuous stress can negatively affect brain function.
When feeling anger and rage:
When we feel angry, adrenaline and norepinephrine are secreted, preparing the body for immediate response. This results in increased heart rate, muscle tension, and heightened focus. However, if this emotion is not regulated, it can lead to elevated blood pressure, heart health deterioration, and other issues.
When feeling jealousy and anxiety:
Jealousy arises from comparison and low self-esteem and is associated with changes in neurotransmitters (serotonin, dopamine) that trigger anxiety. If anxiety worsens, stress hormones increase, and negative emotions can persist.
Next, how can we regulate our emotions effectively? There are two main approaches to emotional regulation: medical and religious/philosophical. By using both approaches appropriately, we can achieve better emotional control.
Medical approaches to emotional regulation:
Breathing and meditation training:
When emotions become intense, simply controlling your breath can prevent emotional outbursts. Deep abdominal breathing stabilizes the sympathetic nervous system and activates the parasympathetic nervous system, maintaining emotional balance. Meditation is also an effective way to regulate emotions by helping individuals objectively observe and accept their feelings.
Exercise and physical activity:
Regular exercise promotes the secretion of serotonin and endorphins, helping to stabilize mood. Aerobic exercises (jogging, walking, swimming, etc.) are particularly effective in positively changing emotions, and strength training is also beneficial for relieving stress. When you exercise, you may feel your negative emotions dissipate as you move your body.
Regulating emotions through food intake:
Certain foods help in regulating emotions.
Omega-3 fatty acids (found in salmon, nuts, and sesame oil) can reduce feelings of depression and improve mental health.
Magnesium-rich foods (bananas, chocolate, nuts) help stabilize the nerves and reduce stress.
Tryptophan (found in eggs, cheese, and chicken) aids in serotonin production and stabilizes emotions.
Psychological therapy and journaling:
Seeking psychological counseling or writing in a journal can also be helpful in regulating emotions. When emotions run high, instead of reacting immediately, writing them down can help you organize your thoughts and view them objectively.
Religious and philosophical approaches to emotional regulation:
Buddhist meditation:
Buddhism emphasizes observing emotions as they are, reducing attachment, and finding inner peace.
Christian prayer:
In Christianity, entrusting one's emotions to God and seeking peace of mind can be very helpful for emotional regulation.
Confucian contemplation (思索):
In Confucianism, it is important to control one’s emotions and practice virtues like benevolence (仁) and propriety (禮).
Forgiveness and understanding:
One of the most important aspects of regulating emotions is understanding and forgiving others. Anger and jealousy often arise from relationships, and to alleviate these feelings, practicing empathy by thinking from the other person's perspective is essential. In Buddhism, the law of karma teaches that all emotions and situations result from cause and effect. In Christianity, the teaching to "love your enemies" helps overcome anger and practice love.
Maintaining an attitude of gratitude:
An attitude of gratitude is highly effective in cultivating positive emotions. Developing a habit of writing down three things you're grateful for each day helps shift emotions toward positivity. Gratitude reduces jealousy and dissatisfaction and increases life satisfaction.
Conclusion:
Emotions are a crucial part of human life, and managing them well is essential for maintaining a healthy and happy life. By using medical methods such as breathing, exercise, and improving eating habits, we can regulate emotions physically. Psychological training helps us observe and analyze our emotions objectively. Religious and philosophical methods help transcend emotions, find inner peace, and live a more positive life. Emotions should not be eliminated, but rather managed effectively. By developing emotional regulation skills, we can improve our quality of life and have more positive relationships. If we consistently practice these various methods of emotional regulation, we can maintain a calm and peaceful life, regardless of emotional changes.
