Hiya. Those stones sticking out from the walls are called 'through stones'. Before cement, lime mortar was used which moves, allowing moisture in and out. Through stones create stability in the walls and help "lock" the building together. How could Ian NOT go for Wensleydale Cheese? Smh. Stay safe. All the best to you.

It really is dalelicious. A beautiful region. One must always stop for cheese.
    Sheep jokes redacted.
I haven't got any closer to a sheep than the dinner table in years but growing up my grandfather had a huge station, ranch, and I think he had something like 10,000 sheep. And hundreds if not thousands of cattle too. Plus wheat and sunflowers. The other grandparents had dairy cows. Dad had potatoes and dairy cattle too. Yep, kind of fun growing up in the bush. Not as green as Yorkshire, but their sheep a kind of scrawny. I was going to say we didn't have castles but decades after dad sold the farm some bloke did put a castle on it and turned it into a BNB. You will have seen Aysgarth Falls before if you have seen Robin Hood - Prince Of Thieves because it is the location used for the fight scene between Robin and Little John.
The bird with the bird with the yellow on the tail will have been a Grey Wagtail. Look out for the black and white version with no yellow on it - the Pied Wagtail. I have never seen or heard a Marsh Tit in that area, so you could have had a fairly rare sighting. Did you hear the Marsh Tit call? Was it like a squeaky "t-t-t-t-teee" sound or a "p-tew, p-tew, p-tew" sound? If not, it may have been a Willow Tit - I have definitely seen those in Upper Wharfedale and they have a distinctive, high-pitched "pew pew pew pew" song that is similar in timbre to a fork squeaking on a glazed plate.

@@johnclements6614 very true! It's especially bad when dogs or other animals are aggressive and upset the ewes, causing them to abort their lambs.
I think grandma made up a year round story for her own reasons 😉

One of my late relatives kept sheep. He told me that every sheep's sole purpose in life was to end it in the most improbable way. 🤣

Gary uses an app called iBird. He now has 336 birds on his life list!
He told me that in a text so that I could answer on his behalf since he's trying to keep a low profile and won't talk to people on UA-cam ! 🙄

@@MagentaOtterTravels lolz!! Tell him the pied wagtail is a really common bird in Britain....Often seen in carparks and school playgrounds...They "hunt" insects that sunbathe or get caught in the open on the concrete or tarmac!!
