- Driving from Meknes to Azrou travels through the major vine growing region of Morocco. This area is one of the largest wine producing regions in the country. The winery is located about 20 kilometers from Meknes, and the area of the ancient Roman ruins of Volubilis. They say it is the Mediterranean climate, dry summers, and the soil that makes for happy vines.
We visited the winery Domaine Volubilia -- Domaine de la ZouIna. This is an old winery created by the French in the early twentieth century. It stretches over 130 hectares, about 85 hectares of vines and 15 hectares of olive trees. The olive trees and cypress trees help to protect the vines and add flavor to the grapes.
Christopher Grebelin, the manager, and director of the estate, has a commitment to producing excellent wine. This commitment appears to carry over to all aspects of the Estate, such as the development of the organic gardens used by the Estate’s restaurant.
If you are a wine lover, we highly recommend you visit this winery. Having visited hundreds of wineries in the United States and Europe this is now one of our favorites. It is also a wonderful stop to take a break from a hectic travel schedule and enjoy the beautiful organic garden and grounds of the Estate. It is best to go online and make a reservation!
