How Does Coal Walking Work?

  • While some claim walking on hot coals is mind over matter, there's actually a science to not burning yourself, involving conductivity and insulation.

    Okay BrainStuff. It’s me, Jonathan. Let’s say you’re in northern Greece, or Bulgaria, or maybe Polynesia... and some villagers convince you that, “Y’know what? Walking barefoot through fire can’t be that bad… I’m willing to risk third degree burns to participate in their bonding ritual… thereby demonstrating the awesome power of my faith.”
    But is it really “mind over matter” like some people say? How do people walk on hot coals without burning their feet?
    Here’s the good news! There is a scientific answer. It involves heat conduction and insulation. For it to work, coal walkers light the fire well ahead of time and let it burn down to non-flaming coals.
    I repeat: they’re walking on coals. Not fire. The embers can still exceed 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit, but with the right preparation, those trained can cross without burning their flesh.
    See, the lightweight carbon structure of coal is actually a poor conductor of heat. This means it takes longer for the heat to transfer to human skin than a good conductor, like say... a burning metal pan. Water also has a high thermal capacity, which is why coal walkers let the wood burn down first, so the embers don’t retain water.
    It also helps coal walkers to pat down and spread the coals, so there’s a flat surface that prevents their feet from digging in and scooping up hotter embers.
    If they keep moving, each step should absorb relatively little heat. That’s why they’re “coal walkers” and not “coal standers,” otherwise their feet would sink and burn like bacon.
    Finally, you ever notice how most coal walking is done at night? That’s because coal walkers cover their path with a layer of ash. If the sun were up you’d see this.
    But at night, the glow is still visible through the layer. Ash is also poor at conducting heat. It blocks some of the warmth coming from the coals, transferring the heat even more slowly to your feet.
    Even with this information about conduction and insulation, coal walking can still be dangerous. Sometimes a hot coal might get stuck to a foot. Tripping and falling can even be fatal. And watch out for misinformation about the physical principles behind this stunt. There are some claims out there that are simply not true and I wouldn’t want any BrainStuff fans to get hurt.

      I think that their is a scientific explanation for mind over matter when it comes to fire. If you chopped your foot with an axe, no amount of positive thought would avoid injury, leaving me wonering why mind over matter seems to be confined to fire. Damp skin conducts heat quite quickly and the moisture transferes the heat like flux in a solder joint, but dry skin does not. Since fear causes you to sweat, removal of the fear will result in yous skin being dryer. I lived with open fires for many years and when the newspaper that I was using to draft them caught alight, I crushed it out with my bare hands, I also put my cigarettes out with my fingers and never seem to get blisters. A few months ago I was chatting to friends and the general conclusion was that after the years my hands had simply toughened up. When a couple of my friends decided to try putting a cigarette out, the ones who 'just did it' did not get any serious damage, while one girl who was sceptical hessitated for several minutes. By the time that she did it, adrenalin had made her hands clammy and she ended up with a blister. I think that the explanations to fire walking are a lot simpler than we realise.

    The scientific explanation makes sense - but as the primative part of the human brain, hard wired though thousands of years of evolution, does not understand the science, being faced with the prospect of walking barefoot on hot coals is very scary!!
    So it's about the psychological benefit of breaking through the fear and belief that it is not possible to do this without getting burned.
    I've done this twice myself it's an exhilerating and empowering experience.. Maybe not a case of mind over matter, but certainly mind over fear and limitations.
    It does have to be done with the right support from a trained team and supervision, to ensure people are ready and 'in state' before attempting this - definitely a case of 'don't try this at home'!

    If youre interested, look up "Beqa firewalking", "firewalker"s walk over hot stones, yes stone, so its a better conductor than coals. Its a practice unique to the people of Beqa in the Fiji Islands.

