  • Texas LEOs Josh and Bill show support for the elderly in this episode of The rookie! PART 1 OF 3
    Ask us questions on our livestreams every Tuesday and Thursday at 7:30pm CST right here on this channel.
    "Nine months after witnessing (and foiling) a bank robbery in his small town of Foxburg, Pennsylvania, John Nolan, a 45 year old divorcé packs up his entire life to move to Los Angeles and becomes a cop. His assignment to the force, particularly the Mid-Wiltshire Division of the LAPD is met with skepticism from his fellow officers, particularly his watch commander, Sergeant Wade Grey, and his training officer Talia Bishop. Nolan's first few days on the job are marked by a domestic dispute that quickly escalates out of hand (during which Nolan witnesses his first death), an unbalanced father who leaves his child in a locked car on a hot day, and an escaped felon who quickly tests Nolan in ways he never expected. Also joining Nolan as rookie officers are Jackson West, son of a high-ranking LAPD officer and eager to live up to the family legacy, and Lucy Chen, who became a cop against the wishes of her therapist parents and is carrying on a secret affair with Nolan despite the risk it poses to her career. Grey informs Nolan that he will do everything in his power to discourage him from continuing to serve, as he fears that Nolan's inexperience and age will endanger the lives of his officers. Nolan tells Grey that he believes being a cop might be his calling. Grey responds that if that is true, nothing Grey puts Nolan through will deter him."
    The Rookie is an American police procedural crime drama television series created for ABC by Alexi Hawley. The series follows John Nolan, a man in his forties, who becomes the oldest rookie at the Los Angeles Police Department. The series is based on real-life Los Angeles Police Department officer William Norcross, who moved to Los Angeles in 2015 and joined the department in his mid-40s.
    The series stars Nathan Fillion, Alyssa Diaz, Richard T. Jones, Titus Makin Jr., Mercedes Mason, Melissa O'Neil, Afton Williamson, Mekia Cox, Shawn Ashmore and Eric Winter.

    So if you look into the whole background for "The Rookie", it gets REALLY interesting.
    LAPD was one of the two following agencies across the States to employ anyone over the age of 35 and somehow somewhat, the executive producer of the show, Jon Steinburg, has a friend who went thru the same path of being one of the more elderly cop that went thru training and actually becoming a LAPD officer.
    Nathan Fillion, the main actor basically plays that friend abeit with a more dramatic path but that's what it was.

    • @OnlyCops
      @OnlyCops  8 місяців тому +6

      That is a really cool bit of trivia! There is definitely some realistic aspects of the show and I think it does a better job than most of getting things right.

    We had four "elderly" recruits in my basic training platoon: 2 women at the cut off age (34 and 35) and two guys (29 and 35) who had previous service (one former Air Force and one Coast Guard). I was 20 yrs old and, honestly, all four were in better shape than I was starting out. They got a lot of ribbing about their "advanced age", but the only issue the drill instructors seem to have with any of them was "re-training" habits/methods learned from previous service, especially Coast Guard guy. He was kind of full of himself the first few weeks, like "I already knew that". The former AF guy was the opposite, quiet and self-deprecating, and full of gentle wisdom (his nickname was literally "Old Man" but not in a bad way, more in a "wise guru" way).
    Both of the women did well enough but one of them (surname Fish-something) was so motherly by nature that her nickname was "Mama Trout" by the 3rd day of basic.

    • @OnlyCops
      @OnlyCops  9 місяців тому +3

      That was probably an awesome recruit class! Prior service can definitely be a good or a bad thing depending on the outlook towards training. Law enforcement is such a uniquely open ended job that there is no real substitute for experience and good mentoring.

    • @OnlyCops
      @OnlyCops  10 місяців тому +4

      This I can understand. I don't think law enforcement is for everyone, to actually do the job well you have to be truly selfless and it's often times not the case with people who end up taking the oath.
      We has the moto "Service before Self" in my old department, and it was rare that I saw it lived out.

    😂 five months. In the UK it takes two to three years of training to become a cop. For firearms alone it's 12 weeks training and that is only after the basic training.

      Yeah, most PDs in America the bar is WAY too low. Bill and I were lucky that our department required a 4 year degree before even applying, then a year and a half worth of training both in academy an field training 😁

    A sad thing a couple years ago during a mass shooting. A young African American found himself in a mass shooting at the mall. I’m not sure if he was a licensed carry or off duty, but he tried to help and was shot by the police. I mention that he’s African American because people don’t always think brothers will try to help, but we do. At the same time, when police roll up in an unknown mass shooting incident, they have no idea what’s going on. That’s why it’s sad because it’s a perfect storm of chaos. Also, maybe this is a good time to ask….. I know there’s the smart recommendation to shelter and be a good witness. But I also feel like sometimes, there’s the 1 out of 50 where you feel like you have to take a chance to immediately preserve life. What do you do? I’m guessing if you are legally carrying, do you even try? I dunno, I think every cop would say, shelter somewhere safe and be a good witness. Am I right or wrong?

    • @OnlyCops
      @OnlyCops  8 місяців тому +1

      Active shooter scenes are always awful and difficult to navigate for both LEO and the people at the location. That's tragic that the guy lost his life for just trying to step up and help and I hate that for everyone involved.
      My biggest suggestion for active shooter response for regular people carrying (and even for off duty LE) would be to act fast. There is a small window of opportunity between first shots and officers making scene (likely anywhere from 60 seconds to 4 minutes) its then and only then that I would act to stop the threat unless some other circumstances change the game.
      Running towards the sounds of the gun fire and staying concealed until you actually see the shooter and are capable of taking the shot would be my recommendation incase LEO response times are fast or they happened to already be on scene, and or another person doing the same thing is less likely to mistaken you as the shooter. Once you've taken care of business, holster up and let emergency response take over.
      As a bonus, you could have someone with you call in and give a description of you as someone trying to stop the shooter, I have already training my wife on how to do this so that dispatch can notify, that could be the difference between officers knowing you're a threat or not.

I applied out of college did the background paperwork and the 1st written test within in a few weeks(test date lined up nicely) got a call from LAPD's recruiting dept and asked if I wanted to do the expedited process. Started the application process mid August they called last week of August about doing it expedited so I would be in that Fall's Academy class.
      Not sure if they still do it since that was 10 years ago but iirc it was for out of state applications and if they were short on a particular class.