  • @uncipaws7643
    @uncipaws7643 9 років тому +3

    Thanks. So to safely "firewalk", have a good amount of charcoal no longer burning, just glowing, spread it evenly on a stone floor, cover it with a layer of ash and walk on it (and do it at night because only then you see the glow)?
    I'd love to do this for entertainment at a group event next summer if I find volunteers to participate. But I don't want to be responsible for injuries. I'm already more resistant to hot road surfaces than most others I know, so I'm confident I'd remain unhurt.

    When i was jung, i used to blacksmith barefooted.
    One day i felt a weird sensation in my foot.
    And sure enough when i watched later on,
    I had an triangular dentation of about 2 mm depth in my foot from a glowing coal.
    When you always walk barefoot, your feet will develope a thick and durable layer of skin underneath.

    The coals are at 400ºC-500ºC - if coal is such a poor conductor a) why is used for barbecues and b) how come other media are used i.e. lava, sheet metal or heated rocks? It's conducted when the sun goes down for effect - most people will not believe the incredible feet they have a achieved when they don't see the glowing coals. Length of the firewalk - as an instructor I did a 40ft firewalk which would rule out duration on the coals. Finally, people buring themselves on the second pass when the coals should be cooler but they will tell you that they did it 'because everyone else was doing it but I didn't really want to' which is the mindset end of things. Keep up the great work.

And I cut my foot open. I bleed for 2 hours straight. Before going to the hospital. Annnnndd got stitches which actually didn't hurt. I felt the pain but it's not bad. Like people let on.

    As an explanation for protection during coal-walking, it seems to have fallen out of fashion.

    • @RandomYoutuber1
      @RandomYoutuber1 9 років тому

      elmonte5lim The "leidenfrost effect" seems to better explain how you can put your hand into liquid nitrogen (for short periods) and not have your hand freeze solid, rather than explaining coal walking, because Jearl Walker used the condition of having 'wet feet' for coal walking. Notice that coal walking can be done _without_ wet feet, so other explanations are needed. Hence, the explanation using poor thermal conductivity.
      Additionally, consider the weight of the human body forcing the feet onto the hot coals is likely to overcome the small repelling force created by the leidenfrost effect. But, when you put your hand into liquid nitrogen, the force created by the bubbles and the leidenfrost effect is enough to push the liquid away from your skin.

    Yeah? Show me. Go ahead and give it a try. If it's science, if the coals are "poor conductors of heat" why do why do so many people get 3rd degree burns. And why don't you prove your theory by giving it a try?

    • @wildmanauh
      @wildmanauh 5 років тому

      Patrick Freeman because if u try to run you will put on more weight on your foot. Poor conductor doesnt mean zero conductor. Walk quickly but steadily and nothing will happen unless some of the burning coal gets stuck to your feet then it will hurt.

    Stop talking. Go and join them.See with your own eyes.That event was not held in the night.It is in the evening.How hot?At least 15 to 20 feet away from it.
    Have you seen putting nail,long pin ,sharp hook through the tongue,from left cheek to right cheek.
    Pulling the ox card without oxen.3 sharp hooks nipping the back of a woman .She pulled the card.slight bleeding from hooks attached skin area,
    Have you seen man climbing the machetes steps ladder with bare feet?
    There are many many things that our brains and science can not explain.

    • @IIIRobIII
      @IIIRobIII 5 років тому

      There is a difference between heat conduction and heat radiation.
      Or are you rubbing the burning coals against your steak when you're havin a BBQ?

      Tman Goodguy there are 8 different Intelligences. People who prefer visuals are not unintelligent. Your comment, not that was unintelligent. It's just like saying you yourself are unintelligent because you're watching a video about waking in coals instead of reading about it.

    i still consider it somewhat mind over matter. at least, that AND the science of it. when people give into their fears when approaching something scary, something counter intuitive....its natural for people to hesitate. as said in this video, that hesitation can mean injury caused from breaking a fast enough stride to prevent burning. in that case....your minds choice to just keep going depite the fear is ALSO what keeps you from getting burned, along with the science. just imo.
